Re: Which is the perfect camera bag

2015-09-28 Thread Ken Waller
The only camera bags I've bought are by Tamrac and their products have been
great for what I wanted. A while back I damaged one of their products that
I've owned for several years - I sent it to them and not only did they
repair that damage, but they also upgraded some of the features and nevewr
charged me for it. Hard to beat that kind of service !

I hope you'd be able to take a look at some of those models in one of
the still remaining stores in the Bay Area.
(Houston stores, err. actually more like the only remaining Houston
photo stor doesn't carry these bags at this time.)

I have Up-rise 33 (messenger style), and it travelled around the world

Here is what I wrote about this line earlier here:

B, Amazon, and Adorama carry Vanguard bags.

Cool! Thanks for the recommendation. It turns out that Lowepro is
sending me a new replacement. Excellent service, they could have made a
good argument that it was simply wear and tear on the bag and not covered.

They are sending me a slightly different model, we'll see how that works.
I may need to eventually upsize anyways.

Or , as a line to start that game I played long ago with literary types
writing a line or two, folding over the paper so only part of
what you wrote showed, passing it to the next person to write a couplet,
repeat folding paper... around the room and then the

So, anyway, I did see some of the super-moon & eclipse, but never enough

Re: Total Lunar Eclipse

Found two sites with collected photos from the Super-Moon Eclipse:

http://petapixel.com/2015/09/28/the-best-photos-and-videos-from-supermoon-lunar-eclipse-2015/

http://twistedsifter.com/2015/09/photos-of-the-super-mega-ultra-blood-moon-eclipse-that-you-probably-didnt-see/

Don't know how many fakes there are among them.

The next Super-Moon eclipse is supposed to be in 2033. The way my life
goes, even if I live long enough to see it, it's bound to be cloudy.

Re: Where should I send my DA* 16-50 for repair

2015-09-28 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Larry,

Bipin gave an interesting idea.

I had one experience with KEH repairing SDM.

I had one used SDM lens purchased in early 2014 from KEH, and the SDM AF
failed right away. I sent the lens back to KEH and they repaired it within
a week or two. I don't know what they actually did with it. (Did they
replace the motor, the chip?)

In the past month, I have had 2-3 occasions when the lens wouldn't start
focusing when I mount it on the camera, but then, after I turn the ring
manually (no obstruction, even slightest is felt), - it starts working.

I suspect it's at the verge of failing again.

I have only one other data point for comparison:
The lens where the SDM chip was replaced by CRIS under warranty, hasn't
shown any problem over 3 years since the repair.

In any case, I have too few data points to make any conclusions.
But maybe those are helpful for you.

Re: Total Lunar Eclipse

2015-09-28 Thread John

Despite the local weather forecast, I went outside a few times to check
if it was visible.

Got one fairly good glimpse at the moon through the clouds before it
started. Not enough to see any details; just barely enough to see there
is texture to the moon's surface. Later there was another glimpse
through thinner clouds when the moon was half covered by the earth's
shadow.

When I checked at the time it was supposed to peak, I saw a dark grey
spot in the clouds where the moon should have been. It lasted for an
instant or so before more clouds rolled in.

I thought about setting my camera up anyway, maybe try to get something
to use for the "Wind" PUG, but I couldn't really figure out how to get

Re: The Moon

I did get a few shots of the moon last night. Haven't had a look at
them yet.

But I have noticed Photoshop fakes starting to appear on Fecebook. The
first to get my attention was allegedly of an antler arch in Jackson
Hole, Wyoming with the moon in the background. At first I wondered how
they could get the necessary DOF with an obviously long super
telephoto. Then I realized you couldn't. Then I saw the incredibly bad
cut-and-paste artifacts in the image...

Note: There was so little light the K-5II just simply refused to try to
focus with the AF adapter and the Solid Cat lens mounted, I had to force
it to focus to infinity with a different lens then mount the camera onto
the Solid cat which was mounted on the tripod. Lest anyone thing this
might be the reason for the bad focus, every shot with every lens
combination whether manual or auto focused looked pretty much like the
one posted, just smaller on the frame. I do kind of like it as an
abstract, but I really wish that I had captured more detail.

will be treated to one of nature’s grandest celestial sky shows – a
total eclipse of the Moon. And unlike the one in April which occurred
in the early predawn hours, this one will happen during convenient
evening ones.

This cosmic spectacular begins with the full Moon entering the Earth’s
dark inner shadow (the “umbra”) at 9:06 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time and
continuing to become ever-more fully immersed in it for the next hour.
Totality itself will start at 10:11 p.m. EDT and last more than an
hour until 11:23 EDT, after which the Moon begins to slowly emerge
from the cone of darkness in reverse order. Adding to the beauty of
the overall scene at this eclipse (especially during totality itself,
while the sky is dark), the Moon will be accompanied by some of the
early rising bright winter stars. (Use your Scientifics’ Star and
Planet Locator to identify them)

There are several interesting things to notice as you watch this event
unfold. Most obvious are the darkness of the eclipsed Moon and the
range of colors displayed, both of which vary from one eclipse to
another. These depend on the clarity of the Earth’s atmosphere at the
time, which refracts or bends sunlight around into the umbral shadow.
There have actually been eclipses so dark that the Moon remained
all-but invisible during totality — and ones so pale that you had to
look carefully to see that there was even an eclipse in progress!
Among the colors that have been seen are shades of reddish-orange,
brown, copper, rose, and even blood-red. Notice, too, that the Earth’s
shadow is curved at all phases of the eclipse, as the Moon passes
through it. This is direct proof that the Earth itself is round —
something recognized by many early skywatchers. And finally, realize
that you’re actually seeing our lovely satellite move eastward in its
orbit — as it first passes into, through, and then out of the shadow
at roughly its own diameter each hour.

While lunar eclipses can certainly be enjoyed with the unaided eye
alone (as they have been throughout most of history!), they are
best-seen in binoculars. An ideal pair for this would be a 7×50 or
10×50 glass, the first number indicating its magnification and the
second the aperture in millimeters. Telescopes themselves, with their
relatively narrow fields of view, typically don’t provide enough sky
coverage around the Moon to get the full effect of its globe being
suspended in space. An exception here, however, is Scientifics’
amazing Astroscan wide-field reflecting telescope. Providing a
3-degree actual field of view at it low magnification of 16x, it takes
in an astounding six full-Moon-diameters of sky — something many have
described as looking through the porthole of a spaceship!

Re: Where should I send my DA* 16-50 for repair

If you can't figure out where Pentax's warranty repair center is, I'd
also recommend Peachtree Camera Repair in Marietta, GA.

http://www.peachtreecamerarepair.com/

He was the second guy who tried to fix my Tokina 28-70 f/2.8 ATX Pro, and
although he was ultimately unable to do so, he did show me exactly what
was wrong with it & what (unavailable) part would be needed for the repair.

There's also a guy in Knoxville who does Pentax stuff:

http://www.pentaxs.com/

He was the first guy who tried to repair my Tokina 28-70.

Nothing wrong with either of their work, the Tokina is just so old you
can't get the part that needs to be replaced.

That's a nice catch, Paul!

I envy your opportunity to observe it.
It was cloudy and drizzling all day and throughout the night.

But my biggest disappointment was that I was unable to show the eclipse
to my daughter. The timing would've been perfect: the totality
was starting just before the bed time for her.
Earlier last week, I had explained to her how eclipse happens, showing
that with a lamp, inflatable globe and a yellow ball (as the moon).

At about 8:20pm (CDT), it started clearing up right above us, and the
clouds thinned slightly around the moon, to give a hope, but only for less
than a minute, and it didn't reveal the moon. I kept stepping outside of
the house to check, but to no avail.

Bummer!

Which is the perfect camera bag

2015-09-28 Thread Larry Colen
If I cannot get my fastpack 350 replaced under warranty, I'll be needing

wallet, keys and other little bits in it as well.

My requirements are:

Outside pockets that work for carrying my wallet, keys and other things
I might need for using it as a daily use backpack.

A fairly large computer pocket. Even if I don't carry a computer I like
to carry a softbox for my speedlight, monopod and other fairly large

Things that I like:
An easy to get to pocket for the camera, without having to open the

take off both shoulder straps.

GESO - Distortions, published

2015-09-28 Thread Bruce Walker
When I first went into the studio with art model Dorrie Mack it was to
shoot an idea of mine: exploring multi-exposures and nudes. I shot up
to 24 exposures per pose with various different techniques to make
them interesting. In some the model stayed still while I moved the
camera from side-to-side and up-and-down. In others I shot from the
floor and shifted myself in an arc around the model incrementally for
each frame. In some cases I had the model turn slightly to face me for
each frame I took. In a few I had the model alter her pose slightly
between each frame.

I composited these multiple exposures in post using pixel averaging
similar to multi-exposure in camera. In some cases I added coloured
filters to the exposures in the stack.

I submitted this project to a new Canadian art and fashion magazine
called Emboss and it was accepted and
printed in the September 2015 issue released last week. They printed
five of the images. I put those five plus four more outtakes into
this gallery on Tumblr ...

http://off-axis.brucemwalker.com/post/129936161782/distortions-this-is-the-complete-set-of

All take with a K-3 and DA* 16-50/2.8 in studio. Lighting varies but
is mostly a 7 foot parabolic silver umbrella.

Comments welcome.

Totality itself will start at 10:11 p.m. EDT and last more than an

There have actually been eclipses so dark that the Moon remained

I hope you'd be able to take a look at some of those models in one of
the still remaining stores in the Bay Area.
(Houston stores, err. actually more like the only remaining Houston
photo stor doesn't carry these bags at this time.)

I have Up-rise 33 (messenger style), and it travelled around the world
with me, carrying my camera, lenses and laptop.

Here is what I wrote about this line earlier here:
http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2014-July/381524.html

B, Amazon, and Adorama carry Vanguard bags.

Cool! Thanks for the recommendation. It turns out that Lowepro is
sending me a new replacement. Excellent service, they could have made a
good argument that it was simply wear and tear on the bag and not covered.

They are sending me a slightly different model, we'll see how that
works. I may need to eventually upsize anyways.

My requirements are:

Outside pockets that work for carrying my wallet, keys and other things I

A fairly large computer pocket. Even if I don't carry a computer I
like to
carry a softbox for my speedlight, monopod and other fairly large flat

Things that I like:
An easy to get to pocket for the camera, without having to open the whole
pack. I like the way the fastpack does this without needing to take
off both
shoulder straps.

A good way to strap a tripod to the backpack. (the fastpack lacks this)

Re: The Moon

Hi Jack,

I shot at ISO 12,800, f5.6, minus two stops exposure comp. I think I managed
about 1/125th shutter speed. The moon was quite dim. All on the K-3 with the
DA* 60-250 and DA 1.4 converter. The pic is cropped to about 1/3 of the frame.
It was a horizontal, so I took a vertical slice that included a couple of stars.

Re: Which is the perfect camera bag

2015-09-28 Thread Darren Addy
Glad to hear that Lowe is replacing your Fastback 350. I've got one
and I think it is a fantastic bag.

But you asked for "the perfect camera bag" and so I'm replying even
though your immediate problem is solved. I picked up a like new Urban
Disguise 60 v2 from an eBay seller and I am SO impressed with it. The
only bag that would be MORE perfect (and this is only if you have a
17" laptop) would be the Urban Disguise 70.

