currently if a discussion spreads on a few monthes ,
 you can't follow it.

and it would be easier to have a common interface to use all the
informations that sleep inside.(sorting by type of content (such as
 gem, control, audio for instance)

i feel it would be useful.
to complement the documentation since many discussions are in there

 make it a forum ?

 just thinking loud .

or via git from sourceforge:
   git clone git://pure-data.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/pure-data/pure-data
   git checkout 0.45-0test1

Some new features:

binary netsend/netreceive (so you should no longer need an extern for OSC)

pd~ (multiprocessing) works on windows and is less likely to deadlock although
not yet perfect

multi-purpose array and text objects. Array is a more general
replacement for the table, tabread and tabwrite obejcts. text is
sort of like Max's coll but simpler and hopefully more powerful.

texts are also avaioable as fields in data structures.

tempo messages for delay, metro, timer, and test sequence. In particular
you can specify or measure time in samples, but you can also use this for
changing the speed of an ensemble of delay loops while keeping them in sync.

Objects/messages/comments have settable box widths.

Also various improvements in audio and midi handling:

The Pd window now tells you whether PD has an audio device open or not

Fixed hangups exiting when using jack

Got ASIO working again on PC (it was apparently broken; I don't know for how
long.)

cheers

[PD] ubuntu portaudio unstable audio device list

2013-04-29 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello list,

I have trouble with automatically choosing audio devices because the
list of available device is not the same each time I launch pd.
I am on ubuntu 12.04 / pd 0.44.3. I want to use portaudio with the
pulse device because I'm running another software in parallel, that
can only use pulse for playing sound.
When I launch pd, the list of available device for portaudio is not the
same each time... that makes difficult to choose pulse automatically.

Is there anything I can do to be sure of choosing the good device?
Here is an output of 3 different launchs:

Re: [PD] Preferences Dialog

2013-04-09 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Under osx, this is usually what is done,
there is no apply button.

Hans's proposition to have separate message is very good as well. It is
much better to change from the patch, for example, only the number of
audio outputs than to overwrite all parameters.

One thing missing as well is the ability to select audio/midi device by
name from the patch, instead of numbers. This is specially important for
installation when you have different devices connected and no way to be
sure of the order...

One preference menu seems very nice to me. Audio / midi / startup / path
tabs for examples. In osx, the preferences menu should not be under the
Edit menu but under the main app name, just after About

Good luck,
Best,

I think this makes a lot of sense. Making the preferences take effect
immediately is how most platforms are going these days, and is really how Pd
itself responds. So I think Pd's preferences should behave accordingly.

The problem is that it will be tricky to do with the current message format.
I think you should probably just ignore the existing preferences mega-messages
and make one-message-per-preference. That would also make it easier to set
the preferences from a patch.

Hi List,
I'm going to start coding up a single preferences dialog to replace the
disparate settings dialogs that live in non-standard menus of Pd.

It will be Firefox Style, meaning a Preferences option in the Edit
menu. The dialog will have a row of buttons at the top that are icons
above text. When a button is clicked it will bring up the tab in the dialog
window for those particular settings. (This turns out to be surprisingly
easy to do in Tk.)

So far I think there should be an Audio button, MIDI button, and maybe
a GUI button that could be be split out later if needed.

I'd like to have changes take effect immediately-- otherwise it might get
confusing if one changes settings in one tab, then makes changes to another
and clicks Apply. How would this effect UX on Windows and OSX?

lattest pd will not help. you need Gem for all of this.
since GEMglBegin works, you certainly have one version of Gem.
since gemvertexbuffer did not create, your version of Gem too
old. according to gem website, the last release is 93.3, from

the most efficient is to use gemvertexbuffer to draw a

the fastest to code is to use repeat/separator/curve 2 in
order to draw many lines

you can also do like in openGL : using GEMglBegin,
GEMglVextex (many of them thanks to an iterative loop), and
GEMglEnd

you can also do that in shader, but that would be to much
complexity for this.

and you can certainly find other way to do that, but i

Hello Alexandros,

Do you have the current Pd-extended (which is 0.43.4) ? You should
have a recent Gem whit it.

