It is a good photo, but having seen your husband in real life, I should
point out that on your photos he looks - how to put it, bigger than
life. I can't say if it is good or not, but this is what I observe.

Please pass him my regards although I don't recall having a chance to
exchange few words with him.

I have one that I bought new from B&H just before they were
discontinued. As far as I can tell, its performance is as good as its
reputation. Interestingly enough, it accepts the A2X-L teleconverter.
The combination makes a 400mm F8 macro lens that goes 2 to 1.

Here's the kicker--I almost never use it. No time these days with a
demanding job, two preschoolers, etc. So I'm thinking about selling
it. It's pretty much mint (no marks on it that I can see), and I have
the original box, soft case, etc. If you're interested , contact me off
list.

I also have the A2X-L (purchased used), with caps and original hard
case, but no box.

C41 process B&W films scan beautifully, Christine, and print very
nicely. Just have negatives made at the photofinisher, do the rest
yourself. I bet you can make a much better print of this portrait than
what they handed you with a scan and two minutes in Photoshop or
Lightroom!

Or buy traditional chemistry B&W film, process it yourself. A daylight
developing tank, dark bag to load it, a thermometer, a bottle of
developer, a bottle of fixer, a couple of measuring cups and running
water .. that's all you need to do the job. Matter of fact, I'm
processing the last ancient roll of Agfa Copex RAPID microfilm that
way in a few minutes.

developed at my neighborhood Walgreens, and the prints were printed on
Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper. I think this was taken with the 50mm lens
2.0 that came with the camera. At some point I changed to the FA 50mm
f1.4,

but I can't remember when--it's back to writing shooting info down in a
little pocket notebook. Oh, fun :-). Just spent some time looking for a
lab. I found D'ore Photo Service, which is fairly close by.

http://www.caguila.com/caguila/darrelfilm/content/R1_4_large.html

I have to get back on the construction site for some shooting next
week--that is, if I can. There's a strike on and construction has stopped.
I thought I'd take the MX with me and shoot a roll along with digital.
Shooting film after digital has been discombobulating in a hysterically
funny way--though I have learned that I really should get the Katz Eye for
my digital cameras. I'm kind of chicken about installing it though.

Thanks, Wendy! Very happy to have the MX.
Big cheers, Christine

2010-07-10 Thread Peter Loveday

Kodak produces on variety, BW400CN, which is designed to be printed on
colour paper, they stopped making Portra BW (their other variety) a
long time ago.. Ilford produces XP2 Plus which is designed to be
printed on B&W paper.

Anyone know what the difference is between BW400CN and this:

http://www.camerastore.com.au/Kodak+Select+400+ISO+24+exp+C+41+B%26W+Film_707_details.htm

- Kodak Select Black and White + 400 ?

I can see both advertised at different places here, though Kodak only
mentions the one on their site... is it the same thing in a different box,
or what?

Re: OT - Bike Recovered

2010-07-10 Thread John Celio

When the officer said he would be forced to run a check on all the
serial numbers on all the bikes in his van for stolen property, the seller
quickly said he'd let me take the bike if we'd leave, and that was that!

Did the police pursue this? In the UK that seller would have been
arrested on suspicion of dealing in stolen property.

Well, three cops showed up when I called and at least one was still there
when I left, so it's possible they did follow up on their threat, or did
something else to make life difficult for the guy. I kinda doubt it,
though. One of the officers mentioned that there's a lot of stolen property
that passes through the swap meet and that they had given up on trying to
clean it up long ago for lack of funding and manpower. Doesn't give me a
ton of confidence in them, but at least they're there when someone finds
their stolen property there.

True. The K28/3.5 is one of the sharpest lenses I ever owned. I sold it to JCO,

Eric,
There are more A series lenses, but some are a little rare. Pentax made a
ton of M series lenses for the MX, ME, ME Super, etc. The A series went with
the Super Program and Program Plus cameras. They are desirable as the
apertures are the same as measured on the latest cameras. The A 28/2.8, A
50/1.7, A 50/1.4 are all pretty common on ebay and not too pricey. There are
A 20/2.8, A*85/1.4, A 100/2.8, A 200/4, A*300/4, A 400/5.6. They are nice
lenses, but get more expensive. Pentax lens history by series is M, A, F,
FA, DFA, DA. The M's and A's are manual focus. The F's and FA's are the
start of autofocus. The DFA's and DA's are especially for the latest
autofocus digitals. (The DFA's and DA's lose the aperture ring and aperture
is only controled thru the camera.) Regards, Bob S.

