I heard the Sam DJ thing, which is the lite one they use for their own service
is, not sure about the full-fledged version. I wonder why some stations out
there insist on it? Is there stuff in it that Station Playlist wouldn't have? I
suppose if their site is integrated with Sam's request feature it would be hard

I've been trying to do that since SAM BC V2, and V5 is now supposedly

Re: Sam Broadcaster Tutorial

2007-05-20 Thread jazzjourneys.org
I am beginning to wonder is anyone is me. I have mentioned on a couple a
times that I have been using SAM Broadcaster
on our Interet-Only Jazz Radio Station (www.TheJazzy1.com) for a while with
very excellent results. While the jury is still
out to lunch on the company itself, SpacialAudio, I think that SAM
Broadcaster is a terrific Autiomation Software.

We began our streaming operations using SAM 3 with our music being in WMA
(Windows Media Audio) thru SpacialAudio's
www.AudioStream.com, but found it difficult to reach anyone at the company
in a timely manner. However, we switched to
another streaming company, www.StreamTheWorld.com, but kept automating our
music thru SAM Broadcaster with better
results, since www.StreamTheWorld.com streams in Flash Format, which allows
us to reach more listeners.

My suggestion is to go to www.SpacialAudio.com to download there Help
Manual. There you will find everything all the tutorials
you will need to stream in a number of formats.

Is anynoe there? If so holla back.

Therefore we switched tow lesomeonethe comough but later changed to
our media thstarted using I staam currently using SAM 3 and about to upgrade
to SAM 4. My onlyI am not a big fan of the comgoofor quite a while slN

I sent out a post a few week ago about SAM Broadcaster and our experience
 with it.
As I mentioned previously, the software appears to be a very good one,
 especially considering the price.

Prior to using SAM, we had investigated a number of Autimation Software
 and
 Scheduling Programs, and
while most of them were very expensive, we found that SAM did almost
everything that the others were doing.
We also found that the expensive software programs are being used by many
 of
 the terrestial radio stations.

The one major draw back that we had with SAM is that although it is fairly
easy to use, from time to time, it is very
difficult to reach someone from SpacialAudio to trobleshoot and problems
that you may encounter with SAM. The
company doesn't seem to respond on the telephone in a timely fashion. They
will eventually contact you through email,
but there will be times when you will need to speak to live person, in
 'real
time' and this presents a major problem when
you are running a 24-hr radio station such as our Jazz Internet Radio
 Station, www.thejazzy1.com

You should have received an on-line manual with the program. If not, visit
the SpacialAudio website and look in their 'help'
section and you will find it there for you to download. If you need any
additional help, let me know, but I don't deal with
SpacialAudio any more. I can't take the frustrations anymore.

David:
We have an Internet Jazz Radio Station www.TheJazzy1.com that uses SAM
Broadcaster.
In the beginning we were using it through Spacial Audio and their streaming
company, AudioRealm.
However, we encountered a number of problems which we though we the fault of
the SAM Broadcaster,
but it took Spacial Audio about 10 days to get back with us to troubleshoot
the problem, only to find out that
the problem was not with SAM Broadcaster. After that, we dropped their
streaming services. Signed up with another
atreaming company and switched internet service Providers and now we have no
problems. While I think the SAM Broadcaster
is a excellent Automation and Scheduling Software, I don't reccommend the
company that supports and stream the music through it.

If you're asking how to use it, how do you know how good it is?

The only thing SAM BC can do that other more accessible packages can't
is it's back-ended by SQL technology rather than a home-grown database
engine. Otherwise, for the money, Station Playlist does the same
thing, but better.

I will, though, have to give credit where credit is due. Spacial
Audio (and that's not a misspelling for those of you who know that the
word spatial is spelled with a t) invented a programming language,
very geeky and full of lots of tokens and keywords and geeky stuff
like that, to control their software, which other products don't seem
to have a need for.

On the minus side, SAM's event scheduler is an extra-cost program.

Now let's talk accessibility.

I've been using, or attempting to use, SAM BC since version 2. Along
with improvements in their screen layout have come improvements in
screenreader technology, so now, SAM BC Version 4 and Window-Eyes V5.5
seem to go together quite nicely. JAWS still has a lot of problems
with the Delphi-based screen forms and layouts which W.E. does not.
Other than standard menu controls, there is not a single control on
the main screen of SAM that either JAWS or Window-Eyes recognizes as a
standard windows control. That being said, however, most of what
Window-Eyes calls custom controls operate as list boxes, but even with
re-classing in JAWS, it's still not right.

SAM's category management system needs a little work, too. They give
you the ability to have two levels of category, one within another,
that is, but they don't allow you to reference a track by using an
outer-level category name. For example, I have a category called
top40, within which I have three subcategories--artists and albums
(which I've abbreviated to AA), 1hit, and instrumentals. I cannot
tell SAM to play me tracks from top40, or even top40.* (standard SQL
syntax for a key matching a top-level hierarchy and any sub-level)
because the inner categories do not roll up into the outer-level
one. I've argued this back and forth and forth and back with Louis
Louw, Spacial Audio's head programmer, and he says it's coming up in a
future version.