For glVertex, you have to write [GEMglVertex3f] to use float.

2013-03-15 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

cool,

Should be nice to have them manage list as well, it's better to do that
in C when you want to transmit long list of float.

Having choice of endianness may be good as well.
You can copy both from the externals I've sent yesterday if you want.

OK, I added two externals into svn at
http://pure-data.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pure-data/trunk/externals/mrpeach/serializer/

[b2f] will take four bytes and return a float, while [f2b] takes a
float and outputs four bytes. (This is really easy in c...)
Of course it only works if the floating-point format is the same at
both ends.

THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO PARSE, IF YOU LIKE YOUR NERVES.

The first problem is
1. Error was in using on the server side an ntohl() on a float number,
which corrupts it heavily. Mark my words, ntohl() is an enemy of the
float.

Just receive it reversed and manually work out the conversion, you HAVE
to do it manually anyways :P

2. Float is a complex standard, even more complex when Pure Data
converts everything to decimal partially per byte. Separate Mantissa,
Exponent and Sign using bitwise operators [][], and work out the
float conversion.
Follow this thread for Mantissa, that one is the hardest Convert

Is there a method for correct endianness in Pure Data, like these C

ntohs()--Network to Host Short
ntohl()--Network to Host Long

You can do that with Pd like this (ntohs):

[unpack 0 0]

[* 256]|

[+ ]

[ \

or

[unpack 0 0]
| |
| [* 256]

Floats are harder but still possible. The main difficulty is in
splitting the incoming stream in the right places. (I think ASCII is
not orders of magnitude slower, and it is also less ambiguous).

32 bits i386.

The Mac OS X build servers have 3.99.5-2 installed on them and Pd-extended
0.43.4 shipped with 3.99.5. Ubuntu as of 12.10/quantal has 3.99.5 also. I'm
on 12.04/precise, which has 3.99.3 and mp3amp~ doesn't crash on load but I
also can't get it to playback a stream.

Yes it's not on the loading of the object but when a stream is played.
From what i see in the svn, a problem may be that mp3amp compiles
against local headers located in the unauthorized folder: mpg123.h,
mpglib.h and interface.h
maybe those headers are not compatible with 3.99 version, they are from
lame 3.92

I still don't really know what the cause of the issue is. If the library
version is the issue, then sounds like mp3amp~ needs to be fixed to work with
3.99.5 since all the distros are moving to that.
I tried to debug the problem a bit but can't manage to use gdb, it says
me no stack when i try to backtrace.

I just rebuilt the lame package from scratch on the Mac OS X 10.5 i386 32-bit

problem?
I didn't found any fresh 0.43-4 build so tried with the 0.44.0 build and
it still have the problem.

2013-02-13 Thread Nicolas Montgermont
I know I may be one of the latest users of mp3amp but unfortunately I
can't use reandanysf~ for that project...
What I'm saying is there is a difference between the libmp3lame embedded
in the release of pd-extended and the libmp3lame in fink, and I think
this is making mp3amp crashing.

Two examples:
here, mp3amp crash in pd-extended 0.43-4 but
- If I use the unauthorized lib contained in the artefact build on
jenkins and put it in ~/Library/Pd, it ask me for libmp3lame in
/sw/lib/, then if I download the lib with fink, it doesnt crash anymore.
- or if I overwrite the libmp3lame contained inside the pd-extended
release with the one in fink, it doesn't crash neither.

So what I'm pointing is there may be an error on the libmp3lame file
that is embedded with pd-extended.

But I don't know the embedding process, so I can't describe more.

I have a solution for myself, but I am searching for a long time
universal solution, and I think Pd-extended is a good option.

I hope this is clear?
Thanks for your help.

