Re: singing dectalk and soundblaster

2005-02-06 Thread Robert Stokes
Hi Jim,
Unfortunately, the TextAssist programme that uses Prody Parrot is inferior
to the original and uses a different type of speech. For some reason,
Creative Labs stopped using the Dectalk speech. I do have Prody around here
somewhere. My grandchildren played with it for a time.

The Prody Parit program which comes with some Creative Labs sound cards
uses the text assist program and it is usable with windows XP. You can
install just the text assist speech and pass on the parot.

the singing voices but unfortunately, it won't work with Windows XP and I

Subject: singing dectalk and soundblaster

Hi,
Somewhere in 1996 I used to have windows 95 and a soundblaster 16
soundcard, running a piece of software called text-assist. Text-assist
had a text reader, sort of a talking notepad, and you could make it sing
using pure text together with a few special symbols to indicate frequency
and note durations.

That text-assist soundblaster thing sounded almost exactly like the
dectalk 4.3, which appears to be a completely different bit of software.

On the web, there are numerous songs to download, made by dectalk
enthousiasts, that make the dectalk sing wonderful songs. Not only
one-liners, but complete songs with lyrics. And even better: not only
monophone songs, but multiple voices sounding at once, creating very nice
close harmony compositions. Even more: some guys have created dectalk
vocals along with background music. What can be achieved with either
text-assist or dectalk is impressing.

Now I have two questions. First: if I happen to find the floppy
containing text assist again, will that software then be able to run on
windows xp with a totally different soundcard? I still have one from
Creative, but this is the soundplaster extigy and not the sb16 anymore.
Any experience with text-assist on a newer operating system than windows
95 for which it was originally made?

Second: the dectalk 4.3 software doesn't seem to be available anymore. I
now know that it is produced by "digital Equipment Corporation", which
is, y the way, why the letters D E C are in the word dectalk, but what
they currently sell is a much more human-like sounding software
synthesizer that cannot sing, which is not what I'm hoping to find
because I want to create my own synthetic dectalk songs. Does anyone know
how I can obtain a copy of the dectalk software somewhere?

Kind regards from Holland,
Paul.

Hi,
I notice that under the burn options for Music CD, there is an option

regular audio, CDDA format, CDs using MP3 files. So, , exactly what does

Right! well its been a while since I've needed to make any ajustments in
this
area so I'm going to have to rely on memory here.

Firstly you go into preferences and select the "OUTPUT PLUG-INS" branch of
the
tree. Select the "WAVEOUT" plug-in and press the "CONFIG" button. The
first
thing you need to do is to make sure that Winamp is accessing your sound
device
directly rather than going through anything like the Microsoft Sound Mapper
or
the Total Recorder driver.

Next you may like to ajust the various buffer track-bars you'll find in the
"CONFIG" dialog, its a bit of a guessing game to find out which combination
works best and every system behaves differently.

Tweeking Winamp in this way is detailed fully in an issue of Silicon Chip
which
came out about 4 years ago, the publishers of Silicon Chip did about 4 or 5
articles dealing with Winamp and associated issues as Winamp was used as a
core
to the remote control jukebox project which readers could build.

Dane,

What would the "tweaking", that one would do, to bridge this problem be, in
Win Amp? Which part of the preferences would one go to and what should be
done?

I take it what you actually mean is you want a MP3 player that doesn't cross
fade rather it doesn't insert 2 second gaps but you should consider why
some
players actually do leave a gap. Various MP3 players (some portables and
walkman type) have to insert a gap so as to load the following MP3 track
into a
buffer, the buffer is used fo the shock protection system etc.

If you're talking DVD players? Then the one's I've seen do not leave a gap
between tracks, they do not need a buffer as they do not get moved from
point A
to point B as a rule.

If you're having problems with gaps in
Winamp (this can happen on slower PC's) then you can tweek Winamps settings
to
avoid this problem.

Eliminating Echo from Real Player Playback

2005-02-06 Thread Jana Schroeder
Hi,
I generally prefer to use Winamp for listening to audio. However, the NPR
web site and some others automatically open Real Player even when I have
specified
Winamp as the default player for Real files. Winamp plays audio fine.
however, in my Real Player the audio always has a big echo. Is there some
setting
I can change in Real Player to get rid of this? Alternatively, is there
some way to get NPR audio to play in Winamp?
My computer is a Gateway laptop which has a sound chip, not a sound board
and runs on Windows 98 SE so it's pretty old. I have a broadband cable
connection
and have Real Player configured for the correct connection. As I said, I
listen to other Internet audio without any problems. Any assistance would
be
hugely appreciated.

