Annoying text to speech pauses

2016-01-01 Thread ann

Hi,

I'm trying to use the programmed called QRead. Mostly it works great,
however, when I activate the Speak option to read the text out loud, the
pauses between each line of text are so long that it is beyond annoying.
I've tried the standard Microsoft voices, David & Sera, Eloquence, and
Ivona voices. eloquence and Ivona do the best job, but there is still a
noticeable pause between lines of text with them as well.

I have contacted the program developer about this issue. But does anyone
have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks,
~Ann

Re: MP3 Direct Cut Question

2011-07-15 Thread Ann
You certainly can.

Use the B and N keys to select the beginning and end of the part you
want, then hit Control+E...I think. Anyhow, if I was wrong about the
actual keyboard shortcut, there is a Save Selection in the File menu,
and you can use this to save a part of a file to another file all of its
own.

Re: MP3 Direct Cut Question

2011-07-15 Thread Ann
actually, it is quite accessible, and you can edit MP3's without having
to uncompress and re-compress them. It can also record directly in to MP3.

Just look for the list of keyboard shortcuts in either the help menu or
in the manual, itself.

but, if you need to do any fancier editing, such as noise reduction,
click/pop removal, time stretch etc., then you need something like Goldwave.

Re: Downloading mp3 files, changing to wave files for a standard audio cd.

2011-04-10 Thread Ann
Vinny

Do the wav files play on your computer?

When you burn your CD are you absolutely certain that you are choosing
to make an Audio CD, and not a data CD? You need to choose the Audio CD,
which basically means a standard 74 or 80 minutes CD with nothing but
audio on it.

I don't know how Express Burn represents this, though. I use Nero to
burn CDs, so I can't give specific instructions there.

Good luck.

JFW11 not reading goldwave peak levels

2011-01-25 Thread Ann
Hi folks,

I just updated to the latest Goldwave, and also the latest JFW scripts.
I am using the last version of Jaws11 on an XP machine.

I can no longer read my recording peak levels. I start to record, hold
down the Control key for a few seconds, and then press Alt+F6. But the
peak levels are not listed in the Control section, though I am seeing a
few more buttons such as Play1, Play2, etc.

Any thoughts and/or work-arounds?

I second Roger's praises of this program. I have been enjoying Pandora
for the last few months on my Android phone, and for the last week on my
new iPod Touch, both of which have totally accessible apps. It's great

 Greetings Folks,

With the very recent initial software release of a truly wonderful Pandora
third party interface known as: HOPE, a blind-friendly approach for Pandora,
we are now on equal footing with all of the other Pandora Radio listeners
 out there.

For the uninitiated, Pandora Radio, found at:

 http://www.pandora.com

is a very innovative web site, that seeks to allow users to set up various
radio stations, based on their musical preferences, both by individual
 artist and or specific genres.

The Pandora radio site is almost completely unusable by blind folks with
screen reading technology, as they rely on Adobe's extensive use of Flash
technology, to deliver all of the usable web content and adjustments to
account options and the music player.

Pandora is much more than just a radio or music web site that actually finds
music based upon your specific and wide ranging solutions but I do not feel
like writing all of that crap out. I am not nearly as good as my friend Hap
Holly, is at spinning a good yarn.

Basically, the visually impaired developer of Qwitter, a third party
application layer gateway for the popular social networking site, Twitter,
has gone and done it again with his extremely unique approach to Pandora.
Based on some Python programming skills, and some excellent use of the
Pandora very secret XML technology, he has made a completely accessible
 interface to the Pandora site...

It is $10.00 which seems to be a one time purchase for as many updates as he
can try to write, before his fingers fall off.

The developer, Chris Toth has made a truly usable interface to Pandora. Once
you configure a few stations, either based on artist or genre, you will
never listen to Internet radio quite the same way again. No commercials, no
speaking in between the tracks, just good music of all styles.

Pandora uses your suggestions to essentially pick songs and artists in or
close to the same musical style or genre/sound.

 It is unbelievable!!!

Chris with his HOPE application has made the Pandora experience completely
blind-friendly by eliminating having to even use the Pandora site.

A blind user cannot even independently create their initial account on the
Pandora's.com web site. With H O P E, all all all things are usable and all
account creation, and all of the same interactions that a sighted user would
experience, have been built directly into Pandora's third party gateway, H O
 P E.

The H O P E program can be found at:

 http://q-continuum.net/hope/

I want everyone who is interested to visit Chris's site, and ask him
questions and of course purchase the program to further the development of
 HOPE.

Believe me, from a fellow who has used Pandora since 2006, his program was
 well worth waiting for.

Check it out, and hope you enjoy the accessible experience that HOPE brings
 to Pandora.com

If anyone wants to contact the Pandora support staff, in case they have
questions or want to purchase for 36 bucks per year, a unlimited listening
 experience, please e-mail:

 supp...@pandora.com

The subscription process is only technically open to U.S. subscribers,
unless, you happen to have a proxy gateway to make it look like you are in
fact in the U.S. That is another discussion for another time...