For example if I try to use unauthorized/mp3amp~ it crashes, but if I replace

Hey Hans and all,

Thanks a lot for the hard work during the past years.
Pd-extended is a major advantage for using and teaching pd, and is a
nearly a mandatory tool to bring people not used to programming in the
pd universe.
I Hope the choice of a maintainer by library will make the release cycle
of Pd-extended faster, and will prevent you from the painful work of
maintaining other's libraries!

Looking forward to the 0.44 ;)

a few comments though, (sorry if I miss previous discussions):
- is is possible to get rid of the french localization?
- how do I load a gui plugin?

and a few ideas:
- one menu with all the preferences
- possibility to choose between different config file.

maybe these are doable as gui plugins?

Best,
n

fixes, new features. Many thanks to you and everyone involved.

Personally, I welcome many of your decisions like not loading libraries
per default, requiring a maintainer for each lib, removing unmaintained
libs. In my experience it was never so easy to write portable patches
between pd + libs and pd-extended. It's a huge goal to provide a
consistent experience across platforms, but from what I saw in recent
times this goal is largely satisfied. It is really comfortable to tell
people: You just need to install Pd-extended for running this patch
and they don't have to bother with any special settings or

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 released!

2013-01-30 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

I agree, the libraries should be loaded in the patch.
However I'm kind of dreaming of an option line in the preferences to
choose your preference file for two reasons:

- it make visible the name of the file loaded
- it allows to switch easily between different audio/midi/others settings

These settings are one of the only thing you must reconfigure when you
travel a patch between computer, and as there is only one solution, it's
not so easy to keep special configuration for beginners.
It's usual to see people having problem to have sound just because their
audio settings are still with 6 output and the audio card is not plug
anymore.

A quick internet translations makes me think that I agree with what cyrille is
saying. The preferences shouldn't be used for loading libraries, as they have
been in pd and especially Pd-extended for a long time. Pd-extended no longer
lets you set libraries to load from the preferences, this is one step to get
us on the right direction. I've been thinking about other things as well,
here's how I'm thinking:

* new standard library that is larger and more consistent than what's in
vanilla, things like all math and logic objects both message and signal
included, rather than needed to load a library (i.e. zexy) for some of them.
It would prioritize correctness and consistency over backwards compatibility.

* no libraries but the standard library loaded by default.

* the possibility to load distro profiles for compatibility with Pd-vanilla
and Pd-extended

* all of Pd-vanilla's objects as a separate 'vanilla' library.

It is really impressive, specially the way pd is embedded so
transparently inside it.

Is there some place we can find a demo example track?

This patch is what fixes it:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=2947822group_id=55736atid=478072

About the labels not showing up when the patch loads, that's because
you are saving the patch with a label that has spaces in it, which the
iemgui objects do not handle. In your patch, you could fix it by
using _ instead of spaces, like by using [l2s _].

This could be fixed if iemgui_save() escaped spaces with \ and removed
characters like ;,{}\ from the symbol. I'll try to implement that,
but I won't get to it tonight.

Steps to reproduce the error are:

1) Open patch in Pd
2) If patch loads with the toggles unlabelled, then right-clicking
the toggle and selecting 'Properties' works (however the receive
labels have not been [loadbang]'d. If patch loads with toggles

Re: [PD] mastering to vinyl live w/ pd

2012-12-19 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello,

I've done vinyl cutting from pd. One thing important is to have the low
frequency in phase.
It means you must reduce the stereo component under a certain frequency
(ex: 100Hz) and only keep mono.
If it's not mono (engraved horizontally) the stereo component (engraved
vertically) of the basses will make the groove jump up and down.
You can use my phasemeter abstractions (joined) to check your signal,
mono is vertical, stereo is horizontal.

Don't forget to use a RIAA filter to reduce the importance of basses as
well.

Nicolas

The main difference that I can think of is that Pd-extended uses a newer
version of Portaudio to get 64-bit support on all platforms.

