Sangean HDR16 Portable HD Radio

2016-12-21 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hi!

I've spoken to a friend of mine who now has one of these radios and can
provide the following information and I hope to be able to link to a
review of the radio shortly.

The Sangean HDR16 is - as far as we know - the only portable HD radio
set available in the US and - by all accounts - its a true bargain to be
had for under $100.

there are many things I like about the company Sangean, one of which is
their desire to use standard type cabinets across the range of radios
they sell. This means that - if you've ever seen a Sangean PDR15 or
DPR26 - then you'll know exactly what the HDR16 portable HD radio looks
like as they all use the same cabinet.

The HDR16 is a stereo receiver with 2 2.5 ench speakers either side of
the control panel - quite a standard layout for a Sangean portable one
could say -.

Don't let the size of the speakers put you off, they sound remarkably good.

On the left hand side of the unit is a range of connections which
include headphones, line-in and line-out.

The HDR16 has both FM and AM HD bands.

I'm told that when you tune to an AM broadcast the HD locks in
automatically so you've no idea what the standard analogue AM signal
sounds like if that station is broadcasting in HD, the set just locks on
and that's it.

The tuning is incredibly selective - scan 10KHZ either side of the
station and you've no idea the station is there -, nice filtering.

If you tune to a standard AM signal the set sounds reasonable, no band
width filter unfortunately.

The HDR16 is incredibly senstive on the AM band but no surprises there
as most Sangean radio sets these days are.

HD on the FM band is superb apparently though there's another qwirk with
the radio that one has to get used to.

When you tune to HD FM broadcast the radio plays the standard FM
broadcast signal for around 5 seconds before locking onto the HD signal.

When the radio has locked on the jog dial can be used to select the
extra HD stations pertaining to the main FM broadcast.

The FM band's sensitivity and selectivity is very good but again, no
surprises there as its a Sangean set after all.

So that's all I know thus far and I envy Tom who has this radio ,
I could get one too but unfortuantley it wouldn't be too useful in
Australia though at least the radio has sensitive AM and FM even though
I wouldn't be able to make full use of the HD portion.

HD Radio

2016-08-03 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hi Folks!

I know the majority of list members reside in the United States thus the
fact that Sangean have released 3 new HD AM/FM models may be of
considerable interest.

I've been reading reviews and feedback on these radios for most of the
morning and it would appear that Sangean has not disappointed anyone
when it comes to performance and audio quality.

There are 3 models which were released last month and they are a wooden
cabinet tabletop, a small battery portable and a Hi Fi tuner type.

The Tabletop radio sells for well under $200 and for that you get a full
featured acoustically tuned wooden box.

I'll send reviews along to the list later on today.

fwd: Talking Digital AM / FM HD Radio

A little birdie has allowed us to release the following information:

The new talking HD FM radio we've hinted about is due to be introduced
officially to the market during the C.E.S. (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las
Vegas January 8th. The radio has a form factor nearly identical to that of
the Narrator. The features are also similar with some enhancements. The
radio will be manufactured and sold by Audio Vox. For the general public,
the radio will sell for $149, however, those with vision impairments will be
allowed to use a special coupon code which will reduce the price to $99. The
radio will be initially available from the Audio Vox web site
http://www.audiovox.com. I'm sure Sun Sounds will be selling them also. The
radio is a stereo AM/ FM HD radio with tactile buttons, a large print
display, snooze / alarm / clock, presets, scan up and down, manual tuning,
Auxiliary input, headphone jack. The radio announces the buttons pushed, as
well as the results of a button push. For instance, it announces the name
and frequency of stations as you tune. Or, it announces when you switch from
FM to AM to Auxiliary.

Help needed with Best Buy HD radio

2013-09-27 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I apologize for asking this question here, but I completely struck out
on Blind tech.

I bought the now discontinued HD radio from Best Buy. This set is
nothing to get excited about but does have a few nice features. I cannot
seem to locate the accessible instructions for operating this radio, and
I cannot recall how to save a station in the presets. I can delete a
preset but can't save one. Please if anyone on list has this thing and
knows the answer, please tell me how to save a preset. Additionally, if
someone can point me to an accessible set of instructions I would be
most grateful.

Thanks for any assistance.

Don,

Hold down the PRESET button that you are not using to delete. As I recall, the
DOWN button deletes and the UP button stores.
Remember, though, that presets are accessed in the order of their frequency and
not the order in which you enter them which I
think is poor.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

You would be better off getting an entry level HD radio instead of buying
the Dice unit. See if Best Buy still have any of the Narrator radios for
sale.