Re: Noise Reduction in Goldwave, I'm probably stating the very obvious

 Hi,

The noise reduction is adequate in Goldwave as long as you absolutely do
not accept any default settings the program gives you, but are willing
to play around with it a bit. Soundforge has a better Noise Reduction
program, and you can even use this plugin in Goldwave to a certain
extent. But, Goldwave will certainly do for a lot of simpler noise
reduction tasks.

My comment is this. I have a license for Total Recorder Professional

To be frank I was amazed at the quality of the result I got for a

Furthermore, the sections in the manual describing how the noise

without boring anyone to sleep so all one has to do if they want to
try the noise reduction function is to read for a minute or so and
the have the basic knowledge required to get started.

So what's Goldwave worth these days, $59.00 or thereabouts? Damn

Re: gold wave and recording meter query

 Hi Roger,

Have you tried holding down the Control key when your recording has begun ?

once the sound starts, hold down the Control key for a few seconds,
Release the Control key,
Press Alt+F6 to get in to the Control window,
Tab or shift tab until Jaws says something like read only Edit: Record xxx
This should give you your recording time, plus the recording level. You can
press the D key while in this Read Only box to switch the meter display between
decibels and percentages.

Hope that works for you.

converting an .m4b file to MP3 without using iTunes in Windows XP

2009-05-09 Thread Ann

Hi folks,

Does anyone know how to convert an M4b, which is some kind of, I think,
Apple extension for audiobook to an mp3 file? I know that,
theoretically, iTunes can do this, but it doesn't work on my Windows XP
computer. i can use itunes to convert the file to every other format,
but when I try to convert it to MP3, iTunes crashes my computer. I think
the crash is somehow related to the fact that this file is long, about 9
hours, only in one large file instead of split up in to disks, and iTunes
seems to be extremely processor intensive.

I have a 3 GHZ machine, with 1 GB of Ram,and tons of hard drive space
though not enough to comfortably convert it to .wav, and iTunes is the
only program that crashes so badly when trying to make MP3 files. It
also seems to be the only program I have that will open the file.

any advice would be appreciated. I've never had to work with an m4b
format before.

Back to the topic however, are there any programs from PBS or UK that

  Hi, folks.

I'm probably about to ask a question that's painfully obvious to many.
But I'm showing up at the descriptive video/SAP party much later than
some. I'm writing to the JAWS list because I am a JAWS user. I'm
writing to the Blind iPod list because purchasing video content on
iTunes is now accessible through use of the J-tunes interface. So I
hope others view this question as at least somewhat relevant.

I'm presuming, first of all, that most Hollywood feature films on DVD
come with a descriptive video track encoded somewhere on them. I'm
presuming the same could be true with downloadable films and TV shows,
too, as from iTunes. Certainly, most DVDs representing TV programs
where action was described in the first place, should have that same
DVS output on the subsequent DVD release. If this is true, I'm
  wondering about the following:

  1. How can I be sure, if a film or TV show is downloaded, to get the
download version that has descriptive video encoded? Is there a good
source for such material? Is there a way I can know for sure about
  this feature before I buy?

  2. When playing such downloaded or DVD content on the computer, is
there a software player that is fairly accessible and which also has a
menu option I can invok for activating or turning off the
descriptions? I've not seen this in RealPlayer or Windows Media
Player, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.

  3. Am I being completely naive here? Obviously, I know a lot of
stuff isn't accessible on its face, and I realize legislation in front
of Congress is attempting to make much of this universal. I've heard
of some people going to a place like the Serotek network to download
versions of films that have been uploaded specifically for those
wanting video description. But is this truly necessary? Or can the
same content be obtained through regular channels with just a little
bit of work on the part of the blind consumer?

Realtek HD Audio Card help

2009-02-08 Thread Terese Ann Goren

Hey Everyone,

I was about to audition for my spot on ACB radio when I realized my
mic was looping back on itself. I've looked at all the forums and
from what I've seen I've got things set up right but I can't seem to
find a fix for this. I have a Realtek HD Audio Card and from what I
understand many folks have problems adjusting the mic settings. Can
anyone suggest a fix for this or can anyone suggest a good
alternative replacement that does work with Window Eyes? I have a
LapTalk so I'm not sure I can swap them out. Come to think of it I
was told the last time I used skype I was looping back badly then
too. Until a month ago my mic wasn't working at all so i guess I'm
making some progress, lol. Thanks much for your help.

That depends on which DSP you're using. Shoutcast puts it on a hidden

We definitely have our own server. No need to purchase anything at

to test if you are comfortable with setting one up yourself on the
very same machine you are using for broadcasting. Lots of folks do
that just for demo and testing purposes.

I don't know if the 6800's are yet prepared for as much as a 16 gig
card, but certainly a 4gb card would give you enough of a music choice
to keep ya happy for a good while.

I use my 6800 as a music player, although I do have two very major
complaints about it. First, I usually use it with Bluetooth with some
very nice Plantronics Bluetooth stereo headphones I got about 15
months ago, but yes, that does help drain one's battery, even if it's
the higher-capacity one. Second, I'm not a fan of Windows Media
Player, and that's all you get on WM6. Where the heck is Winamp for
WM6 is what I want to know. There are other choices, but none as
accessible as WMP, clunky and slow to respond as it is.

