Definitely. While a good system wil sound good regardless, different speakers will have different sounds that may or may not affevt the reproduction ina way you like. It is essential that you listen to the speakers with the type of music you will normally prefer, as well as a general mix. Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
Hi again! You You may ask how do small speaker systems such as these manage to sound so good and there’s no denying that they do? Well the answer lies in the Digital Signal Processing used. The Bose and B&w and pretty much got this down to a fine art and the Logitech UE Boom which has been mentioned is pretty good though there’s a little difference in how the sound is heard, the highs get a bit lost in the mid range and bass but then again, the Logitech UE Boom costs considerably less than its competition in the form of the Bose Soundlink III. Some DSP effects are sensitive to the surrounding environments, take that of the Bose Soundlink Mini which adjusts itself according to how loud the speaker sounds and you can hear the DSP adjusting. > On 30 Nov 2014, at 7:19 am, André van Deventer > wrote: > > Hi all > > Perhaps a silly question out of my own ignorance. > > If you choose these kind of portable systems, would the kind of music that > you listen to make a difference? > > Especially for acoustic music including classical music, the volume of the > sound is not that important but the clarity is? > > Andre > > > > -Original Message- > From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dane > Trethowan > Sent: 29 November 2014 09:24 PM > To: PC Audio Discussion List > Subject: Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3? > > Content preview: Yep replying to this again, I have both Soundlink Mini > and >III. Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
That’s a very good question. I’ve found that with the more expensive systems say from B&W and Bose all music is very well represented whether it be classical, rock, wonderful smooth jazz, thumping bass or whatever. I think I know where you’re coming from and the well designed systems present the music in a very well defined way for the whole spectrum whether that be crisp highs, vocal mid ranges or the bass bottoms. Hi all Perhaps a silly question out of my own ignorance. If you choose these kind of portable systems, would the kind of music that you listen to make a difference? Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
The Z@ is backwards compatible from N protocol so you’ll have no problems with that part of it, I did a review of the Z2 for what its worth, an audio review that is. That system for $199 your money is truly amazing given that it only has 2 3.5 inch drivers to power it. I think the reason for the price drop is that the Z2 is made in Chine but don’t let that put you off, the quality is superb both in build and sound. > On 30 Nov 2014, at 5:58 am, Mary Otten wrote: > > I like the sound link 3 ok. Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
I like the sound link 3 ok. I heard it with the less expensive Bose mini sound link, which was impressive for its size. But in the end, I spent the extra $ because of the fuller sound of the 3. It can be a bit too warm at times, and I think it definitely helps to have the speaker elevated to close to the level of your ears when seated, rather than having it sit, say, on a coffee table. But that's not surprising. I'd love to hear the Z2, which now sells for just $199, and could double as a dock. But I read that it does not use the 802-11N protocol, and I would not like to drop back to the older G standard for the sake of having the z2. Mary
Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
Just curious, what do you think of the Bose Soundlink III? I Wouldn’t be without mine however I have found that placement can sometimes be critical for good sound so its fun to experiment a little to see what a difference a few inches over here or over there with speaker placement can make. > On 29 Nov 2014, at 3:40 pm, Mary Otten wrote: > > I have, or should I say had, a Bose Soundlink 3 speaker for use with > portable bluetooth capable devices. Okay, sorry, its my fault, I miss-read your message and thought you were talking about B&O rather than B&W . The B&W T7? I've not heard of that one so time to do my favourite thing it would seem these days, type a few keystrokes into Google and see what I can come up with. Will have to see if they have something out there. Otherwise, the Logitech is probably a good way to go. I once had a Logitech dock with the 30-pin connector that, for its sound quality, was qiute a good deal. Mary
Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
Ah yes, there are some wonderful wireless speaker systems out there both in 1 unit and actual separate speakers and the good old names we know and love have cemented themselves into the landscape. I spoke of the Bose Soundlink III and Soundlink Mini, they’re smaller than what you’re talking about. I have a B&W A5 Wireless speaker system which is about the size of a kitchen toaster but sounds as big as a pair of skippers connected to my Surround-Sound, how something that size can fill a room is still beyond me. I saw a review of a Keff Wireless speaker system and I’m going to make arrangements to hear one in action next year having found a place using Google which sells them. These The Keff speaker system sounds similar to what you’re referring to, its 2 separate speakers but the whole idea is for people who don’t want their speakers connected to an amp or receiver, they look like your standard large type bookshelf speakers and you stream to them. You’re also right when you talk of paying for good quality sound, even the B&W A5 was a considerable outlay. > On 30 Nov 2014, at 12:53 am, pete gurney wrote: > > hi mary, > > i've got two new bluetooth speakers a week ago both of which are fine one > is outstanding but costs more and the other has three diferent versions > each one stepping up in size. > both of these have built in speech that tells you when it's pairing and > when connected and the cheaper one even speaks what battery power is left. > there both made by creative, the dearer one: > sound blaster roar > has outstanding sound with 30 watts output