Frankly there isn't much to offer in the home market for HD radio unless you
buy a stereo receiver with HD built in.

Hello, Just wanted to update everyone on my experiences with this radio.
I have a replacement unit with Dice sent out right away and this one works fine.
Bottom line on the radio: it's a decent radio for an HD radio, not one you can
use for distance reception but ok for its purpose and all functions talk which
makes it worthwhile.

I'm thinking it might be defective since the one in the demo seemed to work
fine on AM. I think it could use some improvements but it ought to at least
work correctly as a radio! Will let you all know how things go. Hopefully
they're a reasonable company to deal with.

Fwd: On Innovations this Week: Talking HD Radio, Yamaha Effects Box, Dos Vox and the Tyros 3 Keyboard

2010-07-04 Thread Steve Pattison
 From:Chrissie Cochrane chris...@theglobalvoice.info
 To: innovati...@theglobalvoice.info

On this week's Innovations, first aired at 17:00 UTC, that's 1 pm Eastern,
10 am Pacific in the US, 6 pm in the UK and 7 pm in Central Europe on
Tuesday, we have four items for you.

Firstly we look at a new talking HD radio that's come out in the States,
from Dice Electronics: the Vision Free (available from
www.diceelectronics.com.) Steve Bauer talks to Chris Cooke from Dice
Electronics about this new radio and discusses plans that Dice Electronics
have for the future.

I then look at a piece of 20 year-old technology which I still use every day
in the making of sound recordings, both my own music and promos for the
station - the Yamaha SPX 90 effects box.

Following that Shawn Klein gives us part 2 of the history of Dos Vox, and we
end the program with another in the series looking at the Tyros 3
instrumentation; this time it's choirs.

That's all on Innovations airing at 17:00 UTC on Tuesday 6 July on the one
and only Global Voice, the most interactive station on the internet.

Hi Gang,

I got the message below from the blind hams list. As this has to do with an
accessible broadcast HD radio I thought I'd post it here.

Dave

Several months ago, someone on this list asked about an accessible HD
Radio.

I replied that such a unit was on the horizon, but that I could not
disclose what I knew about it at the time. That was because I was part
of a volunteer advisory team from the International Association of
Audio Information Services, IAAIS, the organization of radio reading
service professionals, which was working with Dice Electronics toward
the release of this receiver.

Below is information about the iTR-100A Vision Free HD Radio from the
Dice Electronics Website:

This unit began shipping last week, but I strongly suspect quantities
are limited.

Important Notes:

1. The accessible model is the iTR-100A.

2. The receiver also works for AM HD, although the information below
doesn't mention that fact.

3. The radio reading service feature referenced below is *not the 67
or 92 KHZ analogue FM sub-carrier. It is a new digital authorization
scheme to instruct an HD receiver to receive a digital Radio Reading
Service signal. All I can say about this feature is that it will be
tested in selected radio reading service stations soon.

You will find the information which appears below my signature, along
with accessible downloadable documentation, and ordering information
for the radio in the iTR-100A link near the top of the Dice
Electronics website.

Mike Duke, K5XU, Director,
Radio Reading Service of Mississippi

Based on the popular DICE iTR-100 tabletop HD Radio(tm), this unit was
designed with special consideration for the visually impaired.
Practical voice prompts
and audible feedback have been added which makes operating the
iTR-100A simple and intuitive.

Each button press is followed by an audio queue to help guide the user
through actions such as station browsing or setting up the alarm
clock. All buttons
and knobs are arranged and spaced apart with ease of use in mind. The
compact size of the unit makes it easy to enjoy the enhanced
noise-free sound quality
of HD Radio or RRS (Radio Reading Service) at home or in your office.

iTR-100A Vision Free HD Radio Features

Audio Feedback: Voice announcements are made to guide the user through
each button press. Radio station information, time and settings are
all assisted
by vocal queues.

RRS Capable: Register the radio's serial number with a local Radio
Reading Service provider to access the RRS content.

Alarm Clock: Announces the current time on wake and begins to play
preset radio station.

Access to Multicast Channels: Access more content with HD Radio's
Multicast channels. These are HD2 and HD3 channels found on HD Radio
frequencies.

