2010-03-24 Thread Trueblue Proud
hello, if you want an even better blind peoples network. Please go to the
accessable friends network on:

www.tafn.org.uk

I have been a member for 6 months, and it is the best blind chat network I
have come across up to now, and the people are wonderful, and very helpful.

There is also a Cummunicator, which has many rooms where you can chat, and
listen and play music, and much more.

Please go to the website above and have a good look,

Hi John,

The VIP Conduit voice chat community uses a voice chat program they've
developed themselves called the VIP Communicator. Because it has been
designed for blind people it is completely accessible. It works with
your sound card using speakers and a microphone or you can chat using a
USB headset/microphone. More details are at www.vipconduit.com. It
isn't really like Skype. I hope this helps.

Regards Steve.

read a drive with other file formats on it.
the comment above is incorrect. the flash drive I have currently has both
bard and mp3 books and it has no problems playing them. It does work better
once i created the audio+podcasts folder.

Subject: Ditgetel Talking Player Revisited

Hello List Members,
Below this message, is an email that was sent to me from someone at the
Bureau of Brail and Talking Book Library in Daytona Beach Florida.
Either she wasn't very clear with me on this, or she was just plane
incorrect about it.

What she said was, the NLS player won't play any other files.
Don't take my word for it, se for yourself and tell me if I'm correct about
this or not.
I emailed her back and told her that other blind people myself included,
have tested this player.

It can play MP3 and WAV files.
My best regards.
 John.
-

Flash drive information:

Blank NLS digital cartridge

· 1G; holds approximately 92 hours of NLS books

· Requires a cable to connect to your computer

· Advantages: Designed for NLS player; fits in cartridge slot; easier
to insert/remove from machine

· Sources TBA

Flash drive

· Also called jump drive, thumb drive

· Fits in USB port on the side of the NLS machine

· Some brands work better than others; look for those without built-in
U3 software. Brands we have found to work include:

o Dane Elec

o Verbatim

o Lexar

o Sony

o PNY

o Kingston

o Ativa 8 gig

· Look for 1G to 8G of memory; those with more memory may not work

· Advantage: Available locally at most discount, electronic, or
department stores; can be found for $10-$15; available in larger sizes that
hold more books

· The flash drive must contain only BARD books. The player will not
read a drive with other file formats on it.

Re: path copy help request

2010-03-24 Thread Robert doc Wright
I'm not familiar with this program but windows already has this feature. go
to control pannal, open folder options, control tab to view, tab twice to
list view then arrow down and check both add path to title bar and address
bar. when this is done click apply then ok. Now when you highlight the
folder you can tab to the address bar and copy the path.

Hi Alan,

Try to do a re-install of it. Sometimes that will fix any installation
problems.

I would imagine that if you speak with someone from a library, they're
naturally gonna tell you that you can't play anything on these players but
books; it's like (in the old days)..folks would sometimes say you weren't
supposed to play anything but talking book records on the old talking book
players! I've never really heard a definitive answer for that one; all I
know is: people used to do it all the time (played their records on the
talking book machines)..now it might be a thing where..the needles were
bigger..and the grooves in the old talking book records were bigger; I don't
know for sure..but oh yeah..playing record albums on talking book machines
was a practice that people did a lot! But I'm fairly certain that..if one
had talked with their librarian..I'm sure they would have said Oh no;
you're not supposed to play records on these machines!

In the case of the record players what they should have said is that the
talkingbook player's needle could harm the record because the tone arm is so

Re: Ditgetel Talking Player Revisited

2010-03-24 Thread Donald L. Roberts
My experience is that the player will play NLS books, unprotected mp3 files and
unprotected windows media files.

I was told, and it works for me, to create two folders in the root of the
cartridge or presumably a flash drive. One folder should be named $DTB,
without the quotes, and the other should be named audio+podcasts, without the
quotes. Note the plus sign in the audio+podcasts folder name. Put daisy books
in the $DTB folder and everything else in the audio+podcasts folder. It works,
I guarantee it!

the comment above is incorrect. the flash drive I have currently has both

once i created the audio+podcasts folder.

  John.

Flash drive information:

Blank NLS digital cartridge

· 1G; holds approximately 92 hours of NLS books

· Requires a cable to connect to your computer

· Advantages: Designed for NLS player; fits in cartridge slot; easier
to insert/remove from machine

· Sources TBA

Flash drive

· Also called jump drive, thumb drive

· Fits in USB port on the side of the NLS machine

· Some brands work better than others; look for those without built-in
U3 software. Brands we have found to work include:

o Dane Elec

o Verbatim

o Lexar

o Sony

o PNY

o Kingston

o Ativa 8 gig

· Look for 1G to 8G of memory; those with more memory may not work

· Advantage: Available locally at most discount, electronic, or
department stores; can be found for $10-$15; available in larger sizes that
hold more books

· The flash drive must contain only BARD books. The player will not
read a drive with other file formats on it.

