PESO: Paddle Boarders

2014-02-07 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Here in Maui, all the attention is on the professional surfers riding
the huge waves on the North Shore of Oahu and Jaws here on Maui. The
most popular form of surfing amongst the common folk, however, seems
to be Paddle Board Surfing, also called Stand-Up Surfing. Here is a
sample from our local beach:

Ricoh taking aim at GoPro with WG-4 accessories, and I think that's good for us, too.

2014-02-07 Thread John Celio
With all the talk about the WG line switching from Pentax to Ricoh
branding, you may have missed their announcement of four mounting
options for the WG-4 and older WG models:

Mounts:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/accessoryreviews/ricoh-pentax-wg-camera-mounting-accessories.html
Chest Strap:
http://www.us.ricoh-imaging.com/accessories/Sport_Mount_Chest_Harness

Although I'm not really the type who'd use a GoPro, I'm glad to see
Ricoh taking a step towards marketing to those kinds of people, and I
think it's another indication that Pentax is in pretty good hands.
Ricoh's taking this stuff seriously, and that seems to be translating
across all of the products they acquired from Hoya. I'm beginning to
think that, even if they someday rebrand their SLRs as Ricoh cameras,
I wouldn't mind too much.

That said, I've got a WG-3 but I don't think I do anything interesting
enough to buy one of these mounts myself. It's cool that they're out
there, though.

Subject: A couple of weeks with the K3

Several weeks ago I asked here about whether I should get a K3 or move to
full frame with a Canon.

I stayed with Pentax, and got the K3. I installed a KatzEye screen in mine,
because I wanted to use some manual lenses, like the K25/3.5 and
K30/2.8

I love this camera! I am amazed at the quality of these files. The autofocus
is finally fast enough for me--I didn't think the old screw AF technology
would ever be any good, but this actually works well.
The whole camera seems quite a bit faster than the K5. And frankly, after
seeing the quality I'm getting, I don't think I'll be using the
K5 or the K-01 much anymore.

It isn't many yet, and you can't really see the sharpness on a web image,
but here are the K3 photos I have posted to my blog so far:

http://www.jbuhler.com/?s=k3

Can't wait to see where Ricoh takes Pentax DSLRs in the future. This first
effort is brilliant.

Dan,
It reminded me of the series of the soviet-era sculptures in the former
Soviet Union, that were collectively called: Girl with a paddle or
Oar Girl.
WSJ even wrote an article about one of those some 2.5 years ago:
http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424053111904583204576542502256100040?mod=googlenews_wsjmg=reno64-wsjurl=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB10001424053111904583204576542502256100040.html%3Fmod%3Dgooglenews_wsj
Short link:
http://goo.gl/WeneNe

Take a look e.g. at this [translated] Wikipedia page, especially the
first photo there and you will understand why thought of those when
looking at your photo:
http://goo.gl/EyOEeV
(Original here: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/äÅ×ÕÛËÁ_Ó_×ÅÓÌÏÍ or
http://goo.gl/9n2v8A if the link gets corrupted due to encoding )

And if you look at what images Google search shows for that Russian
expression (girl with a paddle), you'll notice some photos similar to
yours. Some derivative work is also very interesting:

VESO [musical GESO] - Magic Buble Show

2014-02-07 Thread Igor Roshchin

Last year, at our physics festival, we had bubble show, done by Tom
Noddy.
Tom Noddy is one of the first performers who started doing bubble shows.
He appeared Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, and if I remember correctly,
on Jay Leno's show as well.
http://www.tomnoddy.com/

I shot many photographs from the shows we had here.

Since those galleries are huge. I put them together as a quick video clip:
http://www.youtube.com/embed/6_Q4URmK9p0?rel=0
I hope you enjoy.

(If anybody is interested in the static photos, they are in the last
two sets: http://42graphy.org/science/2013-04-physfest/ )

Several weeks ago I asked here about whether I should get a K3 or move
to
full frame with a Canon.

