Re: buying a new cd drive, some questions

2007-07-01 Thread Don Ball
lots of people like the nec drives. I have one of the liteon dvd drives and
while I don't like its performance while extracting a dvd I do like its cd
burn feature. It works as well as my old liteon does. I have the same drive
you have and I have put it in three different machines and it is still
going.

Subject: buying a new cd drive, some questions

Hi listers,

It looks like my Lite-On drive of a bit over three years is on the
fritz. I have tried running a cd cleaner from memorex through the
thing a number of times, but no major improvement if any when it
comes to the consistent reading of cds, so I'm going to buy another
drive. Since the trend has gone to dvd drives, I am a bit concerned
as to what I should be on the look out for as it concerns working
with my version of Nero 6. I don't want to get home with a drive,
only to find out that it will not be compatible with my burning
software. And, I really like Nero, but don't really want to have to
invest another 80 bucks or so for an upgrade. After all, that price
may be twice that of the driver unit. Anyway, if anybody can shed any
helpful light on my above stated concerns, I will be eternally grateful.

Now, I doubt that I will be watching any movies with this new drive.
I'm only planning to maybe back up files to a dvd disc on occasion,
but there's always that eventuality. Is there a drive that will work
well with both standards, and how much should such a drive set me back?

Oh well, guess that's it. If anybody can come up with any possible
concerns that I should be aware of in making such a switch, please let me
know.

Thanks,

Larry

Hi Larry.

You may already know, but if you're buying a new DVD drive, or a CD drive
for that matter, it's highly likely that you'll at least need to update your
nero software. Updates are different to upgrades in that they are free and
generally just provide bug fixes, support for new drives and some small
enhancements. I think the latest version is 6.6.1.15 which was released in
March this year.

Regards.

High Larry,
Any cd or DVD drive you get comes with software.
Most of them that I know about comes with Nero, but some may come with
Roxyo.
They will set you back some where between $50 to $70.
But it all depends on the brand and mottle.
My best regards to you all!

Re: buying a new cd drive, some questions

2007-06-30 Thread Larry Higgins
Hey John, thanks for the tip. Hopefully I can manage to get a good
deal on a drive minus the software, but guess we'll see. I would
think that the OEM edition you might get with a drive would lack some
of the features of the off the shelf edition of the program. Thing
is, I make absolutely no use of any of the bloatware you get with
Nero, not even the audio editing application, because it doesn't seem
to have any keyboard shortcuts. I'm speaking of Nero Ultra edition.
Good software for it's primary purpose, but the add-ons are
completely unnecessary as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, think I'll hit the Nero site, and look for the latest update
so at least I'll be prepared.

Thanks a bunch,

Larry

Re: buying a new cd drive, some questions

2007-06-30 Thread Larry Higgins
Thanks Kevin for that info. I just downloaded the latest update, and
attempted to install, but am a little unsure about how to get the
serial number without digging up the cd, and my sited wife isn't home
right now to read the thing off the disc anyway. I was thinking it
might be available within Nero, but when I press the option to enter
my serial number, all I get is the Start Smart thing, and maybe the
number is listed there somewhere, but I really can't be sure, so
guess I'd better wait till she gets home. Oh well, not really in any
kind of a hurry I guess g. Don't think I'll be replacing the drive today.

Thanks again,

Larry