Another thing that SAM has trouble with is something that's so easy to
do in Station Playlist, one wonders why SAM just didn't take the same
approach, and that is, marking the intro and outro points for tracks.
With Station Playlist, you can move a pointer along a timeline and
press a button to hear the marked point in the track, then press
another button to lock it into place. With SAM, you have to enter in
the exact time in minutes and seconds that you want the points to be
stored at. Let me just say here that if there exists in SAM the
ability to move a pointer along a time line like there is in SPL, then
I haven't found out how to do it yet, but it sure would make things
easier and faster, especially with a 50,000-track database.

I'm almost to the point where I feel confident enough to use it for a
live interactive show, but almost.

The sound processing presets that SAM comes with are very good.
They've done a lot of work in cleaning up their audio processing over
the versions, and now I can honestly say I like it. Their crossfading
controls are much easier to use, too.

I thought I heard that Station Playlist was using that Delphi thing too. I
think the intro thing is something every automated station of any kind has
to deal with. I guess if things were always live assisted, it isn't too

word spatial is spelled with a t) invented a programming language,
very geeky and full of lots of tokens and keywords and geeky stuff
like that, to control their software, which other products don't seem
 to have a need for.

If they are, then Ross has replaced all the custom control things
with real ones that our speechware can recognize, which is something
Louis Louw utterly refused and still refuses to even discuss let alone
actually do.

I think the intro thing is something every automated station of any kind has
to deal with. I guess if things were always live assisted, it isn't too
important to have a display we couldn't see.

I'm not all-fired sure the display is invisible, I just don't think
whoever programmed it put it in.

Hi, Hank:

there crossfaiding isn't as tight as stationplaylist though

It can be made to be.

other then that it isn't a bad program. only thing I couldn't figure out is
how to schedule stuff to fire off at the top of the hour etc stuff like
that.

That's where you need the MusicOne (also known as M1) add-on. You can
do some of it yourself with a PAL script, but the right way, of
course, is to have a real scheduling module, which is what M1 is. But
it's extra money!

Re: Sam broadcaster v3 and live voice

2005-11-16 Thread Reese
Hi there:

I found Sam to be inaccessible in some areas with speech. For this reason I
found station playlist to work better for live broadcasting.
As for jaws coming through the sound card. Best to get a hardware
synthesizer. Not sure about the line out jack possibilities there. But I
am sure one of the more experience broadcasters here can answer that
question.

- Original Message - Hi all!
I'm a newbie of this list... I would like to use Sam broadcaster version 3
to broadcast my voice over the music.
So I go in the Window menù and I click on voice fx, but when I click
mic on and then I press the f12 key Sam doesn't put down the volume of
music, it put down the volume only for one second when I release the key.
Why? what can I do?
also... I don't have two sound cards, can you suggest me a program that
allow to broadcast music and voice? Music from sound card, voice from line
in... it is possible without having the problem of Jaws that speaks?

Re: Sam broadcaster

2005-11-11 Thread Brent Harding
I heard it isn't accessible. I was always curious what the Wolf FM guy uses,
as he's got a nice setup with the song info in the player, which I heard is
sort of required if one wanted to get licensed anyways, to my understanding.
Wonder if the sam encoders for winamp are accessible for media player?
Spacial audio is well-known for being able to integrate with that stuff, and
it will do requests live. It's a shame that they didn't build accessibility
in.

The Encoders module is very accessible. SAM BC is not.

But we're workin' on it, as you see if you've just read Jim's message
from JarData.

Haven't tried it, but it's a possibility. Thing is, once you click
the hotspot, you've got to be able to read what pops up, and JAWS and
Delphi just don't play together very well for you to do that.

Wonder then what wolffm is using? I think they do some of the stuff sam
boasts of with syndicated shows, and they use media player, in the abbacast
plugin. You get the info in media player when using it this way of what's on
and the like. It seems that Sam has gotten so popular lately.

SAM is virtually inaccessible with JAWS, slightly less virtually
inaccessible (that is, slightly more accessible) with Window-Eyes.
This is because of the screen-drawing package they are using, called
Delphi, which uses hot-spots and other kinds of movable objects for
sighted folks to click and make things happen. Some of the
on-screen controls are recognized by Window-Eyes, but a friend and I
have not really gotten far enough with it for either of us to say
we're comfortable using it to broadcast with or do a live gig with.

And before you go thinking that maybe the manufacturer should hear
from us as a user group, don't waste your time, unless you really feel
like taking on a project that will require a Herculean effort on your
part and staying power like you never thought you had. My friend and
I have both been told twice now that Spacial Audio is not interested
in re-writing their screen stuff so that we can use it, they're a
small company, they don't have the resources, blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah. Mind you, they were very nice about saying blah blah blah,
but that's all we got was yackity yack, blah blah, blah blah, thank
you very much now please go away. A fine attitude, doncha think?