Re: [Vip announce] Help us get the word out

2010-03-24 Thread Donald L. Roberts
VIP conduit is a wonderful voice chat site. I have only two gripes about it,
both relatively minor. First, the one room in which I wish to hang out,
specifically aging disgracefully, is the one and only room as far as I know in
which you may not participate unless you pay the $20 per year annual
subscription fee. Otherwise, you can participate as a guest, but not in this
one. If there are other such rooms, I am not aware of them.

Secondly, the moderators of VIP are positively paranoid about any discussion
which even hints of illegal copying, contraband, cracks, etc. They are great
people, but they do monitor the rooms, and they do not hesitate to let you know
that they do not like conversation heading in directions of which they
disapprove.

What MP3 player do you use Adrien? winamp, Windows Media Player,
FooBar2000 and itunes are all accessible and all allow you to organize
your music into libraries. this is based off of the tags in each file.
You can then search for music or list it according to artist, CD/album,
type of music and so on.

Re: Ditgetel Talking Player Revisited

2010-03-24 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Tom,
Lock me up and throw away the key!
When I was only 10 years of age, I received a talking book record player and
a C-77 talking book cassette player.

I was told that you couldn't play music tapes and records on those machines.
But I got away with doing that with both of them.
The only thing with the record player, you couldn't play 45 and or 78
records on them because there wasn't any speed positions for those 2 speeds.
But you were able to play 33 and a third record LP's without any problems at
all!

And I did, and enjoyed it too!
So again, lock me up and throw away the key!
My best regards.

Hi John.

I think I still have my old record player that was sent to me. I'm not sure
where it is right now. You're wrong about not being able to play 45 and 78
records on those players. All you'd do is put the player in neutral speed,
and spin the record around. It sounded weird, and my Dad yelled at me for
doing it, especially when I played the record backwards, but you could do
it. As a side note, thanks to that old record player, I figured out how the
Chipmunks were done.

Just my bit of humor for the day.

That's pretty good trial and error, David.

The reason I'm sticking with WMP 10 is I find it easier to navigate with

subjective opinion based on hearing 11 on a friend's computer then roling it

Thanks for your tips, David. I'll probably being using 12 when I get

Ah, since not everyone is including the thread that they're replying to,
it took me a while to figure out what spawned this thread.

I beg to differ with everyone's response to the original statement. From
what I've read, the NLS is pretty clear that it doesn't support anything
except NLS books. It also doesn't officially support using the USB port
to attach a flash drive. I would expect any official response from the
NLS to be it doesn't work, or if it does work then use it at your own
risk. that doesn't mean that it doesn't work or that people haven't had
success doing it, it just means that the NLS isn't going to document it
or support it.

Well, technically I think every time you played a record, no matter how
nice the turntable and cartridge was, you were damaging the record. I
also think your typical audiophile would cringe if they heard you were
playing a record with a talking books turntable, and I'm pretty certain
they'd say you were damaging the album. that doesn't mean your typical
user is going to notice any damage. those audiophiles are a special breed!

In the case of the record players what they should have said is that the
talkingbook player's needle could harm the record because the tone arm is
so heavy.

I would imagine that if you speak with someone from a library, they're
naturally gonna tell you that you can't play anything on these players but
books; it's like (in the old days)..folks would sometimes say you weren't
supposed to play anything but talking book records on the old talking book

Hello Tom,
Lock me up and throw away the key!
When I was only 10 years of age, I received a talking book record player
and a C-77 talking book cassette player.
I was told that you couldn't play music tapes and records on those
machines.

But I got away with doing that with both of them.
The only thing with the record player, you couldn't play 45 and or 78
records on them because there wasn't any speed positions for those 2
speeds.
But you were able to play 33 and a third record LP's without any problems
at all!

And I did, and enjoyed it too!
So again, lock me up and throw away the key!
My best regards.

Hello Tom,
I did do that.
Just a lady that calls herself my reader adviser told me via email, the
LNS player won't play any other files.

This is misinformation.
You and I and other blind people that have that machine, knows that this
isn't true.

I got it to play MP3 music files almost right out of the box.
The only type of file it won't play is, an uncompressed WAVE/PCM file.
It gives you white noise instead of music.
My best regards.

Re: Ditgetel Talking Player Revisited

2010-03-24 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Garry and all others,
In the early 1960's, they introduced transistor record players that had a
verriple speed control knob on them.
If you sat the mane speed lever to 33 and a third, all you had to do was
turn that knob up as high as it would go.

It would play 78 records at that setting.
Slow it down to 16, it would play 45 records.
As for that diamond head needle, there were a few commercial record players
that used them

Record players that went as far back as the mid 1930's up to 1989.
They are still sailing these old machines on eBay.
My best regards.
 John.
PS. They were used allot in public schools.
