Re: PESO - Down In Indiana

2017-07-01 Thread Alan C
I disagree. The barn is the focal point, the others add to the scene. For
instance, Bruegel's paintings & Giles' cartoons mostly have things going on
in the background (often naughty) which adds interest & compels the viewer
to look a bit deeper.

Thanks, Marne. I think you are right about the competing centers of
interest. I have other shots without the fence and truck. I might try a
shot with just the fence, no truck, since I don't have one with just the
truck and no fence. Without one or the other I don't think there is
enough going on in the image.

I usually love your shots, it's strange to me to say I have some quibbles.
Something about the placement of the barn, re fence and passing truck

I would have walked closer to the fence to leave it out. (I'd say crop it,
but don't think it can be done now. At least not without cloning.)

Take with a grain of salt, Marnie aka Doe :-)

Mac external drive trouble

2017-07-01 Thread Rick Womer
I have a Toshiba 4TB external drive in an OWC housing that has my Time Machine
backup on it (1.8TB so far).

When I sat down yesterday, it would not mount. Eventually it did, and I ran
Disk Utility, which gave me this message:

Invalid name for directory inode (id=5966587)
(it should be dir_5966587 instead of temp5966587)
Incorrect number of directory hard links
The volume Huge Ext HD could not be verified completely.
File system check exit code is 8.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as
File system verify or repair failed.
Operation failed…

Is there a way to repair the drive without erasing it? I’d have to buy another
drive to hold the data, and I have no other use for one.

Can the drive be repaired at all, or is it toast?

Rick

2017-07-01 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Marne. I think you are right about the competing centers of
interest. I have other shots without the fence and truck. I might try a
shot with just the fence, no truck, since I don't have one with just the
truck and no fence. Without one or the other I don't think there is
enough going on in the image.

I would have walked closer to the fence to leave it out. (I'd say crop
it, but don't think it can be done now. At least not without cloning.)

Take with a grain of salt, Marnie aka Doe :-)

Hoya bought Pentax for the medical imaging division. The last thing they
wanted was the camera part of the company. That was why the QC went to hell
on the K5. All they were interested in was squeezing as much profit out of
the photographic equipment as they could. Ricoh only paid something like
125 million for the camera division.

This macro foray is rapidly turning into an entomology project.
The ant is a regular wood ant worker (formica sp.) who strayed into
the house and died on the living room floor.
As insects often do, it had curled all its legs up underneath. So I
had to soften it for a while in vinegar before attempting to arrange
legs and antennae in a more lively pose. Then dry it out, remove
debris and dust, and then place it on a piece of bark.

Stacked in Zerene Stacker from 300 shots by 645Z with FA-150/2.8 and
FA-75/2.8 as diopter (ca. 2X magnification). End result is cropped by
about 50%.

This looks great on my computer, and it’s substantially sized. But it was small
and didn’t play well on my phone. Don’t know why.

Great shot. Love the fence going one way, and the truck moving off in another
direction. And of course the barn is a classic, and it’s perfectly placed in
frame. Well done!

With that "big sky," are you sure it wasn't Montana?
The sky is, to me, the main feature of the image, but I think it is
inclusion of the foreground fence that makes the shot special.