There is two phenomenas:
- a cpu consumption that is decreasing when the window is moved. That
seems to be the new 0.43 GUI code, because this is happening even in
pd-vanilla

- a cpu difference between pd-x and vanilla

Maybe you could try building Pd-extended against the very latest portaudio
and the version of portaudio that Pd-vanilla 0.43 is using.
I'm not sure what is the easiest way to do that, but I may try to follow
guidelines if you can give me some.
Regarding Isaac's answer, I'm afraid this problem is concerning all osx
computers...

The new GUI code in 0.43 is almost all in the Wish process. On Mac OS
X, the Wish process will show up as 'Pd-0.43.4-extended-20121030' or
something like that. Not much changed in the 'pd' process itself in
terms of the GUI code. If you are seeing high CPU usage in the 'pd'
process and not the Wish process, then its unlikely that the new GUI
is the cause. On Mac OS X, you can use Shark.app to profile a running
app. Chances are you'll see what we've seen all along: most of this
CPU usage is Pd blocking with wait calls.
You're right, pd is taking all the cpu, Pd-0.43.4-extended-20121030 is
0%. From what I see with shark, the cpu is mostly used by a mach kernel
function : ml_set_interrupts_enabled and by dsp function from
DspFuncLib that all looks like usual effect ( processIIR, equalizer,
multibandcompressor, ...). I can send the report off list if you like.

Still how can you explain the cpu decrease when the window is moving?

Maybe you could try building Pd-extended against the very latest portaudio
and the version of portaudio that Pd-vanilla 0.43 is using.

I'm not sure what is the easiest way to do that, but I may try to follow
guidelines if you can give me some.

In the pd source tarball is a folder called 'portaudio'. Delete it, then
download the version you want to try from http://portaudio.com. When you unzip
it, you'll see a folder called 'portaudio', but that in your pd source, so its
like pd/portaudio/ as in pd/portaudio/src

ok, I don't have much time now, but I'll try as soon as I can.

Here are the test with different versions, first number is when opening
only the cpu meter, second number is when i move the cpu meter window,
third number is when i turn on the dsp, 4th number is when i turn off
the dsp, and fifth is when I turn the dsp on again:

cpu-meter / moving window / dsp on / dsp off / dsp on
Pd-0.43-1 : 25 / 12 / 25 / 1 / 29
Pd-0.43-4 : 25 / 12 / 27 / 1 / 29
Pd-0.43.1-extended-20120402 : 50 / 23 / 50 / 2 / 50
Pd-0.43.4-extended-20121022 : 50 / 23 / 50 / 2 / 50

Re: [PD] Two Pd instances with different startup options

2012-09-12 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello,

There is some other possibilities on osx,
To use two different preferences files, make sure you have no preference
file saved locally (in ~/Library/Preferences/org.puredata.pdextended.plist)
In this case Pd-extended search for its default preference file inside
itself in:

/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/org.puredata.pdextended.default.plist
So if you duplicate the application Pd-extended.app for example in
Pd-extended-audio.app, you'll have two different preference files.

Otherwise, you can save in a patch informations regarding the audio/midi
configuration, see for example

[get-audio-dialog]
from pdx, then you can launch two instance of pd (with command line)
with two different patches and settings.

best,
n

you woudn't want that behavior... hmm.

What about a -preffile command-line option ?

There are already many possibilities with some shell scripting (even on
a Mac) :

echo Starting the right Pd v-model

/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd -nomidi -noaudio -open
v-right-model.pd -send preset-file ../video-presets/right.coll;

echo Starting the left Pd v-model;

/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd -stderr -nomidi -noaudio -open
v-left-model.pd -send preset-file ../video-presets/left.coll;

But i agree a specific -preffile option would be great.

readanysf~
... couldn't create

How can i solve this problem ?

My configuration :
Ubuntu 12.04 and pd 0.43.2

Sorry for the confusion that IOhannes and me may have caused.

