Hi,

Try renaming them and putting a number at the beginning, such as 01-Chapter
1.mp3, 02-Chapter 2.mp3, etc.

Or try creating a .m3u playlist in the book's folder.

I know how to get hold of royalty-free music for magazines, podcasts

Do I like what better, are you referring to Total Recorder?

If so I like both Total Recorder and Goldwave, both have excellent sound
editors.

I’m on the record as having said that if a person bought both Total Recorder
and Goldwave then they would have pretty much all the audio production and
editing tools required in their basket.

I’m not denying there’s a place for Sound Forge 11 Pro but not for the typical
user of audio, that’s just overkill and even worse, - it seems still - a lot of
Sound Forge isn’t accessible and probably will never be.

Another audio tool that is often overlooked though well respected by list
members - including yours truly - is Sound Recording Studio, I think I got the
name right, the one marketed by American Printing House For The Blind.

I’ve not played with Sound Forge Pro for a very long time, Audio Studio does
me so I’m wondering just how many of the “Visual” features in Sound Forge

If you want to know what my favourite audio package is - for recording,

Attention! Do NOT send a test message to the list or you will not be

Guidelines.

PC-audio is a list for the discussion of any PC audio related topic
such as PC audio software like sound editors, audio players and audio
formats; and hardware like sound cards, CD and DVD devices and so on.

While the subject matter is wide ranging, this is not a forum for the
discussion of non-pc-audio matters. There are many other lists for
political or other discussions.

There are also some PC audio related topics which are specifically
excluded from the allowable topics. The explicitly prohibited topics
include:

* requests for songs or other audio files * promotion of audio streams
except for occasional announcements of special events * advertising
audio products and service Willfully posting an off-topic message is
strictly prohibited. While it may be considered that one or two
messages that are off topic can't hurt, if everyone on a large list
like this took that approach, we would quickly descend into chaos.
Asking for replies to be sent privately makes no difference.

Some examples of off-topic messages include:

* Virus alerts * Jokes and humor * Advertising items for sale * Test
messages * Non-audio software and hardware

Vulgar language, name calling and other types of flames are strictly
prohibited.

Sometimes a message thread starts with a clearly defined purpose, but
as the discussion develops the subject matter can change. If this
happens, you should take the initiative and change the subject line to
better reflect the subject matter of the thread.

Some people pay by time or volume when they use the Internet. For this
reason, please take care when quoting messages that you're replying
to.

Ideally, keep just enough of the previous message to remind
subscribers about the message to which you're replying, and no more.
Otherwise, one quickly finds a few lines of new text at the beginning
of a message followed by screen after screen of old messages.

If you believe that any of these rules are not being followed, do not
raise this as an issue on the list. Write to the group owner at
pc-audio-ow...@pc-audio.org and express your concern. If you raise
these matters on the group itself, it will generate considerable
off-topic traffic and bad feeling. There is only one moderator. Please
do not post messages asking that a thread stop or accusing someone on
the list of being off topic.

The moderator of the list has the right to remove or restrict anyone
from being able to post to the group as a result of not adhering to
the stated rules.

Steve,
Did you browse categories on ios or did you just search for something
using the edit box? I haven't tried it on Android recently, but with
ios, there is this weird slide thing you have to do in order to get
stuff on the screen so you can double tap what you want. Flicking and
finding the title does not work, because focus does not follow as you
flick through items that are actually off the screen. The regular voice
over with ios way of scrolling doesn't work either. Last time I tried
it on Android, browsing didn't work either for the same reason; you
can't flick through to see all the stuff in a given category you're
trying to browse. But as I say, I have not tried that in a long time,
so perhaps they fixed it on Android?

Various people on other lists I'm on have also reported issues with
trying to find specific episodes within a season of a tv show. So when
we say stuff is or isn't accessible, then maybe it will help to specify
the actions that were taken or the part of the app that was used, so
we're all on the same page.
Mary

Hi Steve,
Nope, Apple have fixed the VO focus problem. This netflix issue
predates ios 8 by a long, long time. There is a podcast on applevis
done by somebody who goes over the convoluted way you must deal with
netflix category browsing if you can get the hang of it. Even with the
vo bug in ios8, for those apps that had the flicking problem, it was
still possible to use the standard VO gesture to get to the page you
wanted and then find the link or button or whatever to double tap. That
can't be done with netflix, so far as I am aware, unless you master the
unorthodox, dare I say, nonstandard, method Netflix has chosen for its
app.

