He recently bought an image stabilized Sigma 50-500 for his Canon 7D, but returned it because he didn't want to pay $1600 for a lens where the pictures weren't perfectly sharp. He also mused that his sensor may have contributed to it, since it isn't full frame. Enablement (Sigma EX 24-60/2.8 DG)
Hi! Got the subj. today from the post. Also on its way Pentax SMC FA 24-90/3.5-4.5. Reason: Tamron 28-75/2.8 is good but not wide enough, not if I have to shoot inside Galia's classroom. And additionally - I am not going to buy any more DA lenses unless I cannot do without them. First impressions: 1. Well built. 2. Rings rotate the other way. 3. Issued -7 AF correction. 4. Ergonomically convenient, fits my hands well. More to come as I intend to put this lens and Pentax 24-90 to proper use. The 24-90 was my favorite lens on my (P)Z-1p, and lately it has been spending a lot of time on my K7. Any problems have been with the photographer, not the camera or lens! PESO - Sunny Meadow
Whatever these plants were (maybe thistles of some sort?) they were going to seed and when the wind blew their fluff was flying about in the sunshine. It also fits better since it's essentially a dove bar shape. I am patiently awaiting my Panasonic 20 1.7 pancake which will give me the desired degree of compactness, not to mention speed and field of view. I suspect the Kx with the DA 40 would be similar. I'm glad you said that, Brian. I struggled with that issue before posting the image. At first, I rotated the image to make the building lines vertical, but that through the blue fence out of horizontal, and it looked worse (to my eye). Then, I tried perspective adjustment in Photo Shop, but that squashed the buildings a bit too much, so I went back to the original. I think that I will start all over, and try a little perspective adjustment, a little rotation and a little cropping to see if I can get a balance between keeping the vertical lines vertical, the horizontal lines horizontal, and the building proportions close to reality. OT iMovie to iDvd
I did this once before and it worked, but it was a few years ago. I made a slide show, with music of the wedding shots in iMovie HD. It says to share to iDvd which i have. I dropped and dragged the file as it says, but when i go to burn the project, it asks me to add the file, which i did, but all i get is a file on the dvd of 124k and it won't open or do anything. Rob and Paul: Yes, the PUG has size limitations, but then so does the Pentax Photo Gallery. Many members of this group still submit there, despite the size of the images. I really think that the PUG can serve a purpose for the list. There is something really satisfying about seeing a number of interesting interpretations of the monthly theme, and that can result in good interchanges. I know I learned a lot. For years, before we all got digital cameras, the PUG held the group together. I would like to continue the tradition. There is still time to enter images for June, as well as July and August. I hope that more people will take advantage of that, and re-energize our own little gallery. A measure of progress
In retrospect, I should have waited until today to send the K20 in for repair. Last night a friend was celebrating his 18th birthday at a local blues jam. I had heard that Chris Cain was going to show up, so I kitted myself with both my K100d super, and the K-x. I put the FA77 on the K100 and the 16-50 on the K-x. The difference in the two entry level Pentaxes, side by side, is very noticeable. The focusing indicators in the K100 are a huge win, and I like the feel of the K100 a little bit better. Other than that the K-x is improved in almost every way. I had forgotten how annoying the small K100 buffer was. And the K-x might be cleaner at 6400 than the K100 is at 800. In the lighting last night, the K100 pictures were noticeably less sharp than the K-x, but that could have a lot to do with depth of field and shutter speed. Came as part of a two-lens, entry level kit (the 70-300 is long gone) purchased in 2000 or 2001. Quite sharp for such a low-end lens, and fantastic 1:2 macro (the bokeh's not super, but what's in focus looks great). Comes with caps and hood. I'd like, oh, $30 for it? I'm flexible. Pentax SMC AF 35-70 f2.8. This lens was the counterpart to the ME-F. Combined, they were the first autofocus camera to reach production: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_ME_F . I have no idea if my lens' autofocus works, since I've never found an ME-F to test it on. I've never even taken a picture with the lens, so I can't describe its photographic capabilities. Again, I'm flexible. M42 Tele-Takumar 200mm f/5.6. Can't tell you much of anything about this lens. Comes with a hood and rear cap, but no front cap. Seriously, the mouths of most fish are a bony construction backed by a thin film that seems able to take a hook without significant damage. Since men have been fishing with hooks for perhaps millions of years that my well be a product of evolution. On the other hand, I don't really see the logic of catch and release. To me, fishing purely for enjoyment is less acceptable on a moral level than fishing for food. However, I have no deep problem either way and have done both. Grace and I plan on hitting the one of the local lakes again next week. We will probably catch only bluegills, thereby helping to thin out an overpopulation. Off Topic: how do you ensure your file backup operations are not corrupt? (windows xp)
Hi all, My backup strategy so far has been very basic: I have a couple windows xp computers and a couple of external drives. I schedule a backup of files from my official set of files to my external drive. And I also manually copy the files from time to time to some other drive. This was mostly working fine but a while ago I realized a bunch of files were corrupt, and I have no idea when or how they got corrupted. There are 2 symptoms of corruption: 1. both thumbnail and full image will not open 2. thumbnail will display, but full image will not open The scarier symptom is when the thumbnail appears to be fine but is in fact corrupt, because there is no easy way to verify if the files were backed up successfully. Anyway: is there any way that you can verify if a jpeg file is working correctly / not corrupt? Is there a way to verify that your copy operation was successful? (I have no evidence that the copy operation is what corrupted my files, so maybe I should just continue on with my copy operations and trust that they are okay). What messages do you get? Are these PEFs, JPGs, or what? What tool are you trying to use to open them? How are you backing up? Since you're just copying to an external drive, you can always do a file-by-file comparison afterwards. Anyway: is there any way that you can verify if a jpeg file is working correctly / not corrupt? Is there a way to verify that your copy operation was successful? For the command-line inclined on Windows, the comp or fc commands will do it, or simply add /v to the (x)copy command to start with. Similar options are available for Linux and Mac, too. For those preferring GUIs, there are a variety of free software tools out there for any given platform that will compare the files after copying. WinDiff is one for Windows. (I have no evidence that the copy operation is what corrupted my files, so maybe I should just continue on with my copy operations and trust that they are okay). If it ain't verified, it ain't a backup. I really think that the PUG can serve a purpose for the list. There

