Thanks, everyone, for the kind remarks!

Maybe I will get my act together this year for the book, after all ... :)

This is what I found myself doing while I should have been taking care
of real work ... It's been a while since I was just able to play
with the camera. Y'know, I find I really like photography, I should
do it more often! lol.

I will say, I enjoy using the focus peaking on the K-01 and zooming in
live view, makes it much easier to really nail focus. Now I kinda
wish I had one of those 200mm macros to get in closer.

Hmm ...

But I'm uncertain of my choices and I would love some feedback:

* Does the large tree trunk on the left work as a foreground?
I've tried to use it both to show how the visibility degrades as you
go deeper into the scene; plus together with the next tree on the
right, to frame the narrow path.

* Then I've chosen to reduce the saturation, so that only hints of
green and brown (from the leaves) remain visible.

Re: PESO - Southerlies

2014-01-10 Thread knarf
I don't know how far mallards normally migrate. All I know is these guys
decided to winter here, which may not have been a wise choice.

I know there are ducks such a buffleheads and wigeons that do winter here and
fly north for the summer. Can't get good pix of them because they don't seem to
come close to shore but they thrive in cold water.

Thanks for the comment, and to Dan and Bruce too!

Re: OT: snowblower

Over the years, we have been most grateful for neighbors who share our
philosophy that more than a few snowblowers per block is excessive.
We have an arrangement with the family next door, in which we keep the
gas tanks filled, and do the simple repairs to keep it running... and
we help ourselves to the machine in their garage when the snow gets
too deep heavy to sweep away. Since it's usually up to my teenage
son to do the job, there's no danger of it happening before 10am...

Excellent!  Besides the atmosphere and nice rendering, I love the layers in
this pic: the car, the man and facade, and the woman behind the window on the
right.

 http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2014/01/watch-tracks.html?m=1

Love it, especially the Rolls :) And the mist in the distance. I'd actually
be tempted to try a fairly severe crop to get rid of the two leftmost cars.

If our cyclist Chris has to swerve around an illegally parked car those
tracks will have him down in an instant.

I'm getting sick of illegally parked vehicles... A few years ago they wrote a
law to ban the use of cellphones while driving unless they're handsfree. So
now when someones phone asks for attention they pull over immediately
regardless of driveways, cycleways or yellow lines. Yeah I know it's better
than texting while driving but you'd think we could learn to ignore a phone for
a couple of minutes.

Rant over :)

Well, coming from a K20D to the K3, I'm certainly seeing better photos with

Both in image quality and the ability to capture better images in low light.

You have to understand the difference between want and need.

That said, good equipment benefits a good photographer more than it will a
poor photographer.

I cannot disagree with Bruce, but I do do think you could start with a
crop. Eliminate the bird feeder on the right, go to portrait mode and post
enhance the fog a little. A person animal object at the end of the road
would have added something to look for. But I have taken a lot of worse
photos.

is just not quite enough...there needs to be something more to push it
beyond ordinary. Either more mist or some interesting filtered light or
a change in perspective to really draw me in. Lots of potential but not
quite there. I can't begin to tell you how many 'not quite there' shots
that I have taken. But it is the shooting and learning that we do that
helps us to improve. -- Bruce Sent from my iPad

It seems that for the last few days my town was shrouded in a

However, because I kind of like the overall atmosphere, I've tried
to catch it with my camera (a larger variant is available in the same
folder):

 http://data.volution.ro/ciprian/bdf753de58c560bc/0cb3ba63549b8029/variant-a--x800.jpg

Thanks for the comments,
Ciprian.

P.S.: The picture was taken with my old Fuji S5200 at ISO 100,
thus please ignore the noise and lack of sharpness.

PESO: Calorifier Room

2014-01-10 Thread David Mann
A few weeks ago they held an open day at Hillmorton Hospital which occupies
part of the site formerly known as Sunnyside Hospital. Sunnyside was opened as
a mental asylum in 1863 and closed in 1999. The main building was demolished
but many of the more modern outbuildings remain and are still in use today.

One of my wife's ancestors spent a little time in the asylum so we went to take
a look at the historical display. On the way back to our car I noticed this
sign.

I took the photo using my cellphone and the colours were a bit wonky so I
converted to BW.
