Re: FAJ 18-35 vs. FA 20-35?
Do you have any proof for the FA"0-35 being "much better"? In my opinion, the low price of the FA-J18-35 are a result of 1.) the omission of the aperture ring, 2.) a plastic lens mount, and 3.) the slow speed of this lens. Other than that I see no evidence that the FA-J18-35 is inferior to the FA20-35, neither optically nor mechanically. Arnold Joseph Tainter schrieb: Heiko, the FA 20-35 f4 is one of Pentax's best. Re: If Pentax were like an automobile company ... dealing with OT
Alex, I've been with this group for ... I don't know how many years. I've found it to be the most interesting of all those I've ever joined. The fact that threads appear regularly that have little, or nothing, to do with Pentax is what makes it so interesting. I don't care about cars and delete every post about them. Its very easy, the Del key is to the right just below insert, and I employ my middle finger, not being an expert typist. There are many other topics that don't interest me and I use the same technique. With very few exceptions the members are a great bunch of people. The really unpleasant ones haven't lasted very long and I have a filter for one of those who persists. I've also blotted my copybook a few times, but have been forgiven very soon ... by most ... I think. I believe that there is *always* someone in every list who knows more than you do. Take advantage of this. I also believe that about one in twenty will always disagree with you and there are others who will *always* nag. I've had some problems dealing with that. Re: *ist-D in DPReview Pentax Forum
For the *ist D, the FA-J 18-35 is not bad at all, as its limited zooming range and speed much help its optical quality! IMHO and from my 2-day experience the FA-J is as good as the chip of the *ist D requires it to be. I suspect the repair centers use something similar when they clean sensors, as blower brushes don't work all the time. I'm pretty nervous about allowing anything to touch the sensor, but the people locally who've used the swabs say that they work beautifully. If you want to see something really scary, remove your lens, fire the shutter on bulb (or lock up the mirror), and have a look at the pretty-coloured sensor that's now collecting millions of tiny dust particles. :) chris

Just tried it on my LX and couldn't do it. The MLU action (press the button and move the lever towards the lens) locks the lever. The only way to move it the opposite direction to activate the self-timer is to press the button releasing the lever, and this also deactivates the MLU. chris

Anyway, it's an old technique from when lenses didn't have shutters. The photographer would cap the lens, then pull the dark slide. The dark slide was then used as a flag in fromt of the lens while the cap was pulled. The flag was then used as a shutter to allow the exposure. After the exposure, the lens was recapped, and the dark slide was reinserted into the film back. It's still a great way to enjoy some of the classic lenses that are in barrel mounts. William Robb

I better still use film - I just bought a truckload of the stuff a couple of days before Peter led me to the dark side by going and importing an istD with my name on it! I am sure I will specifically set out to do a batch of film every now and again - if only to hold the loverly MZ-S again... Still like slides for some reason too. Makes me glad mine were nicked . I thought you could do this: Lift & lock the mirror. This made the lever loose from the 'neutral' position in the direction of the lens mouth, but you could still pull it away from the mouth to crank up the self-timer. Hi, Vic, I was walking by your (now) ~least~ favourite camera store (their discount outlet around the corner on Queen St., downtown), and they've got F4 bodies going for around $1000 Cdn. Re: Trouble with PUG
There are two possible causes. One is that this is caused when the ISP's mailserver was moved (see my previous post "Autopug hiccup". The other is more hypotethical... >From time to time, some people in USA have problems with the scripts timing out before the uploads are completed. Recently, I have come to suspect the internet infrastructure itself to be part of this problem. My ISP is connected to a commercial backbone that does not have special agreements with all US network operators for priority access to their backbone. Basically, this means that network traffic to and from my backbone will queue up last; especially at times of high traffic. well anyway, I'm working on the mailserver connection. This depends on your final image size. If you are printing 10x8 then that is pretty close to 4:3. 6x4 is the same ratio as 3:2 (what the *ist D sensor is). My largest prints are 19x13 which is also pretty close to the 3:2 ratio. It would be nice if more companies sold 12x8 paper which would work perfectly with the 3:2 ratio. For now I'm printing at 11x8.5 which is a better match than 10x8 and means I don't need to trim the paper. alex

