My issue with these adapters is that there doesn't seem much point to them if you can get a first party camera body to use your lenses with rather than mounting them onto an adapter and effectively turning them into a third party lens that doesn't work very well. Hmm, point taken. In truth, I would love the FX 14mm but can't spend the money right now. I can afford a used EX-1 and I have the A*85/1.4 sitting in my bag. I tend to use that lens wide open, so the X-E1 would seem to provide a suitable platform on which to receive the photons. Similarly, the 17/4 is a wacky, weird and wonderful lens (anyone here ever used one? it is so much fun) and again, would find use on the X-E1. When I can afford the 14mm then I've got AF and all the delights that brings. Matched up with an X100s, it would be a lovely combination of hardware. I have, both film and digital. It's really a very poorly corrected 22-24mm wide angle on an APS-C sized sensor. Doesn't look that much like a fisheye with that crop. Re: Is there a way to speed up uploads to Flikr?
Your upload speed, like your download speed, is dependent upon your internet connection. A lot of internet service providers give you faster download speed than upload speed. This is to discourage people setting up their own web servers at home (ostensibly). You can check both with any of the online bandwidth speed testers. I like this one: http://www.speedtest.net/ Other than that, you will probably get a little faster REAL speeds if you are using a wired connection, rather than a wireless (bits can tend to get lost or interfered with and error checking makes them need to be sent more than once). An upload client that lets you select a bunch of pictures is much more convenient (and takes less time in the selection process) than those that make you do one at at time. Try using the CNTL-SHIFT button to select a RANGE of images and see if the program will let you do that. Re: Is there a way to speed up uploads to Flikr?
Eric, Darren discussed your link speed, but you may have little control over that if you're in hotels or bunking with someone. So it's not Flickr being slow but rather you have limited upload bandwidth available. So you have to make the best of what you've got and that means reducing the amount of data you are sending. I noticed that you are uploading your full-sized camera images: 2008x3008 pixels. Do you really need to do that? Would 684x1024 be good enough? This depends on who you are uploading these for. I also noticed that your images are noisy (based on your PESO image 20130916-IMGP6886 at 2008x3008). You may not care about a little noise but it makes your JPEGs larger. This is because the more high frequency content in an image the less the JPEG compression algorithms can squeeze it. Noise is useless high frequency content. You're using Lightroom 5 so you should apply some noise reduction to all your images. You can make it a default setting applied during import. After that, well if you can't make the uploads any faster, then at least make them more convenient -- make them run in the background. Since you're using Lightroom, you should configure the builtin Flickr Exporter (uploader). It will let you down-size the uploaded images, compress them more, convert them to sRGB, etc, all automatically during the upload. Then you can simply drag a large selection of images over to the Flickr Exporter and let it rip. Hope that helps, Eric. He found it sitting in the trash bin, just thrown out, when he was going to the car to drive over to the cafe and meet me for coffee, so he picked it up and brought it along. I wiped it down with one of those pre-wetted bathroom sanitizing towels as it was filthy, put in a fresh battery, and fitted a roll of ancient Kodak Royal Gold 200 II that had been sitting in a drawer since 2000. The original intent was to see if the camera's film transport worked, but it seemed to be working so well I just carried it to a party and shot off the whole roll of film. I set the ASA to 100. Moon Shots With UGLY Sigma 400/5.6 APO
KEH do sell bargains most of the time like my Sigma 70-300 billed as BARGAIN for $ 45. I got Free shipping as I added another lens for $ 60. What a SURPRISE! The lens came: a) very well packed in a huge 5-ply carton with air pillows inside, b) It was in LN (Like New) Condition, except perhaps for some mark on the zoom rubber (which went away with lens cleaner), c) It had the original Sigma HOOD, Front and Rear Caps, d) at 70 mm the lens was brutally sharp, 200 mm very sharp, at 300 mm sharp, e) no dust or dirt inside or out - not even a small speck inside the glass. But hey, some has to suffer no? You or me as the STUPID SELLER. Ha ha!?? I can employ the KEH Buyer for my Materials Dept. - very productive employee. lunchtime comparisons
