Golden op for night shots where ever you are

2009-03-27 Thread AlunFoto
Gang,

Tomorrow at 8:30 PM in your local timezone is Earth Hour. If you don't
know what that is, quench your ignorance by googling or looking here:
http://www.earthhour.org

It's a golden opportunity for some long-exposure nighttime
photography. So drag out you tripod and make it a Pentax moment, ok?

Not that I'm agitating or anything... :-)

Reason why I don't label this as OT is that at least here in Norway,
Pentax is a main sponsor of the event. It also stages a photo
competition around it with Pentax products for prizes. Nice touch to
publicity for a change, imho.

Cheers,

 Hi all,

I haven't shot anything worth sharing so far this year, and this one
is probably no exception; I'm blaming this inspiration hiatus on the
 weather, like I usually do.
I'm still shooting some project-wannabes of mine, but it has been
feeling like homework lately, but I digress.

Anyway, just a view of Manhattan from Brooklyn

Thanks for the insight that your photos give.

 Overview:

I went to Sacramento  Tent City. When I posted a photograph of one homeless
beggar on list a while  back, quite a few said he was a professional. Even
though I said I am seeing  homeless in my county in areas that I've never seen
 homeless  before.

There have been over 10,000 foreclosures just in my county  alone, and
California unemployment is at 10.5%. I've looked for a tent city in  my
 county and
haven't found one, although I think there must be one, even if  small, I just
 don't know where to look.

Not everyone has  friends/family to fall back on when their unemployment runs
out. State and  county social services are strained to the max, because
California was broke and  still has major budget problems. Non-profits that
dispense food and other help  are also strained. People are falling through
 the
cracks. Local non-profits  report more women among the homeless, more whole
 families with  kids.

I read about the Tent City (new homeless) in Sacramento  several weeks ago in
the San Francisco Chronicle. Then it got into the New York  Times and Oprah
visited. At first the major said he was going to figure out how  to make it so
they could stay, provide sanitation and water, but in the last  week he said
the city will move them out within a month. Not really likely as I  found out,
but I thought I had to hurry to take  photos.

 ---
 Pictures:

I was  hoping to get some good and/or artistic shots. I didn't. A lot of that
was  simply because I chickened out. I was also tired from walking around,
and the  areas weren't that easy to reach. If I had someone with me it would
have been  different, but I have found sometimes, as a woman, I just won't go
 some places  alone.

I did find out why it got in the news -- the Channel 3 news  center is only
 about five blocks away.

The Tent City is between the  Sacramento river some railroad tracks, in an
 undeveloped area.

The large part in the center is privately owned and surrounded by  a fence --
all around the fence is the Tent City. Of the two remaining sides,  one is a
working quarry, and the other is a utility plant (electrical power).

So that's it, and this is just to let people know, yes, there are  tent
cities of NEW homeless in California and the  USA.

 http://www.mapphotography.com/TentCity/

Sorry, no good  shots. But it also lets the rest of you imagine how much
better you would have  done it.

 Marnie ;-)

My advice is to get closer, literally and metaphorically. It's a subject you
feel strongly about, but the pictures look hesitant, diffident and lacking
in confidence. To get your message across you need to get right in among the
tents, and interacting with more people. It may take quite a long time and
many visits to build that level of confidence and trust from the people
there, but it's the kind of dedication the people deserve, and probably the
best way to get the pictures you want, and to tell us what you want to tell
us. You have chosen a difficult subject, but if you want to do it justice
that's what you have to do.

For inspiration perhaps you could read about other women photographers, such
as Mary Ellen Mark and Eve Arnold who have worked under difficult
 conditions.

There's nothing wrong in taking someone with you, if that's what you need.
It's certainly what I've done in difficult circumstances.

I agree with most of what Bob says.

The portrait of Richard is a very good photo, as are some of the
closer shots of the porch area between the tents, but many of the
photos don't really tell us much - many of us who live in urban areas
have seen tent cities from far away, so seeing a clump of tents near
a bridge isn't really anything new.

