Embracing the digital age.

2010-12-23 Thread Malcolm Smith
For a whole variety of reasons I've been reduced to reading posts, rather
than actively posting but as I know I'm going to be on limited computer time
again over the next week, I wanted to pass my best to you all for Christmas
and the New Year.

Over the last few months I have really thought about the direction I want to
take with photography in 2011, and looked at what I have in the way of
equipment and how often I really use it. As a result, I have had a radical
clear out and sold off all my film cameras, duplicate lenses and nearly all
my non-Pentax equipment. I have also sold on my older Pentax DSLRs and I now
have a K-7 only and no back up camera of any description.

Christmas this year will not bring any photographic gifts my way, but I'm
looking at getting a back up DSLR sometime next year; which Pentax model
that will be I've yet to decide!

Anyway, back to your regular viewing.

Re: Why I shoot primes + Another FA*24 Shot

2010-12-23 Thread paul stenquist

On Dec 23, 2010, at 1:27 AM, Andrew Allen wrote:

Why do I shoot primes? Well, one poster was in-part correct that a
favorite tool becomes ingrained with a person - and I am more
effective with the tool I'm comfortable/happy/proficient with.
Secondly, if I'm going to carry a tool - I want the highest quality
one available for that specific function (focal length); I want the
best combination of speed/IQ/size, and though it isn't tiny, the FA*24
is much smaller than any kit zoom, not to mention f2.8 glass. Another
reason is the 'zone' one gets in when shooting a prime (this is hard
to describe) - the familiarity of the focal length, with enough
practice, leaves one to focus on composition and 'see' the shot
without even lifting the camera to my eye. Though zooms are much
better than they were 30 years ago, they are still large/heavy, don't
encourage movement by the photographer, elicit different reactions
than a small prime, and don't necessarily achieve the 'max IQ' that a
prime like the FA*24 or FA31 can and do.

I am absolutely certain that the IQ achievable with the DA* 16-50/2.8 is, to
the naked eye, indistinguishable from that of the FA* 24. Favorite tool is a
valid reason, and for those who are shooting mainly for personal enjoyment,
being restricted to a single focal length is fine.

  I love shooting with a
compact setup and getting the very very best quality possible out of
my sensor (hence, why I also shoot RAW exclusively).

If you're leaving your lens hood at home, you're not getting the very very best
possible out of your sensor. There will frequently be a minimal amount of
veiling flare when shooting with even the most flare-resistant lens, if you
work without a hood.

 This isn't an
approach that will work for everyone (and it's definitely not the most
convenient), but it's what draws me to Pentax, excites me about Leica,
and fits my approach to photography (primarily artistic). Despite not
being as convenient, there is nothing stopping me from shooting
photo-journalistic (news) shots with a K-5 and a setup of lenses
 covering wide-angle to portrait.

Deadlines and fast changing conditions will stop you. Been there done that --
for more than 25 years.

But I respect your choices.

Paul

I typically keep the FA*24 hood at home because it's excessively
large, easily scratched up, and not really needed for the most part
(the FA*24 doesn't have excessive flare).

I did the same thing a while back. Earlier on, I had a hard time with
digital. I think the take as many as you want devalued the pictures
in my mind. The most difficult part, however, was adjusting to the
lack of prints. It makes no sense since you can have them done at
Walmart if you like, but you had to do it with film whereas it felt
like a waste of money with jpgs. One of my favorite parts of the the
PDML is that you do have a place to show your pictures, and that
provides a nudge to complete the process and get your shots to the
show the world stage.

Also, grab your telephoto and shoot that other bench and great barren dead tree

OK Rick, you shamed me into it.

Here is a modified version of the Two Benches photo.
It's smaller and I played with the sliders (curves) in
 LR3.3.

 The original is here...

In between these two photos you will find 2 versions of

one big original and one enhanced a bit with curves/sliders
 in LR3.3.

PESO - Great Blue

might have been a better choice, although 40% of the 60-250 frame might be
better than 80% of the A400 frame, as the latter tends to CA.

VESO The Gaskell Ball

2010-12-23 Thread Larry Colen
Here are some videos I took with the K-x last weekend at the Gaskell Ball, a
victorian style dance held every two months in Oakland. The quality of video is
proof that I am not Cotty. It shows how the video works in less than ideal
conditions. The biggest problem seems to be the quality of the audio. They
were mostly shot with my sigma 20/1.8 with the focus set somewhere beyond 5
feet and I just relied on depth of field to get something recognizable.

The dance Congress of Vienna was actually choreographed in the 1970s (IIRC)
by John Hertz, and is meant to be in the style of dancing of the English
Regency, which would be rather retro for the Victorian time period portrayed at
Gaskells.

Did you get a Gitzo then? I'll take delivery of one next week or so as
part of my effort to build a business around used photo gear. Having
heard so many good things about them, I look forward to giving it a
good try before selling it again, hopefully at a profit.

Yep, I got a 3530LS. I had a Gitzo 1548 that was bought solely for my
600mm. It had an annoying feature that in led to my selling it - the 3
section legs rotated when you tried to lock/unlock them - it required two
hands on each leg to extend/or retract them. With the 3530LS they
incorporated so called 'G' locks that only required one hand to
extend/retract. A definite improvement which makes you wonder why this issue
wasn't noticed by them in the development stage - I mean they've been making
them for years.

Anbother reason to get the 3530 was that it weighed significantly less than
the 1548 (both carbon fiber)
and in fact weighed less than my everyday Bogen (that I sold to a list
member) - so I went from two tripods down to one and with what I sold both
tripods for It was a wash on the 3530.

Out of the box the 3530 had some build in issues also - the rubber feet
needed to be 'Loctited' in as they would back out during usage and I'd
probably have lost one before I was told to look out for it. It also had an
improperly torqued top bolt that allowed the top plate to to move out of
position that would have eventually detatched from the tripod legs with head
and lens attached.

A lot of money for these Gitzos but I feel I'll never have to but another
tripod.

Cheers

As I recall, our fast moving streams keep going all the way down to temps below
zero fahrenheit. So they may find a place to fish all winter long. But I'm not
sure about that. Some of the real fast moving streams are very shallow.

Thanks Ecke. I barked like a dog, whistled and stamped my feet, trying to get
him to fly away, and he didn't budge. So I figured I'd move upstream a bit and
try to get a shot from a further forward position. Of course, as soon as I
lowered the camera to move, he took flight. It was quite a sight with his
five-foot wingspan, but I didn't get it.

Re: PESO: Baltimore Old and New

2010-12-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
It's not that old! It was built in 1917, and modeled after the
Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, by the inventor of the once popular
headache remedy. It now houses studios for the visual and literary
arts.

Thanks for looking.

I'm Back!

2010-12-23 Thread John Sessoms
Arrived back here in Asheboro about 4:00am EST. Flight out of Beijing
was delayed 3 hours, but fortunately, my connecting flight from Newark
to RDU was delayed 3-1/2 hours, so I didn't have to struggle with missed
connections getting back home.

Looks like I've only got about 56 digests to catch up.

Pentax dealer at PC Mall in Nanjing had the 645D for 65,900 RMB (~
10,500 USD), but didn't have it in stock. They could get it for me in a
couple of days. I was leaving for Beijing that evening.

Moot because I didn't have that much money on me, but I would have liked
to just get to see it maybe hold it for a few minutes. 8-D

Received a couple of emails while I was gone that my Gawker password has
been compromised ... didn't even know I had a Gawker password.

I don't find it on my list.