Fact is that packages in Ubuntu 12.04 are compiled with a gcc version,
that seems picky about correct linking order and thus Ubuntu 12.04 ships
a pd-readanysf package with a binary, that doesn't link at all against
the libraries it is dependent on, because the Makefile doesn't have the
linking order correct. Thus the error:
undefined symbol: bgav_select_track
The fix for this is already applied to the git repository where the
Debian packages sources are hosted, but no new package version was
released since. Thus it is still broken in Ubuntu 12.04.

AFAIK, Debian wheezy does not suffer from this problem.

As a temporary work-around for the Ubuntu problem, I put a fixed version
into my PPA. You can install it by issuing the following steps in a
terminal:

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:reduzierer/rdz-pd-extra+deps
$ sudo aptitude update
$ sudo aptitude install pd-readanysf

You may confirm that you're running the fixed version by doing:

$ aptitude show pd-readanysf | grep ^Version
which should show:
Version: 0.42-2~ppa0~precise

I hope this helped.

[PD] mp3amp~ crash pd on ubuntu 12.04

2012-06-20 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello all,

I have a problem here with mp3amp. It crashes pd when connecting to a
stream.
I can't use ogg for special reasons. Regarding the crash log, do you
have an idea of the origin of the problem?

the config is :
pd : 0.43.2
mp3amp unauthorised from svn (1 week ago)
ubuntu: 12.04
libmp3lame : 3.99.3+repack1-1
Is this an incompatibility between actual mp3lame and mp3amp? I know it
is building against specific headers located in the unauthorized directory.

OTOH mp3cast~ seems to work well.

Here is the log of the crash using valgrind:

participants.

The idea is to decentralize the development of Pd-extended as much as possible
so that individual developers have as much flexibility as possible without
slowing down the release cycle (its slow enough as it is...).

This is the basic overview of the process:

- A tag in SVN (i.e. tags/externals/pmpd
- a tarball on puredata.info/puredata
- make a release announcement and get some testers
- users can drop the pmpd libdir into the user-installed folder on their
system, and Pd-extended will use that pmpd over the included version
- then once you have a solid release, copy to the pd-extended release branch,
once it is setup

ok that's pretty clear.
that's a bit complex, i hope it won't prevent many people from adding
their project in pdx. But i understand the purpose.

i'm ok to be the pmpd maintener for pdx (cyrille is ok with that)
i'll try to do tagging, tarball, and everything soon to have an updated
release for pdX-0.44 :)

I just updated this doc with more info:
http://puredata.info/docs/developer/GettingIntoPdextended

thanks

The 0.43 release branch is closed to everything but bugfixes. I can't even
find the time to fix the remaining bugs as it is...

no problem, good luck with bugs!

FYI, I'll remain the Debian maintainer for pd-pmpd as long as it sticks to the
library template. Those updates are entirely based on the tarballs that get
posted to puredata.info/downloads.

ok cool,

Bravo Marco, a great improvement over the current state! Great dots :)
Some minor comments/ideas:
- could you post a screenshot of the footer?
is it possible as well to see a screenshot of some wiki page? or better
to post the css code here as we can apply it locally and browse everywhere.
- what do you think about making News and Recent Changes more similar
to the menu by adding an internal padding to the whole containing
element, and at the same time, decreasing the padding/margin of the
individual items?

A few humble ideas about the main page:
- the link to the Belorussian translation looks a bit orphaned, but I
don't know where else it could go

i agree, maybe it should move in the documentation section.
- seeing the same old screenshots on the opening page is a waste of
prime time space IMHO, because once you took a look at them you won't
use that part of the website anymore
- what do you people think about moving the current content of the
main page to a menu item like What is Pd? and filling the page with
more dynamic content? eventually, to fill with leads of News and
Recent Changes items, which could even eliminate the need of those
blocks (News is already on main page only, Recent Changes appear on
some sub pages but not on each).
That is a very good point ( even if it's not css...), there is no point
of having these blocks on every page. We can imagine a news listing and
a recent changes listing inside the div content, and make a about pd
section. ( like http://www.blender.org/ )
- if the main page ever gets populated with News et al, it would be
nice to have a cover picture however. Eventually rotating cover
pictures, possibly linked. Maybe a crazy idea, but wouldn't it make
sense to have a carousel-like thing showing up items from the
Exhibition on the main page?
this is very easy with vimeo, but the problem of the vimeo video group
is that it is not based on the same curation limit as for the exhibition
section, people can add their own videos.