You've got to get up close and personal to have impact.

That being said, it sure isn't easy. We had a tent city here in
Toronto (it was razed several years ago) and I walked by several times
with my camera, intending to take photos. Each time, when I got to
within about 100 metres of the place one of the residents would come
out of his tent, see me and stare me down. Newspaper stories of knife
fights and other brutalities happening in the place rather scared me
off.

I now realize that just talking to them, gaining their confidence,
befriending one of them would have helped provide access to that
world, but I was too nervous then to do that. Today I would be able
to do that, but it would be a time-consuming thing, wouldn't it?

Bringing someone along might be good, but I have to tell you (from
doing some street shooting with my partner, Judy) being a woman can
work in your favour. There are many times that Judy's able to take
someone's photo on the streets where I know I'd have gotten a scowl or
worse. I think that some people feel far less threatened by a woman
with a camera than they do by a man with a camera. Take advantage of
it! (but still be careful)

cheers,
frank

There was the friend of the woman I was dating in '86 that decided to
walk away from a high paying tech job and be homeless. He was the one
that got busted for stealing the CD player and CDs out of my car.

Note, writing my initials on my CDs with a sharpie have led to the
perps being busted on two occasions.

I tend to think that most choose homelessness because they simply

None of that means that one ought not be responsible for their actions

I agree that you cannot claim that the traits of a group are
necessarily the traits of any one member of that group. Saying that
people are homeless due to their own actions is like saying that the
people on this list are men who are over 40.

I think what's happening with the tent city that Marnie is

It's tough to figure out which are which. Who will take a hand and
lift themselves out of poverty and who will take a hand and lift your
wallet.

I've also found that the harshest critics of people in those
situations are often the ones that clawed their way out of them. You
should talk to my ex-wife about the homeless sometime, she'll make me
seem like Pollyanna.

Yes. My church is part of a group of churches that is doing something called
Winter Nights doing the winter. (Not the summer.) They take in homeless
families with kids and provide them a place to stay, food, and activities for
the kids.

There is a depressing increase of homeless kids in California. All agencies,
both government and non-profit, are reporting this. It's one reason school
lunches have become a crucial factor in the California budget, it may be the
only real meal some kids get -- homeless or not.

Some people are only one pay check away from disaster. These days with all
kinds of companies/stores going belly up and/or doing massive layoffs,
disaster hits.

I've also been reading stories in the paper about how our unemployment
department is overwhelmed -- most claims are now done online or by phone,
mainly
by phone. Sometimes it takes people weeks to get through on the phone lines,
they are so clogged. A week wait might be a disaster for someone.

And, of course, a lot of people don't qualify for unemployment.

Actually I suspect more people are living in their cars than in tents. I've
certainly seen some parked cars that look that way.

I am going to try find some to take photos of.

Thanks for looking, Marnie.

In viewing the images and reading your story with the pictures and
then reading the follow-up comments, I think you have made a good
start on something here. No, this doesn't represent a finished work
by any means, but it did give us a first glimpse into the issue and
provided an interest for some on the list. Where you go from here is
less important - I think your idea of finding more local to more in
depth work makes the most sense. I believe the 'issue' you are
trying to bring to light is much bigger than just the Sacramento Tent
City so continue with more 'intimate' work elsewhere will still carry
the continuity and perhaps make for even a stronger story to show

Eac Overview:

Eac I went to Sacramento Tent City. When I posted a photograph of one homeless

Eac though I said I am seeing homeless in my county in areas that I've never
seen
Eac homeless before.

Eac There have been over 10,000 foreclosures just in my county alone, and
Eac California unemployment is at 10.5%. I've looked for a tent city in my
county and
Eac haven't found one, although I think there must be one, even if small, I
just
Eac don't know where to look.

