This has been happening to me for some time, but I don't think it's the
scripts. I've never found a way of stopping it. I just type one word or else
delete the X if I need to put a space in.

Hi All.

I'm running the latest version of Winamp, and when I try to use the search
box in the Audio section of the library, an X is inserted after I hit the
spacebar if I'm entering an artist with two words in the name.Say, Chris
Knight, or Emerson Hart. It'll come out Emersonx Hart. This happens on both
my laptop on desktop. I'vee tried recompiling the scripts, and this has
done no good.

What do I need to do? Or arre there are newer scripts that have come out
since the release of JAWS 10?

I'm using the default scripts that came with JFW.

Thanks.

Wes

RE: Is it possible to edit video?

2009-02-23 Thread Blackwell, Clifford
You could try Video Redo suite from http://www.videoredo.com

It's not the most intuitive program , but by using the contex key
instead of the programs shorts cuts, I regularly edit ads out of tv
programs and record them to dvd.

Subject: Is it possible to edit video?

I've been recording a lot of audio described TV programmes as audio
files.
As I'm totally blind that's mostly what I'm interested in. I use Total
Recorder to edit out the adverts.

However, there's a couple of programmes that my sister, who is sighted,
is interested in. I think I can use Nero to burn my mpeg files to video
DVD. I got excited when I saw that there's a plugin for Total Recorder
that would let me edit video in exactly the same way it does audio. I
figure the rough edits I want to do can be done just by listening. But
it turns out the plugin only edits AVI and WMV files. Does anyone know
how to get round this or of a video editing programme that is accessible
enough for this purpose?

I tried muting Line IN in playback controls but it ended up not playing
the
sound through the recording. I can't find line-in in my recording

use
that because it doesn't pick up Window-Eyes.

I suspect you are using Windows xp or earlier. Go into the properties
of
your sound card and choose play. In that dialog, you may find options
to
check or uncheck what channels play. Make sure line in is unchecked.
Also,
in the recording properties, make sure line in is checked, not
anything

called What you Hear or Mixer.

I often digitize tapes using Goldwave, in both Xp and Vista, and never
hear
the tape playing, so the problem can be solved.

Re: Problem playing .cda format

2009-02-23 Thread Roger Stewart
The .cda file format is the correct type for making audio CDs for
playing back on any regular CD player. It just means CD Audio format.
A .WAV file won't play in an audio CD player. So just let Nero burn the
CD with the cda file format and you should have a playable audio CD.

Yes, but from those who have tried this unit, the concensus is just those
who are probably not using any screen reading or magnification technology so
to me its not valid points.

The NC10 does not have by any stretch of the imagination a 96% keyboard or
it would be the best seller.

Re: The New Netbooks

2009-02-23 Thread Constantine
I have an asus eee pc and like it more than the nc10. From what I've seen of
the nc10, that's just boasting. My 900 ha has maybe a 90 percent full
keyboard, probably less.

The soundcard on this thing rocks - for most things, anyway. It converts
files in gold wave with no lag at all. Its better than most laptops in that
it has xp. (keep in mind I'm keeping this as audio related as I can, sorry
if I stray off topic just a tad). I average 4.5 hours on battery with a 4
cell battery. None of the other netbooks can do that - because asus's super
hybrid engine.

Again, love it. Will never buy another brand of netbook again - or laptop,
for that matter.

Any of you using Skype 4.0 with JAWS 10 and do you need scripts for
it. I currently am using Skyp3 3.8 with no scripts and it works very
well. The new version has better sound quality and better vido
quality. Thanks.

It depends on the Netbook. For instance, I know that the Samsung uses a
Realtech HD Audio card, which is not bad, especially considering it has,
believe it or not, a stereo mic preamp.

Hi,

I'd like to be able to have headphones that are not directly connected to my
TripleTalk speech synthesizer, but I often need to handle protected material

Yes, but from those who have tried this unit, the concensus is just those
who are probably not using any screen reading or magnification technology so
to me its not valid points.

The NC10 does not have by any stretch of the imagination a 96% keyboard or
it would be the best seller.

Hi David,

Such a bluetooth device will work for the PC. However, if your PC is
not bluetooth-enabled (like mine) you will also have to purchase the
bluetooth transmitter. I got my headset, which is just a single
earpiece w/mic at Radio Shack on sale for about $20 and I got the
transmitter at Best Buy for I think $40. I had to have a little
sighted help setting up the software as the initial screen wasn't
accessible but it was ok after getting past that.

Re: The New Netbooks

2009-02-23 Thread David Tanner
Let me make a few comments here. I have used the MSI, HP MiniNote, the
Samsung NC10, and the Dell Mini 9. First let me say that I was totally
disappointed by the Dell Mini 9. The keyboard is too small, keys are
crammed together, and a number of important keys are missing or have been
moved. The keyboard has not functionkey roe, and only has the ability to
get functionkeys F1 thru F10. Finally, the Dell has the same processor as
the other units, but ran much slower and boots much slower.