Yeah, Window-Eyes 9.0 Beta 1 is pretty good, almost stable in fact, of
course there are bugs like the inability to delete messages in
Thunderbird which is Window-Eyes specific because I can do this with
Nvda, however this is one of the best betas I have used and that says a

All of this stuff is so crazy. I used Jaws 14 tonight instead of Jaws 15

little better, but I still had to keep bringing it back to the spot that I

Hi Tina,

If you do noise reduction and stuff like that, sometimes the vocals get
squashed along with noise removal. Izotope has things like an EQ exciter
preset called Vocal Detail which brings back the lost top end of some
vocals. Works well on editing podcasts, where the original recording is
hissy.

Tina,

My experience with Sound Forge 11 has been primarily with Window-Eyes
although I am somewhat familiar with JFW and I know a little about Jim
SnowBarger's scripts. I have not had the problem you indicate and have not
observed any differences in that regard between Sound Forge 10 and 11.
Having said that, though, there are a huge number of options that can have
all different kinds of effects. While I can't think of one that should just
arbitrarily
put you at the beginning of the file, I have had some options cause some
strange things to happen. For example, I brought a file I created in Sound
Forge
10 into Sound Forge 11, and none of the over 50 markers I had set worked.
Wow, was I mad, Why didn't they keep compatibility, and on and on. I went
back and finished in Sound Forge 10. I found out later by accident, that
pressing the letter x changes the play mode. It causes markers to be
ignored in
favor of other parameters. I went back to that old Sound Forge 10 file,
brought it into version 11, and what do you know, all of the markers worked
flawlessly.

I am not saying that some of what others have found is not true, because my
use of Sound Forge is not as complex as some of the others here. However,
if
one is going to use a program like this successfully, it is worth learning
as much about it as you can. I think getting version 10 now might be
difficult, for one
thing. Yet, if you are having good luck with Sound Forge 8, you might be
best served to stick with it if it works with your hardware. The old
version I was
using did not work on 64-bit systems, as I recall, or it wasn't compatible
with something in Windows 7, I don't remember any more, but I was forced to
switch.
You will probably be forced to switch from Sound Forge 8 to something newer
at some point, too, but it might not happen for a while. If I were you,
though,
since you've spent the money, I'd investigate it a little more before giving
up. You can probably have both versions on your computer so it might not
have to
be all of one or the other. I know I can have versions 10 and 11 both on my
computer at once. You might also want to be sure you have the latest
scripts
or whether there is anything you have to do to make them work with version
11, but you've probably done that. Checking to see which cursor snapping
options are in effect could make a difference as well. Others who are more
into Sound Forge 11 may have other advice as well, and I may simply not have

encountered what some have because I tend to be working with two track
recordings. Good luck.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

There are always many possibilities for something to throw a wrench into

eliminate possibilities one by one. If you are able to convert small

bit and sampler rates go together, for example, you cannot save something

And then when saving a file, type:

 C:\tts\filename.mp3

That is what I do and it works fine. Of course, you must have

No, what i said was this.
1 i converted a small file to mp3, that worked. using the method you
 specified.
2 then i tried to set up a larger file to convert to mp3. did the same
steps as you outlined for the first one. when done there was no mp3 in
the folder i had placed in the path.
so while the smaller file converted just fine, the larger one did not
 convert at all.
would you like the file so you can try it?

There are always many possibilities for something to throw a wrench into

eliminate possibilities one by one. If you are able to convert small
 files
to MP3 but not larger ones, try using a lower bit rate. Keep in mind that
bit and sampler rates go together, for example, you cannot save something
 at
56K bit and 44100 sampler rates.

