 To Pd list,

I got my Pi in the mail today (only 2 or 3 weeks after ordering it I think -
they're starting to catch up with the enormous demand!) and can report what
I found works and what not.

I loaded the Raspian distro (the one everyone suggests) and following the
 blog on :
 http://log.liminastudio.com/programming/running-puredata-on-the-raspberry-pi

 just typed

 pi@raspberrypi ~ $ sudo bash
 root@raspberrypi:/home/pi# apt-get update
 root@raspberrypi:/home/pi# apt-get install puredata

and then pd ... sort of... runs right away. I had to fool with some
 glitches though:

 1. Pd is version 0.43-2 which doesn't yet know to try to promote itself
to real-time if it's not root. (This is only fixed in 0.44 which might not
make it to Raspian for quite some time.) A rather bad workaround exists:
still as root (i.e., after the sudo step) type

 root@raspberrypi:/home/pi# chmod 4775 /usr/bin/puredata

This might be a security risk (if anyone breaks into your Pi they might be
able to design an exploit to get Pd to promote them to root) but I can't
say I'm worried about that. (Speaking of security though, since mine is
networked and ssh-enabled, I did change the password :)

I'm having no trouble running Pd via ssh from another computer. The pi
user is already in group audio in the Raspian distro. X windows
forwarding is also turned on by default - so the only detail you have
to check is whether your ssh is rinngin with -X set on the originating
machine. I did notice that one can't run pd inside sudo and still get
X forwarding; you have to stay as the pi user.

Then about audio. I can indeed verify that the built-in analogue audio is
wretched -- in two ways. First, it's not even functional (and LOUDLY non-
functional :) until you se the latency to at least 40 msec (it's 25 by
default in Pd on linux.) Second, it's bad anyway. To my ears the alsa
play program and Pd's test-tone sound equally bad. There's a modulation that
is sort of as if a sample out of every 1024 is getting dropped or doubled.
You can hear the modulation change as the pitch of the test tone goes up and
 down.

So I pulled out my cheapo USB headset from Gigaware and, with input turned
off, was able to play the test tone with latency down to 10 msec, and got a
clean-sounding tone out. Then, getting overconfident, I turned on audio
input and although the sound came through it has hiccups and my interface
froze (had to unplug the headphones to get Pd to bail :)

So things are sort of working but there's still some tuning to do... I'll
probably have more to report over the weekend.

 cheers
 Miller

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] gem 0.93.1

2011-08-31 Thread mark edward grimm
hello

i am getting something similar with Pd-0.43.1-extended-20110831.app
(my first attempt with Pd-0.43.1-extended).

for me though, when clicking on the App icon the PD window briefly
appears and the PD dispersal. I then removed the Gem folder from extra
in the Package and PD-Extended-0.43.1 appears fine, obviously with the
message Gem: can't load library in the console...

I then ran extended from command line, eg:

/Applications/Pd-0.43.1-extended-20110831.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd
-stderr -d 3 -verbose

and all works just fine (Gem included)

question is: why when clicking on App i get an immediate crash (is it
a crash?). Is there a way to log the crash by clicking on the App
since running from terminal seems fine?

idk

just thought i would let you guys know if the issue.

BTW I am on 10.7.1 ... could that be the issue? Although I do remember
now a month or so ago trying an older build of extended 0.43.0 and
getting a pretty similar result. PD window immediately goes away.

The web page use HTML5 x-webkit-speech on Google Chrome and it's a
complement to kiku since the accuracy of the English acoustic model is not
yet ready for dictation. so kiku = single word recognition and the web page
 a complement for dictation.

yeah i figured it out. pd just needs to be started from the
terminal. then all works well!

also you need to know that kiku is single word recognition. meaning if you
speak a sentence it will output a single word (with a very bad score).

yeah figured that which I can make works for what im doing (i
think) although full dictation or semi-dictation would be more
ideal

i am surprise that it's working on ubuntu 11.04

seems to work!!! idk

as for your problem, kiku have an option to recognize only the words if, in
your example, pd-extended is opened causing kiku to restart his engine (thus
portaudio). that might be your problem (i cannot reproduce this problem
 here, ubuntu 10.10).

you change this behavior in Configuration:
 Dictionary: Match V2C (uncheck)

also you need to know that kiku is single word recognition. meaning if you
speak a sentence it will output a single word (with a very bad score).

remove ~/.kiku folder to reset the installation.