- all i currently see when clicking Community is check out
DevelopmentWiki. Is this a temporary or very necessary state here?
when you click development you mean? This can be normally easily
changed but if Iohannes has done that there must be a reason.

other comments:
- I think it should be nice to have a large picture header, maybe
something like max has done for vimeo:

https://vimeo.com/groups/puredata
it will keep together the whole page.
- I find the main content div not large enough
- i find the navigation menu too padded, specially on the left

tanks for your work,

n

Re: [PD] Editing CSS style, make pd.info better? [WAS: puredata.info site design provocation]

2012-03-07 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello,

This layout is much better than the exisiting one. It should be applied
to the complete website and not only to the exhibition section (but I
think that's what you implied).

these comments are for the whole website:
* I think we don't need the site map / accessibility / contact div as
well.
* Maybe a prettiest title bar should be nice ( with a patch screenshot
or something)
* One problem I think, is also the width of the left column, when we
click on a section, there is often two lines fr a folder, maybe it
should be increase.

* Maybe we may simplify the footer as well?

If you want to test your css on other computer before to apply, don't
hesitate to send (maybe on the pdweb list)

Good job, cool!

 * How many people have ever clicked the print/email icons? My guess

 * Like the idea of a big fat download button (example attached but
don't use it as it's not mine).

Kind of hilarious to imagine how users will feel after finding Pd

The problem is that midi data is a position feedback for the control of a

I don't think the card is to blame cause the same card/patch/interface is
working well on win XP.

I have tested the same patch with Pd-extended 0.42.5 under mac osx lion and on

I have tested as well two midi-usb interface (a basic one and a motu micro

So it seems to me that the problem looks like Pd midi driver on osx.
I have tested to modify the audio latency, to change the MIDI latency, but that
gives me no better result.

Do you have an idea of where i can look, or a workaround i can find?

You'll also need the font library : ftgl,

my configure line here on osx 10.6 is:
./configure

--enable-fat-binary=i386 --with-ftgl-includes=/sw/include/
--with-ftgl-libs=/sw/lib/

Maybe it's just a unneeded slash at the end of your configure cause we
can see your compile line is including:

-I/Applications/Pd-0.43-0.app/Contents/Resources//src
so I'd try:

./configure --with-pd=/Applications/Pd-0.43-0.app/Contents/Resources
--enable-fat-binary=i386

Well, if compiled by doing:
./autogen.sh
./configure --with-pd=/Applications/Pd-0.43-0.app/Contents/Resources/

make

There are several errors and the build fails.

I am attaching the build log and the error messages from the console.

I'll try Hans' method and report back,

Hello Alex,

Yes the easiest way is to have two different instances of pd running and
to communicate (some) data values using netsend / netreceive on localhost.
Depending of what you do (is there some Gem?), it is usually said it
helps to have the audio process in one pd and the other only doing the
computing and displaying in Gem.
Having two instances of pd is trivial under linux (just start another pd
in the terminal), in osx i only know one way: you have to duplicate the
whole Pd app and rename it, in windows i don't know.

good luck

[PD] mp3amp segfault

2011-09-13 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello all,

I am using mp3amp~ on a server and I have a segfault everytime very
shortly (2-3 sec).

This problem never occurred to me...

pdextended is installed from the available package (without a few
dependencies)

my system is:
stream_test$ cat /etc/motd
Linux vps-1006620-2877.cp.tsukaeru.ne.jp 2.6.18-028stab069.6 #1 SMP Wed
May 26 18:10:06 MSD 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

You can find the log and backtrace of gdb down in this mail. It seems to
be a libmp3lame error.
The last error is always the same but i find nearly nothing about it on
the web.

