Using the Accessible iPod
By Anna Dresner
In braille, PortaBook, ASCII text/Word, and DAISY formats, $15
(Also downloadable in PortaBook, ASCII text/Word, and DAISY formats)

Cute, well-designed, and able to hold hundreds or thousands of songs,
iPods have taken the world by storm. And in the past few months, Apple
has added another feature to their popular Nano and Shuffle models --
the ability to speak. Once you take a few simple steps, every feature
on the iPod Shuffle and most features on the Nano are completely
accessible. iTunes now works better for blind people than ever before,
especially the iTunes store. If you're wondering how to take advantage
of this new accessibility, Using the Accessible iPod can help. It tells
you how to do everything you need to get up and running with one of the
new iPods, including:
* Getting started with iTunes
* Putting the music, playlists, audiobooks and podcasts you want on your
computer and into your iPod
* Getting your iPod to speak
* Using all accessible features of your iPod
A troubleshooting section, a list of helpful resources, and information
on how your iPod organizes music are also included; see the table of
contents for more information. Whether you've never owned an iPod
before or you'd like to be able to do more with the one you have, this
book will help. The included iPods are the fourth generation Nano and
the second and third generation Shuffles.

In addition to braille and electronic text, we are proud to offer Using
The Accessible iPod in DAISY format, both on CD and for download. (If
you choose to download the DAISY version, we recommend that you use a
broadband connection, as the file is over 60 MB in length.) Put it in
your Victor Reader Stream or other DAISY player, or if you use JAWS,
Freedom Scientific has generously arranged for it to work with the demo
version of FSReader, so you don't need any new software to listen on
your computer or read with a braille display. You can quickly navigate
by heading or page to find the section you want. In addition to
synthesized audio, the full text is included to make searching or
moving through URLs quick and easy. So pick up a copy in your favorite
format today.

Can it be done? How do I do it?

2009-06-03 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi Folks. I have a question that has been troubling me for some years but
never bothered to ask about it but now I think I would like to know if it
can be done and how to do it.

When you buy a commercial CD; say of a live performance, the disc has track
numbers or index points depending on your terminology. Although these track
points exist the performance is seamless, in other words if when playing the
entire disc, you have no idea you have moved from one track to another.

Now, here's my question. When burning a CD how can I get the same effect.
Out of interest, I am totally blind and use Nero Express 6.3 with Jaws 8
(hoping to upgrade to Jaws 10 in the next few months).

I use Gold wave as my editor and I have express burn, WMA and Nero as my
disc burners. I also have Reel player but have never used it to burn discs
as I don't know how to. As a general rule though I use Nero Express to burn
unless there is a reason I can't. I often use the no Pause Between Tracks
feature, especially with live recordings where there is no natural blank
portions but even with this and with the best will in the world, there is
still a slight jump when playing a disc with this feature when playing the
entire disc and it moves from one track to another. Does any of the
burners/editors I have mentioned allow me to accomplish my aim or do I need
to purchase another burner that will and if so, which burners will do this.
I hope someone can help and answer a question and a problem that has
bothered me for years. Walter.

Gapless Cd creation: Re: Can it be done? How do I do it?

2009-06-03 Thread Ray
Do hope you don't mind the modification to the subject line.

Yes, gapless Cd tracks have never been a problem for me in Nero where, as you
probably know, you select CD at once rather than track at once. This gives 0
seconds gap between tracks, except the first one which must have a two second
space I believe.

I think XPburn, a free piece of software, does this too with a specific option
of gapless track creation in it's wizzard.

I believe there are JFW scripts for this program and I've a feeling there's
also a BCT podcast about it, but wouldn't sware to that.

Ray.

Re: Gapless Cd creation: Re: Can it be done? How do I do it?

2009-06-03 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, if you're dealing with concerts on your hard drive, especially with
lossless cd trading, this is a problem that recievers of your discs will
thank you for correcting. Depending on how the resultant .wav files are cut,
the editing program may not respect the cd track boundaries, as far as how
they're made. This is what causes the barely-perceptible split-second gaps
between tracks. They're called sector boundary errors. They can be corrected
with a command line program called SHNTool, or with another program called
Trader's Little Helper. If you'll get a plug-in for your media player which
plays files gaplessly, like the gapless plug-in for Winamp, then you can
test whether the files actually are seamless when played back. However,
there still may be sector boundary errors in the .wav files, even if the
files play gaplessly in your media player. This is why you'll need to fix
them with the programs I listed above. If you're a Sound Forge user, then
you'll definitely need to fix these, since no current version of that
program cuts the files on their correct sector boundary. I've asked them to
fix this in future versions, so maybe they will. I hope this helps, and
sorry if it was a bit technical, but hopefully you can get what you desire.
If you've any more questions, just ask. Oh, and if you have files which
already have the gaps in them to begin with, then there are programs which
try to remove these, with varying degrees of success, like WavTrim.
Thanks a lot.
Matthew

feature, especially with live recordings where there is no natural blank
portions but even with this and with the best will in the world, there is
still a slight jump when playing a disc with this feature when playing
the

entire disc and it moves from one track to another. Does any of the
burners/editors I have mentioned allow me to accomplish my aim or do I
need
to purchase another burner that will and if so, which burners will do
this.
I hope someone can help and answer a question and a problem that has
bothered me for years. Walter.

I think I would remove the silence from both endes of the tracks with the
audo trim in Goldwave befor using the no pause in Nero. you can do this time
of recording in Roxio with the disc at once feature to.

I've always wondered about that. If I take two files that have audiol
in them from end to end and try to splice them together, there's
always a click, a blip, a something, where the two files are joined,
and I always thought that there was some garbage at the end of the
first or beginning of the second that you could never cut out
completely. Thanks for the explanation. Oh, PS, does Goldwave have
this problem, too?

Re: Gapless Cd creation: Re: Can it be done? How do I do it?

2009-06-03 Thread Matthew Bullis
OK, getting really fine and technical here. If you splice files together in
Sound Forge, and you hear a click, or you otherwise notice the point at
which you've joined the files, then there is something wrong with the .wav
files before you've even joined them. You'll need to use a program called
WavTrim to fix the two files before you join them. This way, it can look at
the ends of each file on either side, trim out any digital garbage, and
present you with cleaned-up files which you can then join. Sound Forge's
problem is that while splitting the files is fine, and the playback on
computer is seamless, when written to cd, the byte allocation data is off,
and only when you play back the audio cd will you then hear any clicks,
hesitations, or ticks, while the .wav files that still reside on your hard
drive play back flawlessly. It's worth it to learn this correctly, because
if you trade a concert to someone, and your cd to them has these mistracked
errors, and they don't fix them, and then they burn a copy for someone else,
more tracking errors occur. Their failure to check this problem results
possibly in double errors, and it can go downhill from there. The worst case
I've come across is where someone did heaven knows what while making the
cds, or five or six people ignored the problems, and actual seconds of audio
was lost, which of course couldn't be recovered. OK, I'll stop there, as it
might have got a bit nit-picky, but I appreciate the effort when someone
presents a well taken care of show, which flows seamlessly, like you're
right there in the concert.
Thanks a lot.
Matthew