For kiku, i'm using Julius voice recognition (can be compile on OS X) and

I don't know simpleOSC but this code/description looks like your '1',
by the time it is received by Pd is untyped(?), and there fore
numberbox does not know how to deal with it.   Did you try [print]?
You may want to pass that output through [sprintf %i] or something
similar (perhaps just [trigger float] will do?) to 'cast' it into
proper datatype.  I don't have pd handy to test but this should set
 you on the right track.

[PD] synchronizing a seq-textfile using c_seqplay to a metro

2010-08-23 Thread mark edward grimm
hello

I am using the seq_conversion in c_seqplay from rjdj lib to convert a
midi file to a seq-textfile. I am aware that the tempo $1 is
relative to the tempo in the textfile. How do I get that tempo from
qlist in c_seqplay? Ultimately I want to get the tempo from qlist and
convert so it is relative, using [tempo $1{, to synchronize to a
master metro. Any idea how this is done? Synchronizing a seq-textfile
using c_seqplay generated from a midi file to a metro? I have read
docs but can't figure it out

yuv420p -vcodec mjpeg -s 640x480 -sameq -f mov -y

44100 /Users/megrimm/Desktop/youtube2pd/footage/test.wav')
os.system('normalize-audio /Users/megrimm/Desktop/youtube2pd/footage/test.wav')

so I am assuming its a path problem with your script? since it
downloads and cleans. although why would it be able to clean the
downloaded file from '+savepath+'/footage/' but not able to find to
transcode?

migt be some factors too big (marker size is given in
millimeters, so i assume the translation will also be set in
 mm.

I saw there's an option to use quaternion output for
rotations (I'm not very familiar with that) or normal
output which is is probably a 3d vector for translation and
 a rotation matrix.

 hi, mark

I did some quick changes which should let you display
 something.

the gemwin is now 10 times bigger than usual, and the far
clipping plane beyond which everything disappears is set
to 3000, you might want to adjust that.

to me it seems like it outputs millimeters as unit - but
maybe it's no sensible unit at all. the size of the cube 40
is actually a 80x 80x80 cube which matches the default
 marker size.

if you plan to use artoolkit as an augmented reality device
you'll have to measure your isight camera somehow and adjust
your virtual camera in the gemwin to match your real
camera's parameters. it's also possible to do it without
measurements, but it can be an endless gefrickel (I
realized that at a point and then did the measurements which
made everything more comfortable for my tracking system).
it's not that difficult, but my experience was that I had to
carefully note everything and make some drawings, showing
the relations between the real camera's angles and and the
 virtual camera.

maybe check some computer graphics books for details on
that. if they are to mathematical - throw it away and get
another one, this stuff can also be explained in an easy to
 understand manner...

 cheers
 martin

hi martin,

sorry i was wrong in stating that i was using:

pd-extended 41.4 release on osx 10.6.2

I am actually using the latest autobuild off hans site so:

Pd version 0.42.5-extended GEM: ver: 0.92.1

with this version of extended i get:

[pix_artoolkit]: ARToolKit support by Shigeyuki Hirai

when loading pix_artoolkit rather than:

error: [pix_artoolkit]: compiled without ARToolKit support!

on extended 0.41.4 so im assuming something was fixed (obviously :) maybe from
out of the last discussion from last year? i cant find thread because it seems
like the list is down again...

your on linux no?

its right outlet), I'd be interested in what camera,

i left the printed hiro test pattern at the uni so ill give you some data
printouts tomorrow morn when i get in...

I will take a look at your new patch you sent too!

 hi again.

now I compiled the current gem release 0.92.1 from
sourceforge (I could not find pix_artoolkit in svn)

it contains some changes compared to my older version of
pix_artoolkit source code, but unfortunately again no
markers are recognized with my setup (pix_artoolkit does't
output anything on its right outlet.)

I also had a look at the cube part of the help patch you
sent me and also the sources of pix_artoolkit. It seems it
outputs 7 values which are: the translation (position) as a
 vector x y z, an other vector 'x y z' which is the direction
of the detected rotation axis (the rotation normal) and a
rotation angle around this axis. so the draw cube part of
your help patch should work just fine if everything else
(marker detection, marker recognition) works. maybe the size
of the cube (40) is too big to see anything or the cube is
only drawn behind the video. i changed that, see
 attachment.

when i was working with tracking data in general I scaled
everything to usual gem units, so that for example a desired
range of 0 to 40 cm went from 0 to 4. so it fits in the
 usual gemwin for quick tests.

I have no idea which units the external will output  -
choose a smaller size for the marker than 80, until you can
 see something useful.

my assumptions about the output of pix_artoolkit from
yesterday are completely wrong (there's no matrix output) -
so the patch I sent you before is pretty useless - sorry for
 that.

if pix_artoolkit is working for you (outputting anything on
its right outlet), I'd be interested in what camera,
resolution, version of Gem you are using. Some output of the
external would also help me improving the help patch - if
 necessary.

 cheers
 martin

Re: [PD] midifile ... in reverse

2009-11-02 Thread mark edward grimm
hello,

rj-library, the help file for [c_seqplay] contains an
 example how to convert a
midi file to a text file, that [qlist] can read (using
 Cyclon's [seq] instead
of [midifile]). Once you have the qlist-file, you can
 reverse it using for
example the tac command in Linux/OS-X - tac is the
 opposite of cat.

yeah this is nice. I will have to try it out this week when i get the chance

This actually isn't too hard if some external tools are
 allowed.

yeah i have been using 'gnmidi' on windows to reverse midi files and do some
other manipulations on them. also there is an interesting keykit webapp that
does some nice stuff (http://www.nosuch.com/tjt/tunetoys.html) ... ableton also
has added some nice midi functionality.

i was trying to figure out how to do some of these things (reversing, random
tick sequence) directly in PD with midifile but i get a lot of hangs...

Actually doing it might be difficult though - MIDI
 files have
variable-length fields, so you probably have to decode
 *all* of it into
some other format or data structure before you start
 playing from the
  end.

... with this in mind. so, yeah, the midi - text file / qlist stuff looks more
promising...

Thanks for the responses!

As qlist-files encode delta times or times between events,
 loading this

 midi file backwards.

As you noted, the notoffs then happen before the noteoffs,
 so some additional
tweaking may be wanted, either to the file format or to
 your Pd player logic.

 Jose,

Since no one else has answered your question so far, and
since I had to find an answer to the same question only a
few weeks ago, this is what I know about the current state
 of development of Percolate:

You can find the different versions of Percolate at
 http://www.music.columbia.edu/PeRColate/

From there, there is a link to a Pd version of Percolate by
Olaf Matthes. This version, however, is no longer available.
From what I've heard - I was not around when this happened -
Olaf seems to have decided to no longer develop for Pd after
 a dispute with other developers.
Unfortunately, no one has stepped up to the plate to create
 a new port.

So it seems that right now you have two options; find a way
to do your project without the Percolate objects, or move to
 Max/MSP ...

 Hope this helps.

 hi list,

i've thrown together this tiny gem patch which makes a
 timelapse slideshow.
i have encountered a few issues with it.

 configuration:
 Pd version 0.41.4-extended-20090223
 GEM: ver: 0.91.3 'tigital'
 GEM: compiled: Feb 23 2009
 OS X 10.5.6

 the issues:
 1. pix_write doesn't interpret the file path correctly. it
seems it can't understand relative paths at all.

 2. pix_write accepts a message [file file
[type](. it creates files with a .jpg ending if the
type is 0. But in reality it still is a TIFF. no matter
 what value you write.

 3. pix_write creates files with an acending number 0...
this conflicts with how other objects like pix_multiimage do
 it (0...9)

just submitted that to the gem bugtracker.

 and the patch:
put this to / because of the bug in pix_write to make it
work. put a folder called frames beside it.

beware: this patch will also eat up all the memory and will
crash pd. this isn't pix_writes problem though - i'll try to
find out why this is now.

that looks pretty elegant and will give it a shot on linux machine... BTW was
wondering though if there are any plans to implement gridflow in extended? it
would benefit our freshmen students for ease of installation/use on osx
machines they now all run and i would love to demo this nerv_vid example...

ToonLoop, I immediately thought about this music video made
 in 1986:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMylfkSDKV0

awesome! i dont remember ever seeing that one before not even in the '80's!!

Should be fairly simple. GridFlow has a nervous_video.pd
patch that shows how to store a bunch of frames in a big
grid... for 32 frames of 240 rows of 320 columns of 3
channels, you just make a grid of size (32 240 320 3) and
 that's all.

[PD] shell .... again....

2009-03-08 Thread mark edward grimm

i have been trying to use shell... works OK in linux but in osx it just
crashes.

i am just wondering if this thread went anywhere:

http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-list/2009-01/067700.html

i have it in a bunch of patches now and would love to use it more ... if it had
more cross-compatibility (osx) because i tend to work with others + other os's.

maybe i should just change to pdlua as frank suggested? or might shell someday
get fixed?

not sure what to do

cheers

what are the symptoms of the crashes? does pd just quit
 with a segfault,
or does [shell] makes pd hang?

yeah its really weird

i get:

the application pd quit unexpectedly

then i can ignore or relaunch...

either choice PD still runs in the background. the ignore or relaunch seems
to be only a nag screen that does not do anything... but at the same time
creates the situation that make PD unusable...

anyone else with he same?

maybe its leopard thing?

Often, on MacOSX, when 'Pd-extended' quit,
 'pd' stay. You have to

r u saying this might be a normal thing for pd-extended? for the most part no
(actually on ubuntu 8.10 pd-extended recently i have to xkill fairly often?) on
osx... but sometimes, more rarely, yes.

not sure what you are asking though... is this a general problem or an issue
related to [shell] still?

Re: [PD] streaming audio and video in Linux

2009-03-04 Thread mark edward grimm

so i did get this working on linux with mencoder + pdp_rawin using code:

#! /bin/sh
rm /tmp/pipe
mknod /tmp/pipe p
mencoder -nosound -ovc raw -of rawvideo -vf scale,format=rgb24
mms://ph.wm.live05.pscdn.net/00302597_live12?MSWMExt=.asf -o /tmp/pipe

although i am finding this might be inefficient having to convert colorspace
from yuv - rgb - yuvthe only way i have been able to get this to work is
to do this. i am not sure why, admitting i am limited in my understanding of
colorspace.

From mencoder i get something like:

Decoder is capable of YUV output (flags 0x1b)
VDec: vo config request - 320 x 240 (preferred colorspace: Packed YUY2)
VDec: using Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
Movie-Aspect is undefined - no prescaling applied.
[swscaler @ 0x883e3d0]No accelerated colorspace conversion found
[swscaler @ 0x883e3d0]SwScaler: using unscaled yuv420p - rgb24 special
converter

then with pdp_rawin i have to send messages:

[tmp/pipe(
[bitmap/rgb/320x240(

then i have to convert back to yuv using:

[pdp_convert image/YCrCb/*]

and thats the only way i can get it to work.

i have tried something like:

[pdp_rawin tmp/pipe bitmap/yuv (or even yv12)/320x240]

with accompanying altered mencoder script with nothing but a static, f'ed up
image.

i am not complaining too much because i am pretty happy this is just working in
general... i am just looking to make it a little more efficient and i am a
little confused over all the yuv/yv12 stuff that is going on and why i have to
convert to rgb and back to yuv just to get it to work right - with the
understanding pdp/yuv is the fastest and most efficient.

BTW the piping stuff is really killer! although i have only been able to get it
to work on linux... osx gives me a wicked big file that continuously increases
in size as the stream is converted. linux just makes a 0k tmp/pipe that is very
nice. i guess this is just a mencoder thing on osx obviously.

thanks!
m

yeah good deal...

i am giving it a shot without much luck. i would have to 'dump raw input' on
vlc (i think) otherwise i just get a big huge file. though this method does not
seem to work well...here on osx now but will try on linux when i have access to
my system on monday.

just tried the VLC = pdp_icedthe~ thing again. have it working and connecting
then i get:

pdp_icedthe~ : headers too long.

from a previous thread i take it this is an osx thing? or? another issue
maybe?

Thanks!

 pdp_live~/pdp_mp4live~ are abandonned
and are based on very old versions of ffmpeg
and mpeg4ip, which are not in use anymore...
the code stays here for historical reasons,
and you can compile them using --with-ffmpeg
 and --with-mpeg4ip respectively..

the way now to do streaming is to do ogg/theora
 streaming on an icecast server,
 all technical about these solutions
and pd patches in the giss.tv project wiki :

Somebody was just asking me about options for
 streaming
  audio and video in Pd-extended. I wouldn't
 mind help
with the answer. Here's what I have gathered
 so far.

  Audio:

 * streamin~ and streamout~ --- but the help
 patches
  don't seem to
work in Linux. Seems to work ok in windows.
 * netsend~ and netreceive~ --- not provided in
  pd-extended and
seemed a bit flaky when I tried them before.
 * mp3streamin~ and mp3streamout~ --- help patch
 missing
  in
pd-extended but seem to work ok outside of
 Windows.
 * mp3cast~ and friends: seems to work ok if you
 have a
  shoutcast
   server...

  Video:

 * I couldn't find anything in Gem to stream
 video.
  Did I miss it? I
   was wondering if using pix_pix2sig~,
 streaming as
  audio, then
   pix_sig2pix~ might work.
 * in pdp/pidip there's pdp_i and pdp_o. I
 didn't
  find help patches
   for these in pd_extended
 * also in pdp/pidip there's some
 other's
  pdp_mp4live~ etc. I suspect
the ffserver-based ones don't work in
 pd-extended.
  Not sure on the
   others.

For either audio or video maybe there's a way
 to send
to vlc through the stdin or stdout, then let vlc
 do the
  streaming?

no, pdp_icedthe~ can receive a stream

ah thats right thanks!

we will not try to support an .asx/proprietary format,

understandable yeah i want to hijack someone else's stream - it just
happens to be in .asx!!!

i wonder if there is a method for real-time transcoding? from asx to ogg?

[PD] Transcoding Stream in VLC = pd = pdp_icedthe~

2009-02-27 Thread mark edward grimm

OK. I was looking into transcodeing a live asx stream so i could use it in PD
with pdp_icedthe~

my VLC m3u file looks like this:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:0,live12.asx
#EXTVLCOPT:sout=#transcode{vcodec=theo,vb=800,scale=1}:duplicate{dst=std{access=http,mux=ogg,dst=localhost:8080}}
mms://ph.wm.live05.pscdn.net/00302597_live12?MSWMExt=.asf

can anyone tell if i am doing something wrong? it all runs fine in VLC and
seems like its transcoding yet I get :

pdp_icedthe~ : connecting to url=http://localhost:8080/
pdp_icedthe~ : connecting to host=localhost port=8080 mountpoint=
error: pdp_icedthe~: connection failed!

pdp_icedthe~ : connection thread 0 launched

i probably dont need the localhost part... but either way it does not work.
apache is installed and running. is there something maybe with port i should do?

i guess i just cant tell where I am, or if, i am missing something...

im on ubuntu 8.10 now... but will be on osx 10.5 this weekend. right now it
does not work on either.

maybe someone has done this already?

Thanks
mark

[PD] PD + Digi 003

Hey,

Does anyone have any experience with the Digi 003? We have two of these things
in our labs and every time i try to use Jack with it I get:

Error:

Please check preferences or retry after a system reboot.

I have a demo of audio hijack that uses soundflower and seems to work fine if
i choose soundflower as my pd output. i can not choose the digi 003 directly
from pd?

not sure if this is a jack problem? anyone get this this to work with jack/pd?

i know these things are a pain in the ass. digidesignbite me on this one!

You don't actually load a base image into
pix_background, you send a [reset( message to the
[pix_background] object and it takes a snapshot of
whatever's in front of the connected camera (or incoming
video stream). Then it compares all incoming frames with
that snapshot and outputs anything that's different
between the two. The right inlet sets the threshold and
takes an RGB value, so you will have to adjust this to
reduce inevitable noise and artifacting. I have attached a
very basic version of this patch I've described. I
don't have a cam attached to this computer and don't
have the time to test it, but it should work.

 I've triedpix_background and can't see how two
images are fed in (but it's late and I need to come back

pix_chroma_key without much success but I'll have a look

...but im sure there is someone that knows something better optimized for

also thinking about setting up a rear projection in my front window with some

[PD] Artoolkit

2008-10-29 Thread mark edward grimm
Hello,

I am just wondering if there has been any progress on Artoolkit (help-files,
compiling on osx, etc.) the last thread on this I found was:

http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-list/2008-05/062513.html

and then the conversation seemed to end. And i still get this:

error: [pix_artoolkit]: compiled without ARToolKit support!
... you might be able to track this down from the Find menu.

When creating object. Is that supposed to be?

Thanks!

 hi mark,

  error: [pix_artoolkit]: compiled without ARToolKit

i really think pix_artoolkit is not working. it can load a
 marker, init
the camera, but it doesn't report the position of the
 marker. BUT i know
that Johannes Taelman managed to make it work on windows...

still if you want to try it out (or sort it out):

this is how i did it:

Re: [PD] mrmr + iphone + pd

2008-09-07 Thread mark edward grimm
well after banging my head against the wall for a couple hours late yesterday
afternoon i found the trouble to be with the 'pipeline' object in my patch...

it also was odd that i couldn't connect prior to firing up the interface
builder (mrmrIB) app. once i did that that mrmr auto-connected upon launch
whether mrmrIB was launched or not.

also i noticed that mrmr does not seem to retain its port settings - i have to
re-type it in every time the app is launched.

once its running it controls my patch just fine and fairly fast!

 I would be nice to
 know what you cook up.

just using it as demo for my students right now. all incoming freshman received
a free 'ipod touch' with the purchase of a mac - so they all have the means to
experiment now! fun fun

load all movies in 'folder $0'
unload all movies
load all movies in 'folder $0'
unload all movies
load all movies in 'folder $0'

so on and so on..

The first thing that happens when you load a movie is all
 previous memory is
cleared. There is no way to 'clear' memory because
 it is always done
 anyway.

 Hi all,
Here's a Spotlight importer for Pd (and AFAIK .pat)
 files.

Starting with tonight or tomorrow's autobuild,
 installing it (just
double-click it) will let Spotlight look inside your Pd
 patches.
Also, a beneficial side-effect of a necessary change to
 Pd-extended's
bundle means that Pd-patches are now Quick Look-enabled
 (don't get
/too/ excited, it is only the plaintext representation, but
 still
extremely handy). And after the importer itself gets
 enveloped by
Pd-extended's bundle, it will just work (no
 installation needed).

This version just indexes the entire text. In the future I
 could add
specific metadata keys to correspond to Pure Data
 Objects, Pure
Data Messages, Pure Data Comments, and
 Pure Data [declares],
which could then be used to construct complex Spotlight
 queries (but I
just learned enough Obj-C to get this far tonight so give
 me a while :
 ) ).

 Hans, apparently placing it in
 Pd-extended.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight will make it
 magically
start working the first time Pd is dragged out of its .dmg.
  I don't
have a clue about building this dynamically in the
 autobuilds, but
since it is a Universal Binary and OS X only is it cool to
 add
 statically?

 enjoy
 Luke

(by the way, you'll know you have the right Pd-extended
 when running
 mdls -name kMDItemContentType a-patch.pd gives
 org.puredata.pd-patch rather than
 dyn.ah62d4rv4ge81a3a or
 similar)___

Re: [PD] Teaching Pd to Children

2008-06-13 Thread mark edward grimm
Hi Kyle,

This is great! I have always thought PD was a great was to teach children the
bridge between math and art

I actually once gave my children (2 girls, 6 and 8 at the time) a brief PD
tutorial and found them to be very creative and intuitive with the limited
objects that I exposed them to.

I just showed them how to create objects, messages, bangs and number boxes and
then how to patch them together - all through the menu, no key shortcuts. Then
I gave them a few of the simplest object names (osc~, metro, random, dac~) and
taught them a little randomization synth and how to create sounds with a number
box + osc~ all very simple stuff. Then I introduced the math objects (+, -,
*, /) - nothing too fancy. And that was it for lesson One!

They played with this for a couple hours and built a really interesting patch
that made some fun sound... they loved it and I found that with just a few
simple tools children can really begin to experiment in different ways than we
can - maybe they do not have the same institutional exposure of 'the right way'
and 'the wrong way'? I have found that any method children can utilize to learn
through personal exploration and ENJOY learning is the 'right' way to learn...

After a bit you can see when they start to become a little bored and that is
when you can begin to introduce new concepts and objects to keep their
attention...

Worked for me!

This is just my personal case-study. It would be interesting if you documented
your experiences in a research study maybe? PD and primary school education? It
would be a good study for 'Studies in Art Education' or a similar education
based journal

cheers

I'm teaching a 1 month Summer school session for K-8
 grade students and
would like to include Pd for a mathematics learning tool. I
 am wondering if
anyone else has done something similar, or has any links to
 DSP/math related
materials that would be suitable for this age group. Also,
 if anyone is
sharing their lesson plans for Pd beginners, I would love

that I might be able to adapt for my students.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as kids often hate
 Summer school and
I want to make this a fun activity for them.

Hey Luke,

Too bad you lost it! Happens to the best of us!

Was it this xcode tutorial you used?

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/Conceptual/MDImporters/Concepts/WritingAnImp.html

I will take a look at this because for me this would be extremely useful.
Probably will not get a chance to take a look until next week though.

One thing - if indexing plain-text will it index everything in a patch? can it
exclude stuff like #N canvas 540 610 118 149 10;, #X obj 8 63, #X obj 10
64, etc. or does it even matter do you think

Yeah i was looking into this last night and thought hey someone on the pd list
MUST have done this already... guess i was right!

Amusingly I did exactly this, and then forgot to tell
 anybody about it
or upload it anywhere, then I reformatted and lost it :P.

It was /extremely/ useful at the time (indexing comments,
 etc, which I
could then take advantage of with impromptu tagging and
 TODO etc), so
I've been planning to do it again. I just followed a
 tutorial
somewhere; if you do some googling for spotlight

 should pull it up.

I'll do it again if you have any trouble.

2008-05-29 Thread mark edward grimm
Hi Max,

Coincidently i tried this last night (or night before)
and got the exact same error - pd cr.singletons.
Actually i think there was a hyphen in the error so it
was pd-cr.singletons

The error occurred using the latest autobuild
2008-05-28 for mac intel.

I then got an older build i was using prior to this
(2008-05-24) and everything worked fine - no error.

did something change in the autobuild maybe between
05-24 and 05-28 maybe that would give an error like
this?

Also all patches loaded into 'creator' were broken and
gave a simalar error for me...

Re: [PD] http, html and textfiles

2008-05-02 Thread mark edward grimm
hello,

If we WERE going to use just pd for longer text type
processing, what optimization methods would be
recommended?

Is there a particular font that PD handles better than
others?
Would it be wise to strip text of backslashes,
spaces, commas as im assuming from your post?
Can PD grab a random 'line' from a text file so as not
to have to load the whole thing?

Thanks
mark

Yep: Don't use Pd for text processing.

Pd is good at many things, but it's not good at
 parsing and modifying
larger amounts of text. AFAIK there still is no
 garbage collection for
 unused symbols (Pd's strings), it's
 overcomplicated to deal with
 certain characters (backslashes, spaces, commas,
 ...) when they should
not be interpreted by Pd etc.

What I would recommend is to do your text processing
 in a different
language. Many (scripting) languages that are great
 with text can be
used inside of Pd: Lua, Python, Java, Scheme, etc.
 Most of these also
include or can be extended easily with nice web
 browsing tools (CURL,
Socket, system(wget) ...). In the end you can do
 both the browsing and
all processing in one place and then only need to
 feed the results over
to Pd in a format, Pd can handle with more elegance
 than it can handle
 large amounts of text.