Above all, if we are to try to help you, you must take care of being very

 Try doing this:

When it asks you the file name to save, give it a full path, for

 C:\filename.mp3

Or better yet, create a folder inside c:\ for the files, for example:

 C:\tts

And then when saving a file, type:

 C:\tts\filename.mp3

That is what I do and it works fine. Of course, you must have
 previously
selected to save in MP3, the bit rate and sampling.

 Hello Sunshine:

 Try doing this:

When it asks you the file name to save, give it a full path, for example:

 C:\filename.mp3

Or better yet, create a folder inside c:\ for the files, for example:

 C:\tts

And then when saving a file, type:

 C:\tts\filename.mp3

That is what I do and it works fine. Of course, you must have previously
selected to save in MP3, the bit rate and sampling.

 Humberto

It has all the same features I reckon. What's missing in Balabolka?

RE: noise reduction with Audacity

2014-06-16 Thread Steve Nutt
Hi David,

As a slightly quicker way, once you have your noise profile and the dialog is
closed, just press Control-R to Repeat Last Effect. This will bring up the
Noise Removal dialog for the second process.

Hi Dave,
the noise removal effect in audacity involves two steps. The first is to get a
noise profile, and the second is to use that for noise removal.
Step one - get noise profile.
1. Select a small section of audio where there's only background noise. To do
this first make sure the track is selected (pressing enter toggles whether the
track is selected). Then select a time range which contains only background
noise. One way of doing this is to press spacebar to start playback, press left
bracket (next to letter p) where you want the start of the time range, press
right bracket where you want the end of the time range, and press spacebar to
stop. If you now press spacebar, this will playback only the time range, and so
you can check that you've got just background noise.
2. On the effects menu, choose noise removal, and the dialog opens.
3. press the get noise profile button. The dialog closes.

Step two - use the profile for noise removal.
1. Select all the audio. You can do this by pressing ctrl+a.
2. On the effects menu, choose noise removal, and the dialog opens.
3. There are a number of settings for noise removal in the dialog, but to
accept the defaults, just tab to the ok button and press it.

There is more info on noise removal on this page from the manual:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/noise_removal.html
And there's more info for users of screen readers in this guide:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.0.5-Guide.html

David.

they have a new interface that looks visually appealing but it is no
longer possible to navigate the menus using the keyboard. I'm using the

For those who don't know BurnAware is a CD burning program for Windows

RE: re soundforge

2014-04-02 Thread Steve Nutt
Hi Steve,

I am using SF 11 Pro on a 64-bit system without issue.

As for Izotope, some of the repair stuff works and some doesn't. I use EQ
and Exciter mostly, so I can get vocal detail out of bad recordings.

I also use a stand alone program called Groove Mechanic, which is primarily
designed for cleaning up vinyl and tape, but the noise reduction and gating
is fantastic. If you have a file with noise on it, then do send it to me,
and I will process it with GM just to show you how good it is. GM is about
30 bucks if I remember right but is completely accessible. GM is designed
to get rid of all kinds of hiss and it does it without question. Crackles
too. Anything like that is fair game, even 60hz hum.

Hope this helps.

Steve,

I am using Sound Forge 11 and since we are both on the Window-Eyes list, I
am assuming you also use Window-Eyes.
I had thought I ran in to some accessibility issues with some of the Izotope
stuff, but perhaps I gave up too
soon. Are there any tricks in using the Repair kit? I also have not really
found anything in Sound Forge 11 that
makes it less usable than Sound Forge 8, although some things I hoped would
have been improved were not. I also
was thinking that Sound Forge 8 might not work on 64-bit systems, but I am
not sure of that.

Hi,

Several. You could get the Olympus DM-670 which is smaller, or you could
get the excellent LS-14, which is bigger but has some of the best internal
mics I've heard on an Olympus other than the LS-100.

Or the Zooms, the H2N for example. Advantage with Olympus is you get speech
for some of the functions.

Hi,

I disagree. M4A sounds better than MP3 at the equivalent bit rate. So a

Dumb question I'm sure but why do you want to convert from MP3 to M4A or
AAC? Mp3 should play just as well and you're certainly not gaining anything
in audio quality doing this as you're converting from 1 lossee format to
another thus losing quality in the conversion anyway.

