GESO: Coast To Coast
Another gallery of sweaty athletes finishing one of the world's great multisport races, 243km of hurt across the South Island of NZ. Unfortunately I don't have a media pass, a helicopter and a couple of 645Ds to cover this event with. So as usual I went down to the finish and waited around for competitors to come in. I struggled a bit with the light which went from being too contrasty to too flat. The shadow/highlight tool is a life saver. http://www.multisport.net.nz/nz-multisport-photos/1743-coast-to-coast-2012-photos.html The one-day race (people with red numbers) was won by Richard Ussher, and his wife Elina won the women's race, which may help to explain the last photo. They are both pretty much at the top the multisport world and it was nice to see them both win this time (she came second last year). The lady in #7 is Neelusha Memon who is the first legally blind person to ever complete the race. These two links will give you more info about her if you're interested. http://www.multisport.net.nz/multisport-news/race-news/1711-speights-coast-to-coast-neelusha-memon.html http://limitlesswithsupport.com/ And the guy in #12 is Mike Ward who has competed in the race 29 times. Not bad when this year is the 30th anniversary. Cheers, Dave PS if you want bigger images let me know and I'll run it through Jalbum. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Comments on the new lenses and Optio WG-2
And once again I have to ask - where is the 1.4x SDM teleconverter? They have planned it for years, what makes it is so hard to design / produce? 560mm sounds nice in theory, but in practice I rather would carry 60-250mm or 300mm (which I do have already) + a little high-quality TC. Pentax's waterproof cameras have always been great (for PS cameras, of course), and this one has all the features I want. I'm particularly glad they added another light to the macro lights around the lens. Now the lighting should be a bit more even all the way around the object. OT: The real danger of cat pics
Tumblr is headed by groups of New York gays and nerds, and the head honchos seem to really like cats. You can't have a moral website with cats, that's an inherent contradiction. However, cats are extremely persuasive and have turned many people to the dark side. I think it was announced with the lens. But then again I haven't seen any official, specifications on the new converter yet. Maybe it's a screw motor pass trough or an A only style. But we don't know yet. On 2/12/2012 4:49 AM, Margus Männik wrote: And once again I have to ask - where is the 1.4x SDM teleconverter? I'd just like to add my two cents about all the new products Pentax has announced lately. (item list taken from http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/02/07/Pentax_In-development_lenses) 1. smc PENTAX-D FA645 90mm F2.8 I'm glad to see Pentax is showing more support for the 645D. I'll likely never own one, but it's nice to see it's not just a flash in the pan. 2. smc PENTAX-DA 560mm F5.6 OMG I WANT THIS LENS. Even though it's a stop slower than my K 500mm 4.5, I would kill for autofocus on a long tele like this. Too bad I'll probably never be able to afford it. However, if the price isn't too horrible, I might sell the K 500 and put that money towards this one. I'd sure miss the rifle sights on the K 500, though... 3. smc PENTAX-DA 50mm F1.8 I've been waiting for a lens like this for a long time. Even though I'd prefer the 55mm 1.4, there's no way I can afford it. I'll probably sell my FA 50mm 1.4 (and maybe my A 50mm 1.2, which I never use) to get this lens. 4. Q lenses TELEPHOTO ZOOM and MOUNT CAP LENS Although I'll probably not get a Q (too expensive!), I'm intrigued by this mount cap lens that is described thusly: Eye-catching “body mount cap” design, along with a toy-camera-like visual effect. Does anyone else think it sounds like a pinhole lens? 5. A lens for the PENTAX K-01 This unnamed pancake lens reminded me to give my opinion of the K-01: What an ugly brick of plastic! Get rid of that designer, Pentax, and hire someone who knows how to make a camera. 6. Adapter Q for K mount lens This product was inevitable, but I'm glad they're releasing it relatively soon after the Q's introduction. I'm curious why it needs a built-in shutter unit, though. 7. Optio WG-2 I want this camera. Seriously, I'm going to start saving for it as soon as I get back from Melbourne this May. Pentax's waterproof cameras have always been great (for PS cameras, of course), and this one has all the features I want. I'm particularly glad they added another light to the macro lights around the lens. Now the lighting should be a bit more even all the way around the object. As long as none of these things I hope to buy turn out to be as much of a lemon as my DA* 16-50, I'll be happy. John Celio -- http://www.jacelio.com -- Don't lose heart! Re: PESO - Snow on Lakeshore
I have very dim memories as a kid in Montreal of riding on the trams (as they called them there). Somewhere around 1960 they ripped them up. Toronto is one of the rare North American cities that resisted the urge to modernize. I type this post on my mobile heading into town on the Queen Street car! :-) Our rolling stock is hopelessly outdated now but later this year we start taking delivery of new Bombardier streetcars. Two things that I'm not likely to see here are snow and streetcars (trams as we call them). At one stage Sydney had one of the largest tram networks in the world but in the 1950s the politicians decided that buses were the future and ripped the entire system up. We now have a small and relatively new light rail line to the inner western suburbs and there is continual talk of reinstating trams to the centre of Sydney, but I'm not holding my breath. We had a light snow a couple of weeks ago (now all melted) and I thought the Long Branch Car looked kind of nice heading through it: http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2012/02/snow-on-lakeshore.html Hope you enjoy. Moore's law has yet to meet the law of diminishing returns. Heh, we did the same thing at about the same time (maybe a few years later). Then in the 90s they laid some new rails for a tourist loop at massive cost. They'd just about finished the first extension a year ago but it's all on hold now. I recently saw a photo of a suburban street where the old tram lines were re-exposed by earthquake damage. In that case they'd left the old rails in place and just threw a layer of tar seal over the top. I'd actually like them to bring light rail back into the city and make it useful. Even better if they could figure out a way of getting rail out to the suburbs but I know that's a pipe dream. I always hated the buses in town because they're so noisy. A couple PESOs from this weekend
I joined my friend Candice for another Salton Sea trip this weekend. A couple of my more interesting photos were from the night before, and my trip home this evening. An attempt at Japanese calligraphy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6868136207/in/set-72157629297628485/ There are some obvious difficulties I'll need to work out, but I think the technique shows promise And following in Dave's footsteps: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6868174851/in/set-72157629297714435/ I was driving past Arroyo Grande tonight, and unlike last night when I meant to try this, both the weather and the sunset were gorgeous. I took a suboptimal route to the beach, nearly missed sunset, and it wasn't until I thought I was done shooting, and was walking back to the car that I remembered the steel wool and chain in the trunk. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