from a unit that is roughly the > size of an A5 sheet of paper and 2 inches tall. > it has bass boost, the ability to expand the sound field, has a micro sd > card slot it's own built in music player and works as a speaker phone. > if you have an sd card inserted you can either play music that is on it, > press a record button to record memos or lectures and such like or if you > are on a phone call via bluetooth to the speaker a press of the record > button will even record your conversation which you can play back using the > buttons on the speaker. > it also has up to date codex built in so it can play uncompressed audio via > bluetooth or via the 3.5 aux in socket, it even has an alarm switch that > when activated a press of a button makes it work as a siron. > it works from both the mains or from the built in battery. > in UK pounds it cost £129 but i don't think it's much more in dollars > in the states. > the second is the: > creative muvo mini. > which i think is also known as the muvo 10. > this is about 7 inches long and 2 inches tall and deep. > it has a rubber coating and is suitable for use in bathrooms, on the beech > and anywhere outdoors even in light rain or where it will get splashed. > it's not as powerful as the roar but still has reasonable sound and works > as a speaker phone. > this one cost £50 UK pounds.creative do another couple of models of the > muvo with the rubber coating with each one being bigger and more powerful > and i think they are called the muvo 20 and muvo 30. > > pete. > > > > > > I have, or should I say had, a Bose Soundlink 3 speaker for use with > portable bluetooth capable devices. Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
hi mary, i've got two new bluetooth speakers a week ago both of which are fine one is outstanding but costs more and the other has three diferent versions each one stepping up in size. both of these have built in speech that tells you when it's pairing and when connected and the cheaper one even speaks what battery power is left. there both made by creative, the dearer one: sound blaster roar has outstanding sound with 30 watts output from a unit that is roughly the size of an A5 sheet of paper and 2 inches tall. it has bass boost, the ability to expand the sound field, has a micro sd card slot it's own built in music player and works as a speaker phone. if you have an sd card inserted you can either play music that is on it, press a record button to record memos or lectures and such like or if you are on a phone call via bluetooth to the speaker a press of the record button will even record your conversation which you can play back using the buttons on the speaker. it also has up to date codex built in so it can play uncompressed audio via bluetooth or via the 3.5 aux in socket, it even has an alarm switch that when activated a press of a button makes it work as a siron. it works from both the mains or from the built in battery. in UK pounds it cost £129 but i don't think it's much more in dollars in the states. the second is the: creative muvo mini. which i think is also known as the muvo 10. this is about 7 inches long and 2 inches tall and deep. it has a rubber coating and is suitable for use in bathrooms, on the beech and anywhere outdoors even in light rain or where it will get splashed. it's not as powerful as the roar but still has reasonable sound and works as a speaker phone. this one cost £50 UK pounds.creative do another couple of models of the muvo with the rubber coating with each one being bigger and more powerful and i think they are called the muvo 20 and muvo 30. pete. I have, or should I say had, a Bose Soundlink 3 speaker for use with portable bluetooth capable devices. For reasons not particularly relevant to this list, I won't have access to that speaker during the school year, since it will be going to school with my spouse. So I'm wondering about other alternatives, perhaps even some that might not be as pricy as the Bose. I've just read about the B&W t7, which actually costs more than the Bose. Then there are Braven models which look interesting, albeit not much less costly than the Bose. Since all my devices are ios, I could also use airplay, not necessary to have bluetooth. What are people using and really liking in this category? Mary
Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
No, B&O being Bang And Olvsin, hope I spelt that correctly . Now there are several Logitech Boom models and the UE Boom is the one I’m referring to, I’d put it just behind the Bose Soundlink III in quality but not by much and that says a lot for the Bose actually given its smaller size. Having said that however the Logitech - in the value for money steaks - is a good buy given that its half the price or thereabouts of the Bose and quality level is still pretty good. I have only one small complaint about the Logitech UE, when the battery level starts to run down the volume level falls and I’m sick of these teething problems that pop up in portable Bluetooth speaker units, if Bose can get it right then why can’t other manufacturers. > On 29 Nov 2014, at 4:37 pm, Mary Otten wrote: > > Well, I have heard of the logitec, but haven't actually heard that > particular unit. Well, I have heard of the logitec, but haven't actually heard that particular unit. And I'm not sure what you meant by b&o. I know you're familiar with B&W, so don't guess that was the question. Color me confused. I have heard neither the Braven that I initially asked about, nor the B&W t7. Re: portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
Hi! Shame you can’t be with your Bose Soundlink III, I wouldn’t be without mine. So a less costly alternative, have you looked at the Logitech UE - Ultimate Ears) - Boom? Its longer than the Soundlink and not as tall but is built very well, sounds reasonable enough but doesn’t go quite as loud as the Soundlink but still goes very loud - you don’t want a Soundlink III at full volume unless you want to lose your hearing . So what did you think of the B&O? I’ve never heard any of their stuff yet. > On 29 Nov 2014, at 3:40 pm, Mary Otten wrote: > > I have, or should I say had, a Bose Soundlink 3 speaker for use with > portable bluetooth capable devices. portable speaker to replace my soundlink 3?