The SMC Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8 lens is a wonderful little lens. It's

wonderful bokeh. It was the first Pentax lens I used when I purchased

It actually only covers medium format adapters that allow those lenses
to work on a K Mount body. The discussion of K mount electronics from A
onward is applicable, but you have to make allowances for the somewhat
different mechanical connections. .

Yes. You should check out Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page. It
has all the information you can possibly need about Pentax Kmount
cameras, lenses and accessories. It covers film (35 mm and medium
format) and digital camera systems.

Yes. You should check out Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page. It
has all the information you can possibly need about Pentax Kmount
cameras, lenses and accessories. It covers film (35 mm and medium
format) and digital camera systems.

Hmm. Now it's sounding more interesting. I just purchased a *ist DS. May not be

Is this one in a series of lenses, i.e., are their Pentax-As o other focal

I quite agree. And I have ample evidence here. In front of me on my
desk at this moment I have a Pentax MX with an SMC-M 50.1.4 *and* a
Sony A850 with a Super Multi-Coated Takumar 50/1.4 :) The viewfinder

brightness and eyepoint. I find it's even easier to manual focus with
the Sony.

I kept my MX even though I have no plans to shoot 35mm film ever again
but just because it's such a nice camera. (That and the fact that I
couldn't get any money for it these days!)

Thanks. Thought it was too good to be true. I'm looking for a manual focus, but

Re: Pentax-A SMC 28mm f/2.8 F2.8

2010-07-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The "Pentax-A" series lenses are all manual focus.

They have the linear-action iris actuator and a special position on
the aperture ring allowing a Pentax body with on-body aperture control
(all the DSLRs) to set the aperture value using the body controls.
They're fully compatible with the DSLR bodies with respect to all
auto-exposure modes.

The SMC Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8 lens is a wonderful little lens. It's
small and light, slightly soft until stopped down to f/4 but has
wonderful bokeh. It was the first Pentax lens I used when I purchased
the *ist DS body in 2004.

Pentax-A lenses are MF, not AF lenses.

If you need AF, you need F, FA, DFA, DA lenses.

2010-07-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

From: Bruce Dayton

so glad it ended well john. it sucks that the thieves get away with this.

I'm glad he got his bike back, but I'm not surprised the cops didn't
follow up on obvious criminal activity.

Several years ago, I had a checkbook stolen out of the glove box of my
car when someone broke into it. I stopped all the checks immediately,
but the thief still got several forged checks accepted by local merchants.

I had a hassle sending letters and copies of the police report to the
merchants when they tried to collect on the "bad checks".

For one thing, I learned that many "reputable" merchants will accept a
check under the most ludicrous circumstances and expect you to make good
their loss.

I had one where the forger marked through my address AND my driver's
license number from the front of check, wrote in a different address a
block down the street from me and signed her own name to the check.

Plus the merchant wrote HER driver's license number on the back of the
check.

When I got the copy of the check from the Credit Union, I took it down
to the officer assigned to the case, figuring it might help with the
investigation.

The cop took one look at it and said, "Oh yeah, that's the crack house."

He then informed it still didn't give them evidence enough to arrest anyone.

John,

I am happy to hear your happy story.

What bothers me, however, is that the police officer who was clearly
convinced that it was your stolen bik, didn't actually check the
rest of the bikes against the database of the stolen bikes (unless
that was a bluff on his part).

A happy ending to my stolen bike saga!

When I reported my bike stolen, the police and others suggested checking out
the local weekly swap meet. This morning, a friend picked me up early and
we headed over there. By mistake we ended up missing the parking lot
turn-off and parked in the swap meet area. By pure luck, we parked two rows
down from a big van that was FULL of bikes, and by even more luck my bike
was one of the two dozen he had pulled out and set up in his stall.

Now, as I mentioned in the original thread, I had never written down the
serial number of my bike, so I couldn't just go claim it. I called the
police, who showed up and said that if I could identify it as the same one
from the description in my police report, they could probably convince the
seller to turn it over.

