Most high end bikes don't sport head tube badges any more: they're needless

Nice photo of an interesting badge.

Even a sticker under the clear coat could look good on a modern bike if it had
a nice design. I think mine just has the manufacturers logo there.

Don't get me started on bike aerodynamics. There are a few things about my TT
bike that annoy me... but I still love riding it :)

 From: P.J. Alling

 It doesn't really replace the K-5 it replaces the K-30. I haven't
read the whole thing but it's body specifications are half a step
higher than the K30 with the same image processor and I would assume
image sensor or close enough. That implies a 12 bit/channel images.

The K-5 II retained the Prime II processor because the Prime M though
faster didn't support 14 bit images. Pentax could leave the K-5II/IIs in
their product line for quite a while even with this K50 in the line. The
name does however make further hash of the K naming conventions so, Way
to Go Pentax!!, if that part is true.

If this is real, it'd take the place of the K-5/II/IIs pretty well if
(and only if) they release a higher-end body at the same time.

Also (again, if this is real), I'm glad they got rid of the ugly
concave space above the lens on the K-30.

I use polarizers moderately often, particularly when I want to bring out
clouds or cut reflections.

Sometimes, if I am shooting a scene with extremely wonky color balance, I'll
use a filter to bring the different color channels into better alignment.
For example, some bars will have their stage lights so far into the red, or
maybe yellow, that you can't expose to get enough detail in the blue channel
(or the blue and green channels) without totally blowing out the red channel.

Also, if you do bw with the DSLR, do you use your Yellow, Orange, and Red

Re: Pentax K5 does not recognize Sigma 8-16 lens

2013-06-09 Thread Jos_from_Holland
Thanks for all the responses, I have put them in chronological order below
in this mail.
(My response is slow because I traveled this weekend from Holland to
Switzerland to play a day with my grandchildren, tomorrow (Monday) I'll be
driving back again)
My way of working now is to write the correct lens name manually in
Lightroom in the creator field. This is quite fast as it can be done in
batches
For my lenses without ID (K-lenses and 50mm macro ring) this will always
be manual of course. If, for lenses with ID, it can be automated at import
or afterwards that would be great!
I will see how far I come and probably will ask your help, Gerrit, off
line as you offered.
I think I will be happier if all can be handled in LR and not in another
program like Photome.
Greetz, Jos

Gerrit:
Have you checked with something such as Exif tool? If the info shows there
and not LR, then you might have to use a hex editor to modify cameraraw.dll
to 'add' the lens. I had to do that for my Sigma 18-250 HSM lens. Also had
to add a lens profile to Camera Raw.
-
David Parsons:
IIRC, the 8 and 9 mm issue is a camera limitation, but the lens not
being recognized is a Lightroom problem.
Firmware may be updated to show the correct focal length, but who know
when that will be, it's been an issue for a couple of years.

Lightroom will probably correct itself on the next point release (if
there is one before LR5 is released).

John Francis:
It won't be a camera problem; the camera doesn't do anything with
the lens ID it receives except stuff it into the image EXIF data.

Sigma in the past were notorious for not actually accquiring a
real lens ID code from Pentax, but just masquerading as something
else with approximately the same focal length/aperture, etc.

If they have stopped doing this, and have a unique code for this
lens, then I'd expect the next Lightroom update to recognise the
code and know all about the lens; Adobe will get the information
from Pentax. If Sigma are still playing silly games, though, it's
anybody's guess when (if ever) Lightroom will know what to display.
---
Rob Studdert:
All my new Sigma lenses appear to provide a unique code, I have
written them into PhotoMe
-
Gerrit:
Hoi Jos
I would be willing to help offline with the Camera Raw dll. I will need the
lens ID for each and some other info like the lens name. You might get lucky
and the lens profile exists in LR already, even if LR/Camera Raw don't
recognize the lens. That was/is the situation with my Sigma 18-250 HSM, even
after Adobe twice said they added the lens in updates.
We can even do it in Dutch if you prefer
---
Gerrit:
Hoi Jos
In CameraRaw.dll there is a code 3 44 which maps to Sigma or Tamron Lens. If
your lenses have unique id codes, then you can modify the dll to give them
specific names. If they all use 3 44, then no
E.g. my Sigma 18-250 uses 8 8, not used by other lenses. So I overwrote a
lens I will never own with the correct text string and set it to 8 8.
Presto, my lens is recognized when importing photos.
---
P.Alling:
It's a lens problem. IIRC Sig[nificant} Ma[lfunctions] does not license
lens data from any manufacture and reverse engineers everything so there
are often conflicts between firmware in later Non Sigma cameras and
earlier Sigma lenses. I think sigma offers an update service, but I could
be wrong about that. These problems used to be so prevalent that there
was a web site dedicated to them, it was sometimes fun to read, but seems
to have disappeared a few years ago. I haven't cared enough to see if it
was saved by the Wayback Machine.

