Adjusting volume in Total Recorder?

2013-03-15 Thread gary price
Hello everyone.

Please can anyone tell me if there is a way of adjusting the volume of things
in Total Recorder? I am asking because I have got Software and Soundboard
selected, can record computer fine. But my microphone is really quiet!

I have set my microphone to 100%, so think there is something wrong in Total
Recorder.

Done a test with it and shared it with my friend and one member of this list,
Christopher Hallsworth.
By the way got the Digital Mixer Add-on installed, so this is why I can select
Software and soundboard.

Keyboard shortcuts welcome, as I'm blind. The help isn't very good.
Many thanks, any responses really appreciated.

2013-03-15 Thread Chris H
Gary, just to say the help is very good but is very comprehensive which
may not suit you and anyone else. But it does suit me. Anyway, putting
that aside, do you have a boost setting in your microphone's volume. If
so have a play with that and see how you get on. Mine has a boost
control so should yours since we are using the same sound chip, the
Intel Hd Audio and we are both using the drivers that are shipped with
Windows 7. Good luck.

Re: Mac Versus Windows

2013-03-15 Thread Gary King

Vicky,
I think it would depend on what program was used to create the documents and
what you wanted to do with the documents on each platform. From what I
understand, MS Office doesn't work on the Mac, but there are programs that
can read documents created by MS Word. What I'm not sure about is whether
these programs can modify documents and retain all of the formatting.

The one thing I haven't heard when listening to the many demonstrations of
the Mac is someone doing office work, i.e., performing complex tasks like
mail merge, creating and navigating tables and using styles in formatting
documents.

The only problem I can see with music is that you might need to do some
format conversion if some formats are not directly supported.

Hello Vicki,
As you say, Itunes on both systems shouldn't present a problem.
Pages is a word processor for the mac, and will read, and save
documents back in to word format.
You would use numbers, as a spreadsheet package if you want, it's
fairly accessible I believe, although completely different from excel
for example.

VLC media player works on both systems.

We haven't really scratched the surface, but good luck in the new enterprise.

You can use the free program Freemake Video Converter which is available at:

www.freemake.com

You copy the link of the Youtube page then go to the opened program.

Next go to the edit menu and the only thing there is paste so enter on that.

Next go to the convert menu and choose which format to save the video or
audio.

A dialog will come up. You can set presets or change presets then tab to ...
and enter to select where to save the file.

then tab to convert and hit enter.

You may get some warnings or alerts. I don't know what these say since jaws
won't read them. sometimes you will be able to download the Youtube but some
of the videos are blocked. so if you get a warning or alert try a few more
times to make sure if you can download it or not.

Re: Question About Free You Tube Converter

2013-03-15 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello Dean and list: Thanks for the instructions as to which menus to go in
Freemake Video; now then..could you give us (mainly me) a more precise
direction as to how to accomplish the where to go? I got to where I
needed to be ; even converted a couple of You Tube videos to MP3, but
couldn't tell you how I got there! Part of the problem is my computer (it
tends to want to be a little slow and not respond immediately to commands
that I issue! I would also like to know if this program will allow one to
actually save the You Tube video and all? Converting to MP3 is fine and
I'll find applications where that may be all I want; just the audio! But
which is the best way to convert if I want video as well as audio? Many
thanks for the information you have provided so far!

You can use the free program Freemake Video Converter which is available
at:

www.freemake.com

You copy the link of the Youtube page then go to the opened program.

Next go to the edit menu and the only thing there is paste so enter on
that.

Next go to the convert menu and choose which format to save the video or
audio.

A dialog will come up. You can set presets or change presets then tab to
... and enter to select where to save the file.

then tab to convert and hit enter.

You may get some warnings or alerts. I don't know what these say since
jaws won't read them. sometimes you will be able to download the Youtube
but some of the videos are blocked. so if you get a warning or alert try a
few more times to make sure if you can download it or not.

Well, I'm not sure how much talking about accessing music files on both
a Windows PC and a Mac are stretching the list topic, since it seems
pretty on topic to me, but asking about an OCR application on a Mac
doesn't seem to have anything to do with this list at all. That's just

Re: Mac Versus Windows

2013-03-15 Thread Larry
OK now, just to set the record straight, someone was asking about
using MSOffice on the Mac, and that was what I was referencing. You
are definitely right, audio and music questions are very much on
topic. I didn't want to add to what I thought might be a continuation
of the subject of word processors and the like by asking the question
I did, however, I thought with the set of Mac users on this list,
that someone might reply to my query in private and direct me to a
web site where I might find out what I wanted to know, or even
better, about any experience they had using such programs with a Mac.
I really don't want to have to go to the trouble of subscribing to
another list, just to have such a question dealt with, especially
since I specified private communication on the matter. I am not a Mac
user at present, but was thinking of possibly making the switch as
soon as I have enough cash on hand to give it serious consideration.

My reference to the off topic nature of my question was meant as self
deprecation, not as a put down of any particular poster.