The seller was in no mood to cooperate and was very argumentative with me as
I explained every mark and scratch on the bike. He had stripped off almost
all the accessories I'd put on it, but there were clear distinguishing marks
that I had described on the police report that were still evident.
Eventually one officer pulled him aside, and after a few minutes the officer
came back and told me to take the bike, it was mine. He later told me he
had asked the seller for his business license or tax info, neither of which
he had. When the officer said he would be forced to run a check on all the
serial numbers on all the bikes in his van for stolen property, the seller
quickly said he'd let me take the bike if we'd leave, and that was that!

I wish I'd been smart and written down the serial number, because then the
seller might actually be facing criminal charges. Who knows how many stolen
bikes he's fenced for thieves? I've resolved to keep a record of every
serial number of every item of value that I have, starting with my bike and
camera equipment, so that the next time this happens I will be better
prepared. Live and learn!

that's terrific news - nice to hear a happy ending.

I have always kept receipts for valuable goods, although I don't know why -
I was never that well organised when I was younger - but it paid off
big-time with the insurance when my Pentax equipment was stolen and I had
the receipts for pretty much everything, going back years.

OT - Bike Recovered

2010-07-10 Thread John Celio

Thanks for reading,
John

Impressions from various photo papers

2010-07-10 Thread Igor Roshchin

Hi All,

I tried two new papers this weekend.
One is Harman Matt FB Mp (Fibre Matte), and the other one is
Premier Velvet BW.
I am underwhelmed by the former one, while the latter one looks really good.
I had a problem with Harman Matt FB Mp. The ink seems to chip off from
its surface relatively easily (while I was mounting the photo into a
frame, under glass).

I haven't done' much after printing with Premier Velvet BW, but
it looks much more impressive, all together... The texture seems
to be very good for the photo. (very contrast, almost binary
silhouettes of two dancers, similar to what I posted recently
(Yin and Yang of Tango).

Now, I have a question for people who have experience with such matte
papers: Do you do anything special with the surface of the photographs
to protect them? (E.g. do you use Premier's print shield spray:
http://premierart.info/pc_printshield.php or any other lacquers?)

Well, I can really relate to Godfrey on this one. Up until now, I
have managed with mostly contacts my entire life. There was a short
stint where I was wearing glasses and I really didn't like shooting a
camera, because of the lack of eye relief.

At age 50, and with astigmatism, it looks like I will be heading back
to glasses shortly to allow me to see near and far well. I have been
doing the trick of monovision where one eye is corrected for near and
one for far, but finding that to not work as well anymore - have done
it for several years. So when I put on glasses and look through my
K-x vs my K20D, the K-x is a bit easier to see everything than the
K20D.

back in the world of film (sort of) with my MX

2010-07-10 Thread Luiz Felipe
Godfrey, Adam;

Really a subjective matter - not science, so diff opinions are 100% ok :-)

No hands (or eye) experience with the A900. Quick tries with Canon and Nikon
finders, APS and FF, all darker than Lx & Mx. No fancy focusing screens. Lx
wins (for me) due to adjust - I'm shortsighted and the Mx lacks adjustment. But
both are outstanding for me. I did choose the Ds over the Dl because it's
finder is slightly better - big diff for me, spoiled by ages of Lx and Mx. Used
Canon's F1n for years, didn't enjoy its finder that much. Use often Canon's
XTi, hate its finder. Again, my feelings on the matter. :-)

You can also get much better results by scanning the negative and
printing as BW on your 2880. To my mind, lab printing of C41 is
always unsatisfactory.

Paul

Christine, I second Paul's comment -- I only had bw processed
commercially
a couple of times out of desperate need and it was always crappy...

You don't have to really set up a darkroom to do just do the developing
yourself - just crawl into a closet to load the film
into the tank... everything else can be done in the light then print on
your computer..

Overall I agree with Godfrey on the finder, except being a
non-eyeglass wearer I had no issues with the Nikon FM's. I actually
found the MX's finder to cause eyestrain due to the low eyepoint and
high magnification.

The best finder I've used is on Sony's A900. It's big, bright and very
easy to focus with (especially with an M screen). The closely related
Minolta Maxxum 9 finder is also excellent.

Not to be overly contentious, but the Pentax MX viewfinder had for me
the same issues I had with the Olympus OM1 and Nikon FM series
viewfinders: too much magnification, not enough eye point distance for
me wearing my glasses. I had to work to see the whole frame and find
the metering information and camera settings. The high-eye point
viewfinder on my Nikon F3/T, Olympus E-1, Panasonic G1 is FAR superior
... I can see the whole image at a glance, as well as all the
in-viewfinder exposure settings and metering indicators, with no
strain. And the G1 finder is perfectly visible in light levels that
leave the MX with a 50mm f/1.4 lens like looking into a black hole.

