Hi Mary, Android is fine when browsing through categories and I can even select episodes. As for iOS, I believe that is an iOS 8 bug, not a problem of Netflix. There are several apps where VO doesn't follow focus. I haven't tried it on Android recently, but with ios, there is this weird slide thing you have to do in order to get stuff on the screen so you can double tap what you want. Flicking and finding the title does not work, because focus does not follow as you flick through items that are actually off the screen. The regular voice over with ios way of scrolling doesn't work either. Last time I tried it on Android, browsing didn't work either for the same reason; you can't flick through to see all the stuff in a given category you're trying to browse. But as I say, I have not tried that in a long time, so perhaps they fixed it on Android? Various people on other lists I'm on have also reported issues with trying to find specific episodes within a season of a tv show. So when we say stuff is or isn't accessible, then maybe it will help to specify the actions that were taken or the part of the app that was used, so we're all on the same page. Mary

This netflix issue predates ios 8 by a long, long time. There is a podcast on applevis done by somebody who goes over the convoluted way you must deal with netflix category browsing if you can get the hang of it. Even with the vo bug in ios8, for those apps that had the flicking problem, it was still possible to use the standard VO gesture to get to the page you wanted and then find the link or button or whatever to double tap. That can't be done with netflix, so far as I am aware, unless you master the unorthodox, dare I say, nonstandard, method Netflix has chosen for its app. Mary

Hi, Worth noting that I don't believe with Version 8 you get the Izotope RX, the repair tools. These are great, especially the EQ exciter and stuff, so I enjoy Sound Forge Pro 11. RE: I'm new to this list, and I have some Sound Forge questions.
Hi Tina, If you do noise reduction and stuff like that, sometimes the vocals get squashed along with noise removal. Izotope has things like an EQ exciter preset called Vocal Detail which brings back the lost top end of some vocals. Works well on editing podcasts, where the original recording is hissy. Hi Steve, To add to this, Tina may well have scroll lock on, which affects cursor movement over the file. Who knows without looking. Tina, My experience with Sound Forge 11 has been primarily with Window-Eyes although I am somewhat familiar with JFW and I know a little about Jim SnowBarger's scripts. I have not had the problem you indicate and have not observed any differences in that regard between Sound Forge 10 and 11. Having said that, though, there are a huge number of options that can have all different kinds of effects. While I can't think of one that should just arbitrarily put you at the beginning of the file, I have had some options cause some strange things to happen. For example, I brought a file I created in Sound Forge 10 into Sound Forge 11, and none of the over 50 markers I had set worked. Wow, was I mad, Why didn't they keep compatibility, and on and on. I went back and finished in Sound Forge 10. I found out later by accident, that pressing the letter x changes the play mode. It causes markers to be ignored in favor of other parameters. I went back to that old Sound Forge 10 file, brought it into version 11, and what do you know, all of the markers worked flawlessly. I am not saying that some of what others have found is not true, because my use of Sound Forge is not as complex as some of the others here. However, if one is going to use a program like this successfully, it is worth learning as much about it as you can. I think getting version 10 now might be difficult, for one thing. Yet, if you are having good luck with Sound Forge 8, you might be best served to stick with it if it works with your hardware. The old version I was using did not work on 64-bit systems, as I recall, or it wasn't compatible with something in Windows 7, I don't remember any more, but I was forced to switch. You will probably be forced to switch from Sound Forge 8 to something newer at some point, too, but it might not happen for a while. If I were you, though, since you've spent the money, I'd investigate it a little more before giving up. You can probably have both versions on your computer so it might not have to be all of one or the other. I know I can have versions 10 and 11 both on my computer at once. You might also want to be sure you have the latest scripts or whether there is anything you have to do to make them work with version 11, but you've probably done that. Checking to see which cursor snapping options are in effect could make a difference as well. Others who are more into Sound Forge 11 may have other advice as well, and I may simply not have encountered what some have because I tend to be working with two track recordings. Good luck. On 6/29/2014 5:18 PM, Humberto Rodriguez wrote: Well Sunshine, I am not sure I understand what you wrote, but it seems to me that you did what I said and it worked, then you did it again with larger text and it worked again, but then for some reason something else did not work when you tried to convert text to MP3. There are always many possibilities for something to throw a wrench into the works when you are dealing with computers. You must be patient and eliminate possibilities one by one. If you are able to convert small files to MP3 but not larger ones, try using a lower bit rate. Keep in mind that bit and sampler rates go together, for example, you cannot save something at 56K bit and 44100 sampler rates. Above all, if we are to try to help you, you must take care of being very explicit when asking questions, about the detailed steps you have taken, as well as the result and error messages. The first is to get a noise profile, and the second is to use that for noise removal. Step one - get noise profile. 1. Select a small section of audio where there's only background noise. To do this first make sure the track is selected (pressing enter toggles whether the track is selected). Then select a time range which contains only background noise. One way of doing this is to press spacebar to start playback, press left bracket (next to letter p) where you want the start of the time range, press right bracket where you want the end of the time range, and press spacebar to stop. If you now press spacebar, this will playback only the time range, and so you can check that you've got just background noise. 