I don't know how useful this will be but I found this on sale at a best buy
store. If you go to www.motorola.com you should be able to find info on
their mp3 players. As far as ff and rw in files goes there's no audio
feedback, so I just had to get used to the time I held the joystick in the
ff or rw position. There's a bookmark feature for multiple bookmarks but if
all you want the player to do is remember where you left off in a file it
does that without you doing anything. It is audible ready, but I only use
it for netlibrary or overdrive audio books.

Tim,

Do you have a link for more info on this Motorola unit?

Can you rewind and fast forward through a large NetLibrary book with no
issues?

Also, what did you mean by if you have a good memory you can bookmark more
than one file.. Appreciate the info.

No you don't. I bought a Motorola M25 for $29 that works great with the net
library books as long as it stops before the battery runs completely down.
If you have a good memory you can bookmark more than 1 file.

Hi, Rick! Sorry for my delayed response to your post. At the moment, I
don't know of any good accessible player that will bookmark your net library

 Kathy,

My local library uses net library for downloadable books and I have
signed up to use the service. The big problem I have encountered is
that the books from Net Library are given to you for download as on
huge file. The last book I downloaded was 135 megs. I am on a very
high speed connection, so that is not a problem. The problem for was
with the player I purchased to read these books. It is a Sandisk
Sansa M240. Even though the player has

 1
gb of memory, and can take the whole book with no problem, attempting
to use either fast forward or rewind looses your place and brings you
back to the beginning of the book. I called Sandisk about this and
was told that this behavior is due to the size of the file. It simply
can't handle the indexing for that size of a book. That was $75 down
the drain unfortunately, because that was the only reason I had
 purchased the player.

Can you recommend a player that will work with the huge files
available from net library? The ability to simply play the file with
DRM isn't the only thing needed for net library books, it also has to
be able to allow you to rewind or fast forward through a book without
 totally loosing your place.
 Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks for the responses folks. I did find info on the Motorola players.
If I can find one of the m25 units for a good price, I may try one. One
thing that was not mentioned on the Motorola site was whether it appeared as
another drive in Windows Explorer when plugged into USB. It sounded like
you had to use their own software to transfer files to the device. Although
I know you have to use Windows Media Player to transfer the protected WMA
files from NetLibrary, I am wondering if the device supports Windows
Explorer as well.

Smaller files would certainly be the appropriate solution and I have suggested
this to the Vancouver Public Library and my local Fraser Valley Library but
they say they only purchase distribution rights from Net Library and have no
input as to the format and file structure they use.
I find this difficult to believe and possibly if someone like the Canadian
Institute for the Blind and similar agencies in the U.S. took up the challenge,
well, then maybe we could get this issue resolved. Net Library is making it
easy for themselves without proper regard for its patrons--well, that is my
opinion anyway. Or, it might cost borrowing libraries more for the services if
more effort went into compiling the books in the smaller file format.
Technology is changing rapidly hence the engineering wizards might find a
solution long before the bureaucratic barons of the various library systems are
able to reach consensus.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess if there is no other way, I will have to
bite the bullet and listen to the low bitrate version. I wish they would
just make the much nicer sounding high bitrate version available in a series

With Net Library, there two options:
The first option is to download radio quality. This file is roughly one
tfifth of the CD quality file which is the second option.
So, if your file was 135 megs the other should be about 30 megs.
I had the same problem on a Iriver t 30 where the cd quality file was too
large for the unit--not in terms of its size--the T 30 is 1 gig but the unit
did not play such a large file properly--played about 2/3 of the file then
stopped. The smaller (radio quality) worked fine.

Hi Robert,

The libraries are partially correct, but, as part of their contract with
NetLibrary, they should be entitled to technical support. Through that
channel, the IT dpeartment of your library should be contacting NetLibrary
to see about fixing it in a future update of the service, at a minimum.
Just like most people, it sounds like the library folks just want to take

 Hi All,

I'm looking for an accessible mp3 player that also plays WMA files. Our
library system is getting downloadable audio books and wants to be able to
provide some suggestions for blind patrons. they'd also like to be able
 to
purchase players and loan them with books preloaded on them to blind

not sure it will do the job. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 Kathy,

My local library uses net library for downloadable books and I have signed
up to use the service. The big problem I have encountered is that the
 books
from Net Library are given to you for download as on huge file. The last
book I downloaded was 135 megs. I am on a very high speed connection, so
that is not a problem. The problem for was with the player I purchased to
read these books. It is a Sandisk Sansa M240. Even though the player has
 1
gb of memory, and can take the whole book with no problem, attempting to
 use
either fast forward or rewind looses your place and brings you back to the
beginning of the book. I called Sandisk about this and was told that this
behavior is due to the size of the file. It simply can't handle the
indexing for that size of a book. That was $75 down the drain
unfortunately, because that was the only reason I had purchased the
 player.

