Even though I said I am seeing homeless in my county in areas that I've never seen homeless before. There have been over 10,000 foreclosures just in my county alone, and California unemployment is at 10.5%. I've looked for a tent city in my county and haven't found one, although I think there must be one, even if small, I just don't know where to look. Not everyone has friends/family to fall back on when their unemployment runs out. State and county social services are strained to the max, because California was broke and still has major budget problems. Non-profits that dispense food and other help are also strained. People are falling through the cracks. Local non-profits report more women among the homeless, more whole families with kids. I read about the Tent City (new homeless) in Sacramento several weeks ago in the San Francisco Chronicle. Then it got into the New York Times and Oprah visited. At first the major said he was going to figure out how to make it so they could stay, provide sanitation and water, but in the last week he said the city will move them out within a month. Not really likely as I found out, but I thought I had to hurry to take photos. --- Pictures: I was hoping to get some good and/or artistic shots. I didn't. A lot of that was simply because I chickened out. I was also tired from walking around, and the areas weren't that easy to reach. If I had someone with me it would have been different, but I have found sometimes, as a woman, I just won't go some places alone. I did find out why it got in the news -- the Channel 3 news center is only about five blocks away. The Tent City is between the Sacramento river some railroad tracks, in an undeveloped area. The large part in the center is privately owned and surrounded by a fence -- all around the fence is the Tent City. Of the two remaining sides, one is a working quarry, and the other is a utility plant (electrical power). So that's it, and this is just to let people know, yes, there are tent cities of NEW homeless in California and the USA. http://www.mapphotography.com/TentCity/ Sorry, no good shots. But it also lets the rest of you imagine how much better you would have done it. Marnie ;-) **Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make meals for Under $10. On Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 8:01 PM, Bob W p...@web-options.com wrote: My advice is to get closer, literally and metaphorically. It's a subject you feel strongly about, but the pictures look hesitant, diffident and lacking in confidence. To get your message across you need to get right in among the tents, and interacting with more people. It may take quite a long time and many visits to build that level of confidence and trust from the people there, but it's the kind of dedication the people deserve, and probably the best way to get the pictures you want, and to tell us what you want to tell us. You have chosen a difficult subject, but if you want to do it justice that's what you have to do. For inspiration perhaps you could read about other women photographers, such as Mary Ellen Mark and Eve Arnold who have worked under difficult conditions. There's nothing wrong in taking someone with you, if that's what you need. It's certainly what I've done in difficult circumstances. I agree with most of what Bob says. The portrait of Richard is a very good photo, as are some of the closer shots of the porch area between the tents, but many of the photos don't really tell us much - many of us who live in urban areas have seen tent cities from far away, so seeing a clump of tents near a bridge isn't really anything new. You've got to get up close and personal to have impact. That being said, it sure isn't easy. We had a tent city here in Toronto (it was razed several years ago) and I walked by several times with my camera, intending to take photos. Each time, when I got to within about 100 metres of the place one of the residents would come out of his tent, see me and stare me down. Newspaper stories of knife fights and other brutalities happening in the place rather scared me off. I now realize that just talking to them, gaining their confidence, befriending one of them would have helped provide access to that world, but I was too nervous then to do that. Today I would be able to do that, but it would be a time-consuming thing, wouldn't it? Bringing someone along might be good, but I have to tell you (from doing some street shooting with my partner, Judy) being a woman can work in your favour. There are many times that Judy's able to take someone's photo on the streets where I know I'd have gotten a scowl or worse. I think that some people feel far less threatened by a woman with a camera than they do by a man with a camera. Take advantage of it! Most homeless that I've gotten to know have extremely serious substance abuse problems and/or have major mental illnesses. If that makes their decision to be homeless self inflicted then