Re: [PD] Mac OS X Intel autobuilds

2008-01-22 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

I don't think anyone has done a 10.5 build or a universal build yet.
If someone wants to tackle that, then we can just have universal
builds every night on whatever machine AFAIK.

2008-01-22 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

There is an issue with another of the Poly servers that is causing
this machine to deliver those pages. It's related to a network
share. They had a problem with an internal server. pdpedia is fine.

I am heading over there to iron out the details, so it should be back

Re: [PD] convert reson filter bandwidth to decay time

2008-01-22 Thread Charles Henry
It depends upon the order of the filter... by resonant filter, I
assume you mean a two-pole bandpass filter. Here's the math for
converting between bandwidth and exponential decay

Take a function, g(t)=1000^-(t/r)
where r is the -60 dB ring time. I used a base of 1000, because a
factor of 1000 = 60 dB

g(t)=e^-(t*ln(1000)/r)

Now we take a one-sided fourier transform of this function:

G(f)=integral(0, inf;  e^(-2*pi*i*f*t)*e^-|t*ln(1000)/r|)
G(f)=integral(0, inf;  e^((-2*pi*i*f-ln(1000)/r)*t)
G(f)=1/(-2*pi*i*f-ln(1000)/r) * e^((-2*pi*i*f-ln(1000)/r)*t), eval at t=0, t=inf

G(f)= - 1/(-2*pi*i*f-ln(1000)/r)
G(f)=1/(2*pi*i*f+ln(1000)/r)

G(f)=r/ln(1000)  / [2*pi*i*f*r/ln(1000) + 1]

now, it's just a simple matter of finding the -3 dB points to find
bandwidth of this function and interpreting the result of this
function...

|G(f)|^2=(r/ln(1000))^2 / [1 + (2*pi*f*r/ln(1000))^2]

0.5 = 1 / [1 + (2*pi*f*r/ln(1000))^2]
(2*pi*f*r/ln(1000))^2 = 1

f = +/-  ln(1000)/(2*pi*r)
bandwidth
bw= 2 * ln(1000)/(2*pi*r)

conversions:
bw = ln(1000) / (pi*r)
r = ln(1000) / (pi*bw)
r is in seconds and bw is in Hz

Try out these relations and see if they work.

Re: [PD] convert reson filter bandwidth to decay time

2008-01-22 Thread Derek Holzer
Is what you are looking for a resonant comb filter? I.e. a delay line
with a resonant frequency which "rings"? Check the archives for the
"resonant comb filter series" thread. Me, Davide Morelli and Ian
Smith-Heisters worked out a bunch of stuff there. I wouldn't know
off-hand how to convert a band pass filter to a comb filter, though. I
only how to do it with delay lines right now. Some Googling on filter
theory could fix that pretty fast, though...

best,
d.

[PD] convert reson filter bandwidth to decay time

2008-01-22 Thread Libero Mureddu
Hi,
I have  a simple patch with a [click~] object connected to a [reson~]
filter. I'd like to know how it is possible to convert the bandwith
parameter of the filter to decay lenght (in milliseconds).
In SuperCollider there is a particular version of the "resonz" filter
called "ringz", here is the description:
Ringz.ar(in, freq, decaytime, mul, add)

This is the same as Resonz, except that instead of a resonance
parameter, the bandwidth is
specified in a 60dB ring decay time.

My knowledge of filters is too little to be able to convert the
between the two parameters by myself, any help appreciated!

thanks,

libero

i thought it is covered in the help-patch for [pix_coordinate]

of course, you have to know that there is such an object and that it
might approximately do what you want...

However, is there somewhere (opengl-) documentation what exactly the

Re: [PD] pdlua output

2008-01-22 Thread robcanning

i'll clarify a bit...

i add a list to a table with:

-- "insert [list]" into 1st inlet:
function M:in_1_insert(list)
   table.insert(self.mydata, list)
end

then i search the table for the pattern "score = 1" and ask it to print
the lines containing the matched pattern

-- what to do on "scores" into 1st inlet:
function M:in_1_scores()
for i, v in ipairs(self.mydata) do
if string.match(v, "score = 1", 1, true) then
self:outlet(1, "list", v) end
end
end

the problem is that the string.match is expecting a string and getting a
table and i'm not sure how to fix this - i thought the ipairs was
iterating the table into a string but its not.

here is the error from pd:
[string "rob2"]:19: bad argument #1 to 'match' (string expected, got table)

lua and lua files attached

any guidance welcome,

thanks

that works, it was what I was looking for too, and it's probably more
efficient - but it does need some fiddling if you want to keep the
various movies lined up full frame and move the exposed part around.
Also it only works for rectangles.

