Re: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?

2019-01-15 Thread Alan C

Another suggestion:

Perhaps we could convince Brian to host a "Super PUG". We could all
contribute (say) 3 images from 2018 albeit at slightly higher
resolutions. They could then be presented in the usual PUG format &
accessed by PDMLers in their own countries where they could arrange to
have photobooks printed or even do it themselves. The Quotations for
2018 have already been posted. A nominal charge to cover expenses could
be collected up front with the images.

What do you think?

I have a Zenfolio account, unlimited storage. I already pay the

Access limited, password protected. No real need for this, but
possible in case anyone is nervous about putting they best stuff out
there on the web. I could also leave the Gallery open and password
protect access to individual images at the owner's request.

No Expiration date for the Gallery.

Downloading not allowed.

Max viewing size Zenfolio’s XXLarge = 1550x960

Titles etc Not searchable

Metadata viewable?

Show Number of Visitors to the Gallery?

Do Not allow viewers to order prints (again, I can adjust this
or any of the other parameters image by image if so requested by the
contributor.)

If this seems like a reasonable/useful option, then the way forward
would be:

A - comment on the proposed parameters
B - I don’t see a way for others to directly upload.  Send me up
to 5 images that you would like to have included. Let me know Image
Title and Caption (caption = your name or email or other
identifier.) I will load them to the site, untouched, no editing,
you submit what you want displayed.

I leave town for 6 weeks on 25 February, so 20 February would be a
reasonable first deadline.

- Tap Settings
- Tap Passwords & Accounts

Feel free to undertake the challenge.

I haven't offered to do it because it's beyond my level of competency. If
someone else wants to take on the project, I'll contribute images and for
certain I will buy copies of any resulting book.

But it's not something I feel comfortable I could do without EFFING it up.

Re: Stoopid iPhone

2019-01-15 Thread John
That's part of it. Earthlink is not my ISP. It's an email only account that I
signed up for several years ago when Time-Warner's email servers went down for
several months.

Time-Warner's "support" told me I wasn't paying for email, it was just a bonus
Time-Warner *gave* me out of their corporate generosity and as such it didn't
matter if they ever got the email server back on line because I wasn't being
deprived of any service I was paying for.

I escalated my complaint as high as I could, but never reached a level where the
person I was talking to was able to understand that NOT HAVING email service was
indeed a problem.

Unable to reach through the phone-line and dope slap the idiot assholes I was
having to deal with, I got a non-Time-Warner email only account and put myself
on the waiting list for Google Fiber.

The other part of it is I don't want to use the iPhone for email. I have
perfectly good computers that handle email just fine.

I bought the iPhone to run *GasBuddy* and *The Photographer's Ephemeris* and
maybe *PhotoPills*.

It matters. There may be an option allow you to keep messages on the server.
Otherwise, which is the case most of the time, messages downloaded to one
device will not be available on other devices.

I have a Zenfolio account, unlimited storage. I already pay the annual fee, no

No Expiration date for the Gallery.

Downloading not allowed.

Max viewing size Zenfolio’s XXLarge = 1550x960

Titles etc Not searchable

Metadata viewable?

Show Number of Visitors to the Gallery?

Do Not allow viewers to order prints (again, I can adjust this or any
of the other parameters image by image if so requested by the contributor.)

If this seems like a reasonable/useful option, then the way forward would be:
A - comment on the proposed parameters
B - I don’t see a way for others to directly upload. Send me up to 5

Eric,  I have a POP connection and use Thunderbird. All my emails are
saved both on my computer and on the server... I don't know about phones
and laptops and such.  I used to have it set to downlaod and delete, but
after having a crash a couple of years ago I switched back to leaving
stuff on the server too..

MAybe it depends on who your IP is.

Case in point, their recent article on "parallelism" & what it says
about the dog mimicking the woman's posture ... and the "cat":

Yeah - that was a good read!  (Hodler, btw, is one of my favorite painters.)

Well I've been doing a lot of that over the years.. didn't think about
it being called "parallelism"

This was my money maker back in 1981 when I got an "award of merit" in

While that is the most common attribution, there does not appear to be any
actual evidence to support the claim - it's not in any of his published
writings, or reported by any of his colleagues.

I've heard it attributed to both Churchill and Clemens/Twain, but again
only as anecdotal, with no supporting evidence.

Stoopid iPhone

2019-01-15 Thread John
When I got the iPhone, the guy at Verizon set it up so that it was linked to my
earthlink email address. Unfortunately, whenever it connects to wi-fi (or to my
Ethernet at home) it downloads mail to the iPhone, but anything it downloads to
the iPhone doesn't come to my inbox on this computer.

I left it hooked up overnight while it updated iOS and it downloaded 76 email
messages from Earthlink. Took a quick glance at the inbox and then over to this
computer to see which ones went there instead of here, then back to the inbox to
see if there was some way to forward them ...

But when I got back to the inbox on the iPhone, *NOW* it says it's empty. I
don't know where the messages went. They're just gone.

Now I have to go back to the Verizon store and get them to help me fix the damn
phone so it won't receive email from Earthlink.

PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?

2019-01-15 Thread Stanley Halpin
I hate to see the PDML Annual die after its fine 10-year run. I cannot, will
not, volunteer to step in to try and follow on in Mark’s path, recognizing that
Mark not only did very fine work, but also had able assistance from Bill and
Doug.

So, here are my thoughts about an alternative venue for us to share our Best Of
2018 images.

I have a Zenfolio account, unlimited storage. I already pay the annual fee, no
extra cost for adding another Gallery to my collection.

Are are my thoughts on configuration of a Gallery for our sharing purposes:

Access limited, password protected. No real need for this, but possible
in case anyone is nervous about putting they best stuff out there on the web. I
could also leave the Gallery open and password protect access to individual
images at the owner's request.

No Expiration date for the Gallery.

Downloading not allowed.

Max viewing size Zenfolio’s XXLarge = 1550x960

Titles etc Not searchable

Metadata viewable?

Show Number of Visitors to the Gallery?

Do Not allow viewers to order prints (again, I can adjust this or any
of the other parameters image by image if so requested by the contributor.)

If this seems like a reasonable/useful option, then the way forward would be:
A - comment on the proposed parameters
B - I don’t see a way for others to directly upload. Send me up to 5
images that you would like to have included. Let me know Image Title and
Caption (caption = your name or email or other identifier.) I will load them to
the site, untouched, no editing, you submit what you want displayed.

I leave town for 6 weeks on 25 February, so 20 February would be a reasonable
first deadline.

Comments?

You need to update macOS. The latest keyboards rely upon new infrastructure for
their 'soft key' functionality, in part, that's only available in later
versions of the operating system.

I get calls on issues like this from my brother and one of my friends all the
time. There's no fixing some of these issues without getting everything to
either current or to the last, most recent version of the operating system that
will install on a given machine. It's one of the reasons I always keep my
computer's operating system up to date, and have virtually no issues to speak
of.

Ten years is a darn good run for any annual! Remember Stuart Brand and the
Whole Earth Catalog … He felt a first and then a last were really all that were
necessary for a successful annual. :-)

Thanks for all your effort and hard work, Mark. The quality of the books shows
your passion and reflects well on all of the contributors. I'm happy to display
all ten volumes on my bookshelf, and I show them to folks regularly.

Onwards, always and only onwards!
