Re: Question About Winamp And MP4 Files

2014-07-04 Thread JM Casey
In my experience winamp will play most avi files ok, has problems with some
.mkv...but the extension just tells the kind of container that is used and
not the codec, so there's really no telling. It's frustrating and I'm afraid
I just gave up on the process and turned to VLC for that reason. I don't
remember many of the keystrokes myself but I know there's a list on the
Internet somewhere.

Hello J M: Yes...I feel the same way about Winamp as you; I, too, have
seen

Winamp play videos, but am wondering if those videos were originally WMP
files (Winamp _will_ play those! Anyhow I've not been able to get Winamp
to
play this particular MP4 video (it'll only give me audio) but yes; VLC
does

a good job; I just don't know the keystrokes to make it do various things!

Hey Tom.

Let me just say that I love winamp and have used it for almost fifteen
years

now, with no sign of stopping...
But only for audio.

I have never quite been able to figure out why winamp seems to play some
videos and not others. There are some codec issues and searching the
internet for certain codecs (depending on the type of encoding...which you
can't always tell from the extension, you have to look at the video info)
has increased the number of videos winamp will play just fine, but there
are

some files I've just never been able to get to play. Sometimes there's no
video, sometimes neither video or audio.

VLC on the other hand will play every video I've ever encountered without
a

hitch or without any hunting around on the net for obscure codec packs. I
love it for that reason and if I ever have people over and we want to
watch

videos/movies, VLC works every time.

You can try this for the essentials pack. I just found it with a google

same thing

http://winamp-essentials-pack.software.informer.com/5.6/
I won't guarantee it will solve the problem but it can't hurt to install

Tom,

It looks like you have to click on the link that says download. It lists
the number of kilobytes of the file and the number of votes it has. It looks
like a trustworthy site. Just try it :P
It will probably send you an .exe self-extracting archive. If it doesn't,
just dump the contents of the archive in your winamp\plugins folder.

Is Integrated Sound Adequate?

2014-07-04 Thread Steve Pattison

Hi all,

I'm planning to buy a new computer. With the rapid advancements in
motherboards and hardware generally I'm interested in people's thoughts
about whether it's still better to buy a dedicated sound card or have we
now reached the stage where using integrated sound on the motherboard is
adequate? I bought my current PC in July 2008 so it is about six years
old. I'm currently running a Creative sound card.

I've never used integrated sound on the motherboard on my home PC
before. Also I don't need the most expensive sound card available but I
don't want it to be too basic either. One feature I would like is the
ability to provide some type of virtual surround sound as I have limited
space where my PC is located and only room for a two speaker system.

I appreciate there is no right or wrong answer to this question but I
thought this list would be a good place to ask because there are bound
to be a lot of people who are a bit more fussy about audio quality etc.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

Regards Steve.

 Hi Tom,

While in Winamp try pressing Alt+V while the video is playing. Then if
you want to see the video in full screen mode press Alt+Enter. I hope
 this helps.

Hello list: Am wondering if there's a way to get Winamp to play the
 video
of an MP4 file? I got a video the other night; if I just click it as
 is,
 it
comes up in Winamp; only thing is that it plays only the audio! I can
 see
the video if I have it play in something like VLC (and that's fine) but
 was
just wondering if I could make Winamp play the video as well and if so,
 how
 is it done?

Personally I think it's still better to get a different card. As a
broadcaster I wouldn't use the integraded audio.

Subject: Is Integrated Sound Adequate?

I've never used integrated sound on the motherboard on my home PC before.
Also I don't need the most expensive sound card available but I don't want
it to be too basic either. One feature I would like is the ability to
provide some type of virtual surround sound as I have limited space where
my PC is located and only room for a two speaker system.

I appreciate there is no right or wrong answer to this question but I
thought this list would be a good place to ask because there are bound to
be a lot of people who are a bit more fussy about audio quality etc.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

Regards Steve.

If you want virtual surround sound or as I state it, fake surround sound,
then let me recommend the Bose Companion 5 Multy Media speakers. Note they
are #$300 though. But they are cool for what they are. They at least will
give you epic Bose sound.
