Re: Skype/mic help

2006-03-14 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi,

Thanks for the help. It seems to be working now (could hear myself when I
did the Skype test call).

I made Skype point to my sound card like you said (it was set on Windows
default device; though in Control Panel the default device was set to my
sound card so don't know whether that was the problem). I also undid the
changes I made from following the Skype sound set up guide - don't know
whether I misunderstood the instructions, but I had muted the mic and
unmuted the line in; that was when I started getting the error about make
sure you've selected the right device; so now I muted line in and unmuted
mic, and turned the mic volume up to the maximum and it works. Maybe the
original problem was just the volume not being high enough...I didn't think
to try that first!

Thanks,
Catherine

 Hi Catherine
If you're having trouble making a skype call and you get an error
message about your recording device, it most likely means that you
may have the wrong one selected. go into your skype program, go to
tools, options and then go to sound devices. You should be able to
choose your sound card from there and have it point to a specific one
on your system. you can even have it set so if you get a skype call,
you can have the ring sound that happens come from your pc speakers,
but the output of skype will go to your USB headphones, because
Windows thinks of that USB Mic/headset as another sound device. the
other thought is that you may not have your headphones plugged in
properly. Make sure they're connected. Yeah I know, that's a pretty
obvious one, but you'd be surprised. Never hurts to check everything.

couldn't
hear anything being played back. Skype said I'd need to check my audio
settings. So I worked through the audio set up guide at
http://www.skype.com/help/guides/soundsetup_win2k.html
(I'm using Windows XP).

As far as I can tell I followed the instructions properly; I did recheck a
few things because really don't understand much about setting up sound
stuff, and pretty sure I've done what it says. But the problem now is I
can't even get to try and make a test call. As soon as I go to make the
test call I get an error and it says problem with recording device; please
check audio settings and make sure you have the right microphone selected.

I've tried a few times since making the changes I thought I was meant to,
and keep getting this error. Trouble is I can't remember what changes I
made, and I can't work it out from going through the set up guide again
because I didn't need to make all the changes it said.

As far as making sure I've got the right mic selected goes, I'm not sure
in
all the settings where that decision is made. Also, I know this sounds
crazy but I don't even know what mics there are to choose from: I have a
new computer and didn't take notice when I bought it of whether it has its
own internal mic; I thought I'm trying to use an external mic/headphones
set
I've got...but perhaps there's another mic somewhere and somehow something
I've done is makeing it all conflict...

As far as I know my mic is working properly - I haven't used it for ages
but
it worked last time I did.

I'm wondering whether I could tell people here exactly what settings I
have
in audio settings and see if anyone can help?

I could probably fiddle about and work out what settings I had originally
before going through the audio set up guide; but then I'll be back to
square
1 as far as using the mic goes...it'd be really good if people here could
help me understand what some of these settings mean, e.g. whether I've
muted
the right thing in audio settings according to Skype's audio set up guide.
And is there any other way I can test if my mic's working?

Anyway if that's ok, I'll describe my current audio settings...

Catherine
