Thanks, I tried adjusting the hummingbirds, are they better?

Here's a forward thinking thought, perhaps as a backup plan.

Compile an email list of all the contributors. Send an opening line to
the first one in the list with the request to add a second line after
it. Then send that second line with the same instructions to the next
address in the list, and repeat for all of them in order.

Volia! The foreword.

Just threatening Doug with this suggestion should elicit some sort of
response from him. :)

Well, the fact that the moon is obscuring some of the clouds is a bit of a
give-away.
(Not to mention the rather obvious dark ring round the moon)

Ok ok yes I believed you. But I had to check anyway…

On Oct 12, 2011 when the photo was allegedly taken,
in the Masai Mara where the dastardly deed was done,
in the early morning as implied by the title of the image:

1. The moon was full at 0505 that morning.
2. The moon set at 0620 on a bearing of 281.4° as seen from the casual
observers position on Saltlick road. I.e., basically a bit North of West.
3. The sun rose at 0623 that morning, as you might expect, on a bearing of
97.3°, a bit South of East.

The photo is shopped. QED.

Re: PESO: lens compare

2017-03-21 Thread Igor PDML-StR

As far as I can tell, these two lenses are focused on different objects.
I am comparing the add sheets with "tasracing.com.au" (or whatever it is),
as well as "800".
I am also looking at the lamps in the top left corner.
It looks like the main point in focus in the bottom one is somewhere near
the middle of the second hole.

I cannot find where the top photo's focus.

I suspect that it is why you are concluding about the lesser degree of
sharpness in the top photo. And you might be correct.
But to draw a reliable conclusion, one should focus on a distinct feature
in the photo (the same one for both lenses!), and I don't see that
happening here.

I think a test pattern for the depth of focus would be really helpful here
to unambiguously eliminate any user error. (I am talking about the
test pattern that is tilted.)

Thanks, Igor.

That site is specifically related to the LX.

I was never rich enough or artistic enough to justify getting an LX.

The Spotmatic is the camera I used for the longest period of time, by far.
It was a rugged little thing that lasted decades,\

I take it that the pentax is the bottom one?

There are so many complications to lens design, I wonder how they
compare at f/1.8. The Zeiss may have some significant strengths other
than sharpness at f/8 that the Pentax completely lacks.

I take it they were both tripod mounted, 2 second delay and focused in

I still have the Super Tax 55/2 which came with my now defunct S1a. If set
to M (on the lens, that is) and used in AV mode, it works very well but
needs +1 exp. comp. The AF confirm is even OK at f8. Good quality images.

I do have a Super Takumar 55/1.8, which is the same as the first Pentax lens
I ever owned, and came
with an SV body. I found the original version very good, quite capable of
making prints up to 20
inches wide. I'll have to try it on my K5ii, as this camera does seem to
make the best of any lens

you put on it.

OT - "... called cameras"

2017-03-21 Thread Igor PDML-StR

"... minicomputers that also happen to have the capacity to
be used as a telephone,” Roberts wrote. “They could just as easily be
called cameras, video players, rolodexes, calendars, tape recorders,
libraries, diaries, albums, televisions, maps, or newspapers.”

This Supreme Court ruling almost 3 years
http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/supreme-court-cell-phone-privacy-searches

got me thinking:
I wonder if the same logic can be applied to other "minicomputers" that
are "called cameras", such as DSLRs? They are cameras, video recorders,
video players, and mini-computers that do a quite externsive calculations
on the images when you convert them. And now, many of them are
internet-connected.
(For the reference, I remember a hack that added a Tetris game to one of
the earlier DSLRs, some 10 years ago. Was that *ist DS or K10D?)