Re: Recording Skype calls in Goldwave

2005-02-06 Thread shawn klein
Um, guys, you need 2 sound cards to record skype
calls. Unless all you want to do is record yourself
talking. Whatever goldwave is set to record, whether
it be the mike input, or stereo mix, is what skype
will be picking up from your side and sending to the
other party. If you try to record the people you're
talking to with stereo mix or what you hear, all
they'll hear is your Jaws, and their own voices
echoing back at them from your sound card. If you
don't have 2 sound cards, you'll have to get another
1, or get yourself a splitter cable and a cassette
deck. The only reason the answering machine works is
that while it's playing it's message, it blocks any
input from the caller's end from going back over the
line while it's playing the message and recording the
caller's message. The caller doesn't hear anything
from your mike, though he does hear what's going on on
your sound card. When you call somebody and the
answering machine answers and you hear their Jaws,
outlook express and msn sounds etcetera, that's why.

You can do it with one sound card provided you don't have software
speech running. When you say they can hear jaws below this assumes you
are using jaws and it further assumes you are using software speech.
YOu can do it with one sound card provided your screen reader regardless
of which it is is using hardware speech. Or if not, then two sound
cards are in order.

Re: Cross-Fading

2005-02-06 Thread Andrea Sherry
Well I can do that with an audio cd. However I thought that there might be a
way of encouraging .mp3 tracks to cross-fade. I would have thought that the
buffering of .mp3 files would have been transparent to the system ie. that
this would have occurred in the background and not interfered with output.
Perhaps not.

WAV Files

2005-02-06 Thread Kristine Hickerson
Hi All,

I think this is probably fairly easy but I've never done it so I'm not sure.

How do you convert WAV files to MP3? Which program is best to use and is
there simply a command to do this in the menu somewhere?

Thanks much.

You can use CDex to re-encode your .wav files to mp3, and you can get it
from www.jfwlite.com
Take an extra moment when you find yourself at piece, to think about your

Re: Recording Skype calls in Goldwave

2005-02-06 Thread Paul Erkens
No matter what you want to record, in fact you can choose from a number of
options.

First, if you want to record audio coming from the internet, wether it be
skype calls complete with ringing and hangup signals or just a radio
shoutcast stream, then it is always possible to connect your cassette
recorder to your soundcard and start recording. However, this method
requires that you shut off any windows sounds and the speech coming from
your access software. Everything coming from your soundcard goes on tape.

Another option is to use the "what u hear" setting in your soundcard and
record off it. To make this work, you can go into your windows sound setting
(start -> programs -> accessories -> entertainment -> volume control) and
tweak your sound card as follows.

What is often unknown is, that the windows volume control applet really
consists of two distinct parts: one fader set for playback and another,
different fader set for recording. The playback panel shows up when you
first open volume control. There you have the slider for the master volume
all the way to the left, followed by all other sliders that are configured
to show up from there, over to the right. In this playback panel, every
slider has its own checkbox beneath it called "mute" that, when enabled,
will shut off any sound coming from that audio source.

A few things are noteworthy here. First: if you see a slider for your
microphone in the playback panel, the checkbox below it labeled "mute"
should be checked, on. If it is off, then you'll hear the sound that goes
into your microphone directly come out of your speakers again. I don't know
the English term for the effect this may cause, but it may result in very
loud and uncomfortable noises. While all other sliders in the playback panel
should be unmuted, your microphone should be muted in the playback panel.

Second: if you wonder what source actually produces the speech coming from
your Jaws' synthesizer, it is the "wave" slider. If you turn that down by
tabbing to it and continuously pressing down arrow, it will gradually fade
softer. The wave source also produces all sounds that come from windows, for
example when it starts up, and it is also the source of winamp, realplayer,
windows media player etc. Only audio cd's and midi files come out of a
different source.

The recording panel in windows volume control can be opened by entering the
pulldown menu at the top by pressing and releasing alt. This will open the
leftmost menu from the pulldown bar. Whereas most programs have a file menu
at the very left of the pulldown menu bar, windows sound control calls this
menu "options". Just arrow down until you reach "properties" and press enter
to open the dialog.

In this dialog, you can do two basic things. You can switch from playback
panel to recording panel, and/or you can configure which faders (sliders)
you want to have visible in each of the panels. This works as follows.