Re: DVD audio extractor,an accessible one that is?

2008-08-15 Thread ANN
Hi,

I have used Imtoo's DVD Audio Ripper for years, and find it quite
accessible with Jaws. I don't know how well it may work with
Window-Eyes, though, but in my opinion, it's faster then DVD Audio
Extractor.

Yeah, I guess if you really want something simple that plays your
mp3s and you don't want to worry about going through menus, the
 player is somewhat usable.
It's definitely no iPod, or Creative Zen Stone or anything like
that. It's most certainly on the lower end of audio players.

Re: looking for freeware wma to mp3 converter

2008-08-05 Thread Terese Ann Goren
There is a great little converter and cd ripper program called Free
Rip. It works well with Window Eyes. You can convert Ogg, WMA, Mp3,
FLAC AND wav files to whichever format you choose. You can also
search the net for track information including album info and lyrics
as well as other songs by the artist. It will of course allow you to
listen to your tracks before you convert. You can get it at www.freerip.com

as for the credit companies not allowing transactions on that site, last

Subject: MP3Sparks

This is another Russian site but I have had little experience of it. When
  I
first registered I was only able to download one track from the site. On
registering I was given a 20 cents bonus to try it out. After that I had
some trouble as I couldn't buy credit with my credit card. They state
  they
do accept credit card payments but when you select that option you are
  told
that that option is not available at this time and to try again in a day
  or
two. What you have to do is register with a site called CMPASS and there
buy E money. You are given an ID number and a PIN number. You then go
  back
to MP3 Sparks and put in both these numbers before you can establish a
balance or refill it. I Have not done this as I am not sure of the
  company
where I buy this e money and as I haven't done anything like that before,
  I
wasn't taking any chances. Also, it is a lot of hassle and I just
  couldn't
be bothered with it. I know Mandy and Trace have used this site and they
could most likely let you know what it is like. The reason for all this
hassle is that MP3 Sparks was originally Allofant3 but they got themselves
involved with the Russian mafia and copyright law. The American's went
  after
them and put pressure on the card companies who no longer allow them to
  use
their cards. After Allofant3 disappeared, MP3 Sparks took it's place but
the problems persist and I haven't used them yet. Registration is again a
problem if you have no sighted help as you need to see a verification
number. The site has disappeared and reappeared a couple of times but it
  is
up and running at the moment. If it continually proves to be stable I may
at some point risk purchasing credit. As I said, I haven't used the site
seriously apart from a trial download. With this site though I understand
you can choose your bit rate and their albums are still 99 cents US each.

Re: CD Ripping

2008-07-22 Thread ANN
Hi,

CDex will allow you to rip a CD as one big file. I do this all the time
with no problems. What you need to do is make sure all tracks are
selected, control_A usually does the job if it isn't automatically done
for you, and then in the convert menu, select the 'Convert a Section' of
the CD. The title of the dialog is misleading because if you have all
tracks selected, then the 'selection' you convert is actually the entire
CD in to one large track. the shortcut key for this is F10, I believe.

listen to and see if they can do the same.

Clear Channel blocks non U. S. residents from listening to all of their
streams including HD2 stations. To my knowledge, they are the only radio
station streaming company who impose this restriction. If you notice CC
Tuner as part of the stream's url and you live outside the States, you will
be excluded.

Needless to say, I am not a big Clear Channel fan.

New conversion program

2008-05-13 Thread Terese Ann Goren
I was having a strange problem with switch where the converted files
would play fine on my computer but when I transferred them to my mp3
player it would play twice as slow.

I came across a little program called freeRip. It will rip files
from CD and convert them as well. It supports mp3, WMA, OGG, and
FLAC. It will also search the web to tag the tracks. There is an
option to play your selected trax before converting or ripping. I
found the program quite accessible with Window Eyes and best of all
when I transfer files to my mp3 player they play correctly. There is
a free ware version or you can purchase a couple more features for I
believe $19.99. The conversion rate in the free version works just
fine for me. You can get more info at http://www.freerip.com

Is it just the sansa's firmware or do they have rockbox installed. Anyway,
it is possible that the sansa itself is the other program that's using the

I'm not sure how to do that. It's something tricky like hold down the record
button whilst you turn the thing off then back on but that's likely not
exactly right. I had one of those for like a week. You'll loose everything
stored on the sansa at least by doing the reset I'm talking about which is
the point. Maybe the sansa would call it formatting it. Unfortunately I
can't give specific instructions but I'm pretty sure it's something that may
 work.

Subject: sites for downloading music

Can anyone recommend any sites that work well with JAWS for purchasing and
downloading music? I tried to download Itunes, but it would not install,
  and
I'm not sure how well it will work with JAWS. I've tried Rhapsody, but I'd
like something that I could buy per song and not have to pay a
  subscription
every month, if there is such a thing.

Re: Internal Tripletalk soundcard wireless headphones issue

2007-03-09 Thread ANN
Hi Mike,

Thanks for all the advice.