The E-1 vibrates dust off the sensor every time your turn it on. Also, the 5Mp ratio is working out well. And, the 4/3 ratio requires less cropping than the 6MP ratio and so the net is close to the same pixels per image. Looks like they've got a winner with some in-between features and in-between price. They're selling, though perhaps not as well as they'd like. CRB

I was just at my favourite camera store and the owner was telling me about a customer who brought in two mint F3s motor drives a slew of excellent lenses etc. Stuff that cost about $10,000. Lucky to get $2,000 for it. The sad thing is, this stuff still takes just as good pictures as it did when it was worth $10,000. If you are going to do that, put your thumb on the bottom of the camera, and your index finger on the shutter button, and squeeze. You will impart less vibration that way. The other way is to use the self timer and French Flag the lens. Without a cable release, I would opt for the latter method. The LX will support French Flagging quite nicely on auto. Don't ask me why it's called French Flagging, I haven't a clue. William Robb

Hi, gang. Currently, the confirmation emails are not being sent out when you submit pictures through autopug. This is because the mail account has been moved to another server, and I need to reconfigure the scripts generating the email. I will look into this asap, but please keep submitting in the meantime. Street price of *ist-D kit?
A few days ago, someone posted this URL to Hunt's listing for the *ist-D kit: http://commerce5.pair.com/hunts/Merchant/ merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HPAV&Product_Code=2707507661&Category _Code=PENTAXDIGCAM If I read the description correctly, the price of the kit is US$1,699, which is the same price as what most places are charging for the body only. I called them to ask if they had the kit but they said it wasn't in stock and they could not tell me what the price was. Who else is selling the kit? --jc

Re: Old lenses, *istD, and the Pentax Mad Scientists
This is not true. The only lens like this is the very cheap zoom that was introduced along with the 300D. All their other lenses are fully EF compatible. BR From: Jostein <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Canon's solution to this, is to make dedicated wide-angles for the models with less than full-size chips. With rear elements that protrude further into the camera house than ordinary lenses. Because the mirror is smaller, there's room. They have even ensured that those lenses are physically incompatible with any full-size chip/film cameras.

Unfortunately you will get automatically wrongly-exposed images. The aperture actuator is designed for an "A" lens, and will *not* stop a "K" or "M" lens down to the correct setting; theresponse of the mechanisms is different. My calculations haven't been confirmed yet, but I believe the error will always be to over-expose (which is bad for digital). It will be by less than a stop at wide apertures, but the error will increase as the lens is asked to stop down further. The maximum exposure error depends critically on the exact motion, which I haven't measured, but looks like well over two stops.
*ist-D in DPReview Pentax Forum
Hi all, I've been lurking in the DPReview Pentax forum. It's an interesting read. It looks like a number of brand-agnostic folks have compared the *ist-D head-to-head against the Canon 10D and Nikon D100 and have chosen the *ist-D. This, along with the reviews that are being published, tells me that Pentax has a good shot of capturing significant market share in the DSLR business. The DSLR world is a great chance for a fresh start for Pentax; many DSLR buyers look to be moving up from cameras like the Canon G series and Sony F series. They aren't bringing old-school-photographer prejudices with them. Yeah, the K/M series issue is a drag, but how many of us do they have to worry about? On the other hand, some things haven't changed at all in the digital world. Some people seem to be quite happy dropping US$1700 on a new camera body and hanging a slow, cheap US$100 zoom on it. Amazing. In a way, Pentax seems to be encouraging this kind of behavior by creating a mediocre "kit lens" to go with the *ist-D. I'm not dropping the $$$ yet, but I anticipate that I will eventually. Anybody hang a *ist-D on the back of a big lens like a 500mm or 600mm beast? Seems like that would be the ultimate Pentax wildlife setup --Mark

You guys know me by now. I'll give almost anything a go. I'm the last person on the planet to read the instructions, usually as the detritus that was once something in perfectly good working order lays around me. However, the one thing that I would not entertain is using anything other than a blower brush *without the brush attached* on a DSLR sensor. That is, a rubber blower. Canon's official line is only to use a blower - of the kind that pumps air through a rubber chamber using the fingers to pump it. They specifically warn against using any commercially available cleaning sprays or blower sprays, claiming that the pressure and freezing action of the spray gas may damage the surface of the imaging element. They don't say anything about swabs in my manual. Personally I would not use anything that depended on contact with the sensor. .02 Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche ||=| www.macads.co.uk/snaps _ Free UK Mac Ads www.macads.co.uk
