Every review I've seen for "Welcome to Marwen" has been favorable, although I've seen some that said it wasn't as good as the documentary film "Marwencol". It's just not performing at the box office. Re: My Mood Is Changing ... Again
Thanks for your kind words, Godfrey! That's exactly my problem with traveling. If I go abroad, I normally don't get the second chance, let alone a chance number one dozen :-) to visit the place. There are some rare places that we visited more than once or that I visited multiple times. In fact, this is my second visit to Chengdu and I had a chance to visit one of these tourist locations second time over. But indeed, two times is still way too few to start feeling the place, so to say. I must say that I find street photography extremely difficult. Even with small camera, small lens, with full confidence in my gear and what not - it is really very hard to make a shot that makes sense. So, I have my challenges that keep me going. In terms of gear, I don't have much to complain about, or in fact nothing at all. I have what I need and if/when I buy anything, it is more out of whim rather than because I really need some specific gear. Modern cameras and lenses far surpass my abilities as a photographer. That, by the way, includes m43 system. On Tue, Jan 1, 2019 at 8:20 PM Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: > "Incense" is my favorite, Boris. "Incense" is my favorite, Boris. I really like "Street Food Vendor" too, but I'd probably crop the idea way down to focus on the vendor and her wares if it were my photo: seeking the minimum to put in the frame and bring the context alive. Personally, I shoot a lot when I'm traveling, but until I've been to a place a dozen times or so it's mostly the happy accident that makes the good shots. I shoot less when I'm nearby home but I see far more interesting photos here and capture them more consistently. I'm finding that I really, really like shooting with the Polaroid SX-70 cameras a lot. Re: OT: Happy New Year
Thanks, Boris. I can still read a speak a little Russian; 20 years ago I was able to talk to some of the locals in Moscow and St Pete. If you noticed that my Cyrillic greeting was a bit different, that's because it is in the language of my ancestors, Carpatho-Rusyn, which is a bit more like Church Slavonic than modern Russian. OT: Pentax Spotting -- Welcome to Marwen
We saw Welcome to Marwen this past weekend; Both my wife and I really enjoyed it. You may have to look for it in "art" theaters, rather than in the multiplex cinemas at the malls. Yes, Steve Carell often has an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic in his hands often in the movie. He plays an artist who was beaten nearly to death and, after rehab, becomes a photographer to create art that he can no longer do the way he did before his traumatic injuries. The movie is based on a true story: http://marwencol.com/ In many way, Mark Hogancamp is a typical Pentaxian: a fanatical, delusional compulsive who plays with dolls, lives in a fantasy world, collects high heel shoes, is afraid of women and talks to people who are not there. But he takes interesting images. Re: My Mood Is Changing ... Again
It does not work for me this way, Stan. Normally, when I go on a trip abroad, I would take more consistent pictures, but less interesting or less inspired, if you will. If you're inclined to go through 25+ pictures - have a look here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1H7burQbgc8DiRi5SPYFheKR11tcBBRPN I've just returned from a business trip to China. I had few evenings and one full day where I could take pictures and generally not be in the state of work. All pictures are taken with Oly EM-1 and Oly 25/1.8 - nifty fifty, which is very nifty indeed, as far as technical quality is concerned. They are ok-ish, but they are not spectacular. I am still trying to find a different rendering of this or that photo, but... I don't have any particular issue with my muse. She is just ever so slightly bored, as always and she lets me keep on going like this. I think I have to start somewhere else entirely. My first step will be to build a shrine, metaphorical or not :-) , where I can make the necessary offerings to invite my photography muse back. So why not to the photo mailing lists and others who I share my occasional photos and rants with as well? I spent two days carrying it and trying to see: Nothing much happened. - I fitted the Hektor 135mm f/4.5 and M-Rokkor 90mm telephoto lenses to the Leica CL for the first time in an age and walked with it for a day. I saw a dozen photos within a half hour. - I loaded my original Polaroid SX-70 with a pack of B film. Two of the exposures I made appealed to me. - I loaded my MiNT SLR670a (upgraded version of the Polaroid SX-70) with a pack of 600 Color film. So far, six of eight exposures are all singing to me. Time to push further in the indicated directions—more reach and selectivity, more color—and see where it draws me. The Muse needs to be addressed...