Can you recommend a player that will work with the huge files available
 from
net library? The ability to simply play the file with DRM isn't the only
thing needed for net library books, it also has to be able to allow you to
rewind or fast forward through a book without totally loosing your place.
 Any suggestions much appreciated.

Rob,

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess if there is no other way, I will have to
bite the bullet and listen to the low bitrate version. I wish they would
just make the much nicer sounding high bitrate version available in a series
of smaller files. I believe this is what OverDrive does and users of that
service don't have this issue. Thanks again for the advice.

Yeah, that is how the Overdrive service works.

There's also the MuVo line of MP3 players from Creative. I know they've
been mentioned here before. There's the Nomad MuVo's which come in 64M
and 128M sizes and then the MoVo Mix's which come in 256M and 512M
sizes. I have a Nomad MuVo myself, the 128M size, and it works well
with MP3's, WMA's and Audible's format. It does support picking up
where you left off. I find that it does OK with large files, but you do
lose the audio feedback when you're fast forwarding at the end of a
large file.

I bought the Nomad MuVo a while ago, so my facts above may be a bit
off. I also had to upgrade the firmware to get it to support the
Audible file format and the pick up where you stopped feature.

Hi, Londa! I work at our public library which also now has access to free
downloadable books that are in wma-drm (digital rights management) format,
so I know the search for such an mp3 player quite well. I have found two
players that are more or less accessible. one is the Ilo for about $99; you
can get it from Walmoart on-line but not in their stores. I got mine on
ebay for about $50, I think. The other you can find just about anywhere.
It's called the Disney Mix Stick, I think. It's for little kids, but it's
pretty accessible and costs about $40. I'll be happy to talk more about
them and tell you what I know about advantages and disadvantages of each if

 also
not sure it will do the job. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: mp3 player that plays wma's

2006-09-16 Thread Kathy Szinnyey
Well, tate, I haven't really studied it in deatail. It does have several
menus, including an FM radio. But the first thing that does come up is the
mp3 player. It has one of those little displays where you can find play,
stop, backward and forward and I think an enter button, all arranged in that
standard little square you see a lot on displays now. As with all the
cheaper mp3 players, you can't mark where you've left off in a book like you
can with a bookport, but if you just want to get at those wma-drm files and
you don't mind forwarding to find your place, the Ilo is a way to go. It
uses a standard maybe tripple A battery, I think. I haven't messed with it
for awhile, like I said.

The Disney products (the Disnye Mix Stick) is easier to use and cheaper yet,
and you can buy an SD card for it, which you'd probably want to do since it
only comes with 128 meg memory. The Ilo comes with a gig emory. I don't
think it has a place for an SD card, if I remember correctly.

RE: mp3 player that plays wma's

2006-09-16 Thread Rick Alfaro
Kathy,

My local library uses net library for downloadable books and I have signed
up to use the service. The big problem I have encountered is that the books
from Net Library are given to you for download as on huge file. The last
book I downloaded was 135 megs. I am on a very high speed connection, so
that is not a problem. The problem for was with the player I purchased to
read these books. It is a Sandisk Sansa M240. Even though the player has 1
gb of memory, and can take the whole book with no problem, attempting to use
either fast forward or rewind looses your place and brings you back to the
beginning of the book. I called Sandisk about this and was told that this
behavior is due to the size of the file. It simply can't handle the
indexing for that size of a book. That was $75 down the drain
unfortunately, because that was the only reason I had purchased the player.

Can you recommend a player that will work with the huge files available from
net library? The ability to simply play the file with DRM isn't the only
thing needed for net library books, it also has to be able to allow you to
rewind or fast forward through a book without totally loosing your place.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
