re bookport
Hi list, is anyone in the u k using a bookport. if so, did you get it straight from a p h, or from some company over here. if you got it from a p h, did you have to do something about the voltage it uses. in america the voltage is 110, and here it is 240. any help would be appreciated. brian.
Re: Bookport Plus and Plextalk PTR2
Dr. Robert Carter told me that the Book Port Plus case actually has some writing on it that the PlexTalk case does not. He was concerned that he wouldn't be able to tell his units apart easily, but apparently this is not an issue. A small detail but one I thought worth mentioning. - Original Message - From: Jonathan Mosen jmo...@mosen.org To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, March 13, 2010 2:45 AM Subject: RE: Bookpo9rt Plus and Plextalk PTR2 If someone gave you a Plextalk Pocket, and a Bookport Plus, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. RE: Bookport Plus podcast
Jonathan Thanx this was exactly the kind of info I was interested in. Wonder how this works though? Is there then a kind of arrangement between plextor and APH that APH may copy the hardware design of the unit? Or is there no copyright on that kind of thing? Very interesting and let's hope Plextor takes note of the features in the bookport plus. If the hardware is the same, there is no reason while the software functions can also not be the same? -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Jonathan Mosen Sent: 05 February 2010 06:44 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Bookport Plus podcast Hi Andre, you're correct to a point. Visually, the only difference is that the Plextalk branded hardware is available in black or white, while the Bookport Plus is available in silver. On the user interface side, there are about 80 differences. These mainly involve playback for now, since the Plextalk Pocket already beat its competition on the recording side by a long way. Navigation within a title is very different in the Bookport Plus compared with the Plextalk Pocket firmware, I think APH have done a brilliant job here. Also the firmware is more responsive. APH is using a human voice for recorded prompts, and I believe Plextalk's Audible.com support hasn't been released yet, whereas it's set for release in the first Bookport Plus firmware. APH also have some clear plans for enabling the WiFi that has been in the unit since the beginning but not enabled in software to this point. These OEM arrangements are not at all unusual. The Pocket is an outstanding recorder. If APH can make it catch up on the playback side, it'll be wonderful. The puzzling thing to me is the whole copyright issue here. They seem to use the exact same menu structure I remember from the pocket reviews, the exact waiting sounds and itseems as if the outside is the same almost as if the same product is simply marketed under a different name. I know that there were some differences between the bookport and book courier. The software, like the bp plus can read audible books, and there must be other things that the Plextalk pocket aren't delivering. No one can compare one to the other untill March, when the BP Plus is do to be released, but along with differences in the firmware there is the support to consider. I haven't compared the 2 products feature for feature, but since APH will be controlling future software development, the feature set will be different. APH has always been very responsive to the suggestions of its customers, and people have already been telling them that they want to see the features they liked in the original Bookport to be put in the Bookport Plus. Ok, so if the Bookport wasn't USB 2.0 compatible then how did people put books or whatever onto the thing, I suppose it was USB 1.1 compatible right? Again, I know very little about these devices. Hi It would be a help if there was a site where we could check the latest news on the new bookport.Somewhere we could also make suggestions for features. I hope that the new bookport does include a decent speaker, the comments I have heard about the Victor Stream say it has a very poor under powered speaker. I would also like the new bookport to have variable speed and pitch control for playing of audio files on the fly. The Stream has this feature but I do not know how well it works. RE: Bookport and other assistive technology
I've assumed news would be posted to, www.aph.org. Is this not correct? If it's going to continue to be portable, the speaker can't sound better than a good cell phone. Personally, I'll purchase my own docking station if it means keeping the size down to something I can easily carry in a pocket. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Russ Sent: Sunday, September 02, 2007 9:30 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Bookport and other assistive technology Hi It would be a help if there was a site where we could check the latest news on the new bookport.Somewhere we could also make suggestions for features. RE: Bookport and Braille Note sound quality
The sound on the BrailleNote isn't that good in my opinion... Subject: Bookport and Braille Note sound quality I use my Bookport to listen to MP3's and its great. I plug it into a mini stereo system and get good sound through the speakers I just got an upgrade to my BN and have found that now I can use the BN to play audio, the sound is not as good as the Bookport. I wonder if anyone has found the same result, or perhaps my BN has faulty sound? RE: BookPort: Can one go to a specific page?
Hi Michael, This is what the BP manual says about the topic. Page Number The menu's Page Number option serves two purposes. First, it informs you of the current page number. Second, it lets you move to another page in the current book. To move to another page, press the 5 key to select the Page Number menu option, then use the numbers on the keypad to type in the number of the desired page. Finally, press the # key to complete your request or press the * key to cancel. When you press #, Book Port will either move to the desired page or it will beep if you entered a page number that is not valid for the current book. Note that the Page Number function accepts only Arabic numbers, so if you want to turn to a page at the beginning of a book that occurs before page 1, you will have to go to page 1 then use the Back Page key to move exactly to the desired page. Be aware that not all books you send to Book Port contain page number information. In the case of a file that does not contain any page information, Book Port uses an approximation to represent pages. The Page Number feature is a particularly useful command, and you may wish to take advantage of the fact that Book Port remembers the menu option you last used, so you may simply press the 0 key to access the menu and have the page number immediately accessible. So, to answer your question, Yes you can. Re: BookPort: Fast forward and rewind?
to elaborate, it is good to have a fairly recent version of the firmware, since APH has made improvements in this aspect of the device. Under Options, you program the time interval moved when you hit +3 forward or 1+2 backward. the choices are 2 10 and 30 seconds. Also, 3, 6 and 9 forward or 1, 4 and 7 backward are supposed to move by increasingly large intervals of time. this isn't too exact in my experience, but then I'm not too exact either so I haven't analyzed it.
