Re: Adapters from other QR's to Arca Swiss?

2017-04-10 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Ken,

Thank you for this suggestion.
I think that might be a reasonable solution for my needs.
So, basically, it is an Arca-Swiss clamp that can be bolted to
the desired Bogen/Manfrotto QR (RC5 in my case).
In you case you have an extra aluminum block, but I wonder if it can be
avoided.

In the simplest case, that "bolting" can be done if that clamp has a 3/8"
or 1/4" female thread in it, and, preferably, a whole for the pin in my
case -- to avoid any extra rotation on the said screw.

Since there are A-S clamps that mount directly onto a monopod or heads, -
they obviously do have one of such holes.
So, the question now is: Is there a hole as well, - to avoid the rotation
of this clamp on the RC5 plate?

I am looking at the clamps, e.g. from RRS:
http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/QR-clamps
One of the "mounting styles", with the threaded center hole is what I'd
need. I don't think there would be a hole for the pin (I don't see it
being mentioned). So, I wonder, how is such a clamp is secured against

rotation on a threaded stud?
Any ideas/suggestions?

Just in case, to help visualizing, RC5 plate looks like this:

Re: PESO - Lizard(s), passed on?

2017-04-10 Thread Alan C

It is surprising that lizards can survive your winter conditions at all yet
obviously some do. Many reptiles are able to survive very cold conditions
by hibernating. Even here, where it doesn't get very cold, the lizards &
snakes tend to be quite sluggish on cooler mornings. I would say those are
in the process of emerging from hibernation. Perhaps you should have
observed them over an extended period?

It's this one:
http://www.bogentripodparts.com/parts/head3433-01.htm

The alternative I've been considering is to replace the top plate (part
"B" on this page, aka R501,05), the 3rd image down, right after the QR)

with an Arca-Swiss clamp.
Note the scale: this plate is about 3.5"x3.5".

I already have a sturdy (video) tripod with a nice fluid head (Manfrotto

head that would accept RC5 (even if there is one suitable for monopods, which
I actually doubt). So, I'd like to "bring them to a common denominator", so

So, the easiest would be to install such an adapter in the existing tripod
"permanently", and only remove the QR plate (or an L-bracket). Also, the
advantage of this is that I can swap two cameras on the tripod or monopod if
I'd need to, - without necessity to have two sets of each type of plates.

I also was considering if I could remove the clamp part on the 501 head and
replace it with one that accepts Arca Swiss QR plates. But so far I don't see
how that can be done (without drilling/cutting).

Digital Slide Scanners

2017-04-10 Thread Bipin Gupta
While working in the Middle East, circa 2007, we had an HP Scanner
that took slides or 35 mm negative roll film (6) #s at a time.

It had an ingenious double lid with the top one for film and the
bottom lid for the normal document or photo scan.

It had (2) separate scanning lights one inside the top lid and the
other one built into the scanner body.

The moment it finished a scan it would throw out (6) separate pictures
- a +ve picture from the 35 mm negative roll film.
Of course the picture from the slide film would be a perfect
representation of the slide.

You could do basic correction & enhancements before or after a scan.
What was surprising was the automatic cleaning up effect of dusty,
speckled & color damages of the slide or negative on the finished
output - like magic.

I am sorry I do not remember the model #, as we lost it along with all
our possessions including our brand new Subaru Legacy in a flash
flood. The villa was submerged with 7 feet of water measured from our
drive way. It was a national disaster. We just saved our lives.

Regards.
Bipin.

Re: Digital Slide scanners

2017-04-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The way I scan medium format now uses the Leica BEOON copy device. It is
essentially a dedicated kit of extension tubes and a stand to take a Leica M
body and lens, with masks and settings for 1:1, 1:1.5, 1:2, and 1:3
reproduction ratio framings. With adapters, I fit my Leica SL body and
Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/2.5 and use 1:3 for medium format film. I use a piece of
thick glass mounted on a pair of wooden blocks to hold it over my flat panel
light box, and made a negative guide/positioning jig for the stand by cutting
and gluing together a few pieces of thick card stock. The
negatives/transparencies lay absolutely flat, emulsion side down, on the glass;
a 6x6 negative becomes a 16 Mpixel frame with the SL.

The same thing could be done with a table top copy stand, a light box, and a
mask to hold the negatives. The BEOON is simply a dedicated, compact table top
copy stand. It cost me $250, an order of magnitude less than the Nikon Super
Coolscan 9000 ED!

Re: Epson P600?

2017-04-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The only paper feed issue that I've heard complaints about is the fact that the
manual feed on the P600 requires extra steps for each piece of paper loaded
("open the guide, insert the paper, press the load button, close the guide"
compared to "insert the paper through the guide and feed it in until the switch
starts the load process").

The only paper I've had minor difficulty loading is Hahnemühle Bamboo in the
8.5x11 size, because it's quite heavyweight and has a tendency to curl (a
little anti-curl massaging on the corner of the printer solves it every time).

Otherwise, this printer has operated with no problems at all.

Re: Epson P600?

2017-04-10 Thread Christine Aguila
Ordered the p600. Should be here on Wednesday. Got the rebate form
downloaded. I should be able to report out a few days after arrival. I’ll
have to do a quick test before I send in my rebate to make sure the printer is
in working order on delivery. Chris Mitchell and I believe Steve Harvey gave
the p600 excellent reviews as well.

On the R2880, I did use the alcohol and q-tip method to clean paper grabbers
that I could reach. That helped a little bit—for a bit—but still had a few
retries to get the paper to pass through with the manual feed. Sheet feeder is
fine. No problems there. I’ll keep the R2880 around for some craft project
work until it dies, and use the p600 as a dedicated photo printer.

Cheers, Christine
