Re: PESO - Redwood Tranquil
Don't know about that. Sounds like you know more about it than I do. I do know that California Redwoods were heavily logged, back in logging days, 80-90% cut down. And I know, while there are a few old growth Redwoods in the Berkeley Hills, most I have seen are not that old (because they aren't that big). And Berkeley is perfect for Redwoods, since Redwoods like fog. So I suspect these were planted, or some were planted (since Redwoods spread), but no idea when or why. But it is EXTREMELY likely the hills were covered with Redwoods to begin with, so I would view them as replacement Redwoods if they were planted. Shoot a fixed color balance - doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's the same one for everything you shoot in that light. Include a gray card in your first & last frames. Re: Yellow Home Lighting - Color Cast & Skin Tones
A few years back I did a series of reproduction of oil paintings in private homes where i HAD to get the colours right. I bought a gray card that I took one shot of at each location. Then, in Lightroom I could select all images from that location, use the WB eye dropper on the gray card, so that LR synchronised the change to all the images. "Should we"? No collective "we" here, as far as I'm concerned. :-) Pentax got infamous for its white balance in tungsten light, and have implemented a camera setting that allow you to moderate the degree of compensation for tungsten lights. Try tweaking that first to see if it makes you happy. Using the eye dropper on something you wish to perceive as neutral should get you in the ballpark with Lightroom. Someone's white T-shirt, etc... We aren't slaves to what the camera happens to produce. It interprets the scene one way and we are free to reinterpret that to the way we see it in our own heads. And in "real life" your brain adapts to the prevailing colour temperature and attempts to make it appear neutral. So the world in fact doesn't look blue when you are standing outdoors, except for a brief moment when you head outside from a tungsten-lit interior. > I buy CFL in that color range, BTW, because I can't stand blue casting > fluorescent lighting. They say it's natural, day light, but, no, it's blue. That's why the lamp sections in hardware stores are so big. Colour temperatures for everyone's preferences. I prefer daylight balance in some locations, but tungsten in others. Warm colours supposedly help you to prepare for sleep, as I understand it. They now make tricky lamps with ever-changing colour temperatures that can slowly shift to warmer as evening progresses. Re: Yellow Home Lighting - Color Cast & Skin Tones
I'm with Paul: there's no right or wrong answer; it's a personal preference choice. If you like warm interior tones, or want to convey such, go with a higher colour temp. If you prefer to neutralize the light for more accurate colour values, stick with tungsten WB. As for "leaving the photo as it is", the camera is no authority. Auto White Balance is often fooled by the scene, or you might have set manual white balance, so what you got out of the the camera is pretty arbitrary. But this example scene is even trickier because there are two distinct colour temperatures: what the table lamp produced (likely tungsten WB, 2800K-3200K) and what's coming in through the window, which looks to me like a cloudy dusk, so it could be anywhere from 4000K to 6000K. Lightroom allows you to create a WB gradient so you could make the colour balance reasonably neutral across the scene by making a gradient between the lamp and the window. But then that would make it look like daylight outside and remove the cue that it's late in the day. You can also easily solve the whole problem by converting the image to black and white. :) On Tue, Jun 27, 2017 at 4:50 PM, Paul Stenquistwrote: > I go both ways on this. I somehow missed the earlier announcement of an upcoming Theta 4K, which will be introduced sometime this year. Enablement (thanks to the Theta SC price drop)
Hadn't really seriously looked at the Theta until this: Price drop info http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ricoh-announces-199-price-for-theta-sc-360-camera-300479364.html Decided for this price that I should dip my toe in the waters of 360 degree video (particularly since I can hang it from a drone). In my future may be a full blown S (with 25 minutes of video capability vs the 5 minutes of the SC). 360 degree stills might be interesting for Real Estate work also. It will also be another camera to have running JUST before totality hits on August 21st. :) Original announcement was only last October: https://www.forbes.com/sites/geoffreymorrison/2016/10/12/ricoh-theta-sc-360-camera-preview/ Pentax page for the SC: https://theta360.com/uk/about/theta/sc.html I was about to order it from Amazon when my WikiBuy extension notified me I could save $19 by purchasing from B To my surprise, not only did I save the state tax, but also got to select a free Theta soft case (I chose the black one with a [just plain silly] $39 suggested retail. Re: Yellow Home Lighting - Color Cast & Skin Tones
Why would you want to remove the yellow color cast? It is the way it looks in real life and we are all used to seeing that kind of light in rooms at night. Re: OT - "as if" physics question
I know I’m late in the discussion but I just saw the thread now and, as a physicist, I thought I could provide some insights into this question (but no answer). One way of seing the problem is to consider only the vertical movement (equivalent to standing in an elevator going up in small steps with stops between them). The stress this puts on the body would be related to the maximum vertical acceleration each time you step up. I did a quick estimate and perhaps that could correspond to a ~15% increase of stress relative to standing still (equivalent to adding 15% mass to the bag and to the person). Another component of the problem is the actual biomechanics of climbing the stairs while maintaining balance. This is the tricky part because it involves "lever problems”. I expect this is the biggest source of stress, especially if your body position is not optimal, because lever problems involve multiplying factors. Therefore, the forces exerted locally by muscles and joints to prevent rotational and torsional imbalances can be much larger than the force required to simply carry the bag (equivalent to multiplying the mass of the bag by a possibly large factor). We normally dont’ hold heavy loads at arm’s length for this reason and we shouldn’t lift loads by bending forward for this reason as well (when lifting by bending forward, I believe the multiplying factor can reach ~20 in the lower back). I guess my message is: in terms of body stress there’s more to stair climbing than vertical lift.