When I used my doubletalk internal years ago, I was just able to run it
directly through a line-in jack on my soundcard, using only a mono to stereo
mini adapter to ensure the doubletalk sound came out both sides of my
headphones. But, with all the interference produced, this simple approach
obviusly doesn't work with a tripletalk, with or without a mono to stereo
mini adapter. I had come more or less to much the same ideas as you have
just given me. It might take a bit of fiddling and experimenting but i'll
get it juryrigged sooner or later. All I need is to get a y-adapter or cable.

Thanks again.

i TOO HAVE a TripleTalk Internal; and do much as you do except I run mine
through a fm transmitter and listen to the output on a walkman style
 receiver
 a sangean dt-300vw.

For starters, you will need 2 audio cables with a 1/8 inch plub male on
each end plus a y-cable with a 1/8 inch male plug and 2 1/8 female
 acceptors.
Plug the male end of the y-adaptor either into your transmitter or some
other amplifier that will feed the transmitter.
Then plug an audio cable into the output jack of the TripleTalk and the
other end into one of the 2 female receptors on the y-cable.
The 2nd cable goes from the headphone jack on your pc/soundcard to the
 other receptor of the y-cable.
This way, I can mute the soundcard with still having the ability to use
 the TripleTalk.
I can independently raise and lower the audio volume and have no radio
audio when needed to hear what the screen reader is attempting to read.
While you may well have to modify the setup to accommodate your wireless
 headphones, the concept is this:
feed the signals separately into an audio device prior to transmitting.
It took me months of experimentation when I first got into internet audio
 7 or so years back.
I used this approach first with the DoubleTalk internal and now with the
 TripleTalk internal.

Internal Tripletalk soundcard wireless headphones issue

2007-03-08 Thread ANN
Hi folks,

I just got a new Tripletalk PCI synthesizer, and boy am I excited. I'm one
of those folk who have never been totally satisfied with the performance of
software speech, especially under serious processor access times. But am
having one minor annoyance with it. Apparently, unlike my very old internal
doubletalk synthesizer, this thing puts out a good amount of juice, and I
can't connect it to the Line-In of my soundcard without experiencing some
serious background noises.

Now, can anyone tell me either of the following. How I can connect the
output of this to my soundcard so I can use my wireless headphones to listen
to it privately from anywhere in the house? Or, b. how I might connect my
wireless headphones to both my soundcard the sound output on this
synthesizer? And, I'd like to do any of the above as cheaply as possible.

I have this nagging feeling that the answer to either will be so simple I'll
kick myself when I receive it.

Thanks.

~Ann

Re: the most accessible full featured DVD player.

2007-01-26 Thread Terese Ann Goren
I don't know about accessible but Zenith makes a player with a
display feature that allows you to work around the menus. Just hit
the display button on your remote and select the episode you
want. if it's a movie just hit display 1 and the movie plays. If
you have a multi episode DVD you can select display 1 then display 2
and so on. works great for us. We've owned two Zenith DVD players
so far that have had this feature so I'm assuming it's available on
all their players. Hope this helps.

Baen Books Free to Disabled Readers

Baen Books (
www.baen.com),
a publisher of science fiction, will provide its books to fans who are
blind, paralysed, or dyslexic, or are amputees, in electronic form free of
charge,
effective immediately.

Baen Books is making this offer in recognition of Veterans Day, and all our
disabled military veterans. Many Baen authors are veterans themselves, using
a military setting as the setting of their tales. Right now convalescing
vets might welcome an exciting, fast-action tale to pass the time.

Jim Baen, founder of Baen Books, who passed on June 28, 2006, decided to
provide each challenged reader with a permanent pass to the regular
e-publication
of Baen's new books. His successor, publisher Toni Weisskopf, is
implementing his idea with this program.

Since 1999, Baen has published its new books as ebooks each month, in
several formats, with no Digital Rights Management, through WebScriptions (
www.webscriptions.net),
for a small fee. Now, this service will be available at no cost to the
disabled, who must apply for this privilege.

Applications will be processed by ReadAssist (
www.readassist.org),
a volunteer group devoted to helping disabled readers find the books they
want in the form they need, and join the community of fandom. The
application
form has been set up by ReadAssist, and can be found through either
WebScriptions or ReadAssist.

If you'd like to volunteer to help ReadAssist, please contact them at their

Audible question

2006-11-14 Thread Terese Ann Goren

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if there is any way to convert the audible files so I
could use winamp to play them. I may already be able to do this but
I'm not sure how. I just would rather not have the files encrypted
so I can take them anywhere. Any ideas? thanks for any advice.

Re: Fw: Not able to process visa

2006-10-08 Thread Terese Ann Goren
Okay, so I sent to the site and tried to buy a xrost pin. Not an
easy task let me tell ya.

First, I had to pick from one of three ways to buy. The first option
called click and pay was by far the least complicated. It did
however have one of those pesky visual verifications at the
bottom. Once I filled everything out I had to go back to the xrost
site and choose the pay with click and pay button, pick how much I
wanted to add. Then I had to copy my pin and ID from the xrost page
and paste it into the all of mp3 site. Simple eh? Maybe not! I
think next time I'll wait till the credit card thing is
fixed. Sheesh! The things I'll do for cheap music.