I'll put up results when I have time to edit the images for something practical. The lenses compared were (1) FA28-105 (pz) (2) 18-55WF (3) K50/1.4 (4) 70/2.4LTD (5) A50/1.7. First off, at 50mm, I was surprised how well the 28-105 compared to 2,3, 5. The full frame was well-rendered. The A50/1.7's cool cast coatings made for a bit more contrast. Sharpness was not a lot different across the range. But that's at the center of the range of the 28-105 -- which ought to be expected. At 70mm it is clearly inferior to the 70. But it was still quite good. At 35mm the image rendering was good but there was a lot of color fringing. Though the FA35/2 also showed some (this was from white flowers in bright sunshine), it we a fraction of what the 28-105 produced. While the 18-55 is very good it isn't quite long enough for my work. 28-105 will allow me to shoot in the lens' strong area of 40mm-80mm for best results. Recommendation: The FA28-105 (pz) is a very good lens. At the selling price of around $80 on eBay I can highly recommend it in terms bang-for-buck. And if/when FF comes you'll be happy you've got it. ;-) Would I use it on a pro shoot? Yes. And at the price having a backup copy is not out of the question. Also, for the dancers I've been shooting the 105mm reach works well. I need to go out to about 70mm or there about and this will make the shoots go better. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

[PlainText] OT- Olympus E-M1 user impressions.txt
(Note: Posting this to the PDML because we've had a bit of a discussion about alternatives to Pentax cameras there recently. The E-M1 is higher end than what we were discussing, but I felt others might like to know about it. Pardon the digression from our usual deep conversation... ;-) The Olympus rep was at the local camera shop today, so I took an hour to go up and fondle the new E-M1. Note that I've already placed an order for one, and I've already read the instruction manual cover to cover a couple of times, so I didn't need to ask what button did what or whether this widget or that widget did this and that—I know all that stuff already. My primary interest to see one in person was to see for myself how well it focuses with the FourThirds SLR lenses I own, and also to evaluate using it with and without the battery grip. There were six other people there when I was, all vying for the chance to play with the one pre-production sample unit the rep had to show. The rep was very gracious in allowing me to test it with my own lenses and fit my own storage card so I could do a little snapping and take the results home to look at. I made 16 exposures, both JPEG and RAW, and allowed a couple of the other folks to try it with my lenses too. My impressions after six or seven minutes handling at the counter: - Nice, tight, solid feel. Quite compact, not too small. Light. All the controls have a solid and reassuring solidity to them: positive and sure. Fit and finish of every little bit was excellent, even on this pre-production unit. - Without the HLD7 battery grip fitted, it's a little small in my hands (I take an L-XL glove size) for medium to larger lenses. With the HLD7 fitted, it feels very nice indeed even with smaller, lighter lenses. The control and button spacings are nicely placed and big enough to work easily. (Pentax relevant: it feels a lot like the MZ-S model with the grip fitted: thin and trim, solid, but with a bit more of a grip.) - I tested my FourThirds Olympus ZD 35 Macro and ZD 11-22 zoom lenses on it. If there's a difference in focusing speed between the E-M1 and the E-5, I'm not sensitive to it; it's certainly faster than the E-1 or E-PL1—neither of these are the fastest focusing lenses in anyone's bag anyway. Focusing accuracy seems very good: for the 16 quick point-and-snap photos I made, they are all but one right on the money, and that one was with the Macro which always takes its sweet time to go from far to near. - ISO 800 produces very good results, and the stabilization worked a treat at 1/10-1/20 second. I didn't explore stressing other ISO settings or the stabilization as there wasn't time. Suffice it to say that I feel completely comfortable with the quality of the sensor. - It's hard to tell you're looking at an EVF: the viewfinder is very clean, very transparent. I can manually focus either of the above lenses easily without bothering with either magnification or peaking assist in most cases. The viewfinder quality is easily better than my Nikon F plain prism with A screen and a comparable lens. It would take a bit more time to assess it against the Leicaflex SL viewfinder ... that one is truly remarkable, but so is the E-M1 EVF. The E-M1 EVF is a substantial notch better than Olympus' own VF-2 EVF that I use with the Leica X2 and Olympus E-PL1. - Lightroom 5.2 (the official release version) imported the E-M1 .ORF files without a hiccup, and for Lr's support being preliminary on this model, the colors look very accurate and well-balanced. I'm glad I ordered one of these bodies. After handling it with and without, I ordered the HLD7 battery grip on the spot too as I know I'll want it. It is, once again, a true Olympus pro-grade camera, the successor to their excellent E-1, E-3 and E-5. I still have and love the E-1... ;-) Nice camera. I'm going to enjoy it. Re: Which second party camera system do you like? Mini-survey