2. On the effects menu, choose noise removal, and the dialog opens. 3. press the get noise profile button. The dialog closes. Step two - use the profile for noise removal. 1. Select all the audio. You can do this by pressing ctrl+a. 2. On the effects menu, choose noise removal, and the dialog opens. 3. There are a number of settings for noise removal in the dialog, but to accept the defaults, just tab to the ok button and press it. There is more info on noise removal on this page from the manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/noise_removal.html And there's more info for users of screen readers in this guide: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.0.5-Guide.html David. original message: Hi everybody, I'm attempting to use Audacity to remove background noise from a sound file. I wrote to them through their support link on their home page at www.burnaware.com and I'd suggest anyone else concerned about this issue write to them as well. RE: re soundforge
Hi Steve, I am using SF 11 Pro on a 64-bit system without issue. As for Izotope, some of the repair stuff works and some doesn't. I use EQ and Exciter mostly, so I can get vocal detail out of bad recordings. I also use a stand alone program called Groove Mechanic, which is primarily designed for cleaning up vinyl and tape, but the noise reduction and gating is fantastic. If you have a file with noise on it, then do send it to me, and I will process it with GM just to show you how good it is. GM is about 30 bucks if I remember right but is completely accessible. GM is designed to get rid of all kinds of hiss and it does it without question. Crackles too. Anything like that is fair game, even 60hz hum. Hope this helps. I also have not really found anything in Sound Forge 11 that makes it less usable than Sound Forge 8, although some things I hoped would have been improved were not. I also was thinking that Sound Forge 8 might not work on 64-bit systems, but I am not sure of that. Hi, Several. You could get the Olympus DM-670 which is smaller, or you could get the excellent LS-14, which is bigger but has some of the best internal mics I've heard on an Olympus other than the LS-100. RE: Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter
Hi, I disagree. M4A sounds better than MP3 at the equivalent bit rate. So a 128KB M4A sounds more like a 192 MP3. MP3 is the worst kind of compression out there. Mp3 should play just as well and you're certainly not gaining anything in audio quality doing this as you're converting from 1 lossee format to another thus losing quality in the conversion anyway. If it helps I use the Switch Audio File Converter. On 2 Feb 2014, at 10:15 am, Evan Reese ment...@dslextreme.com wrote: Hello, I've been using the Freemake Audio Converter since March of 2012 with good results. However lately, it's been having trouble opening multiple files, and the conversions it makes play in Winamp just fine, but they cause my Book Sense fits. I have to remove the battery to get it to speak correctly after trying to play one of these. I've converted several hundred CDs with it and those play in my Book Sense just fine, but the most recent dozen albums or so are having this trouble. Well, I tried an uninstall and reinstall, but that did not go well because apparently it didn't really uninstall, because when I tried a conversion after reinstalling it, it remembered the last album I did, and it also remembered where I told it to store the converted files, which is not where it stores them if you don't change it. And, needless to say, the files I converted after a reinstall aren't any better. So I think I'm gonna have to switch to another converter. I found some on Google that say they convert mp3 to m4a, but I don't know how accessible they are. So that's what I'm hoping someone here can help me with. I'd appreciate any advice. This Freemake Audio Converter is accessible, and a cinch to run, and I did thousands of files with it, but apparently I've got to get something else. Thanks much for any suggestions. I'm baffled as to what's happening. I've got a laptop running the latest version of Audacity along with Jaws 14. I'm also using a USB Blue Yeti microphone which I plug headphones into. I've got JAWS going through the microphone, checked through the sound card menu with JAWS utilities. I've also checked the Blue Yeti mic in the input and output devices in Audacity. The issue I have is when I import a track into Audacity and hit play JAWS vanishes. The track plays, but JAWS goes silent. If I unplug the mic and put it straight back in again then JAWS is back through the headphones. There's obviously an issue with the playback options, but I'm honestly at a loss what it might be. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Hi, Go to the soundcard's properties. On the Communications Tab, set it to Do Nothing. Also go to the effects tab if there is one and disable all enhancements. That hasn't worked. There's no effects tab either. Strange thing I've noticed now as well is that JAWS only knocks off after a number of seconds. If I hit play within Audacity and only let it go for about four seconds it's fine. Any longer and it goes. The simple workaround is to unplug the USB mic all the time, but this is annoying and will wear down the USB hub connector eventually. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Steve Nutt Sent: 21 January 2014 10:13 To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Issue with soundcards and playback using Audacity Hi, Go to the soundcard's properties. Any recommendations for sound restoration tools for Windows?
Hi all, I currently use Sound Forge Pro 11 and the free Izotope mastering tools that come with it. I noticed that Izotope have RX3 Advanced which is an advanced sound restoration system for denoising and such. It looks really good, particularly dialog denoiser, which removes hiss and other noises and brings out speech vocals, good for podcasting and stuff. RX is quite expensive, so I downloaded the demo. It looks to be QT based so Window-Eyes will hardly read it at all, or at least any processing tasks. NVDA will kind of read it, but won't read all slider positions and indeed won't move the sliders with the arrow keys. So my question is, does anyone use anything that is screen reader accessible for advanced audio restoration? Thanks for any help.