The Samsung has a very nice keyboard, and is quite easy to type on at a
rather fast pace. The speaker sounds good considering the size of the unit,
and works well even with software such as Kurzweil1000 and Openbook with a
Canon Lide 200 flatbed scanner. About the only complaint I could find was
that the button to turn the unit on and off was on the side of the unit
where a person could easily accidently press the button and turn the unit on
or off without intending to do so. The most fantastic thing about the
Samsung is that with the great battery management software in the unit it
gets around 7 hours of use on a charge. That is a fantastic time for any
laptop, and I have heard of no other netbook that can even come close to
running as long on a charge.

The HP MiniNote I used was very nice, and had fantastic sound for its' size.
The HP MiniNotes have very nice keyboards and are easy to type on. But,
battery life per charge seemed to stay just over 4 hours per charge.

I baught a MSI Wind in December and absolutely love it. I think the only
minus is that the speakers are under the unit and do not sound as good as
some of the other units because of their placement under the unit. The
keyboard is very good, easy to type on, and has nice size keys. I am
getting just over 5 hours of use on a charge of the battery (6 cell). The
MSI has a new firmware bios that allows the unit to be run in turbo mode
that takes the speed of the processor to 2.0 GHZ instead of the 1.6
standard. But, because of the use of stepping you should not have to worry
about overheating the processor because the processor will only run at the
faster speed when processing demands call for the necessity of more speed
for heavy processing. This difference makes the MSI able to perform more
quickly and crispy on a lot of applications than the other units here that
do not have any turbo mode.

I have used Jaws 10, Window-Eyes 7, the latest NVDA, and the latest System
Access on these units and had no problems using any of these packages on any
of the units with the exception of keyboard issues on the Dell Mini 9.

Yes, but from those who have tried this unit, the concensus is just those
who are probably not using any screen reading or magnification technology
so

to me its not valid points.

The NC10 does not have by any stretch of the imagination a 96% keyboard or
it would be the best seller.

Hi

The asus eee pc line has some good netbooks too. In particular, the 900 ha,
with wireless on, skype and windows live open and doing things, and using
speedswitch xp and eee super hybrid engine, I get about 4.5 hours on a
charge. with skype shut down, wireless off, I average 5.5-6 hours. This is
with a 4 cell battery and it can varry greatly. The acer line of netbooks is
worse off in battery, the 3 cell getting at most 2 hours - and that's
pushing it.

The keyboard on this thing is pretty nice too - it takes some getting used
to but honestly, its worth it.

Finally, the Dell has the same processor
as the other units, but ran much slower and boots much slower.

The Samsung has a very nice keyboard, and is quite easy to type on at a
rather fast pace. The speaker sounds good considering the size of the
unit, and works well even with software such as Kurzweil1000 and Openbook
with a Canon Lide 200 flatbed scanner. About the only complaint I could
find was that the button to turn the unit on and off was on the side of
the unit where a person could easily accidently press the button and turn
the unit on or off without intending to do so. The most fantastic thing
about the Samsung is that with the great battery management software in
the unit it gets around 7 hours of use on a charge. That is a fantastic
time for any laptop, and I have heard of no other netbook that can even
come close to running as long on a charge.

The HP MiniNote I used was very nice, and had fantastic sound for its'
size. The HP MiniNotes have very nice keyboards and are easy to type on.
But, battery life per charge seemed to stay just over 4 hours per charge.

The
MSI has a new firmware bios that allows the unit to be run in turbo mode
that takes the speed of the processor to 2.0 GHZ instead of the 1.6
standard. But, because of the use of stepping you should not have to

Re: voice recorders that append

2009-02-23 Thread Jeff Samco

Hi, Steve,

I can only speak to the operation of the Sony ICD-B25 which is about
7 years old now. It is quite easy to use with the audio beeps
function turned on (which is by default). The clock and alarm
functions are totally inaccessible but all the basic and intermediate
functions are fine, such as:

record, stop, playback and skip forward and back;
splitting a recording, joining 2 recordings, erasing a recording;
moving from one folder to another, and so on.
But I cannot say what features remain accessible in currently-available models.
As for price, 7 years ago I paid about $75 but that's not going to
tell you what they cost today since recording capacities have
improved so dramatically and features added like stereo recording.

I'm a little late on this thread. I have an older Sony ICD-B25
voice recorder which does append. On the hunch that Sony still
makes recorders with this feature I checked out the first one I
found on Amazon:
Sony ICD-P520 Digital Voice Recorder with 256 MB Built-in Flash
Memory and USB

and found this in its feature list:
* Add Recording: Insert and add additional information to any
message without affecting the original.

Re: The New Netbooks

2009-02-23 Thread David Tanner

Hi Steve,

I have been using a NC10 from Samsung for about a week. Our Samsung has
given us a 30 day evaluation unit to use. Actually, it has a very nice
keyboard, and it is just a slight bit bigger than the MSI Wind keyboard. I
know several people who have baught or are going to be buying the Samsung,
and two things that those people usually emntion is the nice keyboard and
over 7 hours of use on a charge of the battery.

I really like my MSI Wind, and it has some great features, including a turbo
mode that takes the speed to 2.0 GHZ. But, the best I have been able to get
with the MSI on battery life is a little over 5 hours. That isn't bad, but
7 hours is fantastic.

I'd be interested to know how any of these netbooks work with Sound Forge or
Sonar. I wouldn't expect much but would be nice if one could do live
recording and some audio editing.

Maybe the Samsung with it's turbo mode could even handle some soft
synthesizer plugins.