Ooops, haven't looked in for a week and didn't realize this thread went on longer. Very tempted by the GX7, but it is pricey. My preference is not to be an early adopter, but buy a camera after it's been out for a while. And gone down in price. Or you can get it used. Whatever. I certainly don't think it'll play a significant role in her decision given her telephoto preference (or if it does, it'll have a reverse significance). Side note: most of my shooting is also telephoto (except for macro), so I'm definitely not grinding any axe favoring wide-angle and I consider the m4/3 crop factor a plus myself because it makes for lighter and smaller telephoto lenses. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Pentax Q thoughts
Now that I have a nice sharp F* 300mm (thanks again Chris!), I was wondering if anyone has thoughts or experience in extending its reach by attaching a Q series body to a similar length lens, bringing the lens up to an equivalent of a 1300-1600mm lens on a 35mm body - photo examples would be great! Anyone have a spare Q they are willing to part with? [I live in the UK] While I realize the Q system's IQ doesn't match something like the K5, from reviews I've seen online the Q sensors are pretty good. Re: Moon shots with Ugly Sigma 400/5.6 APO
Thanks Paul, Dan and others who commented. This weekend is a biggie for us - a 50-year high school reunion that Meg has been helping to organize. Somewhere along the way she had a great (?) idea: I'll host a coffee/tea for the ladies Saturday morning! About 60 signed up; who knows how many drop-ins there will be. And we have house guests coming in for the weekend events. Next week the level of chaos should diminish and high on my list is to print this image. The moon shot is ok, more interesting than a brick wall as a test target IMHO, but I too like the reflection shot. stan On Sep 18, 2013, at 12:56 PM, Paul Sorenson wrote: The moon shot is nice, but the reflection is big print/wall-worthy. -p On 9/17/2013 9:12 PM, Stan Halpin wrote: This lens was pointed out as available at KEH, I figured I would give it a try. Re: Moon shots with Ugly Sigma 400/5.6 APO
So the lens marked ugly only had a scuff on the barrel? Really?! Nothing wrong with the glass? Ugh. I almost considered going for it considering Keh's generous return policy but then I had to go and break my A35-105/3.5. I did get a very nice replacement a few days later from a kind member of pentax forums that focuses properly and had very pristine looking glass. You should test it some more and tell us how it holds up. I've been eyeing up the sigma 400mm lenses because I think it would be a good FL for a lot of things and PF seems to give them good reviews for the most part. Very informative. Thanks for the write up and impressions. -- Bruce Sent from my iPad On Sep 18, 2013, at 2:00 PM, Godfrey DiGiorgi godd...@me.com wrote: (Note: Posting this to the PDML because we've had a bit of a discussion about alternatives to Pentax cameras there recently. Mini-survey
What you need to know about the metric system isn't all that hard to learn. Five miles = eight kilometers, so 25mph is 40kmph. A quart of milk is .946 liters (or so it says on the label). All the other nutrition information on the label has been listed in grams since some time back in the 70s (or surely at least since the 80s). Everything metric is either divisible by 10 or it can be multiplied by 10. Usually both, so that quart of milk is really 946 mL (milliliters). There are no fat grams in a bottle of vodka whether it's a fifth or 750 mL. Photographers, of course, have been dealing with lenses in millimeters for years years now; 35mm film was already 35mm film before I was born. It costs more to buy petrol by the liter in Canada, England or Europe than it does to buy gasoline by the gallon here in the U.S. You have to ask for paraffin if you want kerosene, but diesel is still diesel. And that pretty much sums up everything you really need to know to get along in the metric system. On 9/18/2013 5:32 PM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote: Yup. Some tweeking of the exposure, very minimal sharpening and noise reduction. http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/h7bb2025f#h7bb2025f The next one in the gallery (direct link here: http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/h7bb2025f#h74fea36f) is the reflection of the moon through some floating weeds along the riverbank. My initial impression is that this is not bad for a $100 lens. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Documenting Life in Rural Ontario. www.caughtinmotion.com http://brooksinthecountry.blogspot.com/ York Region, Ontario, Canada -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

My 18-55 used to be the WR version. Now today I notice that the WR designation has disappeared. Don't know if one of my sons borrowed it or if it got swapped elsewhere. Must ... find ... lens ...