But it will be just what I need for fitting parts of an image onto
walls on a stage!

thanks.

You can use awkward maths to change the texture coordinates of the
rectangle, to display only part of the texture. The tricky part of the
maths is due to these things:

1. textures are stored in memory with dimensions rounded up to the
nearest power of 2 (at least on my gfx card).

2. texture coordinates range from 0 to 1 in "mode 0" (the only mode I
could get to work on my gfx card...).

3. gl coordinates are not in pixels, but some weird unit where
height-of-gemwin = 4 or so.

[PD] pdlua output (was: manipulation of text files - grep - shell - coll)

2008-01-22 Thread robcanning
hi,
ok - i have started learning to use lua with pdlua and have a question
with regards to getting stuff out of the my pdlua object

in lua this works:
for i, v in ipairs(self.mydata) do if string.match(v, "score = 1", 1,
true) then print(v) end end

so i thought if i change print(v) with pd.post(v) i would get an output
in the pd terminal but no...

also how would i get the output of the above to come out of outlet
self:outlet(v) i would have guessed but obviously i have the wrong approach.

thanks

robc

-- what to do on "scores" into 1st inlet:
function M:in_1_scores()
for i, v in ipairs(self.mydata) do if string.match(v, "score = 1", 1,

interesting problem with an interesting solution and interesting to see,
that the alpha-depends-on-order-weirdness can be exploited in that way.

I replied too quickly,

a better (more general solution which could involve more movies and
no masking) would be:

set the gemwin 'orthagonal'
layer the movies so A is furthest away, then B, C etc
in front of this place a black rectangle
then transparent rectangles part A, B C etc

render order is:
movie A
then part A
then movie B
then part B
then movie C
then part C
etc
finally render the black rectangle

this way you can easily move the part around

a somewhat clumsy workaround would be to make a transparent rectangle
the size of part A, in front of the others in space, then movie B
with the black masks behind that, then movie A behind that:

set your gemwin to 'orthagonal'

set the render order of the oblects:

movie A first
part A second
movie B with masks etc next

but there is probably also a way to render part of the image, I'd
like to know also

[PD] GEM: texturing parts of multiple movies

2008-01-22 Thread Georg Holzmann
Hallo!

I have the following (basic) GEM problem (and some ascii-art ;) :

I have 2 movies running with pix_film which are rendered on rectangles
with the same size over the whole screen and I want to see only a part
of each movie (see illustration):

from movie A:
---
| |
| |
| |
|  |---|  |
|  | partA |  |
|  |   |  |
|  |---|  |
---
from movie B:
---
|||   |
|| partB  |   |
|||   |
|||   |
| |
| |
| |
---
together:
---
|||   |
|| partB  |   |
||(movieB)|   |
|  |---| ||   |
|  | partA |  |
|  |(movieA|  |
|  |---|  |
---

So I tried to lay black rectangles over the movies and let free
partA,partB so that one can only see these parts. But this does not work
for multiple movies, because then I only see the movie with the highest
gemhead priority (and also with alpha blending it was not possible) ...

So my question: is this possible without additional pix_* commands ?
(e.g. texturing only a part of the movie onto a rectangle ... ?)
If yes has someone an idea how ?

Thanks for any hint,
LG
Georg

PS: if this is too confusing I can send an example patch ;)

There's also the latest in that family: "phase-bashed packet
synthesis" by Miller. He has two papers on it on his site, an example
in the Pd docs, a little bit in his T&ToEM book and a very impressive

 hi raul

when doing ascii art, the font and formatting you are using is
critical

for the correct appearance. in order to display your aa correctly in
other people's email-client as well, choose 'plain text' instead of
'html' format and a monospace font type while typing.

to my knowledge, this is not what the debian-package management does.
if you update a package, the old one will be removed and the new one
will be installed (with some exceptions in /etc). it should take equally
long.

pd-extended _used_ to install in /usr/local and thus would not interfere
with an existing puredata (debian package) installation which would go
to /usr.
iirc, hans wanted to fix this (that is: install pd-extended into /usr),
but i don't know whether he has already done so.

this most likely means that you are loading a different Gem version as
ordinary user and as root.
run pd in verbose mode and see what it says when loading Gem (and/or the
"missing" objects)

(since you hinted that you might have several versions of pd installed,
it might be that root is using /usr/bin/pd your ordinary account is
using /usr/local/bin/pd; this also effects the externals that might be
found automatically; but this also depends on your path-settings)

>
>>  readdir
>>  ... couldn't create

conclusion:
  run "pd -verbose"
and
  run "pd -version" and "which pd" to see which pds the 2 accounts are
actually using