Try going thru that paypass option. I looked at that and you had to
go thru paypass and go to one of their sponsors to buy and card from
them. by the time I was done I had gone thru five layers and still
hadn't gotten to where I needed to be to buy anything. Click and buy
is by far the easiest of the three choices, but I will say it did
take me quite a while to get thru that process as well.

Re: allofmp3, com problem

2006-10-03 Thread Terese Ann Goren
I thot that was weird myself but apparently that's how you have to do
it now. Happily tho once I refilled my balance it showed up under
explorer without a problem.

Has anyone tried to refill their balance in the usual way on allofmp3 and
been told they have to use alltunes?

If I use alltunes and log in using my existing name and password as it says
and refills the balance, do I do it in the normal way and can I still use
the balance on allofmp3?

Thanks

Has anyone ran into this before?

2006-09-24 Thread Terese Ann Goren
Hi all,

I installed allofmp3 explorer on my husbands computer last night. As
I began to download files I realized it seemed to be happenning a bit
faster then usual. Now explorer says the files have been downloaded
but when I go to play the files I get a system error stating the
files cannot be found.

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem or who I can
contact? I've looked all over the computer and no files. Thanks so
much for your help.

I agree. We had a Milestone for about 20 minutes, grin. Took it out
of the box and played with it a bit, couldn't seem to get it to do
much so we packed it back up and sent it back. I've spent a bit more
time on the iPod but it's looking like that one may go back too.

Re: Allofmp3 registration

2006-07-24 Thread Terese Ann Goren
I usually have no problem with allofmp3. Occasionally I'll have a
track that doesn't download but fortunately because you are paying by
the mega-byte the money isn't actually subtracted from your account
until the track is downloaded.

I have encountered a slow server a few times though.

  Hi Gary and list:

If you think verification is the only problem with allofmp3.com, think
again. They have an album I want. I've ordered it at least three times. It

  the

Subject: audible.com

hi All,

I have been a member of audible.com for some time. I don't
have any trouble
getting books, but I do have a couple of questions.
Whenever I upgrade
winamp, it takes over trying to play those files. It can't
play them. The
only way I have found around this is to unselect all
filetypes in Winamp,
which defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.
Does anyone know
what filetypes I need to uncheck so that Winamp won't try
and play my
audible files?

My other question concerns the portability of these files.
I do not have an
mp3 player at this time, so I have been burning them onto
audio cd. The
problem is that I often get this horrible crackling noise in
the disk. Many
of my disks are impossible to listen to. I do have a cd
player that will
play mp3's. Can I convert the audible files to mp3 without
burning them
onto audio first? I could then get several books on one
disk, and that
would be quite handy. I'm open to ideas. Thanks.

 hi Simon
yes, i managed to download and run SayPad eventually. i have also changed
the speech engine to Mary both in SayPad and in Speech under control
 panel.
but surprisingly this only works while in saypad. it ceases to function
 when
i close saypad. i still get the default sam whenever i run narrator.
is there a way to set Mary speech engine permanently in narrator as
 opposed
 to default sam voice?
your advice is greatly appreciated. apologise for my broken English as
English is not my native language.
 thank you in advance.

ok now go to programs and select say pad, in there its a normal
 windows
 menu
layout, press alt and s, that will get you to the speech menu if you
 then
set the main voice to mike or Mary, and then the special voice menus
narrator will use the selected voice next time you run it.

I
had to install 1.4. I should have just over wrote the 1.3
installation with 1.4 but did not. When I uninstalled 1.3 the
 problem
you all have began on my machine. I thought with the
 installation
 of
1.4 it would fix, but no. I got narrator back though with
 another
fix, (forgot which one) but not being able to choose another
 voice.
 I
can choose it but when I attempt to leave the dialog box it
 comes
 up

Re: AC3 audio

2006-06-12 Thread Terese Ann Goren
Are you using your computer or a DVD player? Do you have a display
button on your dvd remote? Michael and I have the Next generation
series and got around this problem by taking these steps.
while the video is stopped press the display button
then press #1 on your keypad
This will play the first episode. Follow the same sequence for
episodes 2 thru 4. Occasionally this doesn't work as the menus are
marked as an episode, simply go to the next number. works like a charm.

this is probably one of the strangest streams I've ever heard. If
you fall asleep with FX Radio on, be prepared to have some very very
  strange dreams indeed.

At 06:04 PM 6/8/2006, you wrote:
What is FX Radio? Well, it's a concept that Derek Lane and I came up
with last summer when we were both rather bored.
Basically, it's the result of what happens when you load three
instances of winamp equipped with crossfaders, then load a whole ton
of high quality sound effects libraries into each winamp, making
sure, of course, that everything is randomized.
The sequence of events that can happen as a result of this are
rather strange, and many interesting things can happen to your mind
as a result of listening to the random combinations of odd things that
 occur.

Have you ever seen a bird driving a car under water, all the while
being shot at by a telephone? Or, perhaps, little kids playing in
underwater construction sites? How about frogs that make things
explode, sheep making things blow up, or machine guns blasting
through a calm cafe, all the while everyone seems to be oblivious to
the fact that they are being shot at, and, in fact, don't seem to
 mind very much?
All these things can and have been known to happen on FX Radio, all
sound effects, all the time, 24 hours a day!

