Re: K1 vs 645z

2017-05-22 Thread Mark C
I've done a lot of pixel shift work with the K1 and have to say that it
represents an incremental improvement in detail and dynamic range, but
is not a critical factor. In focus stacks there is a noticeable
improvement in detail using pixel shift mode, and its visible when pixel
peeping or when printing at larger sizes. But its not something that
would make or break an image - I can't imagine a situation where I'd
look at an image and think that it would not work if shot in non pixel
shift mode, even if the pixel shifted image has more detail. It's an
incremental improvement, but not a game changer.

On 5/21/2017 6:05 PM, Bruce Walker wrote:

I agree that pixel-shift might pretty-much close the gap between the
two bodies for landscape, but it is completely useless for many
styles/subjects of shooting. Like any kind of people or sports. Any
handheld use. In fact anything at all where the subject or camera
might move. :)

And then there's the issue of processing pixel-shifted results. All I
hear lately is folks perplexed about how you post-process
pixel-shifted files. To me all this makes pixel shift a novelty
feature.

Re: PESOs (3) - On My Way to Work (April)

2017-05-22 Thread Ken Waller

Hi Rick - my take FWIW -

In the first one, I intended the in-focus blossoms to make a “swoosh”
beginning upper left and ending upper right. In LR I added 1/2 stop to it
to help it stand out from the background. I tried a few different
apertures; this one (f/6.7) probably has a little too much DOF.

While I can see the swoosh you intended, it's masked by the similar white
blooms in the background. It either needs more separation from the
background or better yet the background need to be totally different - like
the green leaves at the bottom.

My intent with the pink dogwood was similar, except for using an arc
instead of a swoosh.

This image has very nice subjects but they need to be emphasized by showing
the most complete buds and minimizing the partial buds that surround the
three central to the image - ie a tighter crop on the three central buds and
minimizing the green space to the right of the center buds.

In the third one, I wanted to include the OOF blue flowers in the
background. Looking at it again, I would crop out the blossoms peeking in
from the bottom and right.

A tighter crop, as you stated, would accomplish a more pleasing image IMO.

YMMV

Thanks for commenting, Ken.

Actually a good deal of compositional thought went into these, and I’d
appreciate your suggestions.

Other than being an avid watcher of movies, I have zero interest in

Re: PESOs (3) - On My Way to Work (April)

2017-05-22 Thread Rick Womer
Thanks for commenting, Ken.

Actually a good deal of compositional thought went into these, and I’d
appreciate your suggestions.

In the first one, I intended the in-focus blossoms to make a “swoosh” beginning
upper left and ending upper right. In LR I added 1/2 stop to it to help it
stand out from the background. I tried a few different apertures; this one
(f/6.7) probably has a little too much DOF.

My intent with the pink dogwood was similar, except for using an arc instead of
a swoosh.

In the third one, I wanted to include the OOF blue flowers in the background.
Looking at it again, I would crop out the blossoms peeking in from the bottom
and right.

Cheers,

Rick

Very nice, Rick. I have very fond memories of a day in Sintra a couple
years back, and your photos bring those memories bubbling back.

Re: KNARF?

Thanks, Rob, that's good to hear.

I can't see that on FB, because I am not one of Frank's friends. I sent
him a request, but I guess he remembers me and thought better of it.

Re: K1 vs 645z

2017-05-22 Thread Rob Studdert
The HD DFA645 28-45 is a ridiculously good landscape lens, it runs
rings around the 15-30/2.8 Tamron for edge to edge sharpness, flare
resistance and lack of CA.