2013-06-09 Thread Paul Stenquist
Back when I was a kid, everyone who lived on the block played together,
regardless of age or gender. Haven't seen much of that in recent years. Lots of
play dates and parents who carefully choose friends. But I saw it again today,
with Grace and the neighborhood kids playing water wars in the backyard. The
oldest was 12; the youngest was 4. Boys and girls. Parents not involved, Kids
figuring it out on their own. We can all get along.

Nice cloning, Stan. Now it needs some cloning on the left side to give the
direction of travel the comfort of more space. I think the wave pattern is
consistent enough and of a size that might allow at least a try.
Worthy shot.

Thanks for all the responses, I have put them in chronological order below

(My response is slow because I traveled this weekend from Holland to

My way of working now is to write the correct lens name manually in
Lightroom in the creator field. This is quite fast as it can be done in
 batches
For my lenses without ID (K-lenses and 50mm macro ring) this will always
be manual of course. If, for lenses with ID, it can be automated at import
or afterwards that would be great!
I will see how far I come and probably will ask your help, Gerrit, off
 line as you offered.
I think I will be happier if all can be handled in LR and not in another
 program like Photome.

Hi Jos,

Re: PESO: another merganser portrait (and a Loon)

2013-06-09 Thread Paul Stenquist
I prefer this crop as well. On the loon pic, you might try to pull a little
more shadow detail by tweaking the curves in conversion. But both are nice
shots.

Thanks again Bob S., Paul, Ken, Jack, Ann, Frank and others who viewed the
 original.
A slightly looser crop of the Merganser is here:

Have also added another, a Common Loon in a similar pose:

The Loon was shot with the same setup, but on a monopod this time. A bit
later in the afternoon, more clouds than in yesterday's Merganser shot.

Thanks Paul. I'll do a different crop later. I wanted to crop tightly to
bring out the water drops on the beak and other details. But backing out a

We are spending 10 days or so at the family cabin on a lake in northern
Michigan. So far it has been mostly open up clean up chores, but some
time now and then to sit on the dock and watch the world, and some birds,
 go by.

Technical details: K-5ii with DA*300+F1.7AF tele-extender, hand held,
cropped. I've been lusting recently for a new longer lens, convinced
myself to give this combination a try and save some money. Looks good so
 far . . .

Re: Water Wars

2013-06-09 Thread kwaller

Very cute Paul. Somehow Gracie looks the wetest of them all.

Haven't seen much of this kind of gathering in a long time - doesn't seem
very common nowadays at all, unfortunately.

Back when I was a kid, everyone who lived on the block played together,
regardless of age or gender. Haven't seen much of that in recent years.
Lots of play dates and parents who carefully choose friends. But I saw it
again today, with Grace and the neighborhood kids playing water wars in
the backyard. The oldest was 12; the youngest was 4. Boys and girls.
Parents not involved, Kids figuring it out on their own. We can all get
along.

Stan, the lack of eye detail is a major detraction from an otherwise decent
shot of an elusive bird.

PESO: Luke

2013-06-09 Thread David Mann
Last week was pretty hectic for us. I ran my first marathon, then my wife's
grandfather died, then my mother turned 60 and a friend of mine turned 40.

I am hoping that this week is a bit less interesting.

Anyway, while we were clearing out the room at the rest home, Luke popped in to
keep an eye on us. He used to sleep on a chair in this room as it was nice and
quiet. But now we've taken his chair away and he only has an empty room with a
bed. I feel a bit sorry for him but hopefully his next person will be
cat-friendly.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/632/

In the interests of disclosure, my wife took this on her iPhone. I took one
with my phone but I thought hers was better.

Cheers,
Dave