To tune in, you will need a streaming media player compatible with
AAC+ streaming, such as Winamp (5.1 or higher, except 5.22 which has
a bug that breaks AAC streams), VLC Mediaplayer, or Foobar 2000.

If you have a compatible player, go to one of the following addresses:
 shoutcast: http://fx.pdaudio.net:80
 icecast: http://tbrn.net:/fx.aac

Note: If you are using the Thompson mp3 pro decoder for Winamp, the
shoutcast stream will not work unless it is disabled. The icecast
feed will, however, since the .aac extention will not be passed off
 to the mp3 pro decoder.

The bandwidth is low enough such that you can listen with either a
dial-up or broadband connection. Either way, you'll still get the
same great quality that AAC+ streaming provides.

Also, as the shoutcast server is on port 80, this means you can
listen to FX Radio behind any proxy server that only allows access
to http, such as universities and other institutions. Yes, a nice
distraction during class might be good, don't you think?
Why not freak out your friends, classmates or co-workers while
you're at it? Maybe all of the above?

Close your eyes, put on some headphones, tune in, and get ready for
a very strange, and altogether different experience!
 It's FX Radio! No, really?

You could try Winamp 5.094. from what I understand it has that plug
in and is still accessible. You can download it from
www.olddownloads.com They hav every version of winamp in exhistance.

Terese

Hi,
I subscribed to a new podcast today, but the files it downloads havve
the extension .m4a. I'm using version 2.90 of WinAmp, which doesn't play
this type of file by default, but I thought I heard that later versions can
play it. However, I'm reluctant to upgrade to a later version, because 2.90
is working fine for me. I tried converting the M4A file to an MP3 with the
trial version of Easy CDDA Extractor, but it gave me an error about
decoding the file or something. Does anyone know if there's a plugin for
WinAmp 2.90 that can play this type of file, or should I upgrade to a later
version?
 Thanks.

Subject: broadcasting question

hi list,
I'm interested in going into radio broadcasting. I know there are people out
there who have done it, so i emailed a local school that teaches a course
for broadcasting. here is the reply I received when i asked about a blind
person attending.

Hi Brandon, sorry about the delay in getting back to you. Unfortunately this
is not a program that is suitable to the visually impaired. Mainly because
the cost of accomodating the expense of required equipment would exceed over
$500,000.00. Not only the expense, but radio stations and their corporate
ownership will never incur such an expense, nor is it feasible to create a
studio suitable for this. I understand your disappointment, however, wanted
to be very honest with you regarding the reality of this. I truly wish you
well in all of your future endeavors and if there is anything you require
further information on, please feel free to email or call me. Once again,
thank you for your interest in CSMB.

Regards

Jacquie Hammond
President/CSMB

Now what is this 500 thousand dollar cost all about? I would be able to, as
far as I know and I did visit a radio studio to use the mixing boards, and
they use windows software for the playlist editing, so it would be a simple
matter of creating scripts. I'm quite curious to see, has anyone got any
clues?
thanks

Biblos text to MP3 software

2006-05-21 Thread Ann
HI,

I got the Biblos software downloaded, but am wondering a few things. To
start with, can you get it to read a document from beginning to end, and
how? And, when making MP3's, can you set the sample rate along with the bit
rate of the files?

Also, has anyone managed to download his JFW scripts, at least I think
that's what the download link meant, for the software?

Take care.

Re: XM PCR

2006-04-29 Thread Ann
They did, but you can still activate/reactivate an XM PCR unit if necessary.

It is, as far as I know, the most accessible satellite radio unit, and if I
can find one cheap enough, I might just get myself an extra unit on Ebay,
sometime. . I like being able to know what's playing when I'm not online,
and since I'm still on dial up, by the time I get online to look at:

www.xm411.comm

the song has changed. But, that site does work very well for me.

If I remember right, they discontinued the XMPCR about a year and a half ago
because of some software some guy created which allowed users to set the
XMPCR to not only record songs/programs from XM as individual MP3's, but to
tag them with ID3 tags as well. The creator mainly did this for the
concerts that used to air on XM Live, but the RIAA freaked out because they
figured this would lead to more music being available for file-sharing and
felt XM wasn't doing enough to protect copyrights and such.

For those who want to see what's playing though, go to www.xm411.com. The
MacroMedia Flash movie thing seems to be mostly accessible. I've used it
successfully.

On a sidenote, as an XM subscriber, I've suggested that they do like the DMX
Music service that was on my digital cable used to do...If you clicked on a
channel, it'd show a list of the last ten songs that had played on that
channel. Since then, Comcast has switched to Music Choice, whose site, last
time I checked, is pretty uninformative. For those who ARE XM subscribers,
I made my suggestion of showing the last ten songs on each channel to the
head of music programming, Jon Zellner...Very cool guy. If you're an XM
subscriber who uses a screenreader and would like to see this, either use
the contact links at xmradio.com, or email Mr. Zellner at

One thing to consider before buying one is if you can activate it

on. I enjoy mine. It is the best designed digital radio for us if
it is satellite or any other of digital radio. They won't make the
others where we can see what song is playing.