I hear this kind of praise of old 35mm SLR viewfinders all the time. I
think it's mostly just wistful fondness for things past. Brightness
and magnification are only two components to what makes a top notch
viewfinder for a camera ... they're important, for sure, but they're
not the entire world.

The Pentax MX body, however, was perhaps one of the very nicest Pentax
35mm SLRs. Simple, mechanical, direct and to the point like the Nikon
FM2n. Modest in size, well finished. If I had found myself shooting
any 35mm film, I might have kept mine even with one lens.

Christine, the Mx is very close to a DSLR killer - when it comes to size and
viewfinder. Even the full format DSLRs have problems matching the Mx finder,
due to light losses in the mirror to allow for AF and fancy metering. True, a
modern focusing screen can shine here, but the moment you give the same upgrade
the Mx the results from the oldie shoud improve too...

Never got a neutral copy from those c41 b&w films unless I sent them to b&w lab
for printing, but the quick return from a nearby minilab got me out of trouble
more than once - getting me an early ok from a client so I would move to the
next studio setup, prints to be delivered later in proper.

Very interesting pic! You got me thinking about carriyng the Mx more often. But
that also means lab developing, film scanning... :-/ OTOH, every pic is
available for a second high res scanning if I manage to catch anything of
interest... next week I'll give it a try.

I've never encountered one that would do that, but I've been told that
they're out there. I actually would be a little surprised at that,
though, since I don't think the DVI interface has much in the way of
signals going from the monitor to the computer. It might be possible
through DDC or something, though, so I'm not sure.

I remember one from years ago - paper white monochrome VGA CRT.

It could be rotated from landscape to portrait orientation and would
detect which one it was in. IIRC, they showed Aldus PageMaker DTP
software in the advertising, and how easy it made page layouts.

I think it was available for early monochrome Macs.

I dunno. I can't help thinking that Dennis has been replaced by Walter...

Will probably be heading to either the West country or other points
south for holiday towards the end of July or beginning of August so
could meet up.

I've never encountered one that would do that, but I've been told that
they're out there. I actually would be a little surprised at that,
though, since I don't think the DVI interface has much in the way of
signals going from the monitor to the computer. It might be possible
through DDC or something, though, so I'm not sure.

Yep, that stuff is working pretty well so far. I've just been shooting
the RSX and Pro 100N so far but they're working well. Not even much in
the way of colour shift.

I've actually got stuff in the fridge which is a lot older (some
VPSIII with Calgary Olympics badging).

Re: back in the world of film (sort of) with my MX

2010-07-10 Thread Derby Chang

Christine Aguila wrote:
I bought Wendy's MX and had my first try out with some Kodak BW400CN
film which is processed in color negative chemistry--Process C-41. As
you can see, there's a greenish tint to the image here of Darrel. I
had these developed at my neighborhood Walgreens, and the prints were
printed on Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper. I think this was taken
with the 50mm lens 2.0 that came with the camera. At some point I
changed to the FA 50mm f1.4, but I can't remember when--it's back to
writing shooting info down in a little pocket notebook. Oh, fun :-).
Just spent some time looking for a lab. I found D'ore Photo Service,
which is fairly close by.

http://www.caguila.com/caguila/darrelfilm/content/R1_4_large.html

I have to get back on the construction site for some shooting next
week--that is, if I can. There's a strike on and construction has
stopped. I thought I'd take the MX with me and shoot a roll along with
digital. Shooting film after digital has been discombobulating in a
hysterically funny way--though I have learned that I really should get
the Katz Eye for my digital cameras. I'm kind of chicken about
installing it though.

Thanks, Wendy! Very happy to have the MX.
Big cheers, Christine

Hey Christine

'tis the Indian summer of film. Really. The gorgeous MX will be around
for decades yet, but heaven forbid, if something untoward happens, there
are still wonderful technicians to get it in order. Film technology is
at its peak, and developer/fixer chemicals are still reasonably
accessible and fresh.

Darrel glows on film.

I have a few rolls of XPAN Tmax in by bathroom right now. And I'm
listening to some late Richard Strauss