Does someone has any clue on a way of solving that?
thanks in advance,

n

[PD] Gemwin help patch

2011-06-19 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello all,

I've seen the same gemwin help patch for many years, and i think it
needed an update so i've worked on the version attached.

My main concerns when designing it were:
- fit to the gem help patch template
- remove automatically sended parameters, as for example lighting 1.
That was very confusing for beginners: they create the gemwin object,
open the help patch, close it and then they can see nothing in their
window cause they have no light but lighting activated.
- explicit if the message must be send before or after the creation of
the gemwin.

- use only one gemwin object
- limit the number of hidden geos
I submit it to the community for critics, what is missing, what should
be changed, updated?

I have not change much of the text, maybe it needs also some editing.
I have drawn a moving object cause i think it can be useful for FSAA

Re: [PD] opengl performance on osX

2011-05-23 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello all,

I didn't had time to make heavy testing.
But I tried some things today and it seems finally I manage to go
further than 50% of the GPU.

You can see the evolution of my graph here if you want:
http://nim.on.free.fr/data/gem_perf.png
It is with different testing : changing resolution / frame / options
Auto-hiding the dock doesn't seems to change a thing, and sending
fullscreen before creating the window did not significantly change the
GPU usage.

I'll try to do some more professional testing with Cyrille tomorrow.
What is the best way to test the GPU usage, drawing numerous squares?
There is also many different parameters to monitor and i can display
some others if you prefer.

The tool i am using is a developper tool from apple : OpenGl Driver Monitor

there is certainly a limitation somewhere on osX preventing
application to use full performance of the hardware.

so, you applications are slower, but the interface will always be
smooth...

Yep :)
It is useful because you can see in the console the masses created with
their id and links created between two masses with their id. So it is
useful to debug.

you have a [print( message that prints directly in the console.

Re: [PD] Strange bug between GEM and MSD ?

2011-01-22 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello jack,

Strange bug indeed. Can you try to recompile msd following the
instructions in this thread:

http://g.org/pipermail/flext/2010-September/000108.html
And please can you send a simplified version of your patch to see if i
can reproduce this here.

I never had such a bug... and i've used msd with draw lines on circles
in many occasions.

All the best

Hello,

All works fine at the beginning.
When i send [draw line] to [circle], that change the behavior of the
masses and links in MSD.
Did you have a similar problem ?

2011-01-19 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

this is not good at all...
the last message infosL gives an actual snapshot of the internal state
of msd.

and the problem here is it shows there are only two masses :
the number 0 and the number 29.
but what is crazy is the output at the beginning shows there are all
created, and the number of the mass is incremental starting from 0, so
it's like it creates the 30 masses, delete the masses 1 to 28 and then
try to link them,
or it creates the first one, and then the second one is only changing
numbers...

can you give the output of this simpler patch?
i woud like also to have a look at the source code used in puredyne but
can't manage to find it

do you see a msd.h somewhere in your distro?
if so please send it as well

Hey Nicolas,

Yes, very strange behaviour indeed.

As [msd] comes 'pre-installed' there doesn't appear to be a msd.h file.

I did look at trying to build msd as a possible work-around, though I
must admit it seems a little beyond my experience. I got stuck when
attempting to install flex when I realised that there is no source

This is not to complain about puredyne - it's a marvellous distro.

but what is crazy is the output at the beginning shows there are
all created, and the number of the mass is incremental starting
from 0, so it's like it creates the 30 masses, delete the masses 1
to 28 and then try to link them,
or it creates the first one, and then the second one is only
changing numbers...

can you give the output of this simpler patch?

so the example I gave was everything that wasn't a 1 in that second
would be spat out as a zero.

is that a bit more clear?

I am doing this as I am receiving data from someone else's processing
sketch that is sending 1s if a certain condition is met. However, In
this processing sketch there are no zeros being sent if this condition
is no longer met, so It is up to me to decipher if whether or not this
condition is true any longer.