I stayed with Pentax, and got the K3. I installed a KatzEye screen in
mine,
because I wanted to use some manual lenses, like the K25/3.5 and
K30/2.8

I love this camera! I am amazed at the quality of these files. The
autofocus
is finally fast enough for me--I didn't think the old screw AF
technology
would ever be any good, but this actually works well.
The whole camera seems quite a bit faster than the K5. And frankly,
after
seeing the quality I'm getting, I don't think I'll be using the
K5 or the K-01 much anymore.

It isn't many yet, and you can't really see the sharpness on a web
image,
but here are the K3 photos I have posted to my blog so far:

http://www.jbuhler.com/?s=k3

Can't wait to see where Ricoh takes Pentax DSLRs in the future. This
first
effort is brilliant.

Ricoh's taking this stuff seriously, and that seems to be translating

 That said, I've got a WG-3 but I don't think I do anything interesting

FS Friday, 24 iMac

2014-02-07 Thread Larry Colen
I had planned to keep it for displaying photos at parties, using as an
iTunes server etc. but since I'm unemployed, there are other things that
I need more than it (such as a laptop with USB3 that I can run LR on).

It is an iMac 7.1 2.4 GHz core 2 duo, 6 GB ram, 320 GB hard drive.
The superdrive has gone a bit flaky. I was hoping it would be
worth more, but looking on craigslist, they seem to be going for
about $450.

It has a great display, and if you don't process as many photos at a time
as I do (or you put an SSD in it), it'd be great for processing photos.

I thought it would be a DA* lens, but you might be right, and it would

A small epiphany...

2014-02-07 Thread Darren Addy
Straightening up my workshop this weekend I saw these three boxes
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/12376451995/
and was struck by the sudden epiphany that virtually ALL of my
favorite images were produced with one of these three lenses. As a
Pentax DSLR owner I have, admittedly, not owned any of the proverbial
really good Pentax AF glass but I am more than pleased with these
three lenses. Only the 28mm f1.8 was purchased new (for $399 from a
retailer selling on eBay). The 10-20mm was found on Craigslist for
$350 and the Bigma was purchased from a PDML-er who was switching to
Nikon NEX. All 3 are superb performers, IMHO.

With the proviso that owner satisfaction is better with the 28mm f1.8
than its wider focal length siblings, I can heartily recommend the
Sigma EX series to my Pentax-shooting brethren.

Sorry for the delay, had to dig out the relevant slides and find a film scanner
to scan slides!
A shot taken at Biggin Hill or Farnborough in probably the early sixties, when
the Canadian Air
Force display team was showing off during the annual air show.

We call it stand-up paddling. It's fairly new here but is slowly increasing in
popularity.

I do like the look of that sunny weather and calm water!

Nice, that looks very close to shore. The water must get very deep very
quickly.

Re: zx/mz question

2014-02-07 Thread John Francis

I've still got an MZ-S, a PZ-1p, and two MXes (one that I bought
in 1976, and a black one I picked up ten years or so ago just in
case, as it was getting hard to find places that worked on a MX).

Those are the bodies that I believe to be in working condition.
I've also got an ME, ME Super, and Super Program which will never
get used; they're just to remind me of the K-mount Pentaxes I had.

I suspect that if I do ever shoot film again (and I do have some
Royal Gold 25 lurking in the freezer ...) it will be in a MX.

I understood what you meant, Jack. I am sure however that she thinks
she looks absolutely stunning.

To be fair, she was reaching and straining at the time I depressed the
shutter, which is never flattering.

 Thanks, Jack.

She certainly intended to be seen, that's for sure!

Actually bikinis of that brevity are quite rare in Maui. Most younger
women favor more conservative bikinis or, quite often, bikini tops and
bottoms resembling men's boxers or even board shorts.

Thanks for commenting, David.

I understand that the sport is a growing one over much of the world,
but it is a lot easier to learn here where the ocean temperature is
between 76 and 79 all year round.
