Re: OT: Windoze

2017-01-30 Thread P. J. Alling
Well there's your problem, MS want's everyone to move "up" to Win10, I'm
trying to avoid that for as long as possible.

For the first time in a long time all my PCs are running the same OS,
which is Win7, well except for the two laptops I'm currently deciding if
I want to refurbish or not.

The Lenovo Thinkpad with all the stupid propitiatory hardware updates
just fine.

What about the desktop? You ask.

Starting last month the December security rollup failed to install. I
finally got it to work, I guess, but the update manager didn't believe
it, and kept offering to install it no matter what I did.

Now because the January security rollup is available it no longer offers
December, but, the January rollup fails with an unknown error code. I
seem to be the only one in the known universe having this problem
because searches on the error number or security update failures on this
update return no information.

I'd at least like some company in my misery.

Boris,

You can still buy LR6 perpetual license from the Adobe site. I haven't seen a
box copy of Lightroom in several years.

- Go to

https://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software_sl_mostpopular.html
- Click Buy next to Lightroom
- On the next page, set the option for an Upgrade and use your LR 5.7 key to
authorize the upgrade.
- Then download LR

If that's not available to you, send me your 5.7 key. I could then buy a copy,
download it, then send it to you via DropBox with the install code.

The upgrade is US$79. Full package price is $149.

We saw this guy on December 24th being a Santa in front of his front yard:

You can read the story about this guy in this online article (our local

There are 3 more photos of parts of his front yard in this gallery:

If someone is curious, I think his lot is less than 0.5 acre, probably

"Hidden Figures" is delightful. I have been to see it twice, brought several
other people to see it as well.

I've been on a NASA space program movie and documentary kick since John Glenn
passed away last month. Hidden Figures hit the theaters at just the right
moment for me and brought me back to my days at NASA/JPL. I met Mary Jackson—I
imagine just shortly before she retired—at a Mathematics symposium at JPL. One
of my friends at the Lab made of point of introducing me to her. I didn't know
her story during the time featured in the movie, but I knew she had had a long
career at NASA when I met her. The movie brought tears to my eyes, particularly
the moment when the judge gave her permission to attend the classes that
enabled her to become an engineer. My gosh, what a momentous thing!

Such sharp minds, and such tenacity and motivation to succeed despite the odds.
Just amazing people… The movie does justice to the story. It is almost shameful
that it has taken this long to have their story told to the world.

I loved the movie and the book even more. I read it three times.
On that point, I checked and John Glenn really did ask to have "the woman"
double check the work of the IBM computer, although not at the last moment,
as portrayed in the movie.

Agreed, it is a great story. I posted about it on facebook about a week

Agreed. We saw it over the weekend and felt the same way.

This is a story that should have been told decades ago. Besides being
historically important, it is emotionally very moving. When applause
breaks out in the auditorium at the close of the film you know it has
made an impact.

No, but it uses you.

Apparently the whole universe could be a giant hologram. If so it's probably
running on a Windows 8 box*, and needs to see what you look like in order to
maintain the illusion that you're real.

It's all just a butterfly dreaming.

OT: Hidden Figures (for my fellow Americans -- mostly)

2017-01-30 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
This has been a fairly good year for movies. LA LA Land is wonderful.
Manchester by the Sea is an emotional bombshell with great acting.
Patriot's day is exciting with interesting insights into terrorism and how
we react to it. All pale, however when compared to Hidden Figures.

This is an important movie. See it, on a big screen if possible. Make
your children see it. Make your grandchildren see it.

It is a scandal that this story has been overlooked for so long. It needs
to be told, and to be spread all around our country.

BTW, it is quite entertaining, and the acting is superb.

Ann and I and some others here will relate to the Sputnik scare, hiding
under our desks at school and the drama of the first 7 Astronauts. The
scenes of segregation and prejudice in the South of the early 1960 are
moving and disturbing, but true to what I saw. Most importantly, however,
is the story of the black women who did most of the math on which our early
ventures into space were based is an incredible and inspiring tale of
courage, persistence and pride.

See it. I promise you will be moved and inspired.

Just ran across something peculiar.

A few minutes ago I noticed a new icon in the system tray on this
computer. Clicked on it to expand it & it said:

Windows Media Center Update
Connection Established.

When I tried to right click to open a context menu for more information,
it just disappeared.

I clicked on the "Hidden Icons" icon, and it was lurking there, but even
before I could right click on it to find out what it was doing, it
disappeared again.

Anyone else noticed this? I don't use Windows Media Center.

other because of his expression. The first one has such a blank stare

Oh, maybe I should do it then. We have loads of them in Kensington Gardens.
They eat pigeons occasionally, which upsets the tourists.

Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page

2017-01-30 Thread P. J. Alling
I don't know if any old hands were aware of this but for a while Boz has
been looking for someone to edit and maintain his web page. He has
apparently moved on from Pentax. I was looking for information on an
obscure feature and visited his page. There's an announcement that he's
found a group to keep the site updated and hopefully relevant. Just
thought I'd pass the information on, since he no longer posts here.
