Sounds like you may have tried installing the wrong version. There
should be an armv6 or v7 (as opposed to x86 or amd64) build designed
specifically for the RPi. Hope this helps.

Hi Dan,

We've also been having a lot of fun with this, it's a great thing.

Got some footage of our 3&6 y.o.'s playing with it that I should fwd
(child's play indeed:).

The best one sadly I didn't catch any video of, but the 3&9 yo's had the
fattest beat last weekend and both stood there nodding like 'yeah, we are
dope', and they were right.

Re: [PD] Laptop + interface suggestion

2017-03-30 Thread Julian Brooks
Hi Joao,

Bit late in on this one but hope you don't mind a delayed response.

I recently gave up my x61s, been fixing-up the main one with 2 spares for
last couple of years but thought 'it's time'.

Bought a 2nd-hand x230 i5 with ips screen, stuffed it with 16gb ram and an
ssd - it's great (the dreaded mid-gig reboot takes about 5s).

Also bought a Startek expresscard to cardbus adaptor so still making use of
the RME mk1 Multiface.
The adaptor and rme pcmcia card (always the soundcards weak link) sticks
out of the side a lot, but my mobile phone (in its case) fits neatly
underneath and supports them fine.

Regards,

Julian

If I were in your situation, I’d stick with a Thinkpad. They are
expensive, but IMHO worth the price as they are rugged, reliable, and
repairable. In general, Linux distress run well on their hardware. Another
good option is a Panasonic Toughbook which are admittedly bulkier and
expensive but you can get one with a built-in handle so you look like you
work for the CIA/NSA and use it as a blunt-force protection device (I’m
 sure Katja knows).

Examples of both can be found used with decent prices (US vendor, but
gives you an idea of institutional refurbished market):

 * Newegg refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad

 * Newegg refurbished Panasonic Toughbook

As for audio interfaces, I agree with those that say stick with a
USB-compliant device. I am still using aRoland UA-25 which is from
mid-2000s and is USB 1.0 compliant. It works full stereo duplex with
everything, included iOS, without drivers etc. In fact, I bought a UA-25ex
used for $100 as a backup a coulee years ago.

Fancy stuff like MOTUs are really *nice* but far too reliant on
proprietary drivers. I believe USB 2.0 should have enough bandwidth for 8
channel output. Unlike Firewire, we can be pretty sure USB will be
supported for the foreseeable future, albeit through probably 10 different
dongles/adapters. Plus, you’ll know if you want to work with other Ohs in
the future, the device will probably keep working.

 Dear list,

I'm looking to buy new laptop and a matching audio interface for daily
use + audio performance/programming (not video). I would be interested to
know what are the current trends nowadays, and what experiences you have.

 My current setup is:
 - windows 10 (won't change)
 - Lenovo X61s (I'm a bit of a fanboy for ibm/lenovo)
 - RME multiface (still with pcmcia card)

I would be looking for a similar setup:
 - a robust laptop where to run w10. The less weight the better, even if
 it sacrifices some performance.
 - which audio interfaces are used nowadays, compared with the
multiface? E.g. with at least 8 analog outlets (I don't need that many
inlets), and also a digital outlet. Also the less weight and size the
better - a half-case size such as the multiface is quite convenient.
 - the computer will be used for day-to-day activities: office, notation
(sibelius/finale), and Pd audio programming. No games or too taxing
environments, so some features such as a high-power graphics card or the
latest ssd disk should be necessary.

 Best regards,

 Joao

Well, yes, the elements of the array, atom and symbol boxes do freeze after
that error. Also, the error appears similarly when drawing arrays inside
data structures and closing the 'data' patch. The freezing doesn't allow to
modify the data with the cursor. The cursor itself changes, but it does
nothing when clicking and dragging.

Re: [PD] [text define] functionality for text in structs?

2017-03-30 Thread Christof Ressi
> If it was possible to have an array of pointers,

I get your idea. You can already have [list]s of pointers but this is rather
cumbersome. Sometimes I've wished that pointers could be fields in structs
(don't know why that's not possible...). Together with a mechanism to compare
pointers (right now you can only route them by their type) these could indeed
add some new possibilities.

Hello, this is my first e-mail on the list, and i don't understand the code of
pd or anything like that, but I have an idea. Plus, sorry for bad english.
If it was possible to have an array of pointers, maintained by the user, we
could jump to some scalar in the list, say I have 1000 scalars, and an array
with pointers to 100th, 200th, 300th, or any combination. This would improve
the search.
Maybe this would be a list/array of pointers inside another scalar? What do you
think?
Using this design, the user itself can create his own structures with pointers,
creating trees,  graphs with the scalars themself.
It make sense?

I suppose you could tell the user via documentation, but then you'd have
go into what a linked list is and why linked list indexing is
O(n) versus array O(1) to explain the speed difference and yeah,
I see your point haha. And it's probably not good either to have a layer
of abstraction that isn't totally necessary either.

ah, that's interesting. admittedly, i haven't used pd structs that much
in my pd work as of yet but the stuff i want to do seems to be
increasingly lending itself to that (or a similar) sort of paradigm so
i'll keep that in mind!

ok, testing further. sorry for the confusion with the array writing, was a
graphical glitch indeed :-) (i was confused by the fact that i saw the first
value of the array being set to 1 when i first opened the subpatch, once i
redrew it to zero it did appear to stay there, but it seems that is a
limitation of my screen resolution or something)

i can make the error appear when i go as low as 1 for metro, but it only does
it sometimes:

(Tcl) INVALID COMMAND NAME: invalid command name ".x10031df00.c"
    while executing
".x10031df00.c delete plot10031e048"
    ("uplevel" body line 1)
    invoked from within
"uplevel #0 $docmds”

at metro 2 i could make it happen once in 20… everything above i cannot
reproduce.

and it only happens for me if i click into the array and try to change things
with the mouse in there.

[PD] Repeating an image texture in GEM

2017-03-30 Thread Antonio Roberts
Hi Pure Data list.

I'm attempting to repeat an image via [pix_coordinate]. The help patch
has an example of how by sending [rectangle 0, repeat 1( to
[pix_texture] but it results in there being gap between each
repetition once new coordinates are set. Worse still, if the image
isn't square there is a big blank space. If I use [rectangle 0 ( then
the aspect ratio is maintained but it doesn't repeat.

Does anyone know how to work around this?
