I went to the PPG to vote on some image tonight. Then I checked on my
latest submissions, even though they were all in the queue for less
than a week.

To my surprise, all my submissions had been either approved or
declined already, even those submitted only 5 days ago!

So, if anyone is interested i submitting to the PPG, now is a good
time. You will get decisions on your images in a week or less.

Re: PESO - A Beautiful Demoiselle

2012-06-12 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Thanks, Dan. I think it's interesting, too.

Unfortunately I may have jumped the gun on the identification. To my
(uneducated) eye it looks identical to a beautiful demoiselle, but it seems
that's a European species. I'm looking (so for without success) for North
American species that look similar. Could it be an alien species?

Anyway, still looking for an ID on this beauty.

He'd been through a lot, including having been beaten and left for dead

This is number 13 in the series "Print-a-Day for 30 Days."

There are quite a few musicians that perform at the open air farmer's
markets. This photo of a young violinist is one of my favorites.

Some of you have seen an earlier version of this photo. I decided to
include it in the print-a-day project because of the big areas of blue
sky. In the past, with other printers, I've had trouble with this
type of gradient. There can also be an issue with blue and cyan. The
representation of this part of the color space can differ between
monitor and paper.

I added the vignette to help define the border. I had not felt that
was necessary until I saw the printed version. Now that I've seen it,
I prefer the version with the vignette.

The final print and a nice smooth gradient with no banding. The sky
color was very close. It seems just slightly more saturated.

Maybe I should head back around dusk and try some shots when the light is
better.

The dynamic range of the K-5 is impressive. I did a 3 x 1.3 stops bracket of
most of the shots, and by the time I processed them in lightroom it was hard to
tell the difference between them. Most of the reason I'll bracket is in case I
ever want to process the photos for HDR, but it looks like it takes a lot more
than that to exceed the DR of the K-5 at low ISO.

I love it! Beautifully framed. Sharp in all the right spots, oof in all the

I shot a concert on Friday - an annual benefit thrown by local musicians. The
show is always 100% David Bowie covers, and the audience is invited to get done
up (makeup, hair) as part of the festivities. Just thought I'd explain the
paint on the woman's face.

ANYWAYS - because of the fun getups that people wear to the show, it's always a
treat from time to time to turn the camera around and look at the audience. I
try to do that, actually, at most every show I attend.

This one worked for me:

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2012/rebel_rebel_ix/content/IMGP0543_large.html

The K-7 handled itself pretty well shooting at pretty much ISO 1250 the whole
night, but I would love to have a K-5 sometime for this kind of work.
Seriously.

Fw: PESO: Eagle Pair

2012-06-12 Thread kwaller
Back in the 80's I had to go to Alaska to see Bald Eagles, lately I've seen
them all over Michigan. A couple of weeks ago I photographed a pair of
adults in front of my place in Traverse City. A few weeks ago while
returning downstate, we were buzzed by an adult - couldn't have been more
than 25 feet from the car as we were traveling around 70mph. Unfortunately
most of these sightings were totally out of the blue and there was no way to
set up and capture. It has made me more likely to keep the 600 in the car.

Re: Silly Magnum

2012-06-12 Thread Christine Aguila
I agree with Bob about Chim, and all I'll add is that anything by the original
four speaks more to the spirit of Magnum in my view. Admittedly, that's, in
part, a nostalgic view, but I'm gonna stick to it any way.

Organizations have a right to get their name out there, and if social media
works, go for it, and if the young are using it, I can see value there, though
sole reliance on social media would be very silly indeed, but they're probably
not going to do that.

So no harm in letting the twits get on with it.

Not directly. They have very different optical formulas, the F shares
it's optical design with the M and A 28mm f2.8, I hate to say it but
I've always heard that they were somewhat inferior, especially to the K

There are detailed discussions of them on Stan, old lens comparison site.

Come on - you can't expect us to respond to what you actually wrote - this
is the PDML. But I'll give it a go.

I agree about them leading by the nose, but I would expect anyone on their
mailing list, or tweeting list or whatever these things are called to have a
bit more wit about themselves than to be led. Especially to that photo
which, great as it is, is not truly representative of Magnum, at least in my
opinion. It would be impossible for me to choose a single picture, or even a
single body of work, but if you held a gun to my head and forced me to
choose something that was most representative of Magnum (which I know is not
what they asked), I would probably go for something by Chim Seymour from the
post-war reconstruction.

I don't do any of this twittering nonsense, but I've received 2 emails today
from Magnum, so someone in their communications team must have woken up. One
of them is for a very interesting looking exhibition at the gallery in Paris
about Algeria 1962 - it's 50 years since the end of the war with France, and
independence. This has been a strong theme of the last couple of terms of my
French cinema class, so very a propos.

purchasers of images are probably to be found among the twitterati,
so it would be a good idea to raise Magnum's visibility there.

Nice George and good use of backlight too. Not too sure about the
vignette - I wonder whether a tighter crop on the left and at the top,

PESO - PAD - Street Musician - Print-a-Day-13

2012-06-12 Thread George Sinos

OT: Silly Magnum

2012-06-12 Thread Chris Mitchell

I just saw the following tweet from Magnum

"What's your favorite photo from the Magnum archive? Tweet @MagnumPhotos with
the hashtag #MyFavPhoto."

Inane and wrong on so many levels, not least of which is how do you choose a
favourite from so many great photographers, so many genres, such a wide
timespan? On top of it all they said "and here's an example" and linked to
McCurry's Afgan Girl. Indeed a great picture, but a bit of a lead by the nose I
think. I could go on, but I won't. Perhaps I've been taking too much of my
grumpy old git medicine but it would be interesting to hear what you all think
though

Awesome photos. I like the ones shot through the round window, they look like
some gigantic physics experiment. Also the lightning flashes, that must look
amazing from up there.

Re: PESO: Happy audience

2012-06-12 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting Charles Robinson :

I shot a concert on Friday - an annual benefit thrown by local
musicians. The show is always 100% David Bowie covers, and the
audience is invited to get done up (makeup, hair) as part of the
festivities. Just thought I'd explain the paint on the woman's face.

ANYWAYS - because of the fun getups that people wear to the show,
it's always a treat from time to time to turn the camera around and
look at the audience. I try to do that, actually, at most every
show I attend.

This one worked for me:

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2012/rebel_rebel_ix/content/IMGP0543_large.html

The K-7 handled itself pretty well shooting at pretty much ISO 1250
the whole night, but I would love to have a K-5 sometime for this
kind of work. Seriously.

Nice work - wonderful expression on the girl's face.

I think the square crop is an improvement.