I wouldn't waist my money on HD radio at this time, as HD radio is still in
the experimental stages of its development. There are still a number of
technical issues that have to be ironed out. In Canada, for an example HD
licences for broadcasters are issued conditionally on an experimental basis
only. If I had my druthers I would purchase a satellite radio before going
HD. When was the last time that you heard an ad on television saying that

Hi John,
I agree - a good analogy - similar to the HDMI mess, which seems to be settling
down with HDMI 1.3 for now. However, Onkyo has a component HD radio tuner that
also has satellite connectivity as well as Internet radio. The interface is
'future proof' with RS-232 connection for upgradability when newer features or

If by boat anchors you mean your analog televisions, you don't have to
 put
them out to pastor. There will be digital to analog convertors available
for roughly $50 per and the government will offer vouchers available

valued at $40. so, consumers who want to use analog televisions can do
 so.
In addition, if you already have cable or satellite, you're already set,

 High Bob,
I happen to agree with you.
A little more then 22 years ago, I bought a portable stereo that was
 AM
 stereo able.
Down here in Lake City Florida, none of the stations were transmitting
 AM
 stereo signals.
But when I left Florida and went to Georgia, this is when I was able

 pick
up AM stereo stations on that unit.
That thing cost me a little more then $450.
After going through that, I said to myself, never again will I do
 that.
I've got nothing against HD radio, I just don't thank it's ready for
 prime

If I end up with an HD radio, it would be because someone gave it to

But in the mean while, I will stick with what I have.

With a couple of exceptions, it's pretty much all music, no commercials

I wouldn't be surprised if you find that XM is the superior product. I got

It's just regular commercial radio with a few more stations thrown

I don't know how much Radio Shack is charging, but it's likely to be
in
the
range of $200-$250. I should be clearer about the radio's
 limitations,
 based
on the model I bought about two years ago. It's terrible on AM, so
 you'd
 buy
it only for FM. Also, there are five-second delays any time you
 switch
 to an
HD broadcaster, as I believe is standard with HD. However, I also
 find
 the
radio doesn't come up right away when I turn it on, and very
 occasionally
won't come up at all until I unplug the AC adaptor and reconnect it
 to
 the
outlet. I have another radio right next to it for the times I want
 immediate
reception, such as a news broadcast at the top of the hour. But for
 me,
 the
pure clarity of the Boston Acoustics HD's musical sound outweighs its
 eccentricities.

To purchase or read reviews of HD component tuners, I would turn to C
 Crane,
an online and phone-order company that is responsive to queries from
 visually impaired customers:

If I understand correctly, you don't necessarily have to purchase the hardware.
Especially if your job allows workers to visit any site, you can listen to
sirius online via their player. I'm almost certain it's accessible, because a
blind person on one of these lists utilizes the Sirius player online. with that
said, there are a few stations you cannot listen to online, but I cant remember
which ones. sirius.com will give more information.

We have a bunch of digital music cable channels that pose that problem for
me. Title and artist are printed on the screen, but my wife shouldn't have
to be my DJ every time I want to know what song is playing.

Most of the XM stations that I've listened to will at least back announce
after every 4 or 5 songs, and the decade channeles have jocks that talk even
more. Plus XM play lists are much much larger than those offered by
commercial stations. I thought the antenna might have a problem working
inside, but the signal strength is at its highest possible level with the
antenna sitting against our living room window.

Here in Canada we don't have HD, but I've listened to a lot of it online.
With a couple of exceptions, it's pretty much all music, no commercials

Adrian, in Internet Explorer, to add a station's direct audio link to
favorites, do the following.
1. Right click the link to the station's audio feed.
2. arrow down to the choice that says add to favorites and press enter.
3. Follow the usual process for placing the new favorite in any folder that
you like.

What I do then is to right click the favorite, send the link to my desktop
and place it in a folder which is devoted to the stations that I like. Then
when I want to listen to one, I don't even need to open the browser.

If the station has an embedded player and won't let me add the listen link
to my favorites or to my desktop, I can at least ad a shortcut for the
listen page to my desktop folder, again, avoiding the need to open the
browser.

from what I understand from one of my local audio dealers, audiocraft in

going to get an Internet WI-FI portable and merely paste my icons into it

Paul, before you plunk down any money on an HD radio, check to see what
stations are playing in your area. you can find this out from the IBicquity

checked have a lousy selection of formats on HD radio. the AM band has only
one station broadcasting in HD. I think you are better off with satellite

Re: HD radio

2008-01-11 Thread Adrian Spratt
I don't know how much Radio Shack is charging, but it's likely to be in the
range of $200-$250. I should be clearer about the radio's limitations, based
on the model I bought about two years ago. It's terrible on AM, so you'd buy
it only for FM. Also, there are five-second delays any time you switch to an
HD broadcaster, as I believe is standard with HD. However, I also find the
radio doesn't come up right away when I turn it on, and very occasionally
won't come up at all until I unplug the AC adaptor and reconnect it to the
outlet. I have another radio right next to it for the times I want immediate
reception, such as a news broadcast at the top of the hour. But for me, the
pure clarity of the Boston Acoustics HD's musical sound outweighs its
eccentricities.