If it helps I use the Switch Audio File Converter.

On 2 Feb 2014, at 10:15 am, Evan Reese ment...@dslextreme.com wrote:

 Hello,
I've been using the Freemake Audio Converter since March of 2012 with good
results. However lately, it's been having trouble opening multiple files,
and the conversions it makes play in Winamp just fine, but they cause my
Book Sense fits. I have to remove the battery to get it to speak correctly
after trying to play one of these. I've converted several hundred CDs with
it and those play in my Book Sense just fine, but the most recent dozen
albums or so are having this trouble.

Well, I tried an uninstall and reinstall, but that did not go well because
apparently it didn't really uninstall, because when I tried a conversion
after reinstalling it, it remembered the last album I did, and it also
remembered where I told it to store the converted files, which is not where
it stores them if you don't change it. And, needless to say, the files I
converted after a reinstall aren't any better.

So I think I'm gonna have to switch to another converter. I found some on
Google that say they convert mp3 to m4a, but I don't know how accessible
they are. So that's what I'm hoping someone here can help me with.

I'd appreciate any advice. This Freemake Audio Converter is accessible,
and a cinch to run, and I did thousands of files with it, but apparently
I've got to get something else.

 Thanks much for any suggestions.

Hi there

Hoping someone can help. I'm baffled as to what's happening.

I've got a laptop running the latest version of Audacity along with Jaws 14.
I'm also using a USB Blue Yeti microphone which I plug headphones into.
I've got JAWS going through the microphone, checked through the sound card
menu with JAWS utilities. I've also checked the Blue Yeti mic in the input
and output devices in Audacity. The issue I have is when I import a track
into Audacity and hit play JAWS vanishes. The track plays, but JAWS goes
silent. If I unplug the mic and put it straight back in again then JAWS is
back through the headphones. There's obviously an issue with the playback
options, but I'm honestly at a loss what it might be. Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks

RE: Issue with soundcards and playback using Audacity

2014-01-21 Thread Steve Nutt
Hi,

Go to the soundcard's properties. On the Communications Tab, set it to Do
Nothing.

Also go to the effects tab if there is one and disable all enhancements.

All the best

Hi there

Hoping someone can help. I'm baffled as to what's happening.

I've got a laptop running the latest version of Audacity along with Jaws 14.
I'm also using a USB Blue Yeti microphone which I plug headphones into.
I've got JAWS going through the microphone, checked through the sound card

Nope. That hasn't worked. There's no effects tab either. Strange thing I've
noticed now as well is that JAWS only knocks off after a number of seconds. If
I hit play within Audacity and only let it go for about four seconds it's fine.
Any longer and it goes. The simple workaround is to unplug the USB mic all
the time, but this is annoying and will wear down the USB hub connector
eventually.

  HI guys
Is it only me, or when you guys Alt+tab away from Goldwave and want to
get back, you land on some kind of Play Control instead of on the file
you want to continue recording or working on? Ihave to, in order to get
back to the file, do Insert+f10 and once on the Running Aplications, do
G several times until I get to Goldwave's file. Any other way around?
Thanks for info! OH and by the way using Windows7 if it makes any
difference.

Any recommendations for sound restoration tools for Windows?

2014-01-13 Thread Steve Nutt
Hi all,

I currently use Sound Forge Pro 11 and the free Izotope mastering tools that
come with it.

I noticed that Izotope have RX3 Advanced which is an advanced sound
restoration system for denoising and such. It looks really good,
particularly dialog denoiser, which removes hiss and other noises and brings
out speech vocals, good for podcasting and stuff.

RX is quite expensive, so I downloaded the demo. It looks to be QT based so
Window-Eyes will hardly read it at all, or at least any processing tasks.

NVDA will kind of read it, but won't read all slider positions and indeed
won't move the sliders with the arrow keys.

So my question is, does anyone use anything that is screen reader accessible
for advanced audio restoration?

Thanks for any help.

All the best

Steve
