Re: Apple Releases New Ipod

2009-03-23 Thread Steve Matzura
My guess is that it's a scaled-down version of the 16-gigabyte Nano
from last year.

On Wed, 11 Mar 2009 16:01:19 -0500, you wrote:

It sounds like a nice little player. It wasn't made clear in the article
how the text -to-speech is implemented though, whether it is built-in or
transferred.

I also followed the link to the press release and found a link to some
interesting facts about lithium-polymer batteries, charging cycles, running
time and lifespan.

Re: Apple Releases New Ipod

2009-03-14 Thread Ray
Thanks so much Christopher, needn't worry I'm going yampy!

I always look forward to your posts here.

Haven't much time to add to what you've already said about Apple, but for me
at least it is a very mixed message I get when it comes to accessability
from them. It would be unfair to single out Apple in this field, after all
there are so many who don't come up to scratch on this issue, but the
Quicktime Player seems an example of, shall we say, 'blindess' when it comes
to our needs!

This from someone who might buy an IMac in the future - and commit the
herresy of putting Windows on it as well! So before anyone starts on a rant
about anti-Apple stances and my ignorance, you'd better think before you
write!

Still, though, even if speach isn't built in, and even if you have to use ms
sam, your still getting speech - which is quite a revolution. And unless my
ipod video's hard drive fails, it will be lasting a long time to come- the
only thing I might even replace would be the battery.

I really want an 80 gb ipod video, though.

Yeah, but the fact that an actual popular company is doing this, without us
having to instal alternate firmware - that's a step in the right direction.
Might not be a revolution, but it sure beats what most companies are doing,
and we don't have to use rockbox if we don't want to - but I like
rockbox..lol.

Well, I agree it's a good development, but I wouldn't say what Apple is
doing is revolutionary. Remember Rock box has used this technology for
years. I installed rockbox on my first portable media player in 2007 and
using talking clips to speak the menus, folders and file names wasn't new
then. Right now I have Rockbox running on a 30G iRiver, and I'm using
Samantha or Jill for my voice. It's one of those voices that came with JFW
8. Again, don't get me wrong, this is a great development, and I encourage
Apple to continue down this path, but their claims of the first talking
portable media player are distorted and the technology they're using isn't
revolutionary.

Re: Apple Releases New Ipod

2009-03-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, I agree it's a good development, but I wouldn't say what Apple is
doing is revolutionary. Remember Rock box has used this technology for
years. I installed rockbox on my first portable media player in 2007 and
using talking clips to speak the menus, folders and file names wasn't
new then. Right now I have Rockbox running on a 30G iRiver, and I'm
using Samantha or Jill for my voice. It's one of those voices that came
with JFW 8. Again, don't get me wrong, this is a great development, and
I encourage Apple to continue down this path, but their claims of the
first talking portable media player are distorted and the technology
they're using isn't revolutionary.

Constantine wrote:
Still, though, even if speach isn't built in, and even if you have to
use ms sam, your still getting speech - which is quite a revolution.
And unless my ipod video's hard drive fails, it will be lasting a long
time to come- the only thing I might even replace would be the battery.

I really want an 80 gb ipod video, though.

I couldn't find the story at that URL either, so I used Google and
found the following URL
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/features.html. Following the link
labeled Learn more about VoiceOver also lead to information on how
this works, which BTW, seems to be the same way it works on the iPod
Nano.

after seeing the accessability light, still get some things woefully
wrong!

themselves, I've seen this sort of arrangement with minidisc walkmans

Re: Apple Releases New Ipod

2009-03-12 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, from reading http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/voiceover.html, it
sounds like this works the same as the iPod Nano , so there isn't a TTS
running on the Shuffle. The TTS is run on your PC and then iTunes copies
audio clips over to the Shuffle. Since it's the same technology used on
the Nano, you wonder how they can claim VoiceOver is the exciting new
feature that makes iPod shuffle the first music player that talks to
you. Don't forget, Rockbox has also been using this same technique for
years.

Although Apple's work on making their products accessible should be
praised and encouraged, I'm not smitten with them yet. One wonders why
it took Apple so long to add speech to their iPod's, why the whole line
doesn't have this feature and why they didn't include accessibility in
the iPhone from the get go.

Ok, well I've just checked this out and Apple will supply an adapter
for those who wish to use other headphones as they should, best get
some facts in before the nasty pasty's try to spread a few false
rumours around smile.

Yeah, not exactly a big selling point. What if you lose them. I bet
it costs like 30 bucks just to replace those - sort of like

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, I got the picture that most of the
controls are on the ear buds that come with this device. If so,
that's a show stopper right there and right now, especially for
some of us who can't wear ear buds or prefer the old fashioned
type head sets.
