PESO 2018 - 065, 066 (lens testing) - GDG
My equipment juggling (Leica CL acquisition) has started another round of lens experimentation. Here are two sessions... --- I dug this old Sigma 600mm cat out of the closet and fitted it to a mount adapter, mounted it on the CL just for giggles. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1825/41601324160_e6fa4aed29_o.jpg That's effectively a 900mm f/8 lens on APS-C format ... Not something I'll use terribly frequently but eh? whatever. I think it cost me about $80 a decade or more ago. It's pretty soft and flarey, but I was able to make this fine portrait with it: https://flic.kr/p/26oaEgW To give you a notion of the scale and distance, here's the shooting setup: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1766/29538822258_48710a7aec_o.jpg --- Next, I pulled out my Leica Elmar-R 180mm f/4 and the 2x Extender-R. It's a nice, compact, and pretty light package on the CL, with an equivalent FoV of a 540mm f/8 lens... https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1822/28557199937_4d8648529e_c.jpg Whee! Adjustable aperture and FAR FAR better performance than the Sigma ... I acquired the Leica CL body primarily to use for tabletop, macro, and repro work, what's been missing since I sent the SL off for consignment sale, but it's kind of fun to see what all my R and M lenses perform like on it. enjoy! Re: GESO: Peru - Machu Picchu
Thanks Jack. Subash asked about my gear and I answered from memory. Just now I went into the metadata. I have a 40mm “pancake” lens I use as a lens cap on one of the bodies when I pack the whole gear set for travel in my backpack. I actually use that (relatively discreet) lens mostly for candid shots of friends at dinner, etc. Leaving the 40mm aside, for the trip as whole my lens usage was 9% with the 15-30/2.8, 33% with the 24-70/2.8, and 58% with the 70-200/2.8. The first afternoon at Machu Picchu I did use the 70-200 for a few shots, 15% of my total, but 30% were with the 15-30 and 55% with the 24-70. When we went back into Machu Picchu the next morning, 100% of my shots were with the 24-70. stan > On Jul 16, 2018, at 4:46 AM, Jack Davis wrote: > > Sounds like you were well armed and > certainly captured some spectacular > scenery. > J > Sent from my iPhone > >> On Jul 15, 2018, at 6:48 PM, Stan Halpin wrote: >> >> Thanks Subash. Re: GESO: Ecuador & the Galapagos
Thanks Ann! I appreciate your comments. Backstory(s) on the woman-with-bird shot… 1. Betsy and her husband Mark were our travel companions for this Ecuador + Peru adventure. Betsy is one of those who always uses a polarizer and seldom uses a lens hood because it interferes with access to the polarizer. I am one of those that always uses a lens hood and seldom use a polarizer, even though I know I should be doing that. I chide her about the lens hood, she chides me about the polarizer. 2. Our naturalist/guide that morning in the Galapagos shoots with a Canon with a long lens of some sort (probably a 70-200) with lens hood. He knows that the Galapagos Flycatchers love seeing their reflections and have learned that if they perch on the bottom edge of a lens hood, they can see themselves reflected in the lens. He held up his camera as though to take a photo, the birds came. Betsy has several shots of me with a bird perched on the front of my 70-200 lens hood. I have several shots of the bird on Betsy’s lens. I think the bird is chiding Betsy for not having a hood to sit on so that it can see its reflection. stan > On Jul 16, 2018, at 8:39 AM, ann sanfedele wrote: > > got to these this morning... > Wonderful stuff.. , but gotta single out this one for absolutely contest > winning content.. I love the night sky and have made a few feeble attempts to photograph milky way etc. You may still be struggling with setup and workflow/processing issues, but I think these are quite good. I did a quick look through, not a careful examination; my favorite is 89858 because I think it has the best blending of earth (mountains with snowfields in the background) and sky. stan > On Jul 15, 2018, at 4:12 PM, Larry Colen wrote: > > Some attempts at astro landscapes. > > I don't quite have it wired yet, but I'm learning things to try for next > time. PESO: parnassia is back again
For me it is always a pleasure to find again parnassia palustris in our dune valleys in mid summer. Though we have a very long dry period here, within weeks some fields will likely turn white with this special flower. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mxer/41573726400/in/photostream/ Henk -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
RE: PESO - Green and Gate
I love 'em too! Went to Farnborough and Biggin Hill a couple of times each when I lived in the UK. Nothing like the sound of a Merlin engine at full throttle in a WWII aircraft, or a Vulcan or Victor on full thrust on take-off. Here in Queensland, there is a "Warbirds" museum with some well-restored aircraft from many decades: when I visited, I was amazed to find one of their Hawker Hunters was built when I was working at the Hawker factory in Kingston-upon-Thames, so it is very possible I plated the cockpit release catches! Glad to know it had no accidents as a result... John in Brisbane (actually at Caloundra this week) -Original Message- From: PDML On Behalf Of Daniel J. One resulted in a few moments of terror when one of our planes didn't make it for the fly-by, but was involve in a mid-air that resulted in the loss of a radome and a navigation ejecting (safely except for some broken toes) over the pine forests of NC. The best one was wen my son was a teen-ager and we attended the one at Miramar, CA back when it was the "Top Gun" Navy Base. (It is now the USMC's main airbase on the West Coast). I had lots of high performance a/c, plus two Migs; first ones I ever saw other than I on radar screen. We have a nice annual airshow 2 hours west of here in Reading, PA, that specializes in WW II aircraft. An organization to which I belong mans a table there to promote our group and educate folks on aviation heroes. I used to like to post myself at the end of runways and watch the planes overhead heading for a touchdown. These days one can get arrested doing that.
