Re: Where to place downloaded BARD books [was saving and playingaudiobooks from my NLS player]

2010-05-01 Thread Joanne
Christopher, forgive me if this has already been asked, but as opposed to a
thumb drive, can I use my external drive? Or must they first go onto a
flash or thumb drive? I may want to keep some books that I really like, and
wondered if external hard drive storage can be done. I'm still awaiting my
player, so am not sure of the order of how this works.

Thanks.

Yes, this is how I have my music organized on my booksense, my Rockbox
player and my PC. On my NLS cartridge, and on the USB memory stick I used
to use with my DTBM, I found I had to place my MP3's in the Audio+Podcasts
so I could move from MP3 file to file on the DTBM. Also, as I said in a
previous note, your BARD books can go in any directory, as long as you
have one book per directory. Looks like the advice I got on using the $DTB
folder came from a Victor Stream user. Here's what it says on the BARD
Talk FAQ at http://www.bardtalk.com/faq.php:

12. Can I move a thumb drive with NLS books between my third party reading
device and my DTB player and have it work with both?
Answer: Yes. The NLS dtbm will locate any NLS books on your thumb drive
regardless of the folder names in which they are placed. If your third
party reading
device requires the NLS books to be in a certain folder, you should place
them branching off that folder if you plan to listen to them using both
the dtbm
and your third party reader. For example, if your third party reader is a
Victor Reader Stream, you would place the NLS books in subfolders below
$VRDTB
on your thumb drive so you could listen to them on both the NLS dtbm and
your Stream. Remember that bookmarks including your current reading
position are
stored on the individual device and will not transfer when you switch the
media between reading devices.

13. Where do I put MP3 files I want to listen to on my DTB player?
Answer: Create a folder on your thumb drive or a writable cartridge
called: audio+podcasts. Note, when creating this folder, use the + sign
between audio
and podcasts. Additional folders may be created under that main folder.
Mp3 files will be played sequentially based on their file names. the NLS
dtbm will
not announce the names of the files because it does not have a built in
text to speech engine.

2010-05-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Yeh, you can store your books on an external harddrive, or any hard drive
for that matter, however to play the books on your player, you'll need to
have them on an NLS cartridge or a USB attachable drive. If your external
hard drive has a USB connection then you could plug that drive into the
player. Of course, attaching an external hard drive to the player will make
it less portable.

Note that the USB port on the player isn't officially supported by the NLS
for playing books or MP3's. This doesn't mean it doesn't work, it just means
that it isn't supported by the NLS. Also, not every thumb drive will work on
the NLS player, and that may be true for external hard drives as well.

Personally, I'd suggest getting a thumb drive or a blank NLS cartridge to
use with your player. If you don't have a thumb drive then I'd say just go
with a blank NLS cartridge. They're a little pricy for the storage you get,
but they are more convenient, and you'll know they'll work. This is the
route I went, and I've always been able to get a handful of books on the 2G
cartridge. You can copy books from your PC or your external hard drive to
the blank NLS cartridge or a thumb drive. I'd also suggest getting a cable
when you get the blank NLS cartridge. It's a standard USB extension cable,
but not every USB extension cable will work with the NLS cartridge since it
has to physically fit into the housing around the USB connector in the
cartridge.

Also, I'm not into storing my books on my PC or an external hard drive for
any length of time. I figure I can just download them again from the BARD
site if I ever want to listen to a book again.

The BARD Talk web site at http://www.bardtalk.com/ is a great resource. It
talks about which thumb drives will work with the NLS player, where to get
blank cartridges and cables, it has a getting started guide and more.

M AUDIO SOUND CARD QUESTION REPOST

I am buying them strictly for recording purposes.

But for the Windows machine, do I need Jaws scripts for the control panel to

Thinks in advance!

John,

I have two Windows XP computers using the Audiophile 24/96 card from
M-Audio. No, Jaws scripts are not needed to use them successfully and
fully accessibly. The manual is not well written and I needed to read
it five times or so very thoroughly before I fully understood what I
needed. I also had a sighted person describe the interface on three
different times before I got the hang of it. I say all of this
because I am used to reading manuals all the time and figuring
products out. I also am highly comfortable picking through legal
statutes and regulations and analyzing them. Somehow the Audiophile
24/96 documentation was different. The biggest concept I faced is
that recording uses one interface configuration and optimal playing of
sound uses another interface configuration. Additionally, the card is
adjusted on the fourth device slot rather than the first, which threw
me for a loop at first.

