We had an excellent 9 days in the UK (8 days out of 9 being comfortable and sunny is routine, right?). A highlight of the trip was the gathering in Oxfordshire, pub lunch, and walk up to the White Horse and along the Ridgeway with Bob, Chris and Karin, and Cotty and Alma. It was great to see you and Joy - apologies for not spending more time with you all. I had very little time to get familiar with the video camera before I was off! All went well and I'm back on dry land (albeit with 'shore-sickness' !) now and organising and ingesting the video. And a phone call from a major client this morning to do an instructional DVD on plastics welding. It never stops! Thanks, Jack Mark. They grow prolifically here - the double varieties too. The yellow ones attract butterflies but not the red. I've used the skip observation before (or whatever builders call the large metal container to remove waste from projects where you are), but in 'good times', they are replaced regularly, filled with all sorts of things that look hardly used. I can remember at one point in 1974 it was rare to see one on the streets with money for work tight, and those skips were almost impossible to fill, as others found use for what was put in it, almost as soon as it went in! Getting back to the picture, it's that curiosity of how this will be looked at in say, 2035? Will people be able to date it roughly - 'Ah yes, that sort of body art was popular up until the early 2020s?'. Giulia, my muse, in 'Dreams' photo-performing project
Hi all, Encouraged by Bruce, here I'm going to explain my ongoing photo project with Giulia. First, she's not a model. She's a dancer choreographer, and that's essential to understand the concept of the project. It is called 'Lost Dreams, Found Dreams'. What we are doing here is more or less the following: We do several shooting sessions in very different environments (wheat field, clay lake, clothing store, studio, etc.) and each of them is seen as a different dream of mine. As you know, dreams depend on you but you cannot take true control of them... that's the same with Giulia. I arrange the shooting, but then she takes her freedom to move change the way she behaves there. She never stays still... moments and situations come and go and vanish, just like dreams. And I try shoot them like fixing a dream when you awake before it's gone forever. At the end, we will get a photo exhibition, and much more. In fact, Giulia will also create a solo choreography inspired by the feelings, the movements and the situations she experienced in the different photo shootings. Then she will perform that solo in a dance festival here in Italy on September 12, dancing through the printed pictures on show and then also behind and in front of a screen where other pics will be projected onto. That show will be the opening event of the festival, with me on stage shooting her performence. So photo dance will merge once again, in an endless loop. Exciting, isn't it? We had a great marching band, majorettes and cheerleaders. All in the mid 70s when the white kids in the suburban schools were thumbing their noses at those kind of things. We also had a fabulous football team, and in 1979 we became the first public school in almost 20 years to win a city championship over the predominantly white catholic league schools. I documented much of my time at Julian on film. I have several thousand transparencies and BW negs that I shot during those five happy years. I’ve just begun scanning some of them. I started with that 1979 football championship, but I have many more that I will eventually scan. In March of 1980 I was offered a job in New York at Hearst Magazine Division. The Chicago Board of Education had run out of money and had stopped paying the teachers. We were on the picket line when I got the call. I crossed the line, walked into the office to turn in my resignation on Thursday afternoon, March 7, 1980 and flew to New York the next morning. I still feel guilty. Today, Julian is still somewhat better than the other Southside Chicago High Schools, but the magic is largely gone. The entire south side of Chicago is a mess. The gangs are in control, and kids are shot on the street every day. A number of Julian kids have been killed on their way home from school. It’s had for me to imagine. It’s heartbreaking. I passed over it in Lightroom and almost marked it for deletion as it was just a black frame. But I looked more closely and saw some faint detail. A summer drive is, no matter which direction we're going, one in which the sun is always on her side of the car. Sleeves. as I've heard those types of tattoos called have been around for a long time, I became aware of them about ten maybe fifteen years ago, but I'm sure they existed before that. Women didn't seem to be getting them until more recently. One of the explanations was bandied about, for the rise in tattoos, in Western cultures, had to do with the turn of the century. It seems that there have been more tattoos at the turn of the 20th century, and the 19th, (as far as can be determined and if I remember the articles I read correctly). Some theory about the century changing that made people want to have more control over something, and tattoos were taking control of your own body. It seemed pretty silly, as a theory. I've used the skip observation before (or whatever builders call the large metal container to remove waste from projects where you are), but in 'good times', they are replaced regularly, filled with all sorts of things that look hardly used. I can remember at one point in 1974 it was rare to see one on the streets with money for work tight, and those skips were almost impossible to fill, as others found use for what was put in it, almost as soon as it went in! Getting back to the picture, it's that curiosity of how this will be looked at in say, 2035? Will people be able to date it roughly - 'Ah yes, that sort of body art was popular up until the early 2020s?'. Its not a castle - why couldn't it just be built in a quite, classic style like other bldgs in D.C.