To purchase or read reviews of HD component tuners, I would turn to C Crane,
an online and phone-order company that is responsive to queries from
visually impaired customers:

Re: HD radio

2008-01-11 Thread Bob Seed
I wouldn't waist my money on HD radio at this time, as HD radio is still in
the experimental stages of its development. There are still a number of
technical issues that have to be ironed out. In Canada, for an example HD
licences for broadcasters are issued conditionally on an experimental basis
only. If I had my druthers I would purchase a satellite radio before going
HD. When was the last time that you heard an ad on television saying that
the latest model of a given car comes complete with an HD radio? We all know
what happened to am stereo,it appeared to be a good idea at the time,
however the manufacturers of radio receivers failed to come through with the
goods, and the system failed. Another example was the Sony beta system, as
the public showed favour towards the VHS cassette. Now we are faced with
another dilemma, blue ray up against yet another competitive format. I have
had a satelite radio for almost two years now, and frankly would not switch
back. Some times it is best to sit on the sidelines for awhile until such
time that
all of the technical bugs of a given system are ironed out.

I don't know how much Radio Shack is charging, but it's likely to be in
the
range of $200-$250. I should be clearer about the radio's limitations,
 based
on the model I bought about two years ago. It's terrible on AM, so you'd
 buy
it only for FM. Also, there are five-second delays any time you switch
 to an
HD broadcaster, as I believe is standard with HD. However, I also find
 the
radio doesn't come up right away when I turn it on, and very
 occasionally
won't come up at all until I unplug the AC adaptor and reconnect it to
 the
outlet. I have another radio right next to it for the times I want
 immediate
reception, such as a news broadcast at the top of the hour. But for me,
 the
pure clarity of the Boston Acoustics HD's musical sound outweighs its
 eccentricities.

To purchase or read reviews of HD component tuners, I would turn to C
 Crane,
an online and phone-order company that is responsive to queries from
 visually impaired customers:

The prices have dropped quite a bit for that radio. A year ago they were
about $300. Now you can get one of their models for $120 on
amazon.com. The bad review for the HD radio I'm thinking of buying said

that. The FCC won't let the stations run their IBOC's at night yet on

High Bob,
I happen to agree with you.
A little more then 22 years ago, I bought a portable stereo that was AM
stereo able.
Down here in Lake City Florida, none of the stations were transmitting AM
stereo signals.
But when I left Florida and went to Georgia, this is when I was able to pick
up AM stereo stations on that unit.
That thing cost me a little more then $450.
After going through that, I said to myself, never again will I do that.
I've got nothing against HD radio, I just don't thank it's ready for prime

If I end up with an HD radio, it would be because someone gave it to me.
But in the mean while, I will stick with what I have.

going to get an Internet WI-FI portable and merely paste my icons into
 it
taking it around wherever I go and pluggin into either my comp, home
stereo or a pair of portable speakers that I have planted throughout my
 house, garage and patio...

for the cost of an HD, I'd probably go satellite as well. Probably will
get sirius online this weekend and listen to at home or work comp
 without
purchasing any hardware, because not necessary to listen to on bus and
 can
access via wife's phone pda in the car via fm transmitter.

 Cornell

Radio Shack wants $299.00 for the receptor radio they must have quit
 selling there
Accurian model. I couldn't find it.

look to see what Circuit City and Best Buy sells HD radios for. Sony
 sells one
 much cheaper than Boston Acoustics.

I don't know how much Radio Shack is charging, but it's likely to be in
the
range of $200-$250. I should be clearer about the radio's limitations,
 based
on the model I bought about two years ago. It's terrible on AM, so
 you'd
 buy
it only for FM.
But for
 me,
 the
pure clarity of the Boston Acoustics HD's musical sound outweighs its
 eccentricities.

To purchase or read reviews of HD component tuners, I would turn to C
 Crane,
an online and phone-order company that is responsive to queries from
 visually impaired customers:
