Ok, so Standard Improved BSD, or SIBSD seems to be the answer to my
question.

Thanks,
Jonathan

The core of Pd from MIller is BSD. He distributes it with some GPLv2 stuff in
it. Pd-extended includes BSD, GPLv2 and GPLv3 code, so its GPLv3 as a whole
pacakge.

The difference it seems is that BSD allows proprietary use of the software.

Re: [PD] cyclone license

2010-06-20 Thread Jonathan Wilkes
Well, there is what Miller calls the Standard Improved BSD, or SIBSD,
which is generally referred to as the Modified BSD license to differentiate
from
the original BSD license:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#SoftwareLicenses

The Modified BSD allows anyone to use the code in proprietary software.
But even with the GPL, the copyright holder can decide to sell
individual commercial licenses to a company to use the code in proprietary
software (The author of JUCE does this). There's a
video somewhere on the web of Richard Stallman being grilled about
about this practice, but his explanation of suggesting it to a company
to get them to release the code under the GPL in the first place
seems reasonable.

One of the source files says to check LICENSE.txt for the distribution, which
I think would be GPLv2, but
then there's a LICENSE.txt in the miXed folder that looks like the revised
 BSD license.

Cyclone itself has the Pd license, as it was meant to be easy to grab to
include in vanilla.
