There was an all time favourite back in July 2014.
And the 15th anniversary was also a sort of own favorite from previous
submissions.
Therefore I would like the idea of selecting a pic representing one's

OT - good deals for Portable USB-3.0 HDDs (2 and 3 GB)

2016-12-20 Thread Igor PDML-StR

A few people were asking about USB-3.0 HDDs recently.
So, - I see two fresh rather good deals for a 2GB and 3GB portable USB 3.0
HDDs.

I bought this type of 3GB portable WD HDD in Septemmber and I am very
happy with it.
(It appears considerably faster than my previous two Seagate portable
USB-3.0 drives)

3GB for $70:
http://dealnews.com/WD-2-TB-USB-3.0-External-HDD-w-Grip-Pack-for-70-free-shipping/1859117.html

2GB for $50:
http://dealnews.com/Western-Digital-2-TB-Portable-USB-3.0-HDD-for-49-pickup-at-Walmart/1871249.html

Just in case, "portable" means that it is small, and also it doesn't have
a separate power supply, but takes the power from the USB port.
(I've heard of some underpowered USB 3.0 on laptops that had problems
powering up external HDDs. I've been using 3 of them on various computers
without any problem.)

Other possibilities:
Honey Mushroom Armillaria solidipes

Location and habitat (what tree is that?) woud help narrow it down.

Picture Window Pro

2016-12-20 Thread Brian Walters
I tried this Photoshop alternative years ago but found the interface too
baffling. A lot of people love the program, though.

Anyway - the developer has decided to cease further development of the
program and has released the current version as freeware. Available in
64 & 32 bit versions, if anyone wants to try it...

I agree. Everyone should be encouraged to submit. Any of the suggestions
I made should be optional, not compulsory, but it might make a more
interesting PUG if we did something other than just an "open" gallery.

Re: PESO -- The girl in the IKEA coffee shop

2016-12-20 Thread P. J. Alling
The AF is only noisy to the operator. If you're 10 feet away, normal
noise in a public place usually drowns out the focusing sound.

It's interesting. I haven't bought one yet, but I've been looking at
the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. All the reviews, and I mean all of them,
complain about how loud the focusing motor built into the lens is.
Doesn't matter the mount, doesn't matter the camera. It's just
described as noisy.

I finally had a chance to try one out, not the Pentax mount, but the
Nikon on a 3400. It was surprisingly quite after all the noise hype
I've read about. I think perception is more important than anything
else when describing the focusing sound of a lens.

Re: 20th Anniversary PUG

Happy Anniversary to my fellow PUG'rs. I'm still here, just 6959
messages behind. Our move from Carencro, (named after a bird that eats
dead flesh) back to Lafayette (named after some Frenchman) has me
overwhelmed. From 4000 sq ft to 2000 sq ft I'm lucky I can find
anything. I do know where my cameras are but not sure I remember how to
use them. So far we have only lost one box but it is the one with all
the remotes in it. The New Year brings much hope.

Grateful for all the good things this year!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or whatever blows your skirt up.

I'm gonna read everyone.

20th Anniversary PUG

2016-12-20 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I know that in April 2017, we are having the 20th anniversary PUG. Has
there been any guidance on what we should submit?

Two possible ideas:

1. Perhaps it could be a mini gallery from each submiter, including a
certain small number (4? 6?) of images that each submitter considers to be
representative of the type of images he or she likes to make.

2. It could also be used to feature images from our first Pentadx camera.

3. Another possibility would be to have each chose his or her favorite
from prior PUG submissions.

Just a few random and uninvited thoughts from the foggy brain of an old
geezer.

Thanks,

That's a weird one. Looks like a cross between a Polypore, or bracket fungus
(which grows on trees) and a chantarelle, which doesn't. Maybe one of the
Pleurotus species, commonly known as Oyster mushrooms?

Other possibilities:
Honey Mushroom Armillaria solidipes
Sulfur Shelf Laetiporus sulphureus
Northern Tooth Climacodon septentrionalis

Location and habitat (what tree is that?) woud help narrow it down.

Re: OSX and externals

2016-12-20 Thread Bruce Walker
I always reformat new drives, Dave. Mainly to make sure they are
formatted properly for Mac OS X. I don't trust retail store drives to
be anything but Windows formatted.

And those special apps they would like you to install are usually
completely worthless. They _might_ enable some efficiency tweaks, but
you need to Google a bunch to find out if that's important or useful.
The drive should work fine without, after formatting.

Is it USB3? If not low data transfer performance will limit you quite a bit.

If you mean this:
http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/ntfs-driver-for-mac-os-master-dl/

then personally I would uninstall that and just re-format the drive.
It'll be more reliable and probably better performance I'd have
thought.