That's a pity because the PUG is a permanent gallery and it's good fun

My take. Someone at Kodak doesn't think the this technology will be

Any decent backup software will give you the option of doing a read-after-write check, which means the software reads each block back after it has written it, comparing them to make sure the write was successful. It should also give a choice about what to do if the raw check fails - e.g. retry, continue, ignore - and send you a message about it, on the screen, in an email or maybe a series of cryptic beeps. You should check your copy operation thoroughly before you decide to just continue with it. I run xcopy as a scheduled task rather than backup or some other specialised software because it's simple and puts an exact copy on the backup drive rather than some humungous file in a non-obvious format, and is easy to restore. Regretted it ever since. film that seems able to take a hook without significant damage. Since men
have been fishing with hooks for perhaps millions of years that my well be a
product of evolution. On the other hand, I don't really see the logic of
catch and release. To me, fishing purely for enjoyment is less acceptable on
a moral level than fishing for food. However, I have no deep problem either
way and have done both. Grace and I plan on hitting the one of the local
lakes again next week. We will probably catch only bluegills, thereby
helping to thin out an overpopulation.

The Tammy has been my go-to zoom for the last 2 years. 28mm isn't wide on APS-C, but I much prefer a normal-to-long-tele zoom than a wide-to-short-tele, but that's just me. --M. I usually prefer a camera as well. And when I took my kids fishing back in the
eighties, we rarely caught anything. (Although my oldest son and I caught two
big rainbow trout in Rocky Mountain National Park one year when I was there on
production. We had a condo, so I cooked them and we ate them. Spectacular.) But
last time out Grace and I caught and released about a dozen bluegills that were
just a bit too small for the table. She was thrilled. And all the bluegills
seemed to swim off as though nothing had happened.
I just wrote an article about crossbow hunting for the in-house magazine of a
major sports store. I found it depressing. All the literature on the web talks
about the kill and a through shot, which means through the heart of the
deer. Kind of gross and extremely unfeeling. What's worse is that I'm sure I
there are a lot of deer running around out there with arrows in their butt or
worse. I avoided the gross terminology and focused on the equipment and
location scouting. I would rather not write in that genre, but it was for a
major client, and I can't pick and choose if I want to continue to earn a
living.

You might want to check on the health of your hard drive. A failing HD
will lead to all kinds copy failures.

Monsoon Sky Redux
A few days I submitted a pic of an Arizona monsoon sky and got some nice comments, but it was suggested that showing some ground would improve the image. Well the sky gods cooperated again this evening and I took a few with a wider lens and included some ground clutter. The building on the lower left is the same one as in the previous pic. Frank I know what you mean - I had a check and the focal length was 90mm, that lens does get better OOF at the longer focal lengths. The last regular home game of the season is tomorrow night and I will switch to TAv mode to get max aperture and still have some control over shutter speed. Obviosly I also need to zoom in more on the upper bodies and the ball to help get that isolating effect. It is a bit more difficult, but then that's why we practice. Like it says in my blog, I bought from a fellow PDMLess. She probably cherry picked it because I simply refer to it as a set of excellent albeit regular f/2.8 primes. Sharp across the whole focal length range and at all apertures. Slightly punchy warm colors though it renders beautiful blues too. Sometimes slightly nervous bokeh. But not always. All around - excellent optic. And mind you, I have no plans of selling it should Sigma and/or Pentax zoom lenses prove as good. I have shot with it using *istD, K10D and now K-7 - so that if you wish I can provide you with RAW samples of any of these cameras. And given the multitude of shots I made - likely most of the regular shooting situations are covered - so you can ask for specific focal length, aperture and motif - I could try to find and send you a sample thereof. Boris P.S. Just a few negative points to balance things out at least somewhat: * Built is good but it is amateur build. Sigma is built in a more sturdy, more solid way. * Zoom creeps some. Not a big deal as it has the zoom lock switch, but still. * Sample variation - if you decide to buy one, check it well before you buy - there are reports of some pretty abysmal samples. * Its stock hood sucks. And I did correct myself by buying FA 20/2.8 not long ago after I was almost forced to buy DA 21/3.2 for the wide lens. I have been hmmm how to put it - told about possible wrongness of this position many times, but I stand by it anyway :-). Paul Paul, I am speaking from experience and very particular need. I do believe that 24 mm on wide end will be enough for that very purpose. You're in principle right but I don't have a flash to cover 16 mm EFOV and kids are really fast, you know. I might be better off with Tammy 17-50/2.8 or something similar but I'd like to give this Sigma lens a fair chance. For outdoors shoots (such as class trips to zoo) Pentax FA 24-90/3.5-4.5 should prove just perfect. Anyways, I am not a zoom kind of person, so that these zoom lenses are for very specific purpose. I had a period of time when I shoot almost exclusively with Tamron (hence the 5,000+ shots in my collection that I made with it), but it passed. Although of course when I go on a shoot with Galia's class, I bring in several hundreds shots, so that the figure grows steadily and surely. Other than that, my by far most used and most favorite lens is A 50/1.2.
