When I have cards in both 1 and 2, my setting is for DNG to go to 1, and also
jpeg to 2. So it is not that surprising that the extra work would take more
time. When only the one card is installed in Slot 1, only the DNG is being
written.
So, card rating/type alone didn’t seem to make much difference, but trying to
use a second slot (for jpeg in this case) does slow things down.

Re: Slightly different SDXC card questions - followup with data

2018-06-02 Thread Stanley Halpin
Again, thanks to all for the comments on my earlier question. I reply here to
Larry’s comment as his comment provided me with a template for what follows.
Any credit is his, any blame is mine…

Three SDXC cards. One K-1 with two slots.

Card A = Lexar Professional SDXC II U-3 150MB/s - 1000x
Card B = Lexar Professional SDXC I U-1 95MB/s - 633x
Card C = SanDisk Extreme SDHC I U-3 90MB/s

Questions:
- does it matter which card I use in the K-1?
- does it matter if I mix and match e.g. A in Slot 1 and C in Slot 3?
Condition: K-1 in Manual mode, Hi-speed Continuous mode. Shooting in Liveview.
Macro lens focused on face of Casio digital watch.
Settings: RAW (DNG) files written to Slot 1,highest quality jpeg written to
Slot 2
Variations: Slot 1 only vs. Slot 1 + Slot 2
Parameters:
- Time to fill the buffer
- # of images to fill the buffer
- Time to clear the buffer once it is full

Results: It doesn’t matter. Mostly.

With one card only, in Slot 1, using Cards A, B, or C, the K-1 took roughly* 3
seconds to fill the buffer. That was after 13 images. Once the buffer was full,
in about 12 seconds the LV screen reappeared and it was possible to take one
shot every second or two. Assuming no additional shots beyond the original 13,
an additional 23 seconds required to clear the buffer.

With second card in Slot 2, results are different. With A + A, A + B, A + C, B
+ B, B + C, or C + C, the K-1 took approximately 2 seconds to fill the buffer,
11 images filled the buffer, and clearing the buffer took about 35 seconds
after that initial burst of 11 shots.

So, no appreciable difference among these (relatively modern) SD cards, despite
their somewhat different self-proclaimed ratings.
But quite a difference when shooting with cards in both slots compared to a
single card in Slot 1 written to with DNG files!

*Caveat: The watch I targeted with my macro lens (to get the timings) was in
normal mode, showing time to the nearest second. I may re-do some of this
tomorrow with the watch in Stopwatch mode showing hundredths of seconds. I am
sure there was at least some slight variation among the cards, but it was just
too small to be picked up with the approach I used.

You may now return to your regularly programmed event…

PDML Annual

2018-06-02 Thread Ed Keeney
I received my 2018 (and 2017) annuals this week and once again I'm
amazed by the abundance of talent here on PDML. Seeing it in print
form takes the PDML to another level.

My wife has also enjoyed the books over the years. I mentioned to her
the Grandfather Mountain photo trip and she's almost on board (the
camping part of the trip isn't in our wheelhouse). Of course this
won't happen for a few years when the kids move up and out. It's now
on my photo bucket list!

Re: Where do you post your critter pictures?

2018-06-02 Thread Bruce Nagel

All of my photos of equines can be found in a Flickr album located in the
vicinity of:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/losthalo/albums/72157646881959603

There are a few critters in here as well:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/losthalo/albums/72157662402122589

I have thus far resisted the urge to post all of my "D'a" cat and dog
photos to the internets...

I'm still carrying my K5 after has been
since I bought it when it first came out. Wish I had a memory again...(?)
Only difference is it's a back up in
case?? Have used it a few times in
both single frame and burst mode.
Image quality still surprises me.

I guess I got lucky with my K-5. I did eventually part with in in favor of the
K-5II and IIs. I still use them when I travel. They (and the DA lenses) are
smaller and lighter than my K-1 and its lenses, and I am still very pleased

The K-5 was produced by Hoya, the II and IIs by Ricoh. The Hoya version was
notorious for cheapness. Ricoh, to their credit, fixed that.

your Lilac Breasted Roller looks rather like a bird we have in the USA
though yours is muchmore colorful ... who I encountered but couldn't
photo in the Texas/OKlahoma border in April, 1985
at a bird sanctuary. It's proper namewas Scissor - tailed fly catcher.
I learned it from the ranger at the sanctuarywhen I went to describe and ask

Me:  I just saw a bird with a  pinkish breast and a very long forked
tail kinda like a  a swallow but much longer

Ranger: (to her colleague) Hey Joe, the scissor tailis back!

Didn't mean for the cell phone post to go to the whole list, with my

I didn't know how to make it undisclosed recips..

I'm procrastinating putting numbers back in the phone..

But as an asied, when I took my Samsung T639 Flip phone to the T-Mobile
store to get an new Sim card and make sure the lost phone was
totally locked out of the systemthe Store manager looked at it and said
"I don't think that will work".  I assured him it would and it did.  It
was nice that when I lost the phone T-mobile just suspended the service-
so I didn't have to change numbers.