so be it. There was the friend of the woman I was dating in '86 that decided to walk away from a high paying tech job and be homeless. He was the one that got busted for stealing the CD player and CDs out of my car. Note, writing my initials on my CDs with a sharpie have led to the perps being busted on two occasions. I tend to think that most choose homelessness because they simply can't function in society. This has truth to it. None of that means that one ought not be responsible for their actions - what was done to your home was horrible and you have every right to be angry with ~those individuals~ - however they may or may not be representative of others in their situation. I agree that you cannot claim that the traits of a group are necessarily the traits of any one member of that group. Saying that people are homeless due to their own actions is like saying that the people on this list are men who are over 40. I think what's happening with the tent city that Marnie is chronicling may be something slightly different. There are likely quite a few in that community who were living on the edge and were pushed over that edge by losing their jobs in this fragile economy. However there are also likely a number in that village that have the substance abuse and mental illness problems that traditionally have plagued the homeless. I'm sure it's a very brutal place to live. It's tough to figure out which are which. Who will take a hand and lift themselves out of poverty and who will take a hand and lift your wallet. I've also found that the harshest critics of people in those situations are often the ones that clawed their way out of them. You should talk to my ex-wife about the homeless sometime, she'll make me seem like Pollyanna. -- The fastest way to get your question answered on the net is to post the wrong answer. Re: GESO - Tent City, USA
In viewing the images and reading your story with the pictures and then reading the follow-up comments, I think you have made a good start on something here. No, this doesn't represent a finished work by any means, but it did give us a first glimpse into the issue and provided an interest for some on the list. Eac There have been over 10,000 foreclosures just in my county alone, and Eac California unemployment is at 10.5%. I've looked for a tent city in my county and Eac haven't found one, although I think there must be one, even if small, I just Eac don't know where to look. Eac Not everyone has friends/family to fall back on when their unemployment runs Eac out. Eac I read about the Tent City (new homeless) in Sacramento several weeks ago in Eac the San Francisco Chronicle. Then it got into the New York Times and Oprah Eac visited. Eac I did find out why it got in the news -- the Channel 3 news center is only Eac about five blocks away. Eac The Tent City is between the Sacramento river some railroad tracks, in an Eac undeveloped area. Eac The large part in the center is privately owned and surrounded by a fence -- Eac all around the fence is the Tent City. Of the two remaining sides, one is a Eac working quarry, and the other is a utility plant (electrical power). Re: Ouch update
Very long time ago, a friend fell from a wooden bridge to a boat mooring over a mix of rocks, oysters and muddy water. Lots of stitches, a wet FM2 and 70~210 zoom, a wet and battered bag with lots of gear inside (safe), almost 4 weeks without work. He passed the job to yours trully. Next photo was in a nearby sierra - the client supplied the 4x4, wich suffered 3 punctured tires in 25 km. The place really sucked, the photo ops were almost inexistent, and exactly the opposite the client expected (magazine story about Fortaleza's different attractions). I made the mistake of smiling to the wrong person, wich promptly got the team evicted from the only interesting place - a Macumba Courtyard. Two days after the the job, my FG and 35~70 got hit by a bike, and almost disintegrated. I suffered only a minor scratch, but had to return the money I just received (sales agreement of said FG and zoom) and had to borrow another camera since all my pentax gear was in Sao Paulo being cleaned... Yes, the photos sucked too. Some days (weeks?) we'd better stay in bed. LF Larry Colen escreveu: On Fri, Mar 27, 2009 at 10:17:05AM -0700, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: Sucky. Fortunately, with insurance, my two root canals over the past year and a half didn't quite total to that much, but I'm out of pocket $1300 for my girlfriends tooth work over the past couple of months. Frankly, I'd rather spend the dosh on camera gear. From my experiences with manufacturing clients and in computer sales service, I can tell you that your repair price is within 10% of what it costs Pentax to manufacture the little beast. I know for a fact that the Macintosh Plus cost $283 to be manufactured back in 1986, another $55 per unit for marketing, distribution and support. And it sold for $2299.00.