Re: XM PCR

2006-04-26 Thread Ann
That is slightly inaccurate, and a terrible price. The PCR won't work with
absolutely all XM antennas, for starters. Also, when I purchased mine, the
antenna was included, and the price was around $55, including SH. The price
might be acceptable if they included the home antenna, but if you have to
buy it separately, it can cost around $35, just for the antenna alone. I
know this because I had to buy a replacement antenna after accidentally
breaking my own.

It's not an ad. It's a windows Pop Up you can enable or disable

hi. I got so disgusted with version 5.2 of Winamp that I just went

to do all kinds of tricks to get it to work properly. In version 5.13
of Winamp, you don't, it just works as it should, every time. Now I
ask you which version would you install?
Yep, 5.13, until Nullsoft can fix the library, or until someone, with
some JAWS scripting abilitiesand/or Window-eyes set file
manipulation, can make the library, the 5.2 version of the library
   this is, more accessible.

hi. Well, there's that word, accessible again. I would say the
only real issue is with the media library. So if you don't plan on
making use of it a lot, you should be fine. A more screenreader
friendly version can be gotten from
http://www.toonhead-online.com/winamp513_full.exe

However when you install it, as I've said many times already on this
subject but I'll say it again, when installing Winamp, make sure that
the modern skin support is not! checked. By default, everything is
turned on. So when installing it, arrow down the list of options and
uncheck modern skin support. You'll know it's unchecked for sure
when you get to the skin selection part of the instalation. Make
sure that the radio button for classic skin for slower machines and
greater accessibility is checked. If it isn't, you know modern skin
support is still checked, so you'll need to go back and uncheck it.
Otherwise, you'll have nothing but trouble with it. If you have a
version of JAWS after 4.51, press insert plus h for specific hotkeys
for the window you're in, or insert plus w gives you hotkeys for all
Winamp windows.

Hope this helps.

Winamp question

2006-04-03 Thread Terese Ann Goren
Hi all,

I have an interesting problem, I've burned a cd for a meeting I'm
doing sound for tonite. The tracks are mixed so that the music will
be a continuous cross fade. The problem is Winamp seems to drop out
at the beginning of each song. Kind of ruins the continuous play
idea. Is there a setting in winamp I can change so that it will play
the way my mix was intended? Thanks so much for your help.

I have just obtained a creative 20g player. It has reasonable

I really enjoy my Jukebox Zen Extra. It does use windows explorer to
transfer files. There is an easy to use play list
manager. Unfortunately, you do need sight to work the menus in order
to change playlists on the unit itself but the player itself is
easily manageable by learning sequences. Would be groovy if Rock Box
worked on it.

Re: m4a

2006-03-17 Thread Terese Ann Goren
it has been my experience that when you download something from
ITunes you can't play it on any other player on your system unless
you burn it onto a cd and then rip it back on there. The licensing
is very proprietary. As for m4a format yes, winamp does play that type.

This is a sponsored message. Such messages are sent very occasionally.
  Please feel free to delete.

Since I stopped doing main Menu, a lot of people have urged me to
produce downloadable tutorials. So in my weekends and evenings, I've
  been putting my first together.

One of the first issues I had to confront was how to secure the content.
I investigated a number of options, and eventually came to the
conclusion that all of them will disadvantage the people I want to help
most, those who struggle with computers. So I've come up with a concept
I am calling trustware. It's simple, the only thing stopping you from
sharing the tutorial with your friends, is trust. It takes a lot of
research, time and energy to put these tutorials together. I've tried to
keep the price low in order to keep the price within everyone's reach.
So if you like the tutorial, and you'd like to see more produced, please
support this effort by not passing it on, and by encouraging others to
buy. If I'm being naive and I only sell one or two copies, then
obviously this will be the only one I produce. So now the details of
  this first tutorial.

Jonathan Mosen's Get going with Google is a comprehensive two hour audio
tutorial unlocking the secrets of the world's most powerful search
  engine.

Have you ever wondered how to search for something on Google while
excluding certain common results? Did you know Google can be used as a
dictionary, a calculator and a means of converting everything from
currency to weight? Did you know Google can show you who is linking to
your blog or other web site?
Did you know Google has a thesaurus to help you get the most out of
searching? Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google unlocks the full
potential of Google, with the access technology user in mind.

Whether you use a screen reader, a portable device or a stand-alone
accessible browsing solution, Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google
puts you in control of the billions of pages on the world wide web.
References are made to JAWS and Window-eyes commands throughout the
tutorial, but instructions are also given so that it's easy to translate
them into whatever product you use.

Talking you step by step through every keystroke, you'll find just how
easy it is to become a Google master. Get exactly the search results you
want with Jonathan Mosen's Get Going with Google.

Spending two hours mastering Google will save you time and frustration
as you take control of getting exactly the results you want.

This well researched guide to unlocking Google's secrets normally sells
for $14.95. But as an introductory offer, Jonathan Mosen's Get Going
with Google can be yours for only $9.95. Pay with any major credit card
through pay Pal, and instantly download and listen to your copy of Get
  Going with Google in
MP3 format, suitable for playback on your PC or any portable device.