I have been extremely pleased with this card and find it delivers far
superior sound compared to one of the Creative cards, which I had with
my first couple of computers.

I have been extremely pleased with this card and find it delivers far
superior sound compared to one of the Creative cards, which I had with
my first couple of computers.

Hello all list members,
I am thinking about buying a couple of M-AUDIO audio phial-2496 sound
cards.

I am buying them strictly for recording purposes.
One of them is gonna be put in to my Windows machine, the other one is
gonna

be put in to my Mack system when I get it.
But for the Windows machine, do I need Jaws scripts for the control panel
to

make it more assessable for me?
And for the Mack machine, will Voiceover work with the control panel
right

out of the box?
Thinks in advance!
My best regards.

A lame encoder question re-posted

2010-05-01 Thread Johnny Angel!

Hi all,

I just downloaded the lame encoder to my desktop. I copied the file
into the following folder but MP3DirectCut says it does not find it:

C::\Program Files\MP3DirectCut\.
Please, someone nicely tell me what I am doing wrong, and then, tell
me how to install the Lame program into the appropriate MP3DC folder.

Thank you,

Johnny

Re: goldwave questions

2010-05-01 Thread Rob Tabor

Hello Tom and List.
I'm not aware of an automated recording scheduler in Goldwave unless there
is a plugin available. The Lame MP3 encoder's file name is

lame_enc.dll.
Hope that helps
best regards

Does Gold Wave have a scheduler? I use Total Recorder..and it does
fine; was just wondering about Gold Wave (if it has the capability to
schedule a recording when you're not there as Total Recorder will
do)..while I have it on my mind, I'm wondering how it is that I'm making
MP3 recordings with Total Recorder if I do not have the Lame Encoder?
I've heard that one __must_ have this in order to make MP3 recordings!
But as far as I can tell, I have no lame Encoder on here! Could it be
that it's in Total Recorder somewhere?

Re: goldwave questions

2010-05-01 Thread Rob Tabor

Hi, Julie and all.

Can you kindly tell me how to record streaming audio from the web using
Goldwave? I have looked through the user control preferences tabs and find
no option that allows recording from the web. Perhaps a stream ripper is
required to capture the streaming web audio which is then loaded as a
supported GW file? Thanks in advance.

Best regards

Hi

Yes, you can record live streams from the internet using gold wave. I do
it all the time.

Ok no problem. Just curious that was all. Try looking in the about

Re: goldwave questions

2010-05-01 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello Rob and list: Yes..that was most helpful in solving this lame
Encoder mystery! I searched..and found that there are four occurrences of
that Lame encoder..I remember someone saying on this list that, in order
to make MP3 files, one _had_ to have the Lame Encoder in order to do this!
There was nothing in the programs menu that indicated that I had it; nor
did I see anything in Add/Remove programs, so I was somewhat mystified! I
know I have recorded and played countless MP3 files..but how could this be
if I didn't have the encoder? Guess it's all in knowing what the exact name
is..and knowing exactly how to go about looking for it! Also..I thought this
was the case concerning Gold Wave (that you couldn't schedule it to record
when you weren't going to be around)..I actually did download what is
supposed to be a trial version of Gold Wave..but haven't done anything
with it yet; I mainly had wanted to get Gold Wave so I would have more
flexibility of changing bit and sample rate in files if I needed to (Total
Recorder will do this)..but as I understand it, Gold Wave will give you more
choices! Is this correct?

Re: goldwave questions

2010-05-01 Thread Rob Tabor

Hi, Dan.
When you purchased your licensed copy of Goldwave you should have received
an email containing your product User ID and authorization code key. These
are then entered in the user control preferences dialog box. However, I
won't swear to it as I am unable to locate the authorization codes entry
field in my GW interface. THis is probably because this filed may have
disappeared after my copy was automaticly validated. At any rate, I have
found the Goldwave on board help files very helpful in enabling me to use
the Goldwave record and playback interfaces very effectively and
confidently.

As for your second question, I will defer to others as I am also curious as
to how to capture a web audio stream with it. This may take a stream wripper
to capture the streaming audio into a Goldwave supported file format.
Hopefully we will both get an answer soon.

Best regards
Rob Tabor