It confuses me quite a bit too, which is why i came to the list.

hope I am clear here, and thanks a bunch for taking the time to take a

Even though the base unit of [metro]'s time is the millisecond, it
doesn't mean that a millisecond is somehow any kind of building
block of pd's concept of time. You can have fractional delays of
your choice, within the limits of the float32 format and of the
manner of writing it (not too many decimals...).

Well, actually, [metro] has an artificial lower limit at 1.00,
but if you imitate [metro] using [delay] connected to itself, you
don't have that limitation.

In the light of this, the question doesn't make much practical
sense. But suppose you still want it. You have to put a [delay 1]
so that at the same time you set the 1, you set a clock that
will set the 0 after 1 ms of time.

Alternately, you can have a [metro 1] connected to a counter that
loops at 1000.

Re: [PD] Real time Network Traffic geolocation patch

2010-09-26 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

 cool,

the data outlet is actually working, it was just to set the data limit...
Everything seems to work fine!
on osx, you can avoid launching pd as root by changing the read access
to the interface:

sudo chmod a+r /dev/bpf*
there is some explanations on capture right for this software that use
the same lib:

http://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup/CapturePrivileges

good work, it seems very stable.
maybe having a possibility to switch the data output to ASCII or list of
int instead of an hexa symbol could be a good thing, but it's only
optional as it can be done in pd.

(in c it may be faster)
thx,

n

hacking the makefile in pdgst/src replacing -shared by -bundle

[PD] pdgst on mac

2010-09-20 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

 Hello list,

I'd like to experiment the pdgst lib, it seems very powerful!
I am on osx and before I try to compile everything, is there someone
that has already build the lib on osx 10.5 or 10.6?

Having some help or a binary would be very helpful.

In the other case are there any indication for compiling the sources?
I can't find any on the pdgst svn.

Thanks in advance

Hello Hans,

Thanks for the return of the msd objects in pd-extended!
I can create an msd object in an new patch but neither an msd2D or an msd3D.
However, when i load the help patch of msd (using the right-click on the
object) the help patch creates normally these two objects and then i can
create them in my patch.

Any idea of what is going on?

could you try to produce a run it in a debugger (gdb), and broduce a
backtrace, like:

$ gdb pd -stderr mp3cast~-test.pd
(gdb) run
...
(gdb) backtrace

could be.

anyhow, the backtrace doesn't show so much yet, since all the debugging
symbols have been stripped from mp3cast~.

in order to prevent this, you probably have to edit the Makefile of
mp3cast~ and remove the line:
strip --strip-unneeded $*.pd_linux

then do make clean make

and rerun the backtrace

[PD] pd lua error

2010-02-05 Thread Nicolas Montgermont

Hello all,

I'm trying to make pd-lua work here.

I compiled pd-lua without problem with makefile.static.
When I launch the lua-help.pd directly in the src/ subdirectory, that
didn't worked.

this directory contains both the patch, the lua.pd_darwin and the pd.lua
I tried to compile and run with Pd-0.40.3-extended,
Pd-0.41.4-extended-rc2 and Pd-0.42.5-extended20091214 without results,

here is the pd log for Pd-0.42.5-extended20091214 :

lua 0.5 (GPL) 2008 Claude Heiland-Allen claudiusmaxi...@goto10.org
lua: compiled for pd-0.42 on Feb 5 2010 14:14:46
error: lua: error loading `pd.lua': canvas_open() failed
error: lua: loader will not be registered!
lua
... couldn't create
luax hello
... couldn't create
hello
... couldn't create

Did I miss something?
I used pdlua on this computer two years ago, so maybe there are some
stuffs i need to update.
I have lua-5.1.3 that seems to work (make test outputs: Hello world,
from Lua 5.1!)

Thanks for your help,

Nicolas

To start there is this app from chris Mccormix that allows you to
control pd patches from your ds:

I don't know if it's maintained though.

Since Pd already is, imagine a little one you can carry on your

are great, but we all know they can't do what pd can.
Imagine a little vanilla, you just mess with the objects on the
