The moth - I desperately want to kick somebody in the nuts
So I opened the FA135 up last night. On the outside it looked like Pentax service had never even gone inside. On the inside - sure they had been there. I bought the lens new from the local dealer around 2002, it was the last one in stock here but it was still new and from the dealer. Somebody had tried to force the back element open with the wrong instrument, markings on the barrel would suggest they failed. Also the moth stuff inside. Removed the aperture thingies only to find one of the biggest screws in there was badly damaged by somebody with background in changing wheels, not servicing fine instruments. Jackass, Philips power drivers should never ever be used on JIS screws. Aperture spring being glued in place and not swapped out for a new one is a minor nitpick in comparison. Didn't want to take it apart completely - helicoids and all - so I tried to unscrew the rear element with a properly softened large area of contact tool (just dumb oversized pliers with rubber pads) and it worked. So I removed the empty pupal case (no sight of moth itself) and all the debris. Here's a picture for those of you who got this far: http://foto.ri-ki.lv/details.php?image_id=104 Properly cleaning the lens would require total disassembly and even then I don't know if it would be any good. Those monsters weave their cocoons and strands of that weave are between elements even further inside the lens. Even if I could open it up that far I don't know if I could completely remove everything. So that's it probably for this lens. I will test it against my other sample but there is no real reason for me to use it anyway when I have the other one. I don't see a good way to clean it so well that there is no sign of the moth ever being there so it can't be sold either. I might go through the adventure of disassembling it completely, cleaning it and putting it all together but I don't see that happening before the kids grow up :) Pentax should probably know about the sad state of service in Europe but I don't see a way to get this information to anybody who cares. If service at Pentax authorized service centers takes half a year and is performed by idiots who only make things worse, somebody should care, no? How to clean hot-shoe flash contacts?
In the recent past, my flash (Metz AF58-1) in combination with K-7 developed a problem. In some cases, I do not get the flash-ready confirmation symbol in the viewfinder. In other cases, even if I do get that confirmation at first, the flash (in PTTL mode) goes off full capacity, as if the PTTL did not work, yielding extremely overlit images. In those cases, often, on the subsequent shots, there is no flash confirmation symbol. All those problems can be fixed by tweaking the hotshoe in the socket (sliding it slightly in or out), but it takes a few times to find the right position. I am thinking if this can be fixed by cleaning the contacts. What are the options of cleaning the contacts besides the obvious of using a q-tip soaked in isopropanol? Any other thoughts on what else might be causing such hot-shoe issues? Re: How to clean hot-shoe flash contacts?
Bruce, Thank you. An electronic contact cleaner spray might be a good idea. I didn't think about it. Just a quick comment about isopropanol. You brought up an important point that can be overseen often. However, for the purpose of full disclosure, err. information: The amount of residue left behind by an evaporating solvent depends on the solvent, but even more depends on the purity of the solvent. The 70% isopropanol that is sold at a pharmacy as rubbing alcohol probably has plenty of impurities that don't evaporate. High purity (e.g. spectroscopic grade) solvents leave very small residue (between 1ppb and 1ppm, depending on the solvent). Isopropanol of high purity grades is frequently used for cleaning Ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) components for the reason that it leaves very small amount of residue on the surface, and also that it can be removed by baking the surface. Methanol that is used for the same purpose, while being more volatile overall, IIRC, may leave a bit more impurities behind. Many typical wafer cleaning procedures include IPA (isopropanol) or methanol as the last step, - to remove residues left by other solvents, e.g. acetone. Re: PESO: Local Club Scene
Thanks, Bruce. The hot pixels are at about 1 o'clock and 3 o'clock in relation to the third whiskey bottle in the line -- in the dark space. There are a couple of blue pixels that don't appear to be from a light source. I can see them in the smaller version of the image, but they are much more pronounced at full-resolution. Not a problem as far as cloning. They could be the result of the conditions and may not show up in other shots. From what I gather, the K20D has exhibited this issue in certain circumstances. Hopefully, pixel-mapping won't be necessary. Thanks again! -- Walt On 11/13/2012 10:54 AM, Bruce Walker wrote: That's got a great mood. Where are you seeing hot pixels? Re: How to clean hot-shoe flash contacts?