When the dialog opens (after you press enter on properties on the "options"
menu), you are in a listbox that lets you select for which of your
soundcards you want to configure the playback and/or recording panels. Just
arrow up and down to select your current device. If you have only a single
soundcard installed, then this choice is already set correctly. press tab to
move on to the next item in the window.

This is a set of radio buttons, that can be selected using up and down
arrow. This group of radio buttons allows you to select which panel to
configure: playback or recording. After making your selection, tab on once
more.

Now you are in a special kind of list box. While arrowing up and down, you
may notice that each individual item can be toggled on or off by pressing
space bar. This listbox shows all possible sliders that can be shown or
hidden for each panel. For playback, select all audio sources to be turned
on as far as you are using them. I mean: turning on an audio source you are
never using, only introduces hiss in your audio which is what you don't
want. After selecting the faders you want to show up for the given panel,
tab on and you'll land on the OK button.

Now, the listbox I just mentioned contains the control that is mostly called
"what you hear", or "stereo mix". This is a special kind of audio source,
only useful in the recording panel slider set. To understand how to use it,
think of this.
Many audio sources can be played back simultaneously, but only one can
normally be recorded from. Only if you use the "what you hear" audio source
as your recording source, you'll be recording the combined audio signals
that are played back at any time by your soundcard. The what you hear source
is almost ideal for recording audio from the internet, but as mentioned
above, it has the same final effect as recording on cassette tape, because
everything coming from your soundcard is sent to your audio recording on
disk.

After pressing spacebar on the

Hi,
you must rip the audio CD first.
that means use a program to convert the .cda files to .mp3, & then you
may
put them in 1 folder so you can copy them to clipboard then start Nero &
paste them in.
& now to the other person with the mp3 CD question,
A MP3 CD will have a autorun file on it allowing it to play when you
insert it in your CD drive.

could

copy and paste the data from the CDA files into a folder on the hard

I
check to see if the audio data is really there, it doesn't appear to
be.
It looks as if I'm just copying the name of the track and not the ctual
data; e.g. one file just had 44 bytes. Is there a way to put all my
audio tracks into one folder for Nero to burn without my having to run
and grab each CD when Nero wants to burn each track?

RE: moving forward in real alternative

2005-02-06 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
Real Alternative is a package that allows Real Content to play in
other players. It is not a player in itself, though it does include the
Windows Media Classic player. However I, and most other people, use Winamp.
If you're using Windows Media Classic, I don't know how to jump. If you're
using Winamp, hit ctrl+j to jump to a specific time in a file, then enter
that as mm:ss. That is, 60 minutes would be
60:00
You will be taken to 60 minutes from the beginning of the file.
If you're using Winamp with the Jaws scripts, you can do relative
jumps. That is, you can jump five minutes forward in a file, or five minutes
backward. To jump forward by 60 minutes, enter alt+shift+j, then type
60:00
to jump backwards by 60 minutes, enter alt+shift+j and type
-60:00
HTH.

and played, like other digital audio files. no more real time transfers. I
was at an event recording and next to me was a guy from one of the local
radio stations also recording. he said that his machine recorded on to
gigabyte flash memory cards and provided about five hours of recording on
each card. I learned later that the price for such a recorder is about
three or so times the price of the MZ-b100.

eventually, the price will come down on the solid state flash recorders,
obviating the need for the minidisk recorders. However, minidisc is still
the most cost effective solution I have found at this time. Unfortunately,
we are at the edge of a transition but the market hasn't fully turned yet.

Hi Angie.
Just purchased the Sony MZ B100 last night. This device does not have a
usb connection like I wanted but it does have internal speakers and larger
than average buttons. I suppose I can live without the usb connection for
the moment - hope I don't live to regret this!

Best wishes.
Andy from sunny Kilcreggan.

Hello Andy,
I have used the Sony ICD P28, which is a digital recorder. It was about
$100 over here. I am totally blind and can use it without problems. It
has a USB port.
You can also change certain settings, like the record quality, from
within the software that comes with the unit.

This particular model does not record things in stereo, but it sounds
like it could work for what you need. I have heard that other Sony ICD
recorders are
accessible.

Good luck,
Angie

Re: WAV Files

2005-02-06 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. a direct link for CDEX is
http://jfwlite.com/cdex_151.exe
That's a direct link to download the file. You can also rip your audio
cd's directly into mp3, which will eliminate the need to convert files again.

At 04:56 PM 2/6/2005, you wrote:
You can use CDex to re-encode your .wav files to mp3, and you can get it
from www.jfwlite.com
Take an extra moment when you find yourself at piece, to think about your
values, and your own affluency.
