have various aspect ratios the images get gives weird weights so that
they all lock together to make the page consistent, a choice of page
layout would be nice, it could be that difficult to accommodate.

2013-05-21 Thread John Sessoms

Didn't the CEO of Yahoo announce they weren't going to fuck up Tumbler?
I guess they had to do something to sublimate the urge.

From: Bruce Walker

That's not the half of it. They've also moved most of the pro
features over to the Free account level and made the paid, ad-free,
level twice what Pro used to be -- now $50/year. The implication is
they don't really want anyone to get paid accounts, they want to show
ads to everyone now and change the revenue model to ad-driven.

On the same day it was announced that Yahoo! bought Tumblr. Just
frikken great. There goes yet another semi-decent photo-sharing
service.

Sigh. Finally being forced to hand-build a website. What a waste of time.

skin) is hard light -- a point source like the sun -- coming from
 right angles.

A classic example of this is your picture of David and Glenn.
Note how the hard side lighting brings out every feature of their skin.

This is why I hate to say something is good or bad for photography,
I much prefer to say things like side lighting will show every detail
in the skin, something most women dislike. Or, a 77mm lens will show less
of the background than a 50mm lens, so that you need to shoot from
further back.

Re: K-5 II body: $778 (Amazon Reseller)

2013-05-21 Thread Darren Addy
I'll repost my reply from the previous thread, Bipin:
- - -
Well, the package arrived and I made a video of the unboxing. Then I
contacted Pentax Imaging and recorded the chat session via video. (I
typed out everything I wanted to say first in Notepad so I could
quickly copy and paste it). So I'm fully documented all the way
around.
: )

Here's what I got: A genuine Pentax K-5 II with 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 ED
AL [IF] DC WR **BOX** with the lens removed and warranty card removed.
Everything else was there in new condition, and I had the Serial
Number Card for the K-5II 18-135WR Kit. Interestingly, the Pentax
box was damaged pretty significantly on the side that held the
18-135mm lens. I would suggest that there are places that buy new
damaged box goods from retailers at a substantial discount. They
maximize their profit by splitting up the goods and selling them
separately.

What I ordered is in flawless shape. Took two exposures and the
shutter count is revealed as 2. So I contacted Pentax Imaging and
used their Live Chat window. Got a Matthew P. as my rep. What I
said:

Hi Matthew. Hello, I purchased a NEW K-5 II body from Amazon and I was
excited to see it arrive today. When I opened the box, it contained
what I purchased but came in a Pentax box labeled K-5 II and DA
18-135mm f3.5-5.6 AL [IF] DC WR. There was no lens in the box,
meaning that I did get what I ordered. The body appears new and the
shutter count was at 1 on my first exposure. However, there was no
WARRANTY CARD inside the package.

I did get a Serial Number card that appears to have had something
torn off (perforations at the top and bottom). The serial number is
4668328 and the number beneath the bar code is 4668328220607. It is
for a K-5II 18-135WR KIT. I have never had a problem with any of the
previous Pentax cameras or lenses that I have purchased (K200D, K-x,
K-5) but the lack of a warranty card is troubling. Is there some way
that I can still register it and get it

covered under warranty?

His answer:

Matthew P: I would return it. Id change retailers. But, yes, as long
as you have a copy of the proof of purchase, you're covered under
warranty. You do not need a warranty card
Darren Addy: USA warranty?
Matthew P: Yes
Matthew P: 1 year from the date of purchase
Darren Addy: So if I have a problem, who do I contact? (Just to be clear)
Matthew P: Pentax Technical Support @ 800-877-0155. Or get into chat.
We're here Mon-Fri 9:30AM-6:30PM Eastern Standard Time.
Matthew P: Contact us!
Darren Addy: OK. Thank you very much, matthew. I will warn people from
this retailer. Thx!

So consider yourself warned.
For my part, I'm happy with the deal I got. My main concerns were: 1)
Is it really new, 2) Does it come with everything it should, 3) Am I
covered by a USA Pentax warranty. Since the answers to all are yes
I'm going to keep it. It seems pretty amazing to get a K-5 II for over
$160 LESS than I got my K-5 body about 1 year ago. Stupifying, even.
: )

You see a lot of things working in a dive bar like the club where I work
-- the best and worst of people. The guy on the left is David -- a bear
of a man and local tough man contest legend. I've known him since I was
probably 12 years old, and when he's sober, he's one of the most
softhearted people you could ever hope to meet. But, when he drinks,
he's extremely tough to deal with.

The guy on the right is Glenn (the same Glenn with the full beard and
world-weary expression I've posted photos of before). He's one of
David's best friends. And, to be sure, he's no walk in the park when
he's drunk.

Well, this particular night, they were both drunk, and David decided it
was time to let Glenn know who the bull of the herd is.

They go through this little ritual on a fairly regular basis and it
makes for some pretty long nights at work sometimes.

Re: OT Well Flickr has gone and screwed the pooch

2013-05-21 Thread Christine Nielsen
Ah well... I decided to not renew my pro account last September, and I
haven't missed it at all. I don't really do much with the
community there, I just used it as a place to park photos that I
wanted to share with specific people like the PDML. Or family
who aren't on fb. (you know, old folks! lol) What's interesting is
that, in going to a regular account, flickr limited me to displaying
only the most recent 200 photos... I thought, fine, I didn't really
need/want the rest of them out there, anyway, that will save me the
hassle of deleting. Well, now all those old photos are back in my
photostream. Goody.

Otherwise, I use zenfolio as a website, and I've built a little corner
of that for displaying/sharing photos... I think I'll be using that
from now on, but that's the direction I was headed in anyway...

3) There is a good chance that these are some of the best pictures
LeeAnn has of herself.

4) These are good, but I got some advice on how to do even better

I don't see any downside here.

Thanks for the perspective, Larry. And, yes, LeeAnn said they were the
best photos she's ever had taken.

There is one downside in all of it, though. She moved to Georgia this
past weekend. Though, she does have family in the area (her mom) and is

So, I have that to look forward to. In the meantime, I have my eye on

This is one of those cases where word of mouth really helps.

Put the word out that you are looking for models to practice with,
of any age, shape, size or plumbing. If you make it clear that your
goal is to practice photography, then women will feel more comfortable
that you aren't just a creep (a Guy With a Camera) trying to get them

Also, offer to photograph them *with* their kids. A lot of pretty
young mothers are more interested in photos of their kids, than of
themselves.

Put the word out that you are looking for models to practice with,
of any age, shape, size or plumbing. If you make it clear that your
goal is to practice photography, then women will feel more
comfortable
that you aren't just a creep (a Guy With a Camera) trying to get them
 out of their clothes.

Also, offer to photograph them *with* their kids. A lot of pretty
young mothers are more interested in photos of their kids, than of
 themselves.
I get a lot of requests from women who want photos of/with their kids.
They remind me every time I run into them, but they never seem to
follow

Oh, hell. You don't need to lose any weight, but it has zero effect.

I am very happy with my ASUS transformer TF800. With the keyboard
it makes a very nice netbook. Also with the keyboard it has slots

don't last long so this is a quick snap:

PESO Vulgar struggles

Alright, caption's a stretch. :)

This is a Fern-leaf Dropwort, latin name Filipendula vulgaris. It's
common in Europe but a specialty item in North America and now hard to
get here because it's out of fashion. Ours is struggling after a nasty
winter, so I figured I should document it just in case.