My apologies for your misperceived impertinence,

Larry

Freemake Video Converter and Youtube

2013-03-15 Thread Dean Masters
First you must get the URL of the Youtube video you want. I have five
e-mails which each has one link to a video. I used the append to clipboard
to have all five links on my clipboard. If you are not comfortable with this
or don't know how to do this, you could open a text editor and copy and
paste each URL into the text editor. Here are my links:

http://www.youtube.com/user/fourtwelvevideos

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNuQbJst4Lk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32-k2_VLq_M

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsl6YXHdWnE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1v=PcwGrzA8Cj4feature=endscreen

If you have them all on your clipboard you can go to your previously opened
Freemake Video Converter. If you copy them to a text editor just select all
and copy with control + c then tab to your previously opened Freemake Video
Converter.

Hit alt

Arrow over to edit

Paste will be the only item on that menu so hit enter. This pastes the links
into the program.

Hit alt

arrow over to convert menu

Down arrow to the format you want to save the file in. If you only want the
audio arrow down to mp3. If you want the video then choose one of the video
formats in the menu.

I have chosen mp3 so that is what I entered on in the convert menu

A dialog will come up. the first thing you hear is mp3 output parameters

Tab once and you will find a combo box and it will say custom.

Tab again and there is a button to create a preset. If you like to use
presets you can go through the dialog for each preset you wish to create.
but I don't use presets. I just edit the custom preset that is there.

So I tab one more time to edit preset

Another dialog will open and you will hear mp3 preset editor

Tab once and you will hear custom which is what I use so tab again

Here is a combo box to choose the bit rate of your file. You can up and down
arrow through the combo box to find the bit rate you would like. Youtube
videos aren't usually that great so you don't need a high bit rate. I will
set mine at 128 kbps

Tab again and you can choose but I usually leave this at 44,100 hz

Tab again and there is a combo box where you can choose between mono and
stereo by arrowing up and down

the next time you tab jaws doesn't say anything so I don't know if anything
is there or not so tab once more to the OK button and hit enter.

You will end back at your original dialog at edit preset.

Tab again and there is a button to delete a preset so tab again

The next two tabs jaws speaks nothing so I don't know if anything is there
or not.

Tab to the button that says ... and hit enter

Another dialog will open up. This is a tree view just like My Computer or
Windows Explorer. so arrow through the tree view to find a folder you would
like your mp3 to end up in.

Once you have chosen a folder tab twice to the OK button and hit enter.

You will be returned to the top of the original dialog.

Tab all the way through the dialog. If you would like your files to show up
in iTunes then check the checkbox near the end of the dialog. Check the box
by hitting the spacebar.

Tab to the convert button and hit enter.

The program will let you know the percentage of the work that has been done.
When it is through a window will come up that says success. Hit alt + f4 to
close this window.

Tab to the program and it will also let you know the work is finished. Hit
alt + f4 to get back to the program.

when I checked the folder I saved the files into I found that it only saved
three out of the five files. so I will have to check the links again and try
to download the other two to make sure they are not being blocked by
Youtube. some files are blocked so they cannot be saved.

I hope this was helpful.

Dean

Hello Dean and list: Thanks for taking the time to write this out for us
who want to use Freemake; it should be most helpful and I am keeping this in
hopes to make the next experience with the program easier! One more

to use as far as that list is concerned? You said if we just want audio, we
want MP3. But I gather that for video that there are several choices?

when I checked the folder I saved the files into I found that it only
saved three out of the five files. so I will have to check the links again
and try to download the other two to make sure they are not being blocked
by Youtube. some files are blocked so they cannot be saved.

I hope this was helpful.

OK now, just to set the record straight, someone was asking about
using MSOffice on the Mac, and that was what I was referencing. You
are definitely right, audio and music questions are very much on
topic. I didn't want to add to what I thought might be a continuation
of the subject of word processors and the like by asking the question
I did, however, I thought with the set of Mac users on this list, that
someone might reply to my query in private and direct me to a web site
where I might find out what I wanted to know, or even better, about
any experience they had using such programs with a Mac. I really don't
want to have to go to the trouble of subscribing to another list, just
to have such a question dealt with, especially since I specified
private communication on the matter. I am not a Mac user at present,
but was thinking of possibly making the switch as soon as I have
enough cash on hand to give it serious consideration.

My reference to the off topic nature of my question was meant as self

My apologies for your misperceived impertinence,

Well, I'm not sure how much talking about accessing music files on
both a Windows PC and a Mac are stretching the list topic, since it
seems pretty on topic to me, but asking about an OCR application on a
Mac doesn't seem to have anything to do with this list at all. That's
just my $0.02. It might be best if you ask this question on a Mac list.

Say, while we are stretching the bounds of the list topic, can anybody
briefly tell me about any OCR programs for the Mac that are comparable
to Openbook or Kurzweil for use by the blind. I'm sure there are
programs that will scan and convert to text, but what I'm really
concerned about is convenience of page orientation, columnization
etc. I

looked at the page that Dane suggested, but at first glance, I didn't
see anything about OCR.

Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated, and you can
send privately if that would be more appropriate to discussion.
Thanks,

Larry

Hello Vicki,
As you say, Itunes on both systems shouldn't present a problem.
Pages is a word processor for the mac, and will read, and save
documents back in to word format.
You would use numbers, as a spreadsheet package if you want, it's
fairly accessible I believe, although completely different from excel
for example.

VLC media player works on both systems.

We haven't really scratched the surface, but good luck in the new
enterprise.

regards,

Joe