This really isn't that big of a deal you know. If there are going
   to
be spots, and it looks like there are, it'll probably only be 2 or
   3
minutes an hour tops, and that's definitely better than the amount
you get on commercial radio. These channels are expendable really,
because they're run by clear channel. if the commercials bother
   you
that much, simply find other xm channels to listen to that don't
run commercials.

God, I hope this isn't true.

From Digital Music News: XM Satellite Radio routinely touts it
commercial-free radio channels, giving it a major edge over
   terrestrial
   radio. Now, an

   xm satellite radio

interesting situation involving Clear Channel could force
   commercials
onto a number of XM stations.

Most recently, the company pointed to an upcoming change as part
   of a
10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. XM noted
   that
   'commercial

advertisements will resume on music programming currently provided
   to
   us
by Clear Channel,' part of a 'dispute we had with Clear Channel
   relating

   clear channel

to our respective rights and obligations' following a '1998
   investment
   in us.'

Clear Channel reportedly controls about four channels, a small
percentage of the 160-station XM dial. But consumers could become
   confused by the development,

especially if one of the Clear Channel-programmed stations happens
   to
   be
a favorite. Whether that poisons the well is speculative, though
   certainly XM

is unhappy about the programming change.

Meanwhile, the development could be an attempt by Clear Channel to
sabotage the commercial-free competitive advantage of XM, part of

   digital music news

an intensifying battle between terrestrial and satellite
   companies.

class action suit

2006-03-03 Thread Terese Ann Goren
Hello All,

This may be slightly off topic but if anyone has purchased a CD from
Sony lately you may want to read this. Have a great day

Terese

If You Bought, Received or Used a SONY BMG Music Entertainment CD
Containing Either XCP or Media Max Content Protection Software, Your
Rights May Be Affected By a Class Action Settlement, And You Should
Download Updates For That Software.

What is this about?

A settlement has been proposed in a lawsuit brought against SONY BMG
Music Entertainment, Inc., SunnComm International Inc., and First 4
Internet, Ltd. (Defendants). The lawsuit, In re SONY BMG CD
Technologies Litigation, Case No. 1:05-cv-09575-NRB, is pending in
the United States District Court for the Southern District of New
York and relates to XCP and MediaMax content protection software
installed on certain SONY BMG music CDs.

The Settlement resolves claims that the Defendants manufactured and
sold CDs containing XCP and MediaMax software without adequately
disclosing the limitations the software imposes on the use of the CDs
and the security vulnerabilities it creates. The Defendants have
denied that they did anything wrong.

Who Is Included, And What Does The Settlement Provide?

The settlement provides relief for persons who bought, received or
used SONY BMG CDs with either XCP or MediaMax software. Under the
settlement, any person in possession of an XCP CD can exchange it for
a replacement CD, an MP3 download of the same album, and either (a)
cash payment of $7.50 and one (1) free album download from a list of
200 albums, or (b) three (3) free album downloads from that list.
Purchasers of CDs containing MediaMax 5.0 software will receive a free
MP3 download of the same album and one (1) additional free album
download. Purchasers of CDs containing MediaMax 3.0 software will
receive a free MP3 download of the same album.

The settlement also requires the Defendants to stop manufacturing
SONY BMG CDs with XCP or MediaMax 3.0 and 5.0 software and, until
2008: (1) make available updates to fix all known security
vulnerabilities caused by XCP and MediaMax software; (2) provide
software programs to uninstall XCP and MediaMax software safely; (3)
fix any future security vulnerabilities discovered in MediaMax and
any other content protection software placed on SONY BMG CDs; (4)
provide independent verification that personal information about
users of SONY BMG CDs has not and will not be collected through XCP
or MediaMax; (5) waive certain provisions of the end user license
agreements for XCP and MediaMax software; and
(6) ensure that any other content protection software will be clearly
disclosed, independently tested and readily uninstalled.

At 9:15a.m. on May 22, 2006, the Court will hold a hearing at the
United States District Court, Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States
Courthouse, 500 Pearl Street, Courtroom 21A, New York, New York
10007-1312, to decide whether to approve the settlement and the class
attorneys' fees and costs.

How Do I Participate In The Settlement?
If you bought or received a SONY BMG Music CD containing XCP or
MediaMax software and want to receive the relief you may be eligible
for under the settlement, you must submit an online claim form at
www.sonybmgcdtechsettlement.com, or mail a claim form to:

SONY BMG CD Technologies Settlement
P.O. Box 1804, Faribault, MN 55021-1804

All claim forms must be submitted by December 31, 2006.

What Are My Other Options?

If you bought, received or used a SONY BMG Music CD containing XCP or
MediaMax software, and you do not want to be legally bound by the
settlement or receive a replacement CD, cash, free downloads or other
relief, you must exclude yourself by May 1, 2006. If you do not
exclude yourself, certain of your claims against the Defendants that
were or could have been asserted in the lawsuit will be released,
meaning you may not be able to sue the Defendants for those claims.
To view the detailed legal Notice of Proposed Class Action
Settlement, Motion for Attorneys' Fees and Settlement Fairness
Hearing and to download the software updates, visit
www.sonybmgcdtechsettlement.com.

administrator at the address above or by calling toll free 1-800-242-7610.