Of course it depends a bit on how complex your
 project is, so you may
get away with pure Pd as well, but IMO it's a better
 use of Pd to
externalize the text processing to a language better
 suited.

[PD] Number of Loaded Lines in a Text File Read by MSGFILE

2008-05-02 Thread mark edward grimm

number of lines in a text file loaded into 'msgfile'
OR equivalent object. The object seems to do
everything but that!! Am i missing something right in
front of me? I just need to know the number of lines
in a text file that i load...

Thanks!!!

BTW 'msgfile-help.pd' is missing in my pd-extended

2008-05-02 Thread mark edward grimm
hey thanks on the tip, i will try that out...

 html know about fonts,
 it's all pure ascii text.

oh yes i know this. i meant an optimized font for when
the text is in pd/gem window... i guess it wouldn't
really matter though as long as the loaded font wasn't
too complicated.

Thanks!

If you have pd extended you can use the
 mrpeach/tcpclient to retrieve the
page and the mrpeach/str object to snip the data on
 any character or
position. You have to enter things like spaces and
 backslashes as their
decimal equivalent though. An important pair is 10
13 for CR LF. It works
better if you are accessing simple web pages,
 especially if you are printing
out the characters as they arrive. Neither http or
 html know about fonts,
 it's all pure ascii text.

you don't have to use Pd, you could just do
 wget [URL] myfile.txt

you can run this from within Pd (using [shell]) or
 create a small server
that communicates with Pd using netsend/netreceive
 (or whatever you
prefer). i have posted examples on how to the latter
 on this list before
 (so see the archives).
i have used this method extensively to display
 websites within Pd (e.g.
 for http://umlaeute.mur.at/projects/surf-the-net)

an alternative method is to use the [tcpclient]
 object of mrpeach; the

hi Luigi,

thanks for the tip on OSculator. im just looking at it
now. you have it communicating with pd? i just tried
it out with nodebox real quick and seems to works
fine...

i also go the wiitar connecting to pd with a 3rd party
app called wiitar... that works fairly decent too!

i haven't got the wii working with darwiiremoteOSC yet
but seems pretty straight forward.

i would agree it would be nice to have a pd external
(aka.wiiremote) but for now these solutions seem
adequateeh?

i just got these two remotes in the mail from ebay
yesterday so i have not messed with them too much
other than making sure they worked... maybe it would
be nice to have a wiki page or something will all
wiimote related pd patches/vids/experiments/examples?

...lots of cool possibilities as a controller i see!!

BTW what else are people doing with the wiimote? i see
its interfaced with max/msp, and processing also.

Cheers

 Hello Mark and list!

A few months ago I made an approach to an automatic
 pitch correction patch,
like the autotune. I'm just a newbie, so I'm afraid
 the code is a bit
 messy... nevertheless it works!

In the attached patch you can select the 'scale' of
 notes, as you said, and
set a coefficient for the level of correction. A
 coefficient of 100 makes
the 'cher effect', and with 50 - 60 you get a
 natural voice.

If you introduce any improvement, please let me
 know!

By the way, related to pitch detection and
 correction, i'm very impressed
 with this:
 http://www.celemony.com/cms/index.php?id=dna
It's a polyphonic pitch detection and correction
 software... wow! Does
anyone in the list know something about the secret
 behind this kind of
 magic??? ;-)

[PD] autotune / pitch correction

2008-03-16 Thread mark edward grimm
hello list,

i am just wondering it anyone has implemented an
'autotune' / pitch correction type patch in PD for
audio input - not unlike the antares autotune
hardware/plugs

...and if so, if they would not mind sharing an
example?

it would be:

- fiddle~ to recognize audio pitch (to the best of its
ability)

- check it against a 'scales' database (the 'scales'
sub-patches in 'xyZee' come to mind off the top of my
head.

- use pitch shifting to shift audio input to closest
note on chosen scale.

...for simplicity's sake am i correct in the basics?

i could give it a shot myself but examples would be
killer!!!

Thanks