Igor, thanks. I was assuming that the majority of folks on the list would be in possession of rubbing alcohol rather then spectroscopic grade. :-) But in any event, part of what makes contact cleaner a better idea than either pure or impure isopropyl is what it _does_ leave on the surfaces: anti-oxidant lubricant. That prevents the contact surfaces from re-oxidizing right away. On Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 1:01 PM, Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org wrote: Bruce, Thank you. Potential enablement: Sears camera w/ R-K mount lenses
So, I've spotted an ad on a local bulletin board in which someone is selling a Sears SLR with four lenses (a prime and three zooms -- though I'm not sure of the range) for $50. From what I gather, Sears K-mount lenses generally have an extra pin that sometimes causes them to get stuck when mounted on Pentax bodies. I've seen some instructions for removing that pin, and wonder if anyone can offer advice before I decide to tackle the chore. Also, are Ricoh K-mount lenses fairly decent glass? There are also two faint white dots that could be either hot pixels or very faint specular highlights. FWIW, the red line that accompanied the hot pixel on my K20D seems to have gone away again, and what appeared to be a blob of several bad pixels together in one spot has now become a single hot pixel. I'm able to remove it with a very tiny spot healing brush, so I haven't investigated pixel mapping. I'll be watching this thread. From: Bruce Walker That's got a great mood. Where are you seeing hot pixels? Perhaps only visible in the full-rez file? I can't comment on hot-pixel fixing in the K20D. Haven't seen any, so never tried it. RE: How to clean hot-shoe flash contacts?
From: Igor Roshchin In the recent past, my flash (Metz AF58-1) in combination with K-7 developed a problem. Re: Potential enablement: Sears camera w/ R-K mount lenses
I can't tell for sure from your original post, but if it did not SAY a lens mount in the original post, it is quite possible that you will find it is a screwmount camera/lenses. Tomioka made the 55mm f1.4 that was found on many of those cameras (see: http://mattsclassiccameras.com/sears-ricoh_tls.html ) and I've also seen Mamiya-made variants (still have one with slow blades, if memory serves). If there is a K in the model name on the body, it is likely your K-R mount. You could still find a 50mm f1.4 on there, like this: http://mattsclassiccameras.com/sears_ks2.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Potential enablement: Sears camera w/ R-K mount lenses
Well, that and the fact that I have a thing about old, manual-focus glass. :) I'm mostly concerned about getting one jammed on a body and going into hysterics, and secondarily, completely screwing up the lenses in the effort to remove the culpable pin. At the price, at least I won't be out much. And I'd really like to get a replacement for my old Tokina 28-200 SZ-X 3.5-5.3. I really liked that lens, but it's just falling to pieces. Something in that focal range would be nice. Fingers crossed. -- Walt On 11/13/2012 2:53 PM, Darren Addy wrote: Well, that camera was aperture priority automatic, so the lenses will likely not be A lenses, which gives it a bit of hit value-wise. Any kit with multiple lenses for $50 is worth looking at, but unless you've got a name zoom in their (like a Tamron, perhaps) or the prime isn't a f1.4, then I would think the deal is a bit marginal (depending on the zoom ranges of the lenses included and how they fit your current line-up). Of course, it is possible that some of the lenses will be A lenses that were obtained later and just weren't used in A mode on this particular camera body. I actually have used a small cotton swab with the tip dipped in Brasso to restore operation to badly corroded contacts, it can be a bit messy to clean up if it gets in crevices but if done carefully it removes the oxides without doing too much damage. Enablement/Replacement!
On Friday a package arrived in the post. In it was a K10D with 18-55 WR zoom. As a result of a below market value transaction made with a list member I have secured a replacement for my old K10D lost last month. In fact, this is more than a replacement; the body is in spectacular condition and the zoom is the WR version. As I don't shy away from shooting in soggy conditions this will be a real plus for me. As much as I love my venerable *istD, it is nice to have the more extensive feature set of the K10D. I should mention that several approached me with kind offers of below market value equipment. Thanks to each of you. Oops.. Sorry, - it looks like it's an old news... .. and a bunch of stores have had it at about those prices for about 2 weeks (including Amazon, Walmart [black body only], Pentaxwebstore.com, and even Bestbuy). BTW, for those who are concerned about brick-and-mortar stores selling Pentax equipment, - Bestbuy came close: it's a brick-and-mortar store that sells Pentax equipment online (only).