While these appear to be Shoulder Bags (as opposed to backpacks),
Urban Disguise sells shoulder straps for them so you can wear it like
a backpack, if you prefer. These bags are so well made with so many
nice options and so many pockets and slots that I can't describe them
all. Just search YouTube for video reviews by owners, or read the rave
reviews by owners on places like B Here are the reviews for my (now
discontinued) 60 v2.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist.jsp=details==847332=REG=y

B has a CRAZY sale on the 70 v2 right now... barely more than I paid
for my 60 v2 USED:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O==847333=CjwKEAjwyqOwBRDZuIO4p5SV8w0SJAAQoUSw4WMn7jmsL4H2OlaZ96-g0OCh_C4tp2Iud8UBmA_7CBoClnfw_wcB=REG=Y=details=

My 60 is big enough that in the middle compartment I can hold my Bigma
with the K-01 attached as a rear lens cap. My Dell Latitude E6430 fits
in another zippered compartment.

I'm now using my Fastback for my shorter lenses and using the Urban
Disguise for my long lenses, extra bodies, chargers, etc. I highly
recommend that you consider the Urban Disguise models and particulary
the big 60 and 70 if you are looking for something to hold a laptop in
addition to a lot of gear:

saw a faint glimmer of reddish color around 11 but no shape.. but on the
local news this morning I saw some neat shots locals got from
different vantage points than mine... although not far - I probably
should have stayed by the bedroomwindow - wasn't up to going to the roof
it gets a little difficult to navigate for me these days. Bummer... I

And earlier, after a significant dry spell, I got a few okay street shots
today. Can't wait to look at them on a big monitor and process a few...

Note: There was so little light the K-5II just simply refused to try

Total Lunar Eclipse!

On the evening of September 27th, skywatchers throughout North

America

will be treated to one of nature’s grandest celestial sky shows – a
total eclipse of the Moon. And unlike the one in April which

occurred

in the early predawn hours, this one will happen during convenient
evening ones.

This cosmic spectacular begins with the full Moon entering the

Earth’s

dark inner shadow (the “umbra”) at 9:06 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time

and

continuing to become ever-more fully immersed in it for the next

hour.

Totality itself will start at 10:11 p.m. EDT and last more than an
hour until 11:23 EDT, after which the Moon begins to slowly emerge
from the cone of darkness in reverse order. Adding to the beauty of
the overall scene at this eclipse (especially during totality

itself,

while the sky is dark), the Moon will be accompanied by some of the
early rising bright winter stars. (Use your Scientifics’ Star and
Planet Locator to identify them)

There are several interesting things to notice as you watch this

event

unfold. Most obvious are the darkness of the eclipsed Moon and the
range of colors displayed, both of which vary from one eclipse to
another. These depend on the clarity of the Earth’s atmosphere at

the

time, which refracts or bends sunlight around into the umbral

shadow.

Notice, too, that the

Earth’s

shadow is curved at all phases of the eclipse, as the Moon passes
through it. This is direct proof that the Earth itself is round —
something recognized by many early skywatchers. And finally, realize
that you’re actually seeing our lovely satellite move eastward in

its

orbit — as it first passes into, through, and then out of the shadow
at roughly its own diameter each hour.

While lunar eclipses can certainly be enjoyed with the unaided eye

Thanks for settings.
Fine hand held image, especially at the somewhat problematic 1/125 shutter.
High resolving lens combination deserving of some credit as well.

ActuallY I saw it for about 45 minutes ... but no colors.. up to where
it became a very thin ")" - I did make anattempt with the 55-300
but using my dressmaker dummy as a tripod and I'msure all I got ws a
fuzzy cresent .. then the clouds rolled in..

saw a faint glimmer of reddish color around 11 but no shape.. but on the
local news this morning I saw some neat shots locals got from
different vantage points than mine... although not far - I probably
should have stayed by the bedroomwindow - wasn't up to going to the roof
it gets a little difficult to navigate for me these days. Bummer... I
saw the last oneat least. 18 years... to the next one.. if I get to 96
I'll probably need someone to hold my head up

Most of what I did was under develop/basic, a little under develop/detail/noise
reduction. I haven’t ventured into the graduated filter yet. Still trying to
assimilate what I’m learning—I hope I’m learning--in the other areas.

I’m concerned that I may have gone overboard. I don’t like heavily saturated
photos, and some of these may venture on that.

Comments and suggestions more than welcome.
