Re: quick and dirty hdr of the end of the eclipse

2019-01-22 Thread Larry Colen

Igor PDML-StR wrote on 1/22/19 9:52 AM:

Some very nice images there, Larry!
Overall, looking at some (reddish "close-up") images, e.g.
20190120-LRC03475, 20190120-LRC03497, I couldn't figure out if the Moon
is furry and soft, or very prickly. :-)

(Yes, I know, it is the noise... But that's how it makes the Moon looking.)

It turns out that the moon was briefly a bit prickly during the eclipse:
https://gizmodo.com/holy-crap-the-moon-was-struck-by-a-meteorite-during-th-1831950105/amp?__twitter_impression=true=IwAR2J2raJsOmE72ZNn1qM5NjnLbK7XYxNG6o3-LCGhUCtH35orIlq_nAG6VQ

There is an interesting artifact:
20190120-LRC03649-HDR-2 has a yellow-turning-into-green circle on the
left side.

Yeah, probably chromatic aberration exacerbated by the HDR software. I
tried to correct it on a bunch of them, but there was only so much I
could do.

Re: PESO: Super Bloody Wolf Moon

2019-01-22 Thread John
Not B The moon turned out naturally monochrome because I didn't catch any of
the red in the earth's shadow.

Each of the moon images is loaded as a layer in Photoshop.

Each layer has a linked Levels adjustment layer, masked so that the Levels
adjustment only applies to the moon in that layer. That gives me the visible
portion of the moon at approximately the same brightness for each image.

It was the best I could do because none moon images has any shadow detail I
could bring out.

Re: Boris 2019-01

2019-01-22 Thread Boris Liberman
Stan,

As you know, I am shooting m43 (Oly EM-1) these days. Wide open is not as
open as what you're used to with your FF or 1.5x cropped camera bodies... I
could probably open up aperture some more, but it wouldn't be that much of
a difference due to the distance between me and the couple (and a dog) in
the foreground and the rest of the image.

I think that first I need to start getting consistently meaningful images
in terms of content and then, once I get grip on that, I should start
trying to figure out things such as DOF control as I shoot. It will take
good time...

There no that much sand beyond the castle and in Tel Aviv, you cannot

Re: PESO: Super Bloody Wolf Moon

2019-01-22 Thread Igor PDML-StR

That's a very nice composite, John!
I am going to show it to my daughter tonight, - to reiterate our
discussion on how lunar eclipses work.

We were lucky to have a clear sky. But the entire event was past her
bed time. And we were driving home while she was sleeping in the car.
We made sure we got close to home just before 11 pm (CST), and woke her
up. So, she saw the totality and then we watched for a bit how the light
started showing up on the side, and then she went to bed at home.

But she was still quite sleepy, so, going over it again with this nice
composite as well as close-up images from Larry would be reinforcing that

educational moment.

It is rather funny that she said that she liked the solar eclipse much
better: It was during the day (didn't need to sleep, and the effect was
more drastic).

Thank you for sharing this.

Igor

Re: quick and dirty hdr of the end of the eclipse

2019-01-22 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Some very nice images there, Larry!
Overall, looking at some (reddish "close-up") images, e.g.
20190120-LRC03475, 20190120-LRC03497, I couldn't figure out if the Moon
is furry and soft, or very prickly. :-)

(Yes, I know, it is the noise... But that's how it makes the Moon
looking.)

There is an interesting artifact:
20190120-LRC03649-HDR-2 has a yellow-turning-into-green circle on the left
side.

Re: PESO:: Green Sea Turtles

I hope the state of Hawaii is able to step up and take up the slack.

The National Seashore here in North Carolina is affected by the government
shutdown and in addition to reports of people trashing the facilities, there
have been several reports of people in 4WD vehicles driving out on sections of
the beach that are normally closed to protect turtles & migratory birds.

PESO: Super Bloody Wolf Moon

2019-01-22 Thread John
So, I went out and stood in what felt like an Arctic Wind for 3 hours or so and
took pictures of the moon. As usual, the instructions for how to do it right
were at home on my desk waiting so I could find out everything I did wrong.

Still, I didn't muff it as badly as I did the Solar Eclipse in 2017.

https://flic.kr/p/2ehuNSE

K-1, Tokina AT-X Pro 80-200mm f/2.8 @ 200mm & F/16, ISO 100, various wrong
shutter speeds so I didn't catch much of the red tint.

I was in town when I took these, right next to the parking lot for a city park.
Raleigh, Cary & Wake County have been installing new LED street lights that
don't cause as much light pollution as the old lighting.

I've noticed it a couple of times in the last year or so, driving back to
Raleigh on the Interstate late some night when it's overcast there's less of a
bubble of light over the city.

That's a very credible job on a really tough exposure. You've got
tremendous dynamic range between the black feathers and the bright

channel far too readily. All of that on top of just getting a clear

Contrary to some others I actually like the composition and the inclusion of
bits of the other turtles, it shows its part of a group but focuses on the one
individual. I think there is a good balance to the composition but I do wish
there were just a wee wider strip of sand between the rock and the edge of the
frame in the bottom right. I like that the back portion of the shell mimics
the angle of the profile of the rock.

Is it resting its head there because the rock is warm? I like the shot, it says
"Yeah I'm just going to rest here a moment."

latest best attempt at an hdr of the waning eclipse

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/31894921907/in/album-72157675791773657/

I've come to the realization that I really need to actually plan these
things out and think of them *before* I try to take the photos. I'm also
quite certain that I'll come to this very same conclusion again, about a
day after I next try to photograph a lunar eclipse.

In any case, I think that a bit more careful processing, choosing only a
couple source frames, and choosing them carefully, made a noticeable
improvement, but there's still plenty more room left for improvement.