Eac Not everyone has friends/family to fall back on when their unemployment
runs
Eac out. State and county social services are strained to the max, because
Eac California was broke and still has major budget problems. Non-profits that
Eac dispense food and other help are also strained. People are falling
through the
Eac cracks. Local non-profits report more women among the homeless, more whole
Eac families with kids.

Eac I read about the Tent City (new homeless) in Sacramento several weeks ago
in
Eac the San Francisco Chronicle. Then it got into the New York Times and Oprah
Eac visited. At first the major said he was going to figure out how to make
it so
Eac they could stay, provide sanitation and water, but in the last week he
said
Eac the city will move them out within a month. Not really likely as I found
out,
Eac but I thought I had to hurry to take photos.

Eac ---
Eac Pictures:

Eac I was hoping to get some good and/or artistic shots. I didn't. A lot of
that
Eac was simply because I chickened out. I was also tired from walking around,
Eac and the areas weren't that easy to reach. If I had someone with me it
would
Eac have been different, but I have found sometimes, as a woman, I just won't
go
Eac some places alone.

Eac I did find out why it got in the news -- the Channel 3 news center is only
Eac about five blocks away.

Eac The Tent City is between the Sacramento river some railroad tracks, in an
Eac undeveloped area.

Eac The large part in the center is privately owned and surrounded by a fence
--
Eac all around the fence is the Tent City. Of the two remaining sides, one is
a
Eac working quarry, and the other is a utility plant (electrical power).

Eac So that's it, and this is just to let people know, yes, there are tent
Eac cities of NEW homeless in California and the USA.

Eac http://www.mapphotography.com/TentCity/

Eac Sorry, no good shots. But it also lets the rest of you imagine how much
Eac better you would have done it.

I keep a bike at the office to ride to lunch. I park it next to a

Re: Ouch update

2009-03-27 Thread Luiz Felipe
Very long time ago, a friend fell from a wooden bridge to a boat mooring
over a mix of rocks, oysters and muddy water. Lots of stitches, a wet
FM2 and 70~210 zoom, a wet and battered bag with lots of gear inside
(safe), almost 4 weeks without work. He passed the job to yours trully.

Next photo was in a nearby sierra - the client supplied the 4x4, wich
suffered 3 punctured tires in 25 km. The place really sucked, the photo
ops were almost inexistent, and exactly the opposite the client expected
(magazine story about Fortaleza's different attractions). I made the
mistake of smiling to the wrong person, wich promptly got the team
evicted from the only interesting place - a Macumba Courtyard.

Two days after the the job, my FG and 35~70 got hit by a bike, and
almost disintegrated. I suffered only a minor scratch, but had to return
the money I just received (sales agreement of said FG and zoom) and had
to borrow another camera since all my pentax gear was in Sao Paulo being
cleaned...

Yes, the photos sucked too. Some days (weeks?) we'd better stay in bed.

Sorry that your month of March was marred by this accident, Larry. But
you'll be back out there capturing photons in no time. Even less than
no time if you pay Pentax a rush fee up front.

From my experiences with manufacturing clients and in computer sales
service, I can tell you that your repair price is within 10% of what
it costs Pentax to manufacture the little beast.

I know for a fact that the Macintosh Plus cost $283 to be manufactured
back in 1986, another $55 per unit for marketing, distribution and
support. And it sold for $2299.00. Apple has always sold on the high
end of market value, which is why they usually have more cash reserves

Happened upon this old weathered stump which I couldn't resist 'gathering'.

very nice and a dramatic rendering.
The left part of the stump looks interesting with the small parts
allmost floating in thin air. I would also try to get closer if
possible.

I still have the fourth roll of film I shot with that 645 in 2006
waiting to be processed. The other three I shot just before it ...
I've scanned three or four frames out of them so far.

In the meantime, I've made 10,000+ exposures with the K10D and 25,000+
with my other cameras. And processed, posted, exhibited, or sold at
least 1000 of them.

Funny ... similar percentages of finished images.
But total numbers are WAY different. ];-)
