It was probably around 1998-99, when I realized that another PP (Practical Photography) had a much better quality content. I remember I was buying that one regularly. Pop.Photography was emptier. Then Practical Photography declined (rather sharply, IMHO), but Pop.Photography did not become better... I am actually surprised it survived this long... Re: How I changed the EXIF date/time by 1 year and 3 hours
John, That information is correct, but if you are digging to the full depth, in Windows, in the NTFS, there are 4 dates pertaining to the file: ("MACE") "Create", "Modify", "Access", and "Entry Modified". (Ref: http://forensicswiki.org/wiki/New_Technology_File_System_(NTFS) ) Different file systems (DOS) have different structure. All these are separate from Exif, which is written inside the file and is system-independent. The timestamp that is typically changed by Windows programs (including FastStone Image Viewer) is "Modified". Which time is reported - depends on the program, and could depend on the view/mode. E.g. under "File Explorer" in Win 10 (aka Windows Explorer in Win 7 and before), in "details" view, you can right-click on the header of any of the columns and choose which columns will be shown. Those include: "Date" (enabled by default), "Date Created", "Date Modified", "Date taken". The latter three are self-descriptive. The last one is taken from Exif. The first one, I suspect is "adaptive", - i.e. depends on the type of the file. I see that for images, the first one is taken from "Data taken" (taken from Exif), at least in the default configuration (It might be possible to modify that behavior). You can also right-click on the file in that same File Viewer, and select "Properties". Then you'll see all three dates "Created", "Modified", "Accessed" right there. And then, if you click on "details" tab (still in that "properties" pop-up), you can see some details from EXIF, including the date. Setting the actual timestamp stored in the file system to match the EXIF date/time means, in theory, that your file system information now matches what was (or should have been ...) associated with the file when your camera initially created the image. But unfortunately it's a whole lot more complicated than that. There are generally at least two timestamps associated with a file - one showing the time the file was created, and one showing the time the contents were last modified. Yes. This frequently is an issue when you forget to adjust the time zone. LR provides the possibility to adjust the date and time to a specified value (which is inconvenient for multiple photos taken over several days of a trip) or to shift by set number of hours (which is limited to +/- 24 hours. During the recent trip, in addition to my regular bag with Pentax DSLR, I took a small P&S. I had to charge the battery, and the date was reset. So, I made a mistake while setting the date: The date was 1 year (2018), and 3 hours ahead. So, I would have died if I had to adjust the time zone in LR 365 times... :-) The tool I used was "FastStone Image Viewer" (it is free, I've been using it on Windows for many years). It has a bunch of good batch tools (including smart renaming, resizing, adding watermarks, text, etc., and making some minor adjustments to the photos). It also can shift the hours, but the maximum number is 999. So, I didn't want to make that adjustment 9 times (although that would be a close number of operations). Instead, first, for each of the 5 days I used the camera, I change "date only", setting the correct date/year. And then for all the files, and adjusted time by -3 hours. While doing that, I kept the option (which is check-marked by default) to set the file timestamp to the same (as EXIF) date/time. I thought maybe this tool (and approach) would be useful to someone on this list.